Additional Steps for Dark Souls III
1. The current DarkSoulsIII.exe will crash while loading with mods enabled. You will need to replace the DarkSoulsIII.exe in the \Steam\steamapps\common\DARK SOULS III\Game folder with the one found in the description of the Cinders mod here: www.nexusmods.com/darksouls3/...
You ONLY need the DarkSoulsIII.exe, not the full mod. The exe is in the description under a section labeled "Compatibility."
2. Use the following Launch Option: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%

If you're receiving an error about a "corrupted save" which prevents you from starting Elden Ring, do the following to resolve.
1. Go to Desktop mode and rename mod folder to mod-bak
2. Boot into Game mode and launch Elden Ring
3. Log into the game completely, then save and quit
4. Go back into Desktop mode and rename mod-bak to mod
5. Boot back into Game mode and enjoy your mods
The issue is you need to launch the game with the latest regulation.bin completely unmodified. After you've started the game and logged out, you're then free to use modified regulation.bin without issue. Hope this helps!
is there also another fix, this one didnt work for me ;(
@@xxyxxyyyxIf you're still trying to fix this, I had to go back into my 'properties' section of steam for the game and remove the launch options we altered, and then it allowed me to log into the game properly.
A straightforward and clear guide how to mod Elden Ring on Steam Deck that I may just be able to do it correctly now. Thank You
This guide is AMAZING!! thank you SOO much for making it! you explain things soo well and concisely , this needs much more views!! you're the only youtuber who made this guys crazily enough..
I was worried the mods wouldnt work well on the Deck but thank god they do! they even work similarly with Sekiro too with the Launch options for that dll file stuff
great video does it work the same for sekiro mods?
This guide was so helpful. I did it from start to finish entirely on my steam deck. Thanks!
The zipping unzipping process please help
@@androkairupan3033 Navigate to the downloads folder. Click on the file you downloaded, then right click the files of the mod you want to use, then click extract. You'll be given an option to extract said files to a location of your choice. This is how you unzip files on the steam deck.
It took me 4 hours of trying other tutorials and finally, finally got the mods working the way i need. EVery other tutorial i found only ever showed how to do it on PC, but never on the actual Steam Deck. Thank you, now i can play ER casually, with Pausing and no Rune loss on death XD
Lame asf
Thank you so much for this! After too many hours trying to make it work i found your video and it saved my life!
Straight to the point, no bs around and vey cleared instruction . Subscribed !!!👍👍
Thank you bro got it to work the first time and now I'm the avatar in elden ring
amazing tutorial everything works for me after making sure that the mod file is where you said it should be. I followed another tutorial for pc and he didnt pull out the folder and that made all the difference
Thanks man, this was clear and helpful.
Thanks for the guide man, It worked great!
it took me til the berserker armor mod for me to notice the hawk reference in the channel name, imediately followed by a griffith pfp, im smort.
great tutorial btw, very clear
Thanks for this. Still works perfect!
Dude, thank you SO much for this! Honestly didn't expect to get it working the first try (first time modding a game), but it worked flawlessly!
I did the entire process on the Steam Deck, for anyone wondering if they need a PC or Windows etc. to do it.
You did everything on the steam deck so no transfer with USB ? Please lmk if you tweaked any of the instructions in the video have been trying for months and still no luck
Helpp how
Worked like a charm! You're a Tarnished and a saint!
How did you get it to work? I did everything in the video but can’t get reforged to work
@@scottyboi2098 I just followed along with his video step by step. Every time he said 'next do this' I'd pause the video and do that step. Sorry that I can't elaborate anything else. Hope you got it working.
Dude you just made my day this worked in linux mint . I want to make a video and give you all the credit thank you so freaking much.
It finally worked, thank you so much, honestly an immaculate guide. Everything in this video is easy to view, the speed is perfect - thank you so much
Thank you so much! This worked an absolute treat :)
This vid was a perfect starting point for me. I got the seemless and the randomizer working at the same time. But it took a lot of trial and error!
