You are absolutely spot on about the rivet counters! I was getting all wrapped up about the flaws in my work when your message, ‘build the thing for yourself’ hit me in the face like a slap from a wet fish! Thank you. I’ve graduated to wooden sailing ship kits now and I’m building the bloody thing for myself, now. Don’t let the bastards grind you down.

I got back into modeling after I retired and watching your channel have picked up tips that make my models better. And isn't that the point?
Well said, Harry. The problem with social media is that there are many people on it who lack social skills. And who have an ego the size of Nebraska, with a yen for bossing everyone else around. He actually started an argument over it so I split and never went back. Model building is not about stressing over perfection, we all want that but we have to accept that there are some things we just can't do! Just look at a 360° photo shoot of a Spitfire engine for example. You can scratch build a lot in the 32 scale but you're not going to get it all in there! So don't let the haters piss you off but stiff them right back by ignoring their shotgun comments! Build and enjoy!

Hey Mate, I have gone down the path of super accuracy, photo etch Blah Blah Blah. In the end my models are in my hobby room and so few people actually see them, and then none of them could actually criticise the end product, because they are not subject matter experts or modelers them selves. As I have got older, and to be fair the complexity of kits have increased, I find that sometimes I cannot be bothered with tiny parts and tiny decals that you cant see without a X-Ray Vision. At the end of the day I have learn to just enjoy my model making. E.G. I just completed a ME262 jet with the interior colour being chromate green instead of a dark grey. My mates will rave about how cool it is, and they wont know that the colour is incorrect. So what I have learnt is just to enjoy what I do, I don't enter competitions etc. I just model for my own enjoyment and that is the key. If it is not 100% accurate who cares. do what makes you happy!!!. Don't let these arsoles get you down!!!!

People have forgotten how to be an individual. Do what makes you happy. Since everyone has a keyboard they think their opinion is important and correct. Let’s go back to appreciating what others build and not how much you don’t like it.
your right harry. nice to hear your views and pluck that banjo mate. have had the same with motorcycles, that not the right bolt and all that malarkey i just say it works does it not and walk away ha ha have fun fella.
Don't take any notice of the drones I love your video me and my grandson love watching and we try not to miss any I love your ships and wish I could do them any where near as good as you mate keep the vids coming mate
100% spot on Harry. I watch to enjoy/admire what you do and say. Keep on going and maybe a banjo lick to two would be fun too. Cheers mate. PS I miss Becker too and respect where he is at the moment. 🤗
Good on ya mate. A pom here, Love what you do and what you say. Got back in to the art and loving it. Getting long in the tooth, building the stash for retirement lol
I remember posting one of my builds on a facebook modelling pages, where I commented about my disappointment at Revell moulding copyright blurb onto the bottom of a car chassis. I got inane replies along the lines of "do you show the bottom to your friends" or "don't get beat out of shape, it's only a model"...
I do not do things like you do. I like Tamiya and I do some historic rivet counting for my models. But that is the thing for my models. As you do ( and model ) different things than me I find your modelling refreshing and attractive and have learnt many things from you. thank you for that and to the social media for making easy talking between Spain and Australia.
Greetings Harry from a frozen and sub-zero Chicagoland area, USA. The internet for me has increased my interest and enthusiasm in the hobby. Being in touch regularly with people all around the world to share and discuss the hobby I love is a great thing! Sadly, the dregs of society and the world exist everywhere! No matter what we post, what we share there are those that take a morbid- and perhaps mentally disturbed- pleasure in trolling people. Best thing to do is ignore the bastards! Don't give them any time or recognition at all! Fokker the trolls!!!
Yes it has given me a wider audience and let me make so many new friends I may not have otherwise. Just need a drongo filter to keep those Gallahs off my back!
You're a star Harry... love your videos and you've taught me so much about model building... bugger the blighters and sailor on bud... oh and pluck that banjo!!!!!!
Totally agree with what you are saying. I build models for me and not anyone else. I am part of a few groups on social media and as soon as I mention a kit, someone tells me what I should buy as extras and what modifications I need to do to “correct” the inaccuracies in the kit. I take great pleasure in ignoring them and posting what I build to my standards. Keep up the great work. Love your videos.
I primarily do old vacuform models and scratch wood ships. The forums were a great help at first. I now avoid social media (except for youtube where I choose). Totally agree. I see the effects on people all around and just choose to ignore and focus on what I find fun and de stressing.
