What a dream match Kapil had ..Kapil dev took 11 wickets in total ( 4/90 in first innings & 7/56 in second inings) and Scored 84 (off 98 balls with a strike rate of 85.71) clubbered 13 fours and 1 Six during the process -only Richards used to score runs as quickly as kapil does those days.
This kind of performance will be hailed as one of the greatest allround performance in current generation - and the TV channels would repeat his highlights more than a month .
He is my Man of the match / player of the match .

Both Kapil and Gavaskar stand as shining beacon in Indian cricket. As commentator rightly said in the end, "India owed much to Gavaskar, who relinquished his captaincy after winning the series against Pakistan". Sunny always believed in leaving the ground when one is at his best. He relinquished test captaincy after winning this 1980 test series by 2-0, his One-day captaincy after winning Benson & Hedges World Series Cricket championship in Australia in 1985, retired from test cricket after playing that memorable, rather immortal knock of 96 against Pakistan in Bangalore, and finally, played wonderfully in 1987 World Cup - made his first ODI hundred (which incidentally was second fastest at that time) in just 85 balls, before retiring from ODIs and all forms of cricket. Hats off to both Sunny and Kapil. Their excellent show in this match is the testimony that they are among the greatest all-time test players.

Minor correction - Gavaskar had stepped down after that 5th Test in protest of a tour of the Windies that was proposed to be held right after the Indo-Pak Series. The tour was eventually cancelled. Viswanath captained India at the last test in Calcutta which was drawn. Gavaskar returned as the Captain in the following winter tour of Australia - New Zealand in 1981 and remained captained till the end of the return tour to Pakistan 1982 which India lost 3-0. He was then replaced by Kapil for the Windies tour that followed and the World Cup of 1983. Kapil lost the captaincy to Gavaskar after India was beaten in the tests and one day series at home against the mighty Windies whom they had beaten just a few months earlier to win the World Cup. Under Gavaskar, India won the first-ever Asia Cup but then lost the home series against England who came back to win it 2-1 after being beaten in the first test. At the end of the series, Gavaskar retained the captaincy for the World Championship tournament in Australia in 1985 but he announced his decision to step down after the tournament even before the Indian team had left for Australia. After the successful WC campaign and following Gavaskar's resignation, Kapil was brought back as the Captain and he remained so until the end of 1987 World Cup when Dilip Vengsarkar took over. That 80s era saw a remarkable merry-go-round of Indian Cricket Leadership between Gavaskar and Kapil and much of it was blown out of proportions by the board and the print media of that time.

Few points: 1. Kapil was v quick, probably fastest in the match, forcing hurried reactions from batsmen, esp on bouncers and the way he bowled out batsmen. Must be in early 140s. 2. He batted so effortlessely against Imran, without helment! Absolute masterclass. That nataraja shot that he invented! 3. Gavaskar, OMG!

I was there as a nine year old. Vividly remember the bus rides everyday . It was either 15ps or 10 ps for a ticket - Get off at the busstop. I think i was in D stand , Not the greatest of the seats. But what the heck, i was 9 years old. There were 3 sixes in the match - One each by Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Binny. Sadly to date, that was the only test match i have watched in the stadium- thanks to doordarshan for live telecast. Thanks for the uploader. for reliving old memories.

A few interesting things I remember about this test: 1) Kapil made 84 and took 11 wickets in this match, had he kept his head down and scored another 16 runs, he would have been the first ever player to make a 100 and take 10 wickets in the same test, a feat achieved by Botham two tests later against India at Bombay. 2) Kapil got 7 runs off one shot in this match - he ran 3 runs when Miandad overthrew for 4. 3) Gavaskar stepped down as captain after leading India to its first series victory against Pak in 28 years (it was reportedly due to a dispute with the board about a scheduled tour of West Indies).

Kapil Dev is probably the greatest cricketer India has ever produced.
Till his arrival on cricketing scene, India was not known for its medium fast bowlers.
India had a rich legacy of world class spinners but there wasn't any single new ball medium pacer ball who had made a mark in cricketing arena.
    Kapil changed all that.
With his medium paced fast bowling, inswings, outswings, bouncers etc he soon became a force to reckon with.
With his hard hitting batting coming as a bonus he soon established himself as a top notch all-rounder of tha era.
His exploits on the cricket field were no less than the other great all-rounders of that era namely Ian Botham, Imran Khan and Sir Richard Hadlee.
It is always said that fast bowlers hunt in a pair.
Alas, Kapil didn't had an equally good medium pacer to support him at the other hand.
For a good part of his career he simply waged a lone battle.
He was a lone warrior who fought against all odd circumstances.
He just turned the Indian cricket on its head in 1970s and 80s and became a darling of the nation.
Winning World Cup in 1983 is just an icing on the cake.
Indian Cricket owes a lot to this magnificent all-rounder.