Teach me
Thank you thank you thank you!!! This was a wonderful and nice tutorial! I am really bad at FromSoftware games and only have a steam deck to play elden ring. I was able to load in an easy mode mod for myself using this tutorial! Now I can finally play without crying haha! I actually did all the steps of the tutorial directly on my deck and it still worked btw, for those who do not have a computer or drive to their disposal.
How please enlighten me
I tried to do the same but somehow the mod seems to not working at all or maybe I download the wrong version of the mod I think lol
Thanks. Got some lower back problems so to be able to play a modded elden ring without having to sit by my chair is great.
This is awesome and easy to follow, you should totally do a emulation vid if not already as I noticed yuzu :)
Thank you so much !
This is a very clear and useful step by step tutorial for me, a newbie enter to the Elden Ring game recently.
Now I can change my female character into a pretty looking by using mods.
Great JOB!
Thanks for the video, you just gained a new subscriber
You’ve probably seen it a lot but thank you so much for making this video. As of 01/08/22, it worked just as shown, exactly. I don’t really want to mod the game other than just make it easier. I like to explore and conquer not die 15,000 times to finally kill that boss.
Agreed, I know god mode is kinda lame but I’m really enjoying exploring every crevice of the game with no fear of death. I beat the game without mods already and this 2nd time around I’m going into areas I avoided because it was just so difficult.
friend, did you save the easy mod in the ch folder or did you leave it outside?
@@ricardomartinezbenavidez3727 in the main folder. It has to replace the default regulation bin file. That’s for one mod only tho. If you do multiple that’s more complex
thanks hun it was crashin at first but now works. Finally can play convergence mod on the go
Can you help me I'm trying to use convergence but it won't work
thanks got Elden Ring Reforged and Seamless Coop working on mine and my brothers steam decks.
If I may, how did you get ERR to work ? I can't seem to get it to work on my steam deck. I have all the files (ERR ones) in the "mod" folder but when I launch, it doesn't seem to work in game ?
how did you get seamless coop working?
Manjaro Linux user, worked for me flawlessly. I'd bet this could just be a go-to guide for Linux users in general.
Hey thanks for the tutorial, it is possible that you can share a video where it explains how to organize the mods after you download them? This is regarding the part where you said that they need to be in the corresponding folder: chr, menu, msg, etc.
Great tutorial thank you so much
Thank you so very much! I have wanted to play this game since it released, but my hands are impaired by arthritis. Without ‘easy mode’ it was impossible. Now I can play!!!
That's fantastic to hear! Have fun! You're in for a treat. 😁
friend, did you save the easy mod in the ch folder or did you leave it outside?
@@ricardomartinezbenavidez3727 truthfully, I have given up modding on Steam Deck. It’s just too fiddly. Next month I will switch to ROG Ally and modding can be relatively easy again.
I downloaded easymod, but it only has one folder and one icon, should I copy it to the mods folder?
thanks for the vid! Good and easy to understand, but what about the randomizer mods? Are they able to work on SteamDeck?
Thanks so much for this
Thanks for your Video :) Dose it work with easy Mode mod, too?
People seem to forget you can download mods and files on the deck itself
You had me at the up too the mod overlay part. Like how do i know where to place what mods I've downloaded. For example the chr file and other files you have there. I have no clue what I'm doing with the mod I just downloaded lol. I'm sure if I had a modding background I would know what I was doing. This is my first trying to mod.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I do have a question regarding how to revert back to the original game (when the dlc comes out, I wanna play it normally). Do we just have to delete all the additional files that we added or is there an easier way (like verifying steam files and reverting back to its original state)?
You can delete the files is you'd like. However, the absolute simplest way to revert to the default game is simply to remove the launch command.