G'day there Harry & a very Happy New Year to you and all your regular viewers. First up I'm a Kiwi, and despite being predominately an aircraft modeller, I watch pretty much all your clips as I enjoy your lighthearted banter and your overall approach to modelling. So despite your debatable comment about sharing(?) sheep being more of a kiwi thing... a heartfelt keep 'em coming and also give us a plucking good rendition on that banjo device... BRgds B from Canterbury NZ
The lore of Harry has made it as far as Shetland! Truly you are a global force for good! Might have to become a channel member! Lang may your lum reek!
Thanks for speaking the truth- social media is more garbage than good. I've learned a lot online from others, but I've been agitated by the very same websites. Like you said- it's your channel to do as you please do keep doing it your way!
The disadvantage of social media is that the boundaries of what is good or not are becoming higher and higher and that is why people are either deterred or stressed. Only use social media for some ideas and the rest just use your imagination or your modeling skills and just enjoy it.
Good morning Harry well it is here in London ! great take on social media not on it my self can't be bothered thanks for all the content a curry is on its way look forward to the next one great work as always
Harry some people have nothing better to do than count rivets so they can feel superior to others in the hobby. I build what I like and make it the best I can for ME, because ultimately you are the one who looks at it every day and are the best judge of your own work, and if you are happy with it F the haters. You just keep doing you
Well said Harry , I never have given a s… what others say about my models after all us modellers are the ones looking at them every day . Greetings from the West
Well said Harry! Think we've all been there and will be again, not just on social media as we know RUclips and Fb etc... but on modelling forums. Me I just ignore them and don't reply. As you say "IT'S A MODEL" and "ITS A HOBBY" it's not a competition or a life and death scenario, we all build them, each to our own abilities, no one is perfect or ever will be mate.
I used to not rely, as you say it is best to ignore them. However RUclips keeps prompting me to reply to every unanswered post. So it’s either hide or ban for the Gallahs
Block them and dont let them get to you. For a brief moment I was thinking of uploading my scratch builds of Riva speedboat and some more on a website but after reading some of the comments: hell no. They pluck away at every shade of paint and rivet included and not included in the model etc. I am not giving them the pleasure so f them. Let a man enjoy his hobby. Greetings from Netherlands. Love your channel.
Harry, I watch you and all the other modelers, Because I enjoy the humor, the banter also for the experience and knowledge, techniques and probably the biggest reason is I enjoy watching for the joy and passion modelers have for what they do, I build mostly cars and a few planes, I don't think it's the subject so much as the passion and enjoyment they get from doing it, your channel and your videos are filled with both those thing, just keep it up.
Harry. Thanks for your ability to say what I think many modellers don't feel they can say. I am basically a part of one model group and that group has been great for my introduction into the hobby. See youon FTRC and thanks for all the help via FB you have offered.
@@HarryHoudiniModels the amount you know could fill a few chapters in a how to book. What I enjoy most is when you get creative and come up with things like the Rat harp tool. That shows in itself that you are extremely talented and a great problem solver. Keep up the fantastic work.
Well, I'm glad it's not just me! I've only recently started a RUclips scale modelling channel and for the most part, the comments I've had have been really positive and encouraging. Inevitably of course, there were a few individuals who seemed to take extreme personal offense, especially to my first video, and left some very angry, spiteful and personally insulting comments. It boggles my mind that such people actually exist and I have to wonder if they really take the hobby (and themselves) so seriously, or do they just enjoy stirring the shit whilst enjoying the safety and anonymity of a computer in their mom's basement? Do they even build models...?! Keep the up the good work Harry and don't let the bastards grind you down!
