As a Michigander, the best way to visit is with an overnight stay. The island transforms outside of the touristy ferry hours during the day. An evening hike through town, a nice dinner, relaxing sit by the lake is at another level! I do hope you come back!
Ryan my wife and I want to visit your island in June, 2023. It seems The Grand Hotel is booked those three nights. Do you know any short term rental owners in the area?
@@glennhurd8288 I'm not sure on the short term rentals, but there is an abundance of small bed and breakfast style lodging or small independent hotels like the island house or lilac tree. They are a good stay and more casual than the grand.
Great Vid Josh! Small piece of advice from this experienced pilot and CFI....I see Chelsea was wearing sandals in the plane. Always have your passengers and co-pilot wear closed shoes. You never know when an emergency may require walking through hot oil or fuel and flames. Taught my daughter to fly and always required closed shoes. A few months ago we were flying together and we had an oil line from the engine compartment thru the firewall to the hobbs meter blow. Very hot oil on our feet! Glad we were not wearing sandals or flip flops. Keep up the good work!
I was with my Grandparents at the Grand Hotel during the filming of "Somewhere in Time". Christopher Reeves was in a room a couple of doors down and I managed to get his autograph. I was lucky in my youth to spend time every year with either my grandparents or parents at the Grand for a couple of days each time for different conventions. Later one of my college roommates worked at the Grand as a bartender. You need to check out the NW portion of MI and fly into KTVC!
This felt like old home week. I grew up on Mackinac Island and learned to fly there back in 1975-76, with an instructor based in Cheboygan. Logged so many hours flying in and out of both airports. The island airport has had a lot of upgrades since those days (just for starters, it was an unlighted field back then), but Cheboygan hasn't changed much at all.
Got my ticket at Grosse Isle Muni in '70 and flew into Mackinac a number of times before moving to Florida over 40 yrs ago. Was in a club with a 172m for a few years, built and flew gyros, had a property in a north Florida fly in community for 20 yrs before giving up aviation due to health. Wife and I have a summer place in Cheboygan that we enjoy each year now. A nephew captains one of the island ferry boats. Enjoy Mackinac but only go there if we have visitors. Am diabetic but love the fudge. JG
Commenting from 38 nautical miles north of ya in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, CYAM. Flew over Mackinac Island and the Mackinac Bridge after getting my PPL this summer and visited the place lots with family. Tons of fun
Yep... very hard working and lucky. I've flown VFR in a C172RG with an older autopilot and all of my IFR training to date was on steam gauges and without an autopilot. I can maintain altitude and heading, level off, set up a descent with no problem BUT by the end of 2 or 3 hours all under the hood I'm beat lol I see you're using Jepp's. I really like those. I still have all of my plates from 1995 when I first started my IFR training. A work move paused that for a very long time. I did my ground school and took my written at Hooks (KDWH) and gave the chief pilot a copy of the NDB approach plate that used to be there. I'm not sure if she was even born yet when that plate was made. Once again I find myself without a CFII (kudos to him, he finally got his airline shot) and so very close to getting my Instrument rating. Hours are done, cross country is done, test is passed... I just need to do some before checkride tuneup... I like the way you can condense all of that time into a very good video. It's definitely an art form that you've mastered.
Cheboygan is my hometown! You probably drove past my old house and my grandpas house on your way into town on Court street. Since getting my ticket while stationed in California, I've been dreaming of going home and flying in Michigan skies! Great video. I was reliving my childhood watching you stroll around Mackinac. Been over 8 years since I've been on the island.
This has to be one of your best videos ever. Love the mix of aviation plus the cool destination and you interacting as a couple. Love your content. Will you guys be at SnF??
I was supposed to fly into mackinaw island for my IFR 250 mile cross country trip in October and the weather changed my game plan that day never got to go there.i got my ifr certificate in January and after watching this video I am going to fly there real soon can’t wait I will be flying from Griffith Indiana to mackinaw
Very nice. Some of the East Frisian islands off Germany's North Sea coast also have an airfield, but no cars, except maybe some tractors and an ambulance. There is also no fuel at the airfield, but during summer weekends they are sometimes busier than a large airport with 5 or 6 planes in the pattern. No instrument approach, though.
Josh I look forward to the next episode anticipating more great cinematography and narration. Please keep up the running dialog of what you are doing in the cockpit as it is like having a free instructor ride. You have motivated me to dust off my skills and get back in the air as I received my multi-engine commercial instrument ticket in 1970. I can't wait to be flying on my own.
Next time you're in the UP, fly to Houghton ("It's not the end of the world but you can see it from there."), KCMX, and take a ferry or a seaplane to Isle Royale. Be prepared to rough it.
Love this. Being based near Detroit and having never been to Mackinac, I was fortunate enough to be able to see the island for the first time when I popped out at 800’ on final to see this beautiful island staring right in front of me as my first full instrument rated approach. Such a magical day it was 3 years ago. I’m so glad you got to experience this wonderful place. Thank you for all the IMC videos. It helped me so much to prepare to be comfortable in my journey to become instrument rated.
Love seeing all the Michigan coverage. The scenery around the perimeter of the island looks great, might have to go back there sometime and ride around. Last time I went to Mackinac Island, I was in high school and had done a 400 mile bicycle trip (5 days of riding) along the West coast of Michigan's lower peninsula. Needless to say the last thing I wanted to was rent a bicycle while on the island, lol.
I have been watching your videos for over 5 years from eastern Canada and am looking forward to PART 5 as you make your first trip across the northern border! Hope it’s the first of many to come. All the best!
Welcome to my State! I’m glad you visited Mackinaw Island and it looks like you both had a blast. If you ever find yourselves back in Michigan, fly over to Drummond Island (DRM) and check it out. Another beautiful MI island.
Amazing trip guys! Thank you for taking the time to put all this together to share and still go through your preflight decisions along with the full flight/approachbrief/landing just as if you were instructing. As a newly minted instrument pilot I can never see enough approaches and just the full thought process we go through. Blue Skies my friend 👍
Awesome flight. I would love to visit there someday. Thanks for taking us along. Hey Josh if you don't mind saying what size ipad and type of mount are you using?
Enjoying the series so far! If you do indeed start making this “an after Oshkosh tradition,” would highly suggest a flight the other direction towards Madeline Island(4R5) and the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. Safe flying!
One of our fav places! So glad you could experience it together, and have been eager to see this video come out. Welcome to the Michigan scud. We get lots of it coming off Lake Michigan. If this becomes an annual post Airventure event, tell Chelsea to give me a shout. Y'all could probably crash at my hangar and we can make an adventure.
While I've loved your channel for a long time now, this might be my new favorite series. This is such a great adventure for the two of you and your video makes me really want to visit Mackinac Island. Just wish I had my own plane to arrive in your style.
G,day Josh and Chelsea from Sydney Australia. What a unique and obviously cherished Island: now that's heritage conservation done well. The buildings gave me 'goosebumps' I'll research a little into Macinac Island 🏝️ 🛩️
Great video of Mackinac Island and your fight over. You have a real talent for flying and videoing. Keep up the excellent work and I will be looking forward to your next video from cold Massillon Ohio.
Thanks for another great Video Josh! always enjoy your quality content. can you share how you come up with the storyline of each video? part 4 and the remainder are put together sooo well! excited to see Toronto next!
Really enjoying your videos! Especially after meeting you both in GLS a few months ago. BTW, use to own sister ship N80982 and got all my ratings in her. Enjoy your trip!
Aside from the horses being used like that, that seems like a pretty cool place. Going to try and check it out via MSFS 2020. And I like the plane is old yet modern. 👍🏾
Your living the dream sir. Just an airplane, a pretty companion, and the world ahead full of adventure.
As a Michigander, the best way to visit is with an overnight stay. The island transforms outside of the touristy ferry hours during the day. An evening hike through town, a nice dinner, relaxing sit by the lake is at another level! I do hope you come back!

