"Xiaolan is the informant of the whole palace." Right?! This is why she is one of my favorite characters in this show. She is so invested in her gossips and despite not being completely accurate, she steers Maomao towards the mysteries to be resolved. Pretty much none of the plot could progress if she wasn't there. And she is adorable.
For the emperor its all politics to be honest so the emperor may or may not personally like the arrangements but he has to take on concubines either to produce an heir or to keep specific political alliances in check or both. On that note since some of the concubines whether high ranking or low ranking are for specifically there just for political strategies he may not sleep with them depending on what that political arrangement is like. That doesnt change the fact that it is a suffocating and painful system but thinking about it that way helps to lessen my own personal frustrations with the emperor and the historical context in general.
novels/screenplays have several type of characters, like main protagonist, it's love interest, ect... Xiaolan is a one of the jesters in that story. Jesters are used as sidekicks, comedic reliefs, or as a source of gossip/information for main protagonist, to give impulse/reason to advance our hero's journey
Something I think happened sometimes with Emperors is that a consort doesn't necessarily mean they are being touched. and I think Lishhu is technically the previous Emperor's Consort so she could be passed down since she is not of age or other circumstances.
The previous Emperor was a pervert who only took young girls. 9 yrs old and one became pregnant at 10 yrs old. His son the current Emperor has no such tastes. His consort when he was a Prince was Ah-Duo and after the Emperor died Lishu 9 yrs old and still a virgin became a widow and left the Rear Palace returned to her family. Based on the ill treatment she gets from her Ladies in Waiting (reflects her poor treatment). I suspect the current Emperor (and big sister Ah-Duo) returned her to the Rear Palace to protect her and prevent some other Consort being pushed upon the Emperor.
You might know this already but just to assure you, the emperor has NEVER touched the young concubine. When she is older and more mature he will. 16:26 SOME men are trash and the majority consider those few to be trash.
Episode 4 is the best but the whole series is amazing. You should remember though that this show is set in ancient China and they were far from the human rights we have today. Knowing that, I think this series is pretty sedate in its treatment of the underprivileged and women. It hints at terrible things, which were probably commonplace, but it never shows it. As such, I think Jinshi is quite progressive and kind. Yes, he feels possessive of Maomao (because he obviously likes her) but he never forces himself on Maomao beyond what is required to bring justice to the back palace. He's basically just in love and the hairpin isn't quite the "claim" the concubine playfully says it is. You'll see this confirmed in the next episode.
Maomao is a palace servant. Jinshi is someone with sword fight training. Jinshi is falling for none of the ladies trying to seduce him (hate women?). Maomao made aphrodisiac for Jinshi. Jinshi is falling for Maomao. I wonder whom the rumor is about...
Gain weight. Maomao has been taking care of the sick concubine for 2 month (including before the slap), during that time she worked a lot, rested little, and ate even less. She lost weight and that why the other lady in waiting want her to eat that much.
