Yes, it is iconic. One of the most beautiful songs ever made. There is a longer version with a poem at the end which meshes so well the rest of the song. Unlike how the bands Marshall Tucker Band or Jethro Tull with Ian Anderson used the flute, this here brings that mellow and haunting contrast that just draws you in. Check out Proco Harum "Whiter Shade of Pale" if you haven't already.
Absolutely the poem for me finishes a masterpiece. Whenever I hear Nights in White Satin without the spoken words it feels unfinished-incomplete

Days of Future passed, it's a theme album, all done with an orchestra, other big hit from the album- Tuesday Afternoon. The whole thing is lovely, actually.
This legendary British rock band was the first to incorporate symphonic music, prog and poetry into psychedelic pop rock in 1967. Their first seven albums were concept albums. Unique and original.
There is a stunning live version that includes the album's outro also. So good.
I grew up listening to this group & they are one of my favorites from the 60's - 80's. They have had so many hit songs. Love their mix of rock with classical music. They have a sound like no other band. The Moody Blues' most successful singles include "Go Now", "Nights In White Satin", "Tuesday Afternoon", "Question", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice", "Your Wildest Dreams", "I'm Just A Singer In A Rock & Roll Band". But all of their music is great.
The Moody Blues were the first group to play with a symphony orchestra. They also introduced real stereo to their music. Before this album "Days of Future Passed" pop bands didn't use stereo to it's full potential but this was an experimental album which became iconic and changed how pop music was recorded. I love the Moodies and have always followed them.

The Moody Blues were a great band and had many high quality songs --- 2 more that are in the same vein as *_Nights in White Satin_* are *_Tuesday Afternoon_* and *_Legend of a Mind_* --- these are just 3 out of many great tunes --- delving further into their catalogue is a rewarding experience.
The mellotron gives the orchestral sounds, plus those backing vocals are great. They're from Birmingham England. Their core 7 albums from Days of Future passed through Seventh Sojourn are all magnificent.
The Days of Future Past was recorded with the London Philharmonic orchestra but they used the mellotron in many songs and used it when I saw them in 1972. Later in the 90s and beyond they would perform with the local city's orchestra. I saw them a few years ago and they used the mellotron.

The Moody Blues have quite a collection of songs. It's a vast rabbit hole!!! Mix of things??? There were a lot of mixes in the 60s and 70s. Walter Murphy - Fifth of Beethoven; Meco - Star Wars theme; Noel Pointer - Night Song.
That one's a long time staple on the local classic rock station. The full version is a bit longer, including a spoken word section.
Another song of theirs you might try is 'Your Wildest Dreams'. It was an early 80's hit for them.

Showing my age. When I was in 2nd year university in a dorm someone on the floor played the Moody Blues every night. I believe it was Tuesday Afternoon. It was a wonderful way to go to sleep.
It is amazing how music will take you back to a moment in your life. I am 65, but in about 1973/74 I had a group of friends that I hung out with. There was a girl in this group I had a crush on. I remember this because several times when the group of friends were hanging out, this song would play. Now everytime I hear this song I am immediately taken back to my parent's basement rec room, where I was crushing on a girl, that I was too shy to ask out - my loss!

The Moody Blues were definitely an iconic, prog rock band combing rock and classical music to start and then rock. They were one of the first bands to use a synthesizer. I attended my very first concert in 1970 when I was 22 years old. The very first group I saw was the Moody Blues. Thanks for the memories. And, yes, I am old! :)
From Days of Future Passed--one of the very first concept albums; it mixes pop and symphonic. The album follows through a day beginning in the morning and ending with Nights In White Satin. Another great song from the album is Forever Afternoon (Tuesday?). Lunch Break: Peak Hour is really good too. Overall just a great album.
Its a ballad, a love song and it hits hard like life.
This is one of most famous songs in rock. You should check out their "Live at Red Rock" concert. Also you should search out the version of this song with the poem at the end.

The hallucinations they were on only served to enhance their music. One uniquely gifted band.
The Moody Blues, along with the Beatles, were originators of classical rock and progressive rock. The 2nd through the 8th Moody Blues albums were all epic, when Mike Pinder the keyboardist, (mellotron) was with them. Mike gave them that lush, cosmic, classical music sound, and after he left, (he also did one song on the 9th album Pendulum, his last. And he was with the band on their first album, more of a rhythm and blues sound, then. So he was actually on albums 1-9), they became more pop- sounding. The band shared song- writing duties, but Justin Hayward did most of the writing, and singing, as well as playing guitar. Check out Ray's, (flute) 'Legend of a Mind'. There are too many great songs to mention! 'Tuesday Afternoon' from the same album as 'Nights in White Satin' is another killer song!
The most interesting music explores the no-man's land between genres. Unique and unforgettable!

NOT a debut album. Their first was another of the British blues sort of effort. This entire album changed everything. Not epic, an earthquake, a tsunami

@tomland9293 maybe I didn't send my reply? I think prog was simply an evolution from electric and psychedelic rock. Blues and country had become stale, so the Moody Blues moved on. You might try Pearls Before Swine if you haven't heard them yet.