My wife and I live outside of Chicago and I would have never considered flying to Mackinaw Island. After watching this video I do now. Thanks Josh.
Mackinac Island is incredible! Thank you for highlighting a hidden gem 💎
You flew right over my house. This area is awesome and I’m glad you were able to come.

Good morning from Minnesota!! I haven't been there since I was a kid I definitely need to go back!!

Great video, as always. The only thing missing was "The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" as your soundtrack!
My favorite part is that you have someone to enjoy your passion with.
To rare these days.
Enjoy every day.
Mackinac Island: definitely a bucket list destination
Well then, after watching this I have to say that we are going to fly to Mackinac Island next month. Thank you for sharing this.
I used to fly my Piper Navajo CR into Mackinac Island many times back in the 80's when I lived in Michigan. That island is something special.....
Nice Video, 13:36- There is one car on Mackinac Island. It is an ambulance. Hope you don't need it. :)

Tick made my ankle itch :)
Fantastic
As always
Living my dream of flying IRL vicariously through you two. Smashed that like button. Great content as always!!!!! What an amazing destination.
9:20 interesting thing right there.. i noticed it the other day flyin a Diamond. Instead of a shadow on the ground there's a large bright spot.
Another great video Josh! We went to Mackinac Island last Summer and can’t wait to go back. Beautiful area!
Excellent video! I can’t wait till y’all fly back to MI sometime soon!
Cheers 🥂 my friend
Caleb’s Aviation 😊
You guys are the best! Congrats!!! I wish I could meet you both somewhere!
I'm glad you enjoyed Mackinaw island. Many childhood er and adult memories there. The lilac festival is a must.

Once again the narration, cinematic effect with the added music were outstanding!!!!
Home sweet home! Pure Michigan
Wow what a spot , great flying as usual but man the scenery!.
You'll have to add tick check to the checklist. Mackinac Island looks like a great place to vacation.
Thank you for sharing such nice moments 🙏
We live near Traverse City ,Mi . The island is a jewel as well as all of Northern Michigan . Shhhh don’t tell.
One word: Awesome.
16:54 "To absorb the beauty..."

As usual I'm left hanging for the next episode!
Glad to see Russell getting down time away from Mercedes and F1 for a while 😂
Another great video mate 😃
Took the ferry with my marching band for a festival. We had such a perfect day on Mackinac
We always enjoyed day or weekend trips to Mackinac Island in our C210, beautiful place just to relax with great views!
Love everything on this channel.
Reminds me why I love living in Michigan and my ventures in Northern Michigan. Great video.

What a fantastic experience that must be on the island. Thanks for sharing the adventure with us!
Love the place been there several times.
great episode! hope you guys enjoyed your trip!
Is that a second pitot tube on the right wing? I probably should go back and watch the avionics update video.
Enjoying the series so far! If you do indeed start making this “an after Oshkosh tradition,” would highly suggest a flight the other direction towards Madeline Island(4R5) and the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. Safe flying!

Loved the video would love to visit there someday but the burning question I have now is what kind of puppy was that in the Canadian scenes?
While I've loved your channel for a long time now, this might be my new favorite series. This is such a great adventure for the two of you and your video makes me really want to visit Mackinac Island. Just wish I had my own plane to arrive in your style.

Those horses are probably extremely well cared for.
What a wonderful episode!!
Loving this series
Love that place
Very nice !
After watching this video, my wife asked me to make this a yearly adventure for us. Looking at booking rooms at the Grand Hotel right now!
