Evan Koch with our current understanding of how mind bogglingly huge the observable universe is, it is indeed a terrifying thought to think life would be some sort of freak accident of nature that hasn’t happened to any other planet. I feel like a lot of people alive today already accept the idea of extraterrestrial life as logically sound, to some degree. I wonder if people would really freak out, or just shrug and say they knew all along

Pretty much. Nobody cares, especially if it doesn't affect their daily lives. I mean, we have UFO footage from the US Navy, which they confirmed to be legitimate, and... nobody cares. Most people don't even know that the Navy actually confirmed the authenticity of a UFO tape.
What blows my mind is the fact that without us, the earth and all of its diverse species will 100% die off. In a way, we are earths crowning achievement. We are the only species capable of technology and space travel. We are the only ones capable of saving earth and its biosphere from certain doom at the hands of the sun in 500mil years. We can collect the DNA of all other species and reproduce them on a different planet, we can theoretically move the planet away from the expanding sun into a new goldilocks zone, we can escape destruction and spread Earths biosphere and seed life around the universe. Earth created life, but without us its hard work will just die in half a billion years. We humans are its last attempt at survival. It risked a lot with our existence, it is gambling its own survival on us, in the hope that we can one day save it and its other "children"!
Yes, Earth is wonderful but I can't help but feel sad that it's the only really habitable planet we have in the solar system. Imagine if Venus and Mars tried harder at school - we would have 3 different planets filled with interesting plants and animals to discover and explore.

Not knowing this book, I wonder how much interstellar space would you have to travel through to gather enough material equivalent to uranus and neptune?

I always asked myself the following hypothetical question and my answer has kinda changed over my lifetime, I was wondering if a being offered me answers to all my questions about origin of everything and the universe/multiverse itself in exchange for my life ending right after I heard the answer if I would go for it or not loll
Personally I believe it would be very beneficial for our species even to discover alien life, let alone intelligence. A forced change in perception that the world likely needs to counter people's short-sightedness & regressive tendencies which cause so many issues. That's not to say it wouldn't face resistance, but the world needs to adapt long term or ignorance and aggression will win out. Focus on our future as opposed to obsession with our past. Just my two cents.

I wonder what the effects of concentrating the mass of Pluto, Neptune and Uranus into a vessel with it's own planet sized mass would have on the orbit of the rest of the planets of our solar system? Is this something that's addressed in the book or are the planets "on rails", unaffected by this shifting mass?
I just wrote the exact same question. I imagine our orbit would slowly drift inward ...which would likely be well outside of our habitable zone. Game over at that point. I need confirmation though.
We know about the turbulence generated at the point when a jet takes off from the runway. And we know about a ship plowing through water versus a hovercraft. So given that a giant hunk of space ship traveling at x speed could affect some planets depending on where they are in relation to the object. Some moons could experience a change. We could see a definite change in some areas where the asteroid belts are. If wake turbulence is what we use in water and air, is the phrase for space called gravitational distortions?
Ah, yes. I look forward to the day we discover the proof of extraterrestrial life in the form of a space hulk floating into our solar system like Oumuamua on steroids.
But only if their shields are down, the ship doesn't have the shape of a cube, the "species" is not called "Berserker" and their first contact message to us is not "Die alien scum".
Missed opportunity with respect to first contact with the Spaniards. Discussion started going into the geopolitical impact but got cut short , but essentially, when first contact was made, the Aztec empire dominated the region. The reactions of the smaller states was to ally themselves with the Spaniards and successfully overthrew the aztec hegemony. That sort of self interested machiavellian reaction would be interesting to explore in a sci-fi book
I did have the rough idea written down for a first contact where the Un team is mudured in an Islamic suicide bombing leaving a small group of British scientists and military personnel to handle first contract Thankfully the aliens are part of an interstellar commonwealth sothe UK ends up being placed in charge of earth on behalf of the galaxy commonwealth

If 3 planets got blown up, even farther away ones, wouldn't that change the orbit of everything else in the solar system, including Earth? I don't see how it wouldn't. Please explain
Yes it would. But not terribly significantly earths orbit is mostly dictated by the sun. It would be something interesting to model the weather pattern differences without the outer planets tug on earth
Not to mention the countless asteroids that would rain down upon us if the gas giants were destroyed as they wouldn’t be there to protect us and hoover them up.
Imagine what if there was a galactic empire or even a universal government which we don't know of yet because we're not deemed worthy by such advanced beings. But once we reach a certain point we would be invited by them to join their galactic federation but must also follow a set of rules, like not to disturb other primitive civilizations and counteracting against bigger threats in the universe and so on.
Favorite fermi paradox explanation: Exploring the universe is overrated. The real mindfuck, and a rabbit hole that intelligent species get lost in, is creating artificial realities.
Why artificial? The reality we are in now might have been created this way, yet we refer to it as natural. The aliens could literally be creating other more pleasing realities that form part of nature as seen from a multiverse angle. Other realities that we might even be able to access and explore some day, imagine that. Assuming we don't poison or blow ourselves up first.
TheSwordOfRa theyre still artificial. There is a difference between speculating about our reality and a reality thats knowingly created for the specific purpose of enjoyment.

