I lived in Bamberg in 2008 and frequented Schlenkerla then. Yesterday I was finally able to go back and, no surprise, it hasn't changed a bit! Always a pleasure to visit Franconia and especially Bamberg!

It’s because after shipping across the Atlantic and storing in a warehouse, the beer in bottles aren’t as fresh as it is vom fass. It was a revelation to me the first time that I tasted Schlenkerla at the brewpub in Bamberg. It is delicious!
I was stationed in germany with the 173rd. One day I stumbled across this place. I had a schlenkerla. Amazing. I didnt really understand what I was having at the time. One day I would like to go back to truly enjoy it.

I had their Märzen yesterday, my first time tasting Rauchbier. The smoke was overpowering at first, and gradually over the course of the pint seemed to even out.

Great video! I visited Bamberg a few years ago and stayed in the inn on top of the Fassla brewpub. I love Bamberg, especially Schlenkerla rauchbier! It’s a shame that we can’t get it as fresh in the states...it’s just not the same in bottles.

Beer, Wine and Spirits Please keep your videos coming! They’re great! I ran into a group of four young US servicemen at the Volksfest in Bad Cannstatt on another trip to Germany. I was able to introduce them to some of my German friends and encouraged them to dive head first into the German culture as it appears you did. It was inspirational when I witnessed a retired US airman reunite with the kitchen crew and waitstaff at the Altstadt brewpub in Nuremberg. Franconia is wonderful!

I recently brewed a Märzen-style smoked beer myself, it turned out very well. I'm definitely doing that again some day. (I didn't make my own malt though, I used Weyermann beechwood smoked malt)
How strong was the smoked flavor? Have you tried Spezial smoked beer from Bamberg? The smoke flavor is not as strong as Schlenkerla and I really enjoyed there beer. Thanks for sharing. -Jeff
@@drinkdestinations It wasn't actually that strong but it was very noticeable and it was quite reminiscent of Schlenkerla. I had had the malt lying on a shelf for about 6 months before I used it so maybe it had lost some flavor over time. I used 3 kg in a 20L batch (about 66%). Next time I think I will make it 80% or so and use fresher malt. I have not tried the Spezial, I have to put that one on the list.

I simply love that smoked bacon smell. Unfortunately, it's hard to come by in my part of the world (Romania), but I always enjoy one when I can find it .
My wife and I feel the pain of Germany as a whole and Bamburg specifically, for the the pain this October of the Covid-19. If we could only get Schlenkeria Rauchbier here in the midwest of the USA we would lift one (or many) to the rafters for the best beer in Germany.
You can find plenty of sellers in the Midwest through the company's website and retailer locator (click the Union Jack symbol to get the English version of the site): shopfinder.schlenkerla.de/Shopfinder/http/shopfinder-schlenkerla-de/shopfinder-91356,l-en.html. I emailed them about current supplies, and Matthias wrote back directly; he connected us to a distirbutor we hadn't known about, and we ordered a nice supply for the winter!

William Knight gotcha. Yeah we were coming up from Vicenza, Italy with the 173rd. At first I didn’t want to leave Italy, but couldn’t have moved to a better city. Absolutely enjoyed my time there while I wasn’t deployed.
Am I the only one who gets a “bacon cheesewhiz” essenz? I truly enjoy this unique beer. It gives the feeling of you eating smoked sausage as well, and should go perfectly with a schnitzel.

Such a great debate! I’m not talking about oldest, but most historic having great and lasting importance in beer. My wife and I feel the pain of Germany as a whole and Bamburg specifically, for the the pain this October of the Covid-19. If we could only get Schlenkeria Rauchbier here in the midwest of the USA we would lift one (or many) to the rafters for the best beer in Germany.
You can find plenty of sellers in the Midwest through the company's website and retailer locator (click the Union Jack symbol to get the English version of the site): shopfinder.schlenkerla.de/Shopfinder/http/shopfinder-schlenkerla-de/shopfinder-91356,l-en.html. I emailed them about current supplies, and Matthias wrote back directly; he connected us to a distirbutor we hadn't known about, and we ordered a nice supply for the winter!
Used to run past this place as a young dumb private. The smells were amazing.

Am I the only one who gets a “bacon cheesewhiz” essenz? I truly enjoy this unique beer. It gives the feeling of you eating smoked sausage as well, and should go perfectly with a schnitzel.

Such a great debate! I’m not talking about oldest, but most historic having great and lasting importance in beer. You talk to Schlenkerla and they will say they are making the most historic beer(which is why I used this as the title) and not the oldest.