Harry you are one of the modelers who inspired me to start my own channel and also your tips in your videos have helped me out a lot. So you shouldn’t listen to anything those rivet counting wombats say. Keep going as you want to and take care and Godspeed sir
Hi Harry I couldn't agree more with what you saying. I have tried it myself several times. Together with 5 other model builders from Denmark. I have organized an annual model competition here in Denmark since the early 90s. And every single year there have always been one or two who complain about something. But we must be doing someting right. Because model builders keep coming, and now we are the ones who have held the most model competitions for the longest time in all of Denmark. Thank You for You channel from a fan from Danmark Keep up your good work DownUnder. And Congratulations to Australia with Your own and new Queen Mary of Denmark.🇦🇺🇩🇰
Great video! Regarding the Arizona... it was more like 80 years, but at that point, who's counting? Regarding the rest of the video, in my humble opinion, and somewhat experience.... yeah, social media is a double edged sword. Moderated pages or channels tend to be better than unmoderated places. As such, someone gives you lip or harrasses you about how you enjoy your build, moderation can get rid of the comment. As such, things tend to stay more civil. Places like, well... here on youtube, there is no such moderation. Its up to you as a channel owner to muck your own stall (outside of a few youtube based standards, like threats of physical harm). From the gents in my local club, it seems that a lot of the negative nancies on social media end up as IPMS judges at the shows 😂
Harry I want to ask for help with getting into building wooden sailing ships please. Also please don't ever let social media change you as a person and model building. I would like to have someone to help guide me in the right direction and this goes for any other modelers that would like to help me. I would like to try to at least give it a try. Please keep doing your models your way and have fun also play the bango from time to time.
I started a series of videos, during the plague, called the Marina Balcony. It was an introduction to wood ship modelling. Later this month I will continue the series as I get back to the Bounty.
@@HarryHoudiniModels never been to Oz, but love your tell it how it is style. It’s a refreshing honesty many have lost or hide in Europe out of fear. Good on you mate. 😊👍
I'm 50 next week and reflecting back on the kits I have made in my life. Old Matchbox and Revell kits that aren't seen as up to today's standards. But then, as now, make me happy. But Social Media can't accept this. When the Internet started I'd get depressed and discouraged by the standard of what I was seeing online but would keep going. But a little of Social Media is much more toxic and corrosive to the modelling spirit. So I try and avoid it and grateful for encouraging SM posters like you, Plasmo, Night Shit et al. Please keep posting, please play the banjo and look forward to a nice Drop Bear kit I hope you can make one day 🙂
I had a dilbert telling me how Ordnance Survey maps are produced, despite me telling him I had been a cartographic draughtsman with the OS for four years; sometimes you can't get through to some people... (his explaination was so far from the real process as to be fantasy). Keep up the good work Harry, I'm enjoying watching you!
Hi Harry. Thank you for posting your video on social media. My younger brother has been collecting toy soldiers his whole life and last year he opened his own RUclips channel to share his collection and knowledge about toy soldiers. the majority of comments are encouraging, but in recent months he has been bombarded with nasty comments. he was feeling bad about it so I forwarded your video about Social Media Ruins Scale Modeling. Your video helped him feel better about what he has been doing with his channel. I have been building model ships my whole life and I love watching your videos on the Revell 1/110 HMS Bounty and the Airfix 1/144 St Louis. I'm looking forward to watching your next video on the St Louis. I'm presently working on the Airfix 1/72 Golden Hinde.
Hello Harry. Loved your video and I couldn't agree more with your message at the end. The video also brought to mind a comment I got from another modeler about something I posted on a Facebook group page. This person asked me why I wanted to build the Bismarck when so many people have built it already and said I should think carefully about what I should build next. I replied saying that this kit has been sitting in my stash for at least 25 years, I finally have the time and space to build it and I want to build it. If I were to follow the logic of his advice, that would mean I would not be able to decide what to build since everything I have in my stash has been built by someone already 😄. I am not a skilled modeler (I got back into the hobby last year after a 30 year hiatus) and I usually build kits straight out of the box. Like you and most people in the scale modeling community, I enjoy building models. Anyway, keep up the good work and keep enjoying this fabulous hobby (even though it can be a little expensive as my wife is finding out 😅).
I am modeleling since covid and was inspired by the youtube model gods. But it is so good to hear people say, make mistakes, you do you. Just enjoy the hobby and finished models how you like them. So keep up the good work.!
Hit the nail on the head Harry, I learned to just not respond to trolls its the best way deprive them of oxygen. Keep up the great work and yes you do inspire, I been enjoying my modeling again and I just started something I never done before. figures I hate doing figures but the only way to learn is by having ago. Any tips would be appreciated. Or maybe a video? I have another look at your viking ship to see how you went about them maybe a good start. All the best Roger

Ha ha ha! Been watching your channel for a while now, and always wondered what FTRC in the top corner stood for. 🤣
Fokker the Rivet Counters… I have T shirts with the slogan emblazoned in my shop
People have forgotten how to be an individual. Do what makes you happy. Since everyone has a keyboard they think their opinion is important and correct. Let’s go back to appreciating what others build and not how much you don’t like it.