Thanks a zillion Jai saab. My cricket watching/following started with the tragic series in Pak 82. During the series when I heard that we beat them quite convincingly at home it seemed incredulous as we were battered by Imran. Imran's jump is still not prominent here....seems to have perfected late 81. OMG Kapil....he swatted Imran for a huge six and played like right handed Sobers! I get very sad that Kapil gets short shrift in the best allrounders debate....he's simply the most naturally talented of them all. He was quite nippy until 83-84 series against windies(29 wickets) and had a knee operation thereafter. He lost all his bite and mostly remained a containing/stock bowler post surgery. While everybody goes gaga about Imran in 82(rightfully), Kapil isn't celebrated as much for his glorious feats. For chrissakes he won the World Cup at 24 playing the best ever one day innings. Viv's 189 was against a mediocre English attack, in a regular series but western press. commentators eulogize it no end. Kapil for me on any day including weekends;-)

Not many people know that Kapil was the
1st man to take not only 200 but also 250 wickets in ODIs. From 1988 to 1994, he was the world's leading wicket taker in ODIs, ahead of Botham, Imran, Hadlee, Marshall etc.
Kapil is the only captain to take 9 wickets in an innings.
Only man to claim 400 wickets and score 5000 runs, also only man to claim 400 wickets and 4000 runs in Tests.
(Though Sobers is said to be the greatest all rounder, he managed only 235 wickets in 93 tests at a horrible strike rate of 87 and a poor avg of 34, Sobers also has no 10 wicket hauls and only 6 five wicket hauls.
If you think Kallis was the best, then he has only 292 wickets in a whopping 166 tests at a not so good strike rate of 69 and a poor avg of 32, also again he has no 10 wicket hauls and only 5 five wicket hauls)
World record 184 innings without getting run out.
He is the 1st man to hit 4 consecutive 6s in tests. (Now equalled by Afridi and De Villiers but not broken).
He is still in the list of top 10 wicket takers in tests.
Strike rate of 94 in tests, higher than Richards and Sehwag, 95 in ODI, higher than Richards.
Still youngest to 100 wickets and 1000 runs, 200 wickets and 2000 runs, 300 wickets and 3000 runs.
He is still the youngest man to take 300 Test wickets.
(Was also youngest to take 100, 200 and 400 but these 3 records stand broken now).
He is still the youngest captain to win a World Cup.
At the time of his retirement, he was the world's leading wicket taker in tests, and remained so for six years, until Walsh broke it in 2000.
Scored 500 runs and took 50 wickets in the same year twice (Pollock and Botham have also achieved this feat)
Has been holding the world record for the fastest 50 at Lord's in a Test Match off just 35 balls for 40 years now. (1982)
    INDIA Records:
Fastest century by an Indian in Tests in 74 balls. (Later equalled by Azhar but not broken).
2nd Fastest 50 by an Indian in tests in 30 balls. (Pant now fastest in 29 balls, record broken by just one ball)
2nd fastest to reach 100 wickets in 25 tests (Bumrah is now fastest in 24 tests, record broken by just one test)
Second fastest 50 by an Indian in ODI in 22 balls (Fastest by Agarkar in 21 balls, record broken by just one ball)
First Indian player to score an ODI century
First Indian bowler to take 5 wickets in ODIs
He is the 1st Indian to complete his maiden test century with a six. (Harbhajan is the only other Indian to do so)
(Myth: Kapil never bowled a no ball: This is wrong, he did bowl no balls.
In this video, Kapil himself says that he had bowled no balls. ruclips.net/video/Otolhum-xzA/видео.html)

Wow Thanks. Kapil with his famous Najtraja shot ruclips.net/video/8vJ8lKqUveg/видео.html and Gavaskar was compact. Was hoping to see better quality of the video of Kiri's catch of Mudassar. But it is what it is. Thanks a bunch!