Not gonna lie its really dissappointing to see this is working for everyone but I can't for the life understand your process here. even slowing the video down, I follow the steps and my folders look way different than yours. somebody please help me :(
Ur just dumb lol
great video does it work the same for sekiro mods?
I can't thank you enough!
Between Cloudef's page and your video, I was able to get seamless co-op working with only 1 hiccup (which was really easily fixed).
However... how can we go back to vanilla ER? I'd like to play the DLC day 1, and not risk getting banned
Hey! You've probably forgotten but... How did you get it to work with Seamless Co-op?
@@tila-tsolihey man, still need help?
Can you do a guide specifically for the convergence mod? I can't get it to work.
Perfect tutorial, quick question, how to get back to the game without the mods on it ? And do u have to do all this again to play the mod u already installed or is it saved or something?
Simplest way to deactivate mods is to remove the launch command. Then if you want to enable them again just add the launch command back. You only have to reapply mods after an update, especially if the regulation.bin got updated. Otherwise you should be good.
Great tutorial! Was only able to getting working in desktop mode or was this intended, takes forever to load in gaming mode.
Not sure what I did, but ended up booting into gaming mode and launching
It works so gud
Great Tutorial, worked like a charm. In saying that, will the mods/ game still function say if a DLC or new update drops?
Glad it worked out! In the event a new update drops everything should still work, but there might be some irregularities due to the regulation.bin getting updated. Mod creators usually update their mods when this happens, but if they don't you can update the regulation.bin yourself with DSAnimStudio.
Hi I was wondering if you can do something similar for state of decay 2 on steam deck
This is an amazing guide! unfortunately im running into a problem of when i connect my usb to my steam deck, nothing pops up and it makes it frustrating trying to copy files over. Is there a program that you use to help?
You don't have to format just plug usb in on desktop mode and it'll show. At least on the beta steam os
@@pinheadlarry7839 gotcha ill try it out later. Thanks!
Any idea if this guide would work for Sekiro too?
Hey man great tutorials, but can i know what is the average of fps during battle?
This depends entirely on your steam Deck settings rather than what mods you're using. There are some good videos out there that cover this. I don't know all my settings, but most are low with a few things like draw distance being high and textures being medium. I also have it locked to 30fps which it maintains rather well.
So do i need to extract the mod file i download from nexus to the mod file ? Or just let it be like that without need to extract it?
I really need a video that'll explain how to install randomizer. Game just keep crashing on startup and I dunno what to do:(
Thank you.. THANK YOU!! I actually managed to do all the steps directly off of the steam deck so I didn't even need a usb! I was able to get the easy mode mod so I can enjoy the game without massive frustration. Thank you again, you are seriously the best
Was working perfectly for around 20 hours up until yesterday. Only mod installed is the berserker armor. Not sure what broke it but I get to the white screen and then the game kicks me back to SteamOS. Tried doing a fresh install and reinstalling the mods but nothing seems to work. Anyone else had this issue and if so have you found a solution?
Will this work for Dark Souls 2 as well? I'm trying to mod the SotFS version.
How about the Convergence Mod?
Hi, sorry to bother, have you gotten Elden Ring Convergence working on steam deck? It's not really the same as other mods. Breaking my head over it rn
For some reason it doesn’t run when I try to start the game from desktop mode but it works on game mode!
Thank you so much for this guide!
i know im late to this but im having an issue with loading mods, it loads the custom dlls, the ones in the mods folder, but all the actual *mods* that go in the mod folder dont seem to do anything, is this unusual?
Thanks for the great video! Due to the upcoming DLC, how do I disable the mod and resume online play?
In my theory,
1. Delete launch options (disable mode)
2. Rename "start_protechted_game.exe" and "eldenring.exe" to their original names.
If I do these two things, will I be able to go online without a van?
Glad it helped! You should be able to just remove the launch option and be good. I would imagine the update will also update the exe. However, renaming them back to their original names would also be fine.