@@llanorick - No I don't automatically think that. I'm not 7. I think maybe it's a FRB that possibly is orbiting something else which blocks its signal completely at certain times. I don't think its aliens until I see it for sure. I think we might be alone out here at this point in time. There may of been beings before us, and there will probably be beings after us, but for now, it's just us.
What makes it so frightening is what we do not know. Would the alien species be malevolent or not? Would they even want to communicate with us? They may just want to be left alone. Would they perceive US as a threat? So many different scenarios that it's hard to fathom what might happen or how we would react.
Ok, I disagree with that old point that says: 'any sufficient advanced technology will appear to be as magic....' It can be possible that humans in age of hunter and gatherer would see an iPhone as magic, but I strongly disagree that Incas saw Spaniards as magic people. Sure, Aztecs at first saw them as gods, but it was briefly. Heck, I'm pretty convinced that even dogs knows that people going inside a car are not being eaten by them... So, just to continue my point, today we have a pretty good understanding of the universe, we don't even know if there is a limit to technology, but even if there isn't, I'm sure that we would recognise future technology civilization not as magic ones and even would have a pretty good guess on how that 'blue flying 1cm ball' can record and play images....
Luiz Rafael - Star Trek style transporters, food replicators & FTL travel & subspace communications would look like magic to many who saw them in action.
I expect any aliens who might venture near; would be at the very least; polite and respectful of our civilization; precisely because they are not dummies.
Smart and highly socially advanced people can still be very evil. The smart aliens might politely and very efficiently fuck our civilization out of existence. You know, because they have seen what happens on planets like ours before, we do not seem to care about our only viable biosphere, why should they?
TheSwordOfRa well said. There is no reason to believe they would have empathy or put any value on life (human chemical emotions) other than themselves. They may destroy us Immediately to prevent future Threats or competition for resources. People that want aliens to be real must be optimistic because Its the equivalent of wishing for a monster under your bed without the slightest bit of evidence that it won’t instantly devour you.
That's mentioned you also have to keep in mind that there are things in biology that tells is otherwise that we most likely will not encounter a bean that is similar to us in every way shape or form they themselves might interpret our chemical interactions within our own bodies as hostile for all we know we don't know how other beings are other civilizations out there

