    Great movie but It’s crazy how much they changed. Dahlia was actually the cult leader in the game. They impregnated Alessa with their god and burned her in order to complete their ritual of birthing god. Ultimately they fail as the town projects alessas subconscious nightmares into reality splitting her soul. Also silent hill isn’t abandoned like the movie makes you think. In the real world silent hill is a normal town with a mysterious supernatural power that takes people in. Alessas nightmare gives rise to the other world (or darkness as the movie calls it).This was only a fraction of what they changed😭.

      @@PolterGibbst If I'm frank, it doesn't stay to the word of the story, but I feel it stays to the spirit of it. This is one of the few video game adaptions that felt, to me, that it got its source material even if it just took concepts and ran with a new story using them. Considering the amount of complexities that the game had, I think I'd prefer this over them attempting and failing to more directly adapt it. They tried to go back on track for the second movie (adapting the third game which was a direct sequel to the story of the first) and it was, imo, a disaster for it.

    Silent Hill is the domain of an elder god. It calls to people to face the burdens of their soul or die trying. For the mother it was the fear of losing her daughter. For the cop it was being unable to rescue the child. The cop failed. Pyramidhead is from the second game. It is the manifestation of the protagonists desire to be punished for what he did. Because of this, Silent Hill has no control of pyramidhead.

    52:00 Pyramid Head is usually an unexplained entity whose goals are never explicitly stated. The common understanding of Pyramid Head is that he represents guilt and a desire to punish oneself. Typically, he also acts as a guide, not always forcing you to go where you want to go, but where you need to go. A real, face your truth or my blade kinda thing.
    In the movie I'm not exactly sure why he was there, but it could be said he may represent the guilt of the town members who might be grappling with the idea that they burned a child for their salvation.

      He was in the movie because he's Pyramid Head.
      You can def find ways to justify it explain it in-universe, but at the end of the day he really didn't belong in this movie. They weren't about to make a SH movie without the most recognizable (and marketable) character, they were gonna shove him in one way or another (pun intended)

      Not quiet right.
      Masahiro Ito created Pyramid Head explicitly for Silent Hill 2 to represent James guilt and desire to punish himself.
      Every other appearance of Pyramid Head is wrong lore that Konami introduced after there was no Team Silent anymore and was simply added to have the cool looking Pyramid thing make a cameo to increase sales.

    • @axellis8333
      @axellis8333 9 месяцев назад +3

      @@Bambuzzsprosse absolutely, but the Silent Hill canon no longer only exists inside Silent Hill 2.
      The character has since abstracted and become more than just a literary tool for James' story.
      The common theme for phead across all his appearances is a need to punish oneself for acts they still hold guilt for.

    • @Bambuzzsprosse
      @Bambuzzsprosse 9 месяцев назад +6

      @@axellis8333 Bend it like you want. It contradicts the lore Silent Hill 1-3 established flawelessly.
      Even IF someone else would have a desire for punishment, the punisher would not take the form of Pyramid Head because he's a projection of the mental self of James and every other's projection would look differently, according to their mental self.

    While this movie is enjoyable, it gets things wrong. This is an adaptation of the first game which opens with Harry Mason, the MC of the game and his daughter Cheryl. Harry ends up running off the road and fall unconscious and when he comes too Cheryl is missing and the rest of the game is him trying to get his daughter back (the movie follows this plot OK). No issue with it being the mother (who was dead in the game) and not the father, but how they actually get there is forced with the modern setting. One thing that the movie does that pisses me off is change how Silent Hill actually works. Silent Hill in the game is a resort town surrounding a lake and a thick fog comes off of said lake, not a coal fire also Silent Hill isn't an abandoned town it has 3 level (I don't know the proper names so i'm just gonna put what I call them)top layer is normal reality where Silent Hill is just a quiet unassuming resort town 1 layer down you get fog world that's where the monsters come out and whole sections of ground is missing and the third and maybe final layer is rust world where everything is made out of rusted metal. Sorry this was so long.