Hey amazing guide but I do have a question what would I do if you want to go back to vanilla elden ring how do I unistall the mods so I can go online again?
Easiest way would be to remove the launch command. This would completely disable mods. If you wanted to then go online normally you would need to revert back to the original start_protected_game.exe.
@@Whitehawkx thank you so much!!! Wanted to know if I can swap back and forth lol
I assume this has been broken in an update? I followed this to the letter, trying to add a mod that changes the player character, but despite it being in the Parts folder, and doing everything this vid says, The game loads normally as if it didn't even detect any 'inappropriate activity' on the title screen.
Do I need the elden mod loader for ds3? Or is there another mod loader for it?
Do you think you could make a tutorial using DSMapStudio? I haven't figured out a way to get it to work on the Deck, and Yapped is no longer supported.
DSMapStudio will have to be used on a PC. I might put together a video showing how to add lines and upgrade the regulation.bin whenever there's an update. That's all most ppl will need.
Quick question. Can I mod elden ring on my pc and play it on my steam deck? Is that possible or I’ll have to follow this video?
Awesome video, but for some reason my mods aren’t showing up in game, followed this to the T as well. Game starts in offline mode tells me inappropriate activity etc. but the mod just won’t show up for some reason. I’m using Clever’s moveset pack. I know this is a late comment but any help would be awesome
Did you ever find how to fix this i have the same problem
im trying the reforged mod of the game.....the game starts correctly but i don't see any difference, in fact , at the first grace i should see diferent option but it seems like the base game, some help please? thanks
Are you using windows? If so does this work with steamOS
Hey brother. Thanks a million for a concise tutorial. I'm new to mods, could you possibly explain to me what exactly needs to be done for ds3 mods?
Hey there. The only difference with DS3 it's there's an older exe for the game you need to replace the default one with. You can find it in the cinders mod description page which I've linked in the description. Also the launcher command is different which I've also put in the video description. Other than those two things everything is exactly the same.
@@Whitehawkx thanks for your response. I've been trouble shooting since I sent that last message 😤 Cinders mod properly downloaded and followed tutorials. When I try to launch my game it says "preparing to launch" and then nothing happens. The icon on the task bar shows up for 2 seconds, green circle showing its loading, than dissapears.
I am connected to wifi. I also tried without
I have the proper exe
I have the comand txt inserted in the properties General folder.
I would kill for some assistance here 🙏🏻
When I take out the command text it launches the game successfully without cinders mod. Fml
There are 2 steps that I don't quite understand.
1. Have 7sip installed and use it to "open the Main and Models XIP file.
2. Extract the contents of the Main and Models ZIP files in your DS3 game directory ~\steamapps\common\DARK SOULS II\GAME\
@@ElijahAOcean I'm not sure about the XIP files. The reason the game isn't launching though is because you're using the default DarkSoulsIII.exe. You need to use an older version in order for modengine2 to work. Go to the Cinders mod I have linked in the description of this video. On the page is takes you to about halfway down is a section titled "Compatibility." There's a download linked here to download an older version of the DarkSoulsIII.exe. You have to use this older version for the game to launch. Just to be clear - You do *NOT* need the Cinders mod for modengine2 to work. You only need the DarkSoulsIII.exe you can download from the mod's description page. Hope this helps.
@@Whitehawkx unfortunately, I was using the correct file you mentioned. I replaced the up to date exe in the game folder with the one from that link. Didn't work.
I then tried from scratch 4 times with slight variations. Nothings working. Have you actually followed these steps from scratch to play ds3 cinders?(no offense)
I deleted and re-download everything.
3 files from nexus mods.
I tried putting the folders of those 3 nexusmod files into the game folder. Didn't work. Then tried putting the files inside the nexusmod-folders into the game folder. Didn't work.
I noticed 1 folder from nexus mod has a lot of the same folder names, for example sounds folder. So then I tried having both the old and the cinder folders in the game folder, that didn't work. Then I tried over writing the ds3steam folders, such as sound etc with the cinder folders. That did not work.