Well said
Absolutely agree with everything you said. Keep on forging forward Harry and happy modeling. Love your videos.
Thanks Reghardt

100% spot on Harry. I watch to enjoy/admire what you do and say. Keep on going and maybe a banjo lick to two would be fun too. Cheers mate. PS I miss Becker too and respect where he is at the moment. 🤗
Banjo tuned amd ready for plucking Edward
Good on ya mate.
A pom here,
Love what you do and what you say.
Got back in to the art and loving it.
Getting long in the tooth, building the stash for retirement lol
Those teeth get longer and our bald hair gets shorter… strange isn’t it?
I remember posting one of my builds on a facebook modelling pages, where I commented about my disappointment at Revell moulding copyright blurb onto the bottom of a car chassis. I got inane replies along the lines of "do you show the bottom to your friends" or "don't get beat out of shape, it's only a model"...
Yep, no one can make a comment or have an opinion about their own model, but the Gallahs think they can do it to everyone else! Absurd.
Fair enough! You can count your own rivets, I have always said that, just not anyone else’s unless they ask you.
Remember we do this for fun.
That is exactly right!
Well said !!!!!

Your channel is fantastic !!
Good on you Mr Fumble Thumbs
I really enjoy your channel. Yes, social media sucks and people are assholes. Keep up the good work mate!
Good on you Michael
Keep up all the good work Harry! (Yes, please play some banjo!) Greetings from an old Fokker from Sweden❤
More Banjo coming soon matey
Yes we want more of the banjo!
and you shall get it!
You're a star Harry... love your videos and you've taught me so much about model building... bugger the blighters and sailor on bud... oh and pluck that banjo!!!!!!
That’s 4 votes now.. Thanks Wade
Good on you Ziggy
Keep doing what you are doing-I have learned a lot about how to build models watching your channel!
Great to hear John
Build from your heart and you can never go wrong.
Very true
Brilliant Harry, please never let them grind you down! Keep up the great work.
Grinders have been banished Alister
I primarily do old vacuform models and scratch wood ships. The forums were a great help at first. I now avoid social media (except for youtube where I choose).
Totally agree. I see the effects on people all around and just choose to ignore and focus on what I find fun and de stressing.
Social Media is a cesspool Mark… but we can skim the turds
G'day there Harry & a very Happy New Year to you and all your regular viewers. First up I'm a Kiwi, and despite being predominately an aircraft modeller, I watch pretty much all your clips as I enjoy your lighthearted banter and your overall approach to modelling. So despite your debatable comment about sharing(?) sheep being more of a kiwi thing... a heartfelt keep 'em coming and also give us a plucking good rendition on that banjo device... BRgds B from Canterbury NZ
Cheers Bro!
Epic rant mate- love it! Great stuff, cheered me right up! Hugs from the far and cold north of Scotland!
Brrrrrr you'll need a wee dram to warm ye up me laddie
The lore of Harry has made it as far as Shetland! Truly you are a global force for good! Might have to become a channel member! Lang may your lum reek!
It's not just a problem with model making, it's the same for EVERYTHING on [anti]social media.
The safety of a nutter behind a keyboard… no consequences to their rudeness and hateful speech
Thanks for speaking the truth- social media is more garbage than good. I've learned a lot online from others, but I've been agitated by the very same websites. Like you said- it's your channel to do as you please do keep doing it your way!
I will Mr G thanks for commenting
The disadvantage of social media is that the boundaries of what is good or not are becoming higher and higher and that is why people are either deterred or stressed. Only use social media for some ideas and the rest just use your imagination or your modeling skills and just enjoy it.
Enjoyment is the key Rene
Good morning Harry well it is here in London ! great take on social media not on it my self can't be bothered
thanks for all the content a curry is on its way look forward to the next one great work as always
Ooooh curry for breakfast, my favourite start to the day. Thanks John
keep up the good work Harry more banjo stay safe have a good week
More Banjo it is then
Keep on doing what you're doing Harry. You are informative and entertaining. Thank you
Good on you Steve I will
Harry some people have nothing better to do than count rivets so they can feel superior to others in the hobby. I build what I like and make it the best I can for ME, because ultimately you are the one who looks at it every day and are the best judge of your own work, and if you are happy with it F the haters. You just keep doing you
I will do me… it’s the only person I know how to do :)
Well said Harry , I never have given a s… what others say about my models after all us modellers are the ones looking at them every day . Greetings from the West
Thanks Dirk… a bit hot over your way right now
Yeah a little bit, looks like you guys got another storm drifting in
Well said Harry!