      @@miffedcuttlefish6139A key issue is that people who haven't done some kind of media studies struggle to realise just how different games and movies are, and how difficult it is to transfer between them well.
      For me, it's not about plot (although that's part of the problem - a bog standard 40hr game plot would need a TV show, even 1.5hr Portal would need a longer movie), but also the feel.
      The feel of directing the action of the game: even different to a book where the plot is laid out and you can open the last page. A game stops when you stop, and you can't open to the last 'page'. We have to choose to keep going, even if the plot is completely linear. It makes it more immediate, more connected to us, the player. We aren't a viewer, we aren't a reader: we *are* the character and *I* move through the plot, even if I have a different name and face for a while.
      A movie cannot replicate that. And to me, that's why video game movies always have that something that's just missing, even if otherwise perfect.

The film is directly inspired by the game franchise (mainly game 1 & 2) and those games (in their graphic design) have deep root inspirations in horror artists like Francis Bacon. You could say the original material was literally inspired by paintings (part of it, at least).

    If I remember correctly, Alessa was burned but didn't die. The girl that Rose absorbed was a demon that came to Alessa who was in constant pain and torment and gave her vengeance over Silent Hill. Every nightmare thing that Alessa thought of became reality. Sharon was all the good that was left in Alessa removed and given form. Pyramid head was one of the things that Alessa created. Hope this helps with some of your questions. I loved the games up until The Room and enjoyed both movies. Have a good one and God bless. 🙂

      just from the movie content (as I know it differs from the games), some of my understanding:
      -----------
      yes, despite her severely burnt body (from the cult burning her alive) (as punishment for the towns' and its cults' evil, the alter/table that Alessa Gillespie was being burned alive on, was knocked over, and its fires would burn not just the building, but the entire town), Alessa Gillespie didn't die, being rescued by the guy-cop with the gloves over his burnt hands (who Rose's husband interacted with), and taken care of as best as could be, by the hospital's nurses...
      ---------
      in her abysmal state, Alessa Gillespie had nothing but hatred and contempt...
      "enters" the Devil itself (not merely a demon) (there's lots of demons, the cult actually worships one, which you learn about in the sequel movie, but this is the Devil itself), offering its "contract" to Alessa Gillespie, which she so eagerly accepts...
      the Devil gives Alessa some of its power, for her to get her revenge on the town and the cult, in exchange for her soul (revenge/vengeance for Alessa's soul), by merging a part of itself with hateful burnt Alessa, creating "Dark Alessa", but for the Devil to merge a part of itself with Alessa, all of the good, innocence, purity, and etc that was still within Alessa, deep inside of her, had to get out of her, as such "light and goodness" couldn't be sharing the same space with the "darkness and evil" of the Devil itself... which created "Light Alessa", a baby whom would get adopted by Rose and her husband (whatever his name, lol), whom they would name "Sharon"
      this is how/why "Sharon" had her dreams/visions and etc, how the Devil could "talk" and interact with her, as part of the Devil was merged with Alessa, creating "Dark Alessa", one half of Alessa, and the other half of Alessa, is "Sharon", the "Light Alessa"
      once/after the hateful burnt Alessa Gillespie "signed" the Devil's "contract", all of the "sinners" just disappeared as mentioned by that guy-cop with the gloves covering his burnt hands, as they were transported to Purgatory/Limbo (the "fog world"), with Dark Alessa creating a fake silent hill there, so the "sinners" would still think they're alive within their silent hill town in the real world... as she gets her revenge on them, having them suffer for eternity...
      except, she couldn't get her revenge upon those within the church, as it was holy grounds, even being within Purgatory/Limbo (the "fog world"), and being (or despite being) the Devil itself, it must honor its contracts, and so, the Devil had to find a way to get to those "sinners" hiding within the church...
      the Devil's plan involved Rose... not only getting the revenge for Alessa, but also in going after, Light Alessa ("Sharon") too, what luck for the Devil... getting to "kill two birds with one stone"... but what is the Devil's interest with "Sharon" (Light Alessa).... hmm.... what happens at near the end of the movie, "Sharon" (Light Alessa) opens her eyes... looking at the Devil, and it smiles back at her...
      and there's a lot more to explain, but not going to get into it... too much work...
      -----------------
      pyramid head, was assigned by the Devil, as/to-be the protector of Dark Alessa, which thus extended to those Dark Alessa cared about and wanted to protect, like her mother, Dahlia Gillespie, and Rose too, as Rose was trying to help Dark Alessa and cared about Dark Alessa, as well as also, the Devil needing Rose as well, in order to honor it's "contract" with Alessa, to get revenge, on the last of the "sinners" hiding in the church... and so, protecting Rose with in both Dark Alessa's and the Devil's interests, and so Pyramid Head protected Rose too