As always, your channel delivers! Why settle for less than hard sci fi? Regarding Trevor Williams's interview, I also generally side with a variant of the Zoo Hypothesis, in answer to the FP. However, I think it also works in both directions--recall your recent interview with Prof. Jason Wright on the difficulties of finding technosignatures past and present (whether terrestrial, or of ETI origin). In short, the methodological issues are perplexing and formidable. E.g., consider a scenario involving an advanced ETI on a KS (Kardashev Scale) level 2.0 or higher. (Recall Dr. David Kipping's Bayesian analysis of civilization lifetimes, as a refinement of the Drake Equation, recently posted in his Cool Worlds channel, in which he deduces that the odds are that detectable ETI civilizations are far more advanced than ours). We're talking about a civilization which (ceteris paribus) is at least several millennia ahead of our current stage (KS estimates--keep in mind that the scale is logarithmic--place 21st cent. humanity ~ 0.3-0.7). Aside from mega structures like Dyson Spheres, etc., they've long ago transcended their own biology and chances are have been able to manipulate space-time-matter -energy down to the quantum topological level. To us Earthlings such a civilization may be hiding in plain sight, insofar as I would venture to bet that a colony of amoebas lack the cognitive architecture to even detect a human presence examining them in a petri dish, let alone interacting with them. Of course by the time you get to KS3 levels and higher you're talking about engineering capacities that not only involve galactic but also potentially super cluster scales. (Makes you wonder about the Bootes Void, doesn't it?) But to dial it back down to KS1 civilizations, EVEN THEN the challenges of establishing some kind of a communication line with them would be daunting, even if they sincerely wanted to communicate with us. (To use an analogy: macrobiologists are only scratching the surface in terms of accessing, let alone meaningfully interacting with, the rich and complex consciousnesses of our kindred mammalian species whether they are elephants, dolphins, crows, canines, etc.)
A sufficiently advanced species would also be far ahead of us in communication skills. I am leary of comparisons of humans as amoebas or ants relative to super advanced intelligences.
First Contact was very very bad for the Aztecs and Inca's, and that is just two different "Human cultures " meeting up. I suspect first contact would not be a good thing for us. Would be interesting though.
Clifford Jensen I think the best thing is for us to keep it off of earth and instead we go up to a space station and all humans are quarantined who go up and speak to them, or we keep it just as they come quite close and then we communicate with radios unless they come and try to destroy earth or something
Are we going to address how impossible it would be to destroy Pluto Uranus and Neptune? I mean Pluto and other plutinos are in a 2:3 resonance with Neptune which prevents them from ever being closer than 1/4 the circumference of Neptune's orbit around the Sun, so by the time that it could destroy both it would have already destroyed all of the other planets... or left the inner solar system. I don't get how someone can do a hard sci-fi novel and miss such an important detail. >_< Plus the amount of energy it would take to destroy an ice giant planet (As Uranus and Neptune are ice giants not gas giants) even for a technologically advanced civilization is absurd, as in an astrophysical or stellar energy levels or more like Nicoll Dyson beam or something powered by a natural or Kugelblitz black hole, Neutron Star or White Dwarf. Otherwise it would take thousands or more years to dismantle a planet like Neptune as it is F***ing huge. Regarding the arrival of the Spanish another often missed impact was the climate as the medieval warm period resulted in severe mega-droughts across North America. Prolonged droughts seem to have played a role in the situation. Fermi paradox wise I suspect no one intelligent is nearby and it may be for good reason. We now know our evolution has been greatly influences by proximity to the local spiral arm and the so called Radcliffe wave which has been driving high mass star formation and nearby supernovae including a least one within a few hundred light years 2.6 Ma. On Earth it seems to have driven climatic changes that ultimately may have set the fire based ecology needed to put us on a trajectory towards technology but beyond the safety of our protective atmosphere it may have purged up and rising civilizations. We have't even left the hot ionized gas that radiates in the X ray part of the spectrum. On a related horrifying note since the strongest Magnetar starquakes/glitches from the opposite side of the galaxy ave a similar effect on Earth's environment compared to weather from the Sun. The most powerful eruption event known in our galaxy came from the Magnetar SGR 1806-20, 50,000 light years away arrived on December 27, 2004 had enough energy to ionize the Earths upper atmosphere and compress our magnetosphere. What effect would a Magnetar in our side of the galaxy have on Earth? Or worse in the solar system beyond Earth's magnetosphere and atmosphere? A horrifying scenario I have been thinking about ever since I read about Betelgeuse having abnormally strong magnetic fields for a red Supergiant which some scientists speculate could be the result of a stellar Merger, and some other research last year has suggested stellar mergers might be what is needed to make a Magnetar. So what if Betelgeuse becomes a Magnetar? Such a glitch/starquake from a newborn Magnetar 640 light years away would be absolutely horrifying perhaps eliminating anyone that has left the safety of a planet. I can't even be sure any life could survive so close at the very least you would be talking mass extinction level outbursts....
This is the big problem I have with sci-fi. On one hand it instills wonder and serves as inspiration for would-be scientists. On the other hand there are so many sci-fi plot devices that become more silly the more an individual (or humanity as a whole) learns.
When you consider the technology in a discarded battery, spent nuclear fuel rod, or just an old 8 track tape, even alien 'trash' would be extremely valuable and sought after by different gubmints.
@@zapfanzapfan What if they dont care who the dominant species is and have different criteria for what intelligent life they want to or can even communicate with? Maybe they see their long lost relatives in another species and decide to talk to them. Maybe on their planets homonid type animals died off and another pararralel species evolved into space traveling creatures and seeing us is like us watching planet of the apes. And theyd be biased to help out another species. Its all possible but in the end i think it'll be stranger than the fiction we can come up with.
I think one of the more interesting reactions will be that of religious people. How will they react when they find out that we aren’t god’s chosen people? Not to mention that these visitors will have no concept of this god that so many humans worship.
Apparently, earlier notions of ETs were that they were "other humans" and YHVH would have had similar schemes set up to them, so I guess a return to that kind of view is not implausible. Not to mention that they may be demons. I once recall someone citing some bible passage that was funnily along the lines of the "fools who want to hear messages from the stars." Not that literally "anti-SETI," but definitely something easy to interpret like that. But also against astronomy in general, the context was some kind of "sound of stars" type of headline, it had nothing to do with alien life.
Petitio Principii I’m sure lots of excuses will be made. But if and when we do encounter aliens, much of the literal reading of the Bible and other holy books will be made even more irrelevant than they already are.
Any alien that can cross the space between stars should have translation software. They'd know pretty much everything about us. They'd appear in such a way as to engender trust, as that is the most useful to them. They won't be stupid. There is more to be gained from mutual trade, even if all we have to offer is art, music and tourism.
Love your channel but surprised the 1938 radio play of HG Wells' War of the Worlds wasn't mentioned. That was a good indication of public reaction to news of the first contact, even if mistaken.