I'm about to through the steam deck onto the highway 🤡 which I know isn't your problem, so thank you trying to help 🙏🏻 I don't know what to do next. I've been wanting to play this mod since it came out -- I feel I live in a simulation and these mods don't actually exist 🤖 lol right??👀 currently smashing my head through the wall and into the matrix.
I wonder if you could set up a file on steam deck that works, and some how send that entire folder to me, that way I can replace the contents of the steam game folder with yours and win this 10hr+ battle against the robots.
@@ElijahAOcean Just confirmed that Cinders does work, with some slight tweaks. There are 3 zips you download for the mod. Inside the Main and Models zips is a "Cinders" folder. You need to take everything *inside* and copy to the "mod" folder. Inside the setup zip the only files you need is the HoodiePatcher dll and ini. Move both of these to the "mods" folder. Also, there was a typo for the launch command in the description of my video. Be sure to copy of the new command and use it instead. With this the mod works as expected. Good luck.
The mod contains only regulation.bin file, i put it inside the mod folder. No luck... Do i need to delete the original regulation.bin file inside 'Game' folder?
would it be possible to get the seamless co-op mod or swords mastery for instance on the steam deck? would it perform at ~40fps or more?
Seamless works easy and well
so i was playing it perfectly fine in desktop mode then I went to the normal mode and then when I tried to open it it wouldn't open and I tried it for desktop mode aswell and it did the same thing it isn't giving me an error message either does anyone know how to fix this issue
Hello ! I tried your method but can't seem to make Elden ring work with both "*Seamless coop*" and "*Reforged*".
I have both "mod" and "mods" folders in my ER "game" folder. Did all the steps, set the launch config for steam...
I unzipped all "*ERR*" folders in the "mod" one while "*Seamless coop*" .dll files are in the "mods" folder.
Seamless coop *seems* to work as I am greeted with the "Welcome, and thanks for installing seamless coop etc...".
But my game froze when I tried to create a new character to test if seamless coop worked.
I can't really tell what I did wrong, thanks for taking the time to read.
In case you were still having this issue, I got it to work by manually setting a mod load order in mod_loader_config.ini:
[loadorder]
lua.dll = 1
modengine2.dll = 2
elden_ring_seamless_coop.dll = 3
I don’t see the “mods” folder only the “mod” folder, and everything shows differently than you?
Edit2: it works! I tried again after first uninstalling Elden Ring and deleting what was left of the /game folder, then reinstalling.
----
Maybe I missed something, but this didn't work for me as of 2/25/24. I'll go through it again and ensure I did all the steps correctly, but is there any chance that a recent update could've broken this method?
Edit: for reference, just to test the functionality I downloaded Cat Ears for ER and put the 'parts' folder included in it into the 'mod' folder for ModEngine2 (like I see a parts folder in your example mods), and nothing changes in game to reflect the mod.
Everything should still be working. Just to confirm - you also included the additional files for mod engine as well as the LAUNCH command? It looks like the at ears are for 2 specific head armors, so just want to make sure you're checking those armors specifically.
So far I pretty much have to always switch over to gaming mode to load the game, not sure why
would this work with the convergence mod??
I got everything onto the steam deck but when I open the game it runs into an issue with lua.dll and modengine.dll is there a way to fix this?
hey I followed your steps but I have a problem with a mod and it just has the regulation.bin file thats it what do I do?
I got jt and have been playing for 25 hours with the easy mod, but now it doesn't work all of a sudden and I have no idea why
im confused about the installing mods part how do i install a mod like seamless co op
So I have a question about the randomizer… it’s not as simple as just starting the game. There are settings that need to be set… and also, the game (on PC) gets launched through the mod interface.
This doesn’t seem to address that
This tutorial doesn't cover anything to do with the randomizer. I've been considering doing a second video just to cover that mod alone.