      The director confirmed that "Dark Alessa" is Alessa's evil given physical form. She's Alessa _inner demon._ The script had her explicitly state that she is Alessa.
      "And who are you?"
      "Alessa."
      My personal theory is that Dark Alessa is _also_ the spirit of Silent Hill itself. In the games, the Order (the game cult is almost nothing like the one in the movie) worships a being they call God. "God" is likely spirit of the town. That said, she/it may be the Devil.
      Heather: "'God?' Are you sure you don't mean 'Devil?'"
      Vincent: "Whichever you like."

    As of June 2023, the movie is still filming with no known release date. However, if Gans still sticks by his earlier statement, audiences can expect to see Return to Silent Hill at the end of 2023. If not, the movie will likely hit theaters in early to mid-2024.

    I never played the games which is probably why I love this movie so much. Jodelle Ferland (Sharon/Alessa) gives a fantastic performance as the Darkness and the music hits the perfect balance between tragic and creepily anxious.
    The second one is... not great. While I like that the sequel has a bit more hope to it, most of the story feels very contrived and the visual style doesn't hold a candle to this movie.

  • @JSTKSK
    @JSTKSK Месяц назад +1

    Ok. You asked for answers and I have them, if you have the time to read all of this.
    Long story short(ish): The town is sentient, there are eldritch gods, the town punishes people, everyone experiences the town differently from everyone else, you do not have to die to enter Silent Hill, there is a cult dedicated to an eldritch god, and the cult burned a little girl. In the game, the little girl was intended to be the reincarnation of an eldritch god, but they kind of abandoned that for the movie. The tormented little girl's soul split into two beings and one half was adopted by random kind people. Their daughter and the burned girl are only kind of the same person. More, they are two different "aspects" of the same person. The dark half of the soul that was left in Silent Hill is using the power of the town to punish the people who wronged her. In the movie she apparently did this with the help of a malevolent being that is heavily implied to be the devil ("I go by many names" is a reference to the devil also being called Satan, Lucifer, Old Scratch...ect), and imply that Silent Hill is "hell". In my (and many other people's) opinion this was a stupid choice that directly conflicts with the overarching story of the series. While I am not personally a christian, and have my own beefs with both the theology itself and the dogmatic approach many christian sects apply to their faith; the story was never intended to be a commentary on real-world religious beliefs one way or the other.
    The reason the mother had to reach into the corpse's mouth is because you have to play along with the town's "game" in order to progress, and it is trying to show her the truth of what happened. As a side note, you play as the father in the game and not the mother. That doesn't really add or subtract anything from the story, however, as either one is a desperate parent trying to get their child back and the story isn't really about them. As you noted, the reason the bugs attacked the reanimated janitor and not the mom is because he was the one being punished, not her.
    Pyramid Head is the monster with the giant blade and shouldn't have been in this movie at all. He is from the second game and serves as a distorted "reflection" of a completely different guy who isn't even in this movie. His "reflection" follows him around and serves the purpose of punishing him for the guilt he feels for something he did... I won't spoil it here. Pyramid Head was just added to the movie because he is a fan favorite monster, but they kind of ruined his whole jam by shoehorning him into this story.
    They misquote the bible because, as I said before, the real world religious parts of this movie are shoehorned in and not actually relevant to the story. If anything the fact that they were not only shoehorned in, but done so in such a half ass manner, demonstrates even more that it was a huge mistake to do this at all.
