This song is so underrated.
agreed.
I know, right? A perfect breakup song. Not bitter, or wanting, just, sad.. Its feelings were raw and solid. Like showing how love works, that sometimes, there'll be a point in your life that you love a person but the person simply doesn't love you anymore that the only thing to do is let go.
reminds me of Gravity
+matchbox3eb yes, 2 of my faves... well, i actually like most of her songs... 😅
my comment is overrated
"and i know that holding us in place is simply fear of whats already changed"
I've never heard Sara sing a note off key and her timing is incredible. What an artist. Just so pure. Wish there were more artist like this able to crack through to the mainstream. Talent like this deserves to be heard and it so often doesn't. Hopefully Sara starts a trend. We need more like her.
Preach
There is a hiccup in a note in her cover of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
But she's that good you;ll barely remember it.
@@callMeNorby that hiccup occurs in every performance she did (at least the ones on RUclips) so I think it was intended
Sounds like somebody has never her sing "Make Them Hear You" at Miscast. But if anything it proves that she is mortal and not an impossibly angelic deity
Seriously!! I'm such a tough critict on singers because I sing...and she has perfect pitch ❤️❤️❤️
"...one foot after the other, 'til black and white begin to color in..."
Stunningly accurate description of what it's like to deal with a depressive episode. It's as though all life and color have been drained out of your world. You move forward because you know you have to, but there's no joy in anything. When you're in the thick of it and you can barely remember what it feels like to be happy, it's so difficult to keep moving forward. You can't concentrate on anything beyond the next step... and then the next... and the next.
Thankfully, nothing lasts forever, (even when the minutes feel like hours,) and ever so slowly the color comes back...
When she got to the last verse "You can have Manhattan, I'll settle for the beach" - I got so choked up and this isn't the first time this beautiful song has me in tears... I remember back in 2016 I was in a very bad place mentally and emotionally and I found this song when I was on RUclips listening to all the Sara Bareilles songs one Sunday afternoon and I found this one and I was already in tears during the first verse... Such a powerful song! She is not only an extraordinary singer and multi instrumentalist, she is also one of the best songwriters of our generation! She tells a story and I can picture every lyric that she wrote - she is one of my biggest musical inspirations!
The most powerful line of the song "When I was one half of two". She flipped nailed it.
really awesome...she's just great...
I agree. She's awesome.
Agree!
I LOVE SARA!! but seriously how the hell does she sound better live that on the recorded version!?!? That doesn't happen very often with other singers; then again she isn't some singer she's SARA FREAKING BAREILLES!! I swear I have to go to one of her live concert!! She is the best!
There's actually a series of 'making the record' videos for this album and for this particular song you can see that she was crying while recording it. (Quite understandably as she had just broken up with her boyfriend and this song is written from his perspective). So, that's how it's possible that on this particular song she sounds better live!
Though, I do prefer the live arrangements of this than the studio version....hate the horns.
@@carr0760 I've listened to that recording so many times, enchanted by the little breaks in her voice and "between the lines" heartache... so this makes so much sense. She sure has a way of putting words and music to things the rest of us can't.
I’ve seen Sara twice. Her albums are average compared to her live. Every. Time. So amazing...
the chord voicings are so subtle and so precise, her music theory is just impeccable.
Agreed.
And she said she never took music theory because it was too hard. Haha. It’s all in her heart and soul.
Still one of my favorite songs to date. I personally think this is one of her best works. Let's all remember she wrote the lyrics of this song while placing herself in the shoes of her boyfriend who had to let her go so she can have a career in Manhattan. I guess that's why you feel so much pain in this song.
Ms. Bareilles you're a true artist....I am 61 years old and I am a music teacher and I love all your songs. from one artist to another, you are great .....
She's the total package.
I think this is one of the best compliments an artist could get. And yes, I totally agree she is a true artist.
"You can have Manhattan cause I can't have you ..." What a great, sad and emotional song. It makes me cry ... Sara has such a beautiful and touching voice - incredible! Thank you, Sara, for this wonderful song!
i can imagine how rain drops onto the window of the subway in manhattan in which sara/model of the mv ride. the melody has the feel of tiredness, wanting
you can see the sadness in her eyes, and hear the magic in her voice.
That's because she lived through this story.
This is transcendent. I don't think any artist can sing with this much emotion and sound so beautiful.