Thanks Lovvr
Harry, I watch you and all the other modelers, Because I enjoy the humor, the banter also for the experience and knowledge, techniques and probably the biggest reason is I enjoy watching for the joy and passion modelers have for what they do, I build mostly cars and a few planes, I don't think it's the subject so much as the passion and enjoyment they get from doing it, your channel and your videos are filled with both those thing, just keep it up.
I will keep it up George. Thanks for your support.
I’m with you, Harry. One of the best things you’ve said is that Scale modeling is a pointless hobby. We do it for ourselves.
It’s all wabi sabi matey… good to hear you liked my pointless video
Bring back the plucking Harry. Loving your work here 😀
I can pluck!
Harry. Thanks for your ability to say what I think many modellers don't feel they can say. I am basically a part of one model group and that group has been great for my introduction into the hobby.
See youon FTRC and thanks for all the help via FB you have offered.
Thanks JJ happy to share the little I know
@@HarryHoudiniModels the amount you know could fill a few chapters in a how to book.
I have an anti-grinder hide these days… thanks matey
Harry you are one of the modelers who inspired me to start my own channel and also your tips in your videos have helped me out a lot. So you shouldn’t listen to anything those rivet counting wombats say. Keep going as you want to and take care and Godspeed sir
Thank you Charlemagne… I just had a moment of doubt and depression… but making this video got me out of my funk. Thank you for your support.
Thank You for You channel from a fan from Danmark
Keep up your good work DownUnder.
And Congratulations to Australia with Your own and new
Queen Mary of Denmark.🇦🇺🇩🇰
Oooh yes we now have a Queen!
Cheers Harry love what you've said and thanks for making me mile today
One good smile and you made my day too Paul
Ignore the idiots. They aren't worth your breath. I love your videos. They are inspirational. To quote Bob Ross "Don't forget it's your world!"
That is so true Edward. I won’t let those drongos into my world then… non shall pass!
From the gents in my local club, it seems that a lot of the negative nancies on social media end up as IPMS judges at the shows 😂
I wondered where they went… no wonder I don’t like putting my builds in their comps.
Keep doing what you've always done mate, it'll keep the haters pissed off, and i agree, they can fuck off. Stay strong, the community needs you
Nice to be needed… thanks for the support Ice
Keep it up Harry.... I'll always watch your videos!
Good on you Ben
Harry I want to ask for help with getting into building wooden sailing ships please. Also please don't ever let social media change you as a person and model building. I would like to have someone to help guide me in the right direction and this goes for any other modelers that would like to help me. I would like to try to at least give it a try. Please keep doing your models your way and have fun also play the bango from time to time.
I started a series of videos, during the plague, called the Marina Balcony. It was an introduction to wood ship modelling. Later this month I will continue the series as I get back to the Bounty.
Keep doing what you do, love your format. A good break for those that take themselves far too seriously……
I am far too absurd to even take myself seriously… I mean, have you seen my moustache?
Good point Harry, on point as always. Loving the new logo btw. 😁👍
Thanks.. It was a fun one to design
Please keep posting, please play the banjo and look forward to a nice Drop Bear kit I hope you can make one day 🙂
Drop Bear you say.. hmmmm that will go nicely with my Hoop Snake
Yes blowhards who have no idea and are deaf to those that do.
Nice one Harry👍🏻
Thanks 👍 John
Thanks Ron… new sailing ship build starts this week: Airfix Prince
Still cheaper than H00kers and B00ze every week LOL
I am modeleling since covid and was inspired by the youtube model gods. But it is so good to hear people say, make mistakes, you do you. Just enjoy the hobby and finished models how you like them. So keep up the good work.!
I will matey
Hit the nail on the head Harry, I learned to just not respond to trolls its the best way deprive them of oxygen.
Keep up the great work and yes you do inspire, I been enjoying my modeling again and I just started something I never done before. figures I hate doing figures but the only way to learn is by having ago. Any tips would be appreciated. Or maybe a video? I have another look at your viking ship to see how you went about them maybe a good start. All the best Roger
The only figures I like are sans outfits about 5 foot 4 and covered in honey hehe
Love your blog and don't change how you do things . I totally agree with you about SM and avoid Facebook etc.. LOL at your comments. 🇬🇧
