What makes it so many times sadder for me is that in her commentary for the song she said that she meant to sing until the end of the song, but she didn't because she was crying and then left it that way.
“I’ll tiptoe away so you won’t have to say you heard me leave” I lost it on that part 😭😭😭 If you love someone so much but they don’t love you anymore, the last thing that you want is to be an inconvenience to them. So you’d bow out and leave for good as quietly as possible.
The most emotional line every time for me is "you can have Manhattan, I know it's what you want." It shows a sign of respect and love even though they obviously are no longer together.
I just love how uncharacterized her voice is. She’s not trying to sound like Adele or every other singer nowadays. She’s just singing like herself, and I love that so much. I could pick her out of a hundred voices.
I think its fair to compare Sara Bareilles to Adele, although i do like sara's lyricisim significantly more than Adeles... This might be because Adele is more mainstream or commercialised, but i think Sara's songs (new and old) are more heartfelt than Adeles, i mean Adele has very emotional songs as well, but it doesnt really ever go further than that, compared to Sara her lyrics are more complex and referential maybe that makes her less pop or something but i really enjoy Sara's influence from musical theatre in her songwriting!
Even though it's only a lyric video, I'm crying so much because she keeps saying "You can have Manhattan cause I can't have you" and the whole time, she's just waking through NYC alone, and I think she's wondering if Manhattan was worth losing somebody she loved. Also, she says "black and white begin to color in" but the whole video is black and white, so maybe that's her trying to say that she's still really hurt?
I think the video is black and white precisely because the words are sung from the perspective when she has already left, so black and white have already colored in.
SARA BAREILLES IS A SOUL SINGER. There was a song from long ago called "I'll TAKE Manhattan." But in this case Manhattan is being relinquished, along with the person who's staying there. Sara Bareilles was born in 1979, the same year the movie "Manhattan" premiered. It was a black-and-white movie that started with a long montage of the borough. Sara writes songs that would have been standards in a bygone era, and likely will be in the future. She says just enough to allow you to fill in your own details. Her amazing voice writes the songs every bit as much as the lyrics. Her phrasing is impeccable; it gently paints the heartbreak of the words. She truly is a soul singer.

I love this song. She willing gives him the city that she knows to be free. You can tell she's heartbroken, and the agony in her voice tells you that she actually gone through it. My favorite line is "And I know that holding us in place is simply fear of what's already changed." It's undeniably true. It amazes me how she pinpointed the words of that truth.
except it's the other way around... she's singing in the view of her ex. He was the one who left Manhattan and she stayed. which adds a whole lot of dimension to the song.. makes it much more sadder
@@TheicMoggy Exactly. This is her ex's story. But I don't think one perspective is sadder than the other. It's just that she has decided to leave. Not easy for anyone when that happens. That said, since I SO love Sara, I'm glad she's not the one getting her heart broken.
After knowing just the big anthems she's most famous for, I recently discovered the "full Sara." A rare, RARE combination of vocal talent, songwriting and LYRICS -- pure poetry. So beautiful, Sara. TY for bringing us along for the ride. You are a gift.
This is such a well written song. You can really hear the pain of this break up in this song. Hope she eventually finds her true soul mate and writes a great song about being happy.

Beautiful job Sara. This song makes me think of a friend who I have feelings for. We've known each other since high school, and he's a year older than me. He liked my friend (I know, so cliche). I didn't tell him or anyone else that I had feelings for him until a after I realized that I loved him, and was 100% sure that my friend didn't like him back, that way he didn't have to worry about hurting my feelings and my friend didn't have to feel guilty if she didn't like him back. She didn't like him back, so I confessed to him that I did have feelings for him. He didn't return those feelings, which I had expected (though it still hurt a ton). He really was my best friend, and I missed him a lot when he went to college during my senior year of high school. Now, I'm going off to college too (yay). "You can have Manhattan cause I can't have you." I want the best for him, and if that means getting a good education in a university of his choice and be with the best kind of girl, I will give it up. I won't tell him that I have feelings for him anymore so he doesn't feel guilty (though I do tell him that he means a lot to me still). He deserves the best, and I am willing to give up my chance with him because I want him to be happy.