I agree but she also just got of a really long term relationship and she wrote this song when she moved to Manhattan so all the emotion was there. It’s really hard to pick an all time favorite song from Sara but this one is up there.
her voice is so high-end, one of the most perfect tone I've ever heard.
I ache up to this moment whenever I hear: "You can have Manhattan 'cause I can't have you." There's a concrete emotion in there that only heart can fathom.
it's 2021 and this is still Sara's best live performance, in my opinion.
2:34-3:05, are you kidding me??
I'm not even sure it's legal for an artist to be this good live. So much love for all her music.
I love Sara and she's finally coming back to play in Sydney. The only problem is none of my friends like her/ know her as well as I do. Hell, if no one else goes, I'll go by myself
You are awesome xP
Be proud and have fun seeing Sara!
Woo!
Just go! She's coming to where I am and I've got a tic to go alone - thank goodness I didn't hesitate cos it's a sold-out show :)
I went by my self to San Diego last August, for the same reason as you, I traveled from Mexico and had a great time :D
Lolly Pereira I hope you went by yourself. If I had this opportunity I wouldn't miss it for anything. I live in Brazil, so... yeah.
Lolly Pereira how was it, did you go?
Such an incredible woman. no one can harnest pain, longing, loneliness and resilience like this woman can. She is such a huge inspiration. Damn gorgeous.
She's the only one worth waiting for. (Video to buffer, I mean)
I'd endure waiting for the whole video to load just to hear the song without interruptions. Totally worth it.
i totally agree with you!
How is she saying everything I wanna say but have no words for? 😭😍
well said...
Artists serve this role for the rest of us.
This, and "Gravity" & masterpieces of "pop" songwriting
PascalsWager5 this is by no means pop music or songwriting
This song breaks my heart in the most beautiful way.
This might be the most perfectly written song. Captures the intended feeling absolutely perfectly. Heartbreaking.
she makes me wanna play the piano again...
The first time I heard this song was live at her concert in 2012 just like this video. She started by saying “this is a song I wrote about a person who we had to end things because of the distance”. I’ve never been so drawn in by a song in my life. I also had just ended a relationship one of us in NY the other one by a beach. I just broke in tears 🥺 in like the best way. I just let all that stuff go that day. One of the best songs I’ve ever heard.
I could listen to her all day long.
Pitch perfect, 100000% emotional. Just an amazing artist! Simple, raw, and beautiful.
I just broke up with someone I've been together with for 7 years. Each and every word of this song describes how I feel at the moment.
Somehow a song about giving up Manhattan is relatable to an Idaho girl who's never been there. And that is Sara's magic.
Crazy that her live performances are literally the exact same as her recordings. Stunning.
Sometimes even better
+gleek18 Yeah. Even better
Tears tears tears
Sara Bareilles is amazing live and has an amazing sense of humor :) I went to her concert recently and it has really made me appreciate her music even more.
I need to see and hear this woman live! She's the fucking best
One of my favorite songs by Bareilles.
Sara is so much more than a singer and song writer. She's also a comedian, a poet, an actor, a writer, a baker...;)
Wow sound quality so much better than live version at radio city. . . . someone's phone. . . llkely. . . this is the sound I was looking for.
Forever a fan of Sara. Forever.
I am addicted to her, her voice and her music. I just can't stop listening. Goosebumps all over every time!!
I'm listening now and they run up and down both arms.
This song gets me so emotional...Sara truly is one of the best artists out there
I see in her, a talent that will surpass timelines. like Elton, Billy, Carole. Even more than them!! Sara i love you.
Talking of Elton, it was great to see them on youtube performing Gravity together with such mutual admiration, after her performance of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road that he loves
I'm not really sure how I missed out on Sara this long but I'm glad I found her! What an amazing voice, what an amazing talent!
This song is perfect for rainy days
It's amazing how you can feel her pain. I believe that's what music is all about: sharing emotions. Sara is great at this.
I haven't heard a better female musician in my lifetime.
i actually had to google the lyrics to this song to make sure she wrote it - true talent!!!!
A true MASTER of her craft, Bareilles is head and shoulders above the rest of the crop of young singer/singwriters. So much heart, so much soul. And oh my GOD.. that VOICE! Just stunning.
I'm not a great fan of contemporary music, but this woman takes my breath away. It really doesn't get better than this!
