What makes it so many times sadder for me is that in her commentary for the song she said that she meant to sing until the end of the song, but she didn't because she was crying and then left it that way.

The most emotional line every time for me is "you can have Manhattan, I know it's what you want." It shows a sign of respect and love even though they obviously are no longer together.

I just love how uncharacterized her voice is. She’s not trying to sound like Adele or every other singer nowadays. She’s just singing like herself, and I love that so much. I could pick her out of a hundred voices.

I think its fair to compare Sara Bareilles to Adele, although i do like sara's lyricisim significantly more than Adeles...
This might be because Adele is more mainstream or commercialised, but i think Sara's songs (new and old) are more heartfelt than Adeles, i mean Adele has very emotional songs as well, but it doesnt really ever go further than that, compared to Sara her lyrics are more complex and referential maybe that makes her less pop or something but i really enjoy Sara's influence from musical theatre in her songwriting!

There was a song from long ago called "I'll TAKE Manhattan." But in this case Manhattan is being relinquished, along with the person who's staying there.
Sara Bareilles was born in 1979, the same year the movie "Manhattan" premiered. It was a black-and-white movie that started with a long montage of the borough.
Sara writes songs that would have been standards in a bygone era, and likely will be in the future. She says just enough to allow you to fill in your own details. Her amazing voice writes the songs every bit as much as the lyrics. Her phrasing is impeccable; it gently paints the heartbreak of the words. She truly is a soul singer.

Even though it's only a lyric video, I'm crying so much because she keeps saying "You can have Manhattan cause I can't have you" and the whole time, she's just waking through NYC alone, and I think she's wondering if Manhattan was worth losing somebody she loved.
Also, she says "black and white begin to color in" but the whole video is black and white, so maybe that's her trying to say that she's still really hurt?
I think the video is black and white precisely because the words are sung from the perspective when she has already left, so black and white have already colored in.

WOW!!! this has to be one of most beautifully written song about losing one's love. the emotions& feelings about her loss is so palpable i could feel her sadness & pain. anyone who has been broken up with feels her hurt, it brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful job Sara. This song makes me think of a friend who I have feelings for. We've known each other since high school, and he's a year older than me. He liked my friend (I know, so cliche). I didn't tell him or anyone else that I had feelings for him until a after I realized that I loved him, and was 100% sure that my friend didn't like him back, that way he didn't have to worry about hurting my feelings and my friend didn't have to feel guilty if she didn't like him back. She didn't like him back, so I confessed to him that I did have feelings for him. He didn't return those feelings, which I had expected (though it still hurt a ton). He really was my best friend, and I missed him a lot when he went to college during my senior year of high school. Now, I'm going off to college too (yay). "You can have Manhattan cause I can't have you." I want the best for him, and if that means getting a good education in a university of his choice and be with the best kind of girl, I will give it up. I won't tell him that I have feelings for him anymore so he doesn't feel guilty (though I do tell him that he means a lot to me still). He deserves the best, and I am willing to give up my chance with him because I want him to be happy.

This is such a well written song. You can really hear the pain of this break up in this song. Hope she eventually finds her true soul mate and writes a great song about being happy.
I love this song. She willing gives him the city that she knows to be free. You can tell she's heartbroken, and the agony in her voice tells you that she actually gone through it.
My favorite line is "And I know that holding us in place is simply fear of what's already changed." It's undeniably true. It amazes me how she pinpointed the words of that truth.
except it's the other way around... she's singing in the view of her ex. He was the one who left Manhattan and she stayed. which adds a whole lot of dimension to the song.. makes it much more sadder
@@TheicMoggy Exactly. This is her ex's story. But I don't think one perspective is sadder than the other. It's just that she has decided to leave. Not easy for anyone when that happens. That said, since I SO love Sara, I'm glad she's not the one getting her heart broken.

getting over a failed love is hard.. idk, those good memories seemed so sweet and heart warming when i remember them, when i relived them when i close my eyes. remembering how fragrant her perfume was, how she smiled, how her eyes lit up when she saw me, how she said "i love you", how we spent our time together, the holidays, how she asks for a hug everytime we need to get back home. but the pain is unbearable when i get back to reality, yet i cant stop myself from reminiscing the memories from those days.
she left me for some other guy, classic "i think he's the one" story. as much as i want to be mad at her, to hate her, only tears and sadness shows. in the end i just said that i understand, that it's not her fault, and that i really do hope that she's happy.

i feel sorry for you man. i was in the same boat as you. i couldnt give myself away anymore,trying convincing him that's it's gonna work out,i feel like i was dumped be he said he just wanted different things at that moment. i was confused and mad. all the love said meant nothing,but i have come to realization that maybe we are not meant to be together but they way he broke it off was so cruel. i feel ashamed and broken. it's been a month. i was always reminded of him and i couldnt do it anymore. i lost myself in the process of knowing him. i gave my all. now im left with nothing 💔

as for me, when me and my ex was still together, it felt effortless (or atleast to me it did), conversation just flows, we laugh, we have similiar taste and hobbies, we rarely fought, it all felt like we're on the same side. ofcourse that could be only me who felt that way and i'm too dumb or too in love to realize that.
anyway, it's been 3 years, and i'm getting better. but the pain is still there, the sadness, i feel like i'm a failure, that i was never enough, and never will be, at times i still fell and just cried myself to sleep, at other times it's really tough to get out of bed in the morning. everything i do, my work, my hobbies, it feels like i'm just doing it all to distract myself.
i guess i never really moved on, i just learn to live with the pain and memories