    The reason she leaves the flashlight on for a second staring at the "nurses" is because she needs to memorize where they are standing so she can navigate past them when she turns the light off. It is a nice little touch added by the movie, that doesn't exist in the video games. One thing to note is that the nurses portrayed here are actually the ones from the second game. The ones from the first game were not as suggestively dressed, and that is actually for plot reasons. The nurses here are supposed to represent the nurses that operated on the girl, while the suggestively dressed nurses are supposed to represent the repressed sexuality that the character from the second game felt while ogling the nurses that were taking care of his dying wife. I assume the movie director chose the suggestive nurses, even when it doesn't make any sense from a story perspective, because Hollywood can't let little things like excellent visual story telling get in the way of sexism and fan service.
    The reason the town only appears to the dead in the movie is because the director misapplied one of the multiple endings to the game. In one of the "bad" endings, it turns out all of Silent Hill is just the hallucinations and dying flashes of the protagonist as they died in a car accident. That is not the cannon ending, but the person making the movie decided it was, I guess. It is one of the issues of adapting a story from one medium to another. A good metaphor for what they ended up doing by including this non-canon ending to the overall lore would be like deciding that the "game over" screen in a video game was part of the video game stories cannon. It doesn't make any sense with the overarching story. At least they didn't decide that the easter-egg ending where Silent Hill is all being controlled by a dog pulling leavers was cannon too.
    While I can personally appreciate the movie for what it is as a stand alone story, the ending is COMPLETE nonsense and why most og Silent Hill fans despise this movie. Honestly, it would have been better if it was just a separate story completely that was "inspired by" Silent Hill, but since original ideas don't sell anymore, we just have to deal with the fact that we will likely not see very many new and creative things in big-budget cinema for the foreseeable future.
    PS: If it makes you feel any better you can save the cop in the game.

What this monster represents was specific to that game's MC, and he doesn't appear in the first game at all, though he does appear in 1 of the later games as well as his original games and fans were pissed he appeared in that. The deal with pyramid head was that he was the manifestation of guilt of the main character of the second game over killing his wife. Silent Hill is basically a personal hell and the stories of the two games are unrelated besides taking place in Silent Hill. Why was he in this movie about the first game? Fan service.

    As a huge fan of Silent Hill, I loved this reaction! The movie was a very poor adaptation of the game's story, but it's still a serviceable horror flick. The production was fantastic and the direction was often shot-for-shot from the game. It had good fanservice moments, but it falls apart as a 'good' Silent Hill retelling. I think you would get more out of playing the game, but I'm glad you were able to enjoy this experience!

    Not a good adaptation but still a solid spooky movie with excellent practical effects.
    Edit- collecting drawings is in #5, which is more of a fanfiction than an official game, but not in the original 4. This movie is mostly inspired by game #1 with monsters from both 1 and 2. The first drawing is a plot point in #1. Play the games tho they're masterpieces

  • @JimPanzeeEsq

    This was the correct reaction I think. I'm a long-time fan since the first game and spent many an hour arguing that this movie is decent if not a faithful adaptation of the games.
    It does things like include the pics left behind by the daughter and uses locations from the games. Sean Bean in the record room recreates finding notes throughout Silent Hill as you play.
    What it does oddly is incorporate things from SH 2 & 3, the weirdest being Pyramid Head, as he's closely tied to the protagonist oh SH2 and makes no sense here. If you can stomach it, worth watching some longplays to see what you spot from the movies. SH Homecoming came not too long after this movie and liberally stole any ideas that were original to the movie, it was not developed by the original Team Silent.
    Also cool to hear you're a minister? I was raised atheist but consider myself agnostic. Always up for a chat to learn more. Your bandanna on your head looks like the Taoist symbol Yin & Yang, so that's kinda amusing.
    Watch Annihilation next , pretty please :-)