@@Whitehawkx dude, please!!! I’m having so much trouble finding a concise tutorial that works with both enemy and item randomization, any tips?
Umm i loaded elden and hav been met with a black screen with the elden ring cursor which i cannot move what shall i do?
Where do we put the downloaded files in the mod folder or the mods folder?
I did everything as directed but I did not receive the warning about being detected and playing offline at the beginning. I set it to "Play Offline" in settings, but im paranoid to start. I only used the Easy Mode mod which overwrites the regulation.bin - but thats it, and a modded save file. Im not sure if im safe or not. any tips here?
friend, did you save the easy mod in the ch folder or did you leave it outside?
Hi can i ask?im using steam deck 64gb version and 256gb sd card..is ther any tutorial for sd card users?
Idk if certain patches or updates were made since this tutorial but i did this and now elden ring wont launch at all
How’re you doing? I followed everything you said and my games not loading. It would say preparing to launch then, it’ll stop and back to the play button. Please help
Same problem I'm currently having. Did you figure it out?
Ok so the only issues Ive had is trying to get any mods that involve Regulation.bin files. I really just cant get any of them to work ever. I've tried to replacing the default version of the file, deleting or moving it into the mod or mods folder, editing the file myself through runebear... none of it ever seems to work out.
Any help? I really just want to use a runes mod so I dont have to grind runes anymore.
Runebear dropped support around 1.06. It won't load all references, so it will break every time you try to save your file. You need to use DSAnimStudio instead.
I downloaded the garden of eyes mod but i dont see the regulator bin of the chr folder
for me it says echo, when I press the start button on steam it says that the file echo was not found, make sure that you have entered the name correctly, what should I do
There isn't a mods folder for mine so what do I do?
I get a crash and when the game plays with no command the mods don’t show what am I doing wron?
My game will not load after adding the long path in LAUNCH
I didnt realize this but for some reason my "mod" folder dissapeared at some point. I couldnt get any mods to work becuase I was putting them in the mods folder.
I hate programming lol
I did not get a message about inappropriate activity detected, but the mods work now. Is that an issue, or would i not see that because i already play in Offline Mode?
It's probably because you're already in offline mode. As long as mods are working you should be fine.
I feel like my mod loader is working as it's own independent thing and just loads dll files when I start the game and the "regulation.bin" thing is confusing
Mod loader does load the dll files in the mods folder which in turns loads everything in the mod folder. This video is just how to get everything setup on Steam Deck. For a more in depth look at things like combining regulation.bin files together, there's other videos out there.
Can someone help me, ive done everything as tild and get the “inappropriate activity detected” message, but the mods wont work
Whenever I want to play Elden ring I can just boot from game mode right? I don't need to toggle anti cheat first in desktop then launch?
Correct. After setting everything up you can boot from game mode.
@@Whitehawkx Thank you!
The only thing I want to mod into the game is the Berserk armor (I'm pretty sure the exact mod at the end of the video). I've rewatched the video for, like, an hour but I can't get it to work. The armor appears in my inventory, but turns invisible when I wear it. What am I doing wrong?
Sounds like not all the files for the mod got copied over. Make sure you have in your mod folder the msg/engus folder and files as well as the parts folder and files. You also need to make sure you're using the regulation.bin for the latest version of the game, which in this case is 1.08.1. It looks like the mod itself does not include the latest regulation.bin and you have to download it separately.
@@Whitehawkx I know for certain I have the most up to date regulation bin, and I've downloaded the mod files again and again, and even individually counted every file from the mod page. At one point, I removed the mod folder from the Elden Ring game files entirely, and nothing had changed - the glitched armor was still being sold, it simply just turned invisible tho.
Any ideas what this means?
And also thanks for the video, it's a huge help in getting me this far!
Is this the same thing I would do if I wanna use the seamless co op mod?
You can use seamless co-op with this, but if that's all you need there's a different way to do it they you can find tutorials on.