Dyring the late 60's and 70's I listened to this group over and over. They had several albums that were real popular eapecially for all us stoners. Millie give them a listen. Great head music.

BUT, those are NOT violins you're hearing, that is a mellotron. The guy playing it, Mike Pinder, worked in the factory where they were made and gave one to The Beatles.

This track was from the concept album ‘Days Of Future Past’ with full Orchestra. It was released in 1967. The Moody Blues had their first hit in 1964and they from the UK. They have had many album releases all of excellent quality. Most of their songs tell a story,
Following Procol Harum use of orchestra in rock Moody Blues became legends by their music style that was psychedelic, blues, classical and rock. Nights in White Satin was one of the few songs that charted twice. 1972 it returned as a big hit.

Initially released in 1967, it did ok but was ahead of it's time. When re released in the early 1970's it became a huge hit, along with the concept album (perhaps the first ever) "Days of Future Passed". Rolling Stone Magazine eventually named it the essential album of 1967. They were recognized as the creators of Symphonic Rock, Art Rock and were essential in the development of Prog Rock. They were friends with the Beatles and introduced them to the Mellotron which was used in the Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band album.
The orchestral backing was provided by the London Festival Orchestra, conducted and arranged by Peter Knight.

If you want to hear more of Justin Hayward's gorgeous voice, try "Forever Autumn" from Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds. It was the single-release from a concept double album, all of which is just wonderful. For an even more poignant version of it, go looking for Justin playing it solo acoustic for a New York radio station: before he starts, the DJ explains that it was the first song they played after 9/11 when they could finally get back to music after days of 24/7 public service information.
The whole album is brilliant. IMHO. 1977 Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds.
My favorite Moody Blues songs from their earlier days is, "The Story In Your Eyes". I also like "Isn't Life Strange" and "Tuesday Afternoon". From the 80s, it's "The Voice" and "Your Wildest Dreams".

A lot of the bands coming out of England in the 60's-70's were well schooled in classical music and it showed in the music they recorded .
"The Moody Blues were formed in Birmingham, England, in 1964, initially consisting of keyboardist Mike Pinder, multi-instrumentalist Ray Thomas, guitarist Denny Laine, drummer Graeme Edge, and bassist Clint Warwick. The group came to prominence playing rhythm and blues music." Their band was considered classical for a minute, but then they proved otherwise.
The MB are a group you need to put on the headphones, start the album and enjoy the trip.

Like Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon", this song was taken from a thematic album. The album was "Days of Future Passed" and the songs took you through a day. You may not want to do them on your channel, but as a musician, you owe it to yourself to listen to these albums (and several others) all the way through.

Another non-standard, never matched album of that sublime period...Astral Weeks by Van Morrison. Nothing like it was accomplished again. The flavors served up, to us, are rich and unique.

YES! Beautiful! Haunting!! ICONIC!!! It is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard and one of my Top-10 Favorites of All-Time.... it is that good to me!!! They are a British band. The song was originally released in 1967 but didn't chart very well in America. Re-released in 1972 here, it was much more successful. Justin Hayward... one of the best songwriters of all-time and absolute shame they are not in the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. Brilliance! Cheers!!

Well recognised! Even in the era of "classical music" composers took each other's melodies and created "variations" of them, sampling if you will. The obvious break from this was Elgar's Enigma Variations - which were not based on original tunes, but written by Elgar from scratch, hence Enigma. The MBs were years ahead of their time and stand listening to today at length.

Some bands have a masterpiece song. For me, this is The Moody Blues masterpiece song. The Moody Blues were an English rock band formed in Birmingham in May 1964.

I agree with the comment below - procul harum whiter shade of pale is a must but also try julie driscoll and the trinity- this wheels on fire and Marianne Faithful - Ruby Tuesday or its the evening of the day . lets hear it for the women as well .

The Moody's album "Days of Future Past" is an epic theme album, all based on times of the day, e.g., morning, noon, afternoon, evening, and...........Nights in White Satin. Brilliant album.

Thanks for a great reaction to the iconic "Nights in White Satin." The Moody Blues wrote some of the greatest melodies of the classic rock era. This was the single version of Nights in White Satin, if you have the chance to listen to the 7:44 album version from "Days of Future Passed," it has a full orchestra and is an amazing finale to the album. We had 2 great songs at around the same time....Knights In White Satin and A Whiter Shade Of Pale by Procol Harum....both similar but both totally different from the other music at the time...

One of the first tunes I heard that turned me from Pop to Prog at 12.
this was taken from the album "days of future passed" all of which was accpmpanied by the "the London Festival Orchestra." side one ain't so hot but side two is a veritable masterpiece.
they were what was known as an "album band." meaning it wasn't their singles that drew their fans but overall album concepts. some of their albums are hit and miss but they began almost every album with a poem that morphed into a rocker song. you gotta hear "progression/story in your eyes" or "departure/ride my see saw" or "in the beginning/lovely to see you."
in my opinion their albums "a question of balance" and "your children's children's children" are their two best overall albums.
This is the Moody Blues (one of my all time favorite bands) at their best. If you like this, check out “Isn’t Life Strange”.