    • @PolterGibbst
      @PolterGibbst  11 месяцев назад +2

      I'm going to try to play the games after this, from what everyone had told me I'm sure I will enjoy them quite a bit.
      I was raised Baptist, then when I hit 18 and moved out I asked the question 'am I going to Church and believing in all this because I was raised/told to OR do I really believe this is true.'
      That start my journey into figuring out what is true. Asked a lot of the hard questions and ended up with a lot of good answers. I've had a few people ask me to do a Q&A style video on some Bible questions, which would be cool to me. So yeah if you got any questions fire away, I'm always willing to do my best to answer them.
      I actually haven't seen Annihilation. It is on my list to watch and quite a few have also brought it up... 🤔 may make for another video like this one.

    • @JimPanzeeEsq
      @JimPanzeeEsq 11 месяцев назад +2

      @@PolterGibbst I mean, everyone's tolerance will vary. I have no idea of your age and PS1 games can look and feel pretty janky to some. Avoid the HD remasters of 2&3 if you can. They were poorly handled visually and the new voice acting doesn't understand.
      I have no questions about Baptism off the top of my head. Think my point is more that just because I'm not, doesn't mean I disrespect others religions. Too used to the internet starting fights 😅

    • @PolterGibbst
      @PolterGibbst  11 месяцев назад +2

      @@JimPanzeeEsq I've heard stuff about the remasters. I'm in my late 20s and started with a PS1 so as long as the story is good I doubt it'll bother me. But now I have a PC so I'll have to figure out how to play them on there. Luckily they are popular enough I should be able to find all the info I need on how.
      Makes sense, I feel like some people do have the idea that what is going on here and in The Mist is what all Christians are like. (Since I did get comments about it in The Mist video I did) So to just be able to remind people not to throw out the batch of apples because of the bad one they saw is always nice.
      Biggest thing I've learned with making videos is to just be me. And of course this is a big part of me and how I choose to go about making these videos.
      And now after this video it is on to Shutter Island, and I think it will end up being my favorite video I've ever made.

    The atmosphere, monster designs, and sound design in this movie is TOP notch and matches the games perfect, you can really tell the director is a fan of the series! However as an actual adaption story and lore wise it falls short. At the time fans were livid that Pyramid Head shows up, as there is very specific lore reasons why that’s not possible (frankly I just love Pyramid Head so I let it slide lol)
    After the awful second movie came out I think the fans realized this was just an ok adaption, and a pretty fun mid tier horror film. The second movie has its moments but overall it’s a complete downgrade in every aspect.
    Anyways I def suggest you play the games if you’re a fan of survival horror games, or even horror in general! The 1st and 3rd can get lore heavy, I def suggest you start with SH2 (the best one imo) and then 1 and 3 after as they are connected :) SH4 is very different from the others but still has its charm, and any game after that just doesn’t feel like the SH franchise. Here’s hoping the SH2 remake is good!

    Even though the movie heavily deviated from the source material, I still love it's overarching message about the dangers of religious fanaticism. How someone who believes they're doing something wrong for the right reason only ends up creating a hell of their own design. Dalia in the game sacrificing Alessa to bring about Paradise, only to trap the town in a nightmarish hellscape. Christabella in the movie sacrificing Alessa to purge their community of "sin", only to trap the entire congregation in a purgatory. It's a nice real world reflection of how regressive conservatives and their persecutions only end up making the world worse for themselves and everybody around them.