To the first question.. I think it would sit me down . It would be awe inspiring. I’m sure I would take the day off and watch the news and party with friends. I would surely hope that it would somehow improve our society.
As is evidenced by all of the alien landing pads, space junk, their radar signal cruising thru our solar system, the alien corpse that was inadvertently left behind. Oh wait, we have none of those things do we? With the vast number of stars in the universe it seems perfectly reasonable to believe there is other life out there. But there is zero evidence to show that any of that life has ever visited earth.

Pretty much. Nobody cares, especially if it doesn't affect their daily lives. I mean, we have UFO footage from the US Navy, which they confirmed to be legitimate, and... nobody cares. Most people don't even know that the Navy actually confirmed the authenticity of a UFO tape.
Earth is so incredibly beautiful. How lucky we are to have this haven. 💗 🌍

Let me know once you’ve done some ‘basic’ research. Research on cases with credible evidence which SETI refuse to consider, but would rather wait on ‘radio contact’ to prove ET existence
just wait until you have your first sighting.
Other than the end result being our demise, of course. Lol, just saying.

Missed opportunity with respect to first contact with the Spaniards. Discussion started going into the geopolitical impact but got cut short , but essentially, when first contact was made, the Aztec empire dominated the region. The reactions of the smaller states was to ally themselves with the Spaniards and successfully overthrew the aztec hegemony. That sort of self interested machiavellian reaction would be interesting to explore in a sci-fi book
Would you watch an episode with JMG and a knowledgeable guest discussing this?
I did have the rough idea written down for a first contact where the Un team is mudured in an Islamic suicide bombing leaving a small group of British scientists and military personnel to handle first contract

Great interview. The Dooms Day Machine is one if my favorite Star Trek Episodes. I really enjoyed hearing this interview. Thanks!
We missed our chance. peak human was probably 1995-2001. Its been a clown world since. Its going to get much worse.

What makes it so frightening is what we do not know. Would the alien species be malevolent or not? Would they even want to communicate with us? They may just want to be left alone. Would they perceive US as a threat? So many different scenarios that it's hard to fathom what might happen or how we would react.
We would be at their mercy. There is no sense in understanding their motive just hope they don't wanna kill us
Ok, I disagree with that old point that says: 'any sufficient advanced technology will appear to be as magic....'
It can be possible that humans in age of hunter and gatherer would see an iPhone as magic, but I strongly disagree that Incas saw Spaniards as magic people.
@@TraditionalAnglican the mere fact that you know already how to call those things say to me that no, it wouldn't look like magic.

@@EventHorizonShow Oh my god a reply from the man himself! I feel like such a fool it was there all along. Sorry 😯 Your videos are amazing! Major fanboy moment.
(Makes you wonder about the Bootes Void, doesn't it?)
But to dial it back down to KS1 civilizations, EVEN THEN the challenges of establishing some kind of a communication line with them would be daunting, even if they sincerely wanted to communicate with us.
I bet the research data that Trevor gathered on psychology of first contact would make an exceptional non-fiction book!
MUSIC SWELLS Wakes Up the Whole House -- I love your channel, but when you do those swells in the beginning, it gets LOUD!

Plus the amount of energy it would take to destroy an ice giant planet (As Uranus and Neptune are ice giants not gas giants) even for a technologically advanced civilization is absurd, as in an astrophysical or stellar energy levels or more like Nicoll Dyson beam or something powered by a natural or Kugelblitz black hole, Neutron Star or White Dwarf.
Uh oh, the possums already made contact without us. Now the aliens think *they're* the masters of the planet.
I think the aliens would assume that dogs are in charge since we pick up their poop... :-)
I borrowed that joke from Jerry Seinfeld.