Contemporary, yes. But the fact that she has written a Tony-nominated Broadway musical truly indicates that her songwriting transcends and is deeper than the contemporary pop genre. She is writing a new American songbook in some respects.
This woman is perfect. Only got love for her. A small note on the lyric "sunsets facing westward" seemingly implies a CA beach, but even Manhattan sunsets are westward. I still swoon for this song every time. It owns me.
At her best just her voice, a piano and a mic. Nothing else required ever. Her backing musicians overpower her voice so much when she's live.
STOP IT !!! Stop making your live performance so good. You know I can't download the live version of your songs. Please stop torturing me
will you ever come here to the Philippines? :'(
I hope she will come 😞
I've been waiting for years now. T_T
+gleek18 huhu me too. shes pregnant as far as i know. hope for a big comeback
John Rey Gelpe ooooh. I'm happy for her. But I hope she'll come here after. I'm such a huge fan.
+gleek18 me too. ups and downs siya kasama ko. hope na makapunta siya sa pinas. huhuhu
This is beyond. It's real and honest. So raw. I can't not explain how much I love this song and this performance. Love you Sara!
Sara B. is my all time favorite singer-song writer! Her music always make me cry. From Gravity to this... Love you, Sara! Thanks for making super good music!
Better than the studio version. You see the emotion. She's amazing.
I was at one of her concerts about a week before this was shot and the crowd was the same there. When she sings this song NOTHING else matters.
One does not simply make a noise whilst Sara Bareilles is playing Manhattan live.
Everything about this is perfect
I always appreicate Sara's music. And the very first time i fell in love with her was 3 yrs ago and it was through this piece of art; Manhattan. I had accidentally come across the music video and it just blew my soul away. And on this video, how smooth she goes with the piano surprised me; the efforts she must have put into for this beautiful performance. Everything's perfect.
What do you want? Voice? Songwriting? Feel? Timing? Playing? Really meaning it/living it? Performance? It’s all right here in the highest class. Top lady
This song never fail to make me feel sentimental.
Beautiful performance. The song in studio already felt imbued with all the feelings the song is talking about, this live version is just amazingly well done, you can also feel everything, every single letter from the lyrics and every single musical note. Can't say anything else except for WOW.
Seeing one of her shows is on my bucket list
Seriously, one of the most beautiful singers of our time.
This is beyond amazing
I can’t listen to this without crying 😭
i'm in love with this girl, i really do.
you're not alone :D
Seeing her perform this adds so much to the song. The joy she radiates during her upbeat numbers is gone - her sadness is so palpable, and touching.
The bridge in this song is magnificent.
My absolute favorite song. And hearing her perform it live is so much better than it is on her album
I remember when I first heard this song, the album had just come out. I cried the first time, and now, 7 years later I still get teary eyed.
And I know
That holding us in place
Is simply fear of what's already changed
glad finding this masterpiece after all
woah the emotions behind this song. sooooo good
Isn't she so perfect?!? 😍😍😍
This is my favorite song from the album!
how can you dislike this? you the man Sara.
amazing mood the song has
Simply beautiful, in all those sad little ways that some of us adore.
HEAVEN IS HERE SARA
this song is so haunting and heartbreaking and she sings it from her soul..one of my favs always
It might have been very hard for her to sing this song in front of an audience without shedding tears! OMG Sara I love you so much thank you for sharing your heart with us! Your music is beautiful!
This is so amazing. It's one of my favorite songs.
One of my favorite live piano videos on this entire site. To have been there live...
this is flipping amazing
If I die I wanna listen to her voice so I could die happy. Even if its a sad song. Hahaha
Love u sara u freakin rock.
Achingly beautiful... this song is the perfect merger of melody and words. Simply stunning.
Her words and the subtleness of her melody gives me absolute calmness and peace of mind...
I always come back to her Blessed Unrest album. Songs for all seasons of my life! ❤ you're amazing Sara!
This is just perfect!
Im crying like a baby. :(
This song deserves to become part of the Great American Songbook.
I like all Sara's songs! Great lyrics, good compositions!
What such a beautiful song, truly moving. This is music
Love this song so much. Its so beautifully written.
This is fantastic. The timing, the tone and voice ...just so perfect. You deserve all the success and respect. I love it.
This song is all heart! It gets to me!
This is so emotional, thank you Sara, your music makes my days and nights better...
Absolutely incredible performance!
Sara, you are absolutely incredible.