I don't really comment here on youtube videos, but Sara, this goes directly to you. This video took me there for the sole reason that I did go there on my first ever trip to ANYWHERE in the world and it was something that really changed my life. The trip was in 2011 and it really did something to me, but upon returning from my trip, I completely forgot everything. All those experiences vanished until I heard this song. It made me cry and I simply said, "BEAUTIFUL!" Thank You Sara! THANK YOU!
She is so under appreciated. This song is gorgeous and explains heartache so well. I'll never understand why this has a little over a million views but "Big Booty" by JLO has 213 million. Society sucks. Sara, you're such a wonderful musician and artist.
I thought it had a pretty melody the first time I heard it. It’s become more beautiful now that I know what the song’s about. The tempo, the rhythm, the rests and nuances along with her voice play beautifully together to convey the pain of loss. Thank you, Sara. I hope things have gotten better for you.
I'm so late to this, but I wanted to share: The final chorus when the horns come in and she stops singing... I read once that she was actually supposed to repeat the chorus one more time, but she couldn't because she was crying so hard during the recording. She kept playing though, so they left it that way. She is a true artist in every sense of the word.
I've been hopelessly in love with the same guy for almost 15 years ever since we were little. I couldnt imagine loving someone else. I know he'll never feel the same for me. I am helpless. I cannot stop loving him. I can't stop hoping someday he'll realize that I am the one for him.
This is an important song in my life! First off, I love piano-driven jazz pop ballads with clever lyrics, and if Sara's singing it, that's even better! Now, my story: I first heard it when it came out in 2013 and was so taken aback by it, that I actually wished to have gone through something similar LOL! But guess what, 2 years later it happened! In Manhattan!! LOL! The experience CRUSHED me, and this song became the soundtrack for it. In other words, never a song played such an intense role in my life!
Brilliant character development with the entire song leading up to one specific point (at least for me) "I'm just too sad to" she cuts herself off, she can't finish the lyric, musical genius everyone. It is an honor to listen to anything this incredible woman comes up with. An old soul, with pure talent.
What makes it so many times sadder for me is that in her commentary for the song she said that she meant to sing until the end of the song, but she didn't because she was crying and then left it that way.
sometimes we have to be happy the favorite artist didn’t have to earn the reputation like ladyyGaga

you can have manhattan
l know it's for the best
I'll gather up the avenues
And leave them on your doorstep
And I'll tip toe away
So you won't have to say
You heard me leave
you can have manhattan
l know it's what you want
the bustle and the buildings
the weather in the fall
to save you some space
for somebody new
you can have manhattan
cause l can't have you
ahhhhh
you can have manhattan
the one we used to share
the one where we were laughing
and drunk on just being there
hang on to the reverie
could you do that for me?
cause l'm just too sad to
you can have manhattan
cause l can't have you
and so it goes
one foot after the other
til black and white begin to color in
and l know
that holding us in place
is simply fear of what's already changed
ahhhhh
you can have manhattan
l'll settle for the beach
the sunsets facing westward
with sand beneath my feet
and l'll wish this away
just missing the days
when l was one half of two
you can have manhattan
Thanks 💜💜

She is such an amazing song writer, so much feeling in her words and voice
I don't really comment here on youtube videos, but Sara, this goes directly to you.
This video took me there for the sole reason that I did go there on my first ever trip to ANYWHERE in the world and it was something that really changed my life. The trip was in 2011 and it really did something to me, but upon returning from my trip, I completely forgot everything. All those experiences vanished until I heard this song. It made me cry and I simply said, "BEAUTIFUL!"
Thank You Sara! THANK YOU!
Holy. This is a crazy powerful song.
Her voice is the same when live. Such a beautiful song.
This song just broke my heart. You can feel the pain through her lyrics and voice. She is simply amazing.
wow ! it was so beautiful i'm in love with this song and i don't even know how you are !! Congrat
Everything in this, is beauty. Thank you very much for that.
how could someone make such a beautiful song that touches every fabric of the soul......
the most amazing singer of our planet
Aishwary Ao most definitely
She's as good at slow, sad songs as she is at peppy songs!! (almost better)
I can hear the sadness in her voice.beautiful song :'(
She is so under appreciated. This song is gorgeous and explains heartache so well. I'll never understand why this has a little over a million views but "Big Booty" by JLO has 213 million. Society sucks. Sara, you're such a wonderful musician and artist.
2019 and still here! Sara you are an incredible song writer and underrated singer ever!
I thought it had a pretty melody the first time I heard it. It’s become more beautiful now that I know what the song’s about. The tempo, the rhythm, the rests and nuances along with her voice play beautifully together to convey the pain of loss. Thank you, Sara. I hope things have gotten better for you.
J.D. nicely said
Song hits home... that is one reason why I love Sara Bareilles
She is a master!! Love this song.
“You can have Manhattan, cause I can’t have you..”
I just ripped my heart out right now...
This song got me goosebumps. Extremely beautiful.
mind blowing breakup song, this lady's talent knows no limits
Severely underrated talent. She's amazing! One of the few artists where I own all her albums and listen to frequently. It never gets old.
'
Brought me to tears, what an amazing, beautiful artist.
I love this women...I would love to chill with her and write songs all day...
I love the trumpet (It's a trumpet right?) in the background. It adds so much to the song.
Curtis so true and beautifully said
You can actually hear her breaking apart on the last "can't have you" there's so much pain in her voice.
I know that holding us in place is just fear of whats already changed. GOSH how great are those lyrics!!!
that's brilliant
I've been hopelessly in love with the same guy for almost 15 years ever since we were little. I couldnt imagine loving someone else. I know he'll never feel the same for me. I am helpless. I cannot stop loving him. I can't stop hoping someday he'll realize that I am the one for him.
What a beautiful song!
The feels you get when you have to sacrifice for someone you love. Just to make them happy. That's true love
"Whats holding us together is simply fear of whats already changed". damn this woman can write!
Brilliant character development with the entire song leading up to one specific point (at least for me)
"I'm just too sad to" she cuts herself off, she can't finish the lyric, musical genius everyone. It is an honor to listen to anything this incredible woman comes up with.
An old soul, with pure talent.
I'm on my Sara marathon. She just seems to understand me the best 💜
This is so beautifully written, I am being bewitched
her piano music always gets me
Music is feelings. This is MUSIC. Outstanding. Moving. Simply beautiful.
