    Flagellation is also known as "Flogging" or to beat someone repeatedly usually with a whip or a flexible rod. Mind you, the floggers are usually martial arts experts who can, if-so-commanded and without me painting a picture for y'all, could do some serious damage to a person.

    Another commenter gave an explanation on another reactor channel. I copy it here for you ladies.
    @jakeDgirl wrote:
    The Emperor ordered Maomao to cure Lady Lihua in front of Lady Gyokuyou as a political move. It's been mentioned a couple of times now that Lady Gyokuyou is the emperor's current favored concubine. Especially since Gyokuyou's child is the only baby alive. Lady Lihua is also very sick and unable to serve the emperor with nightly duties. So obviously the entire rear palace and all political factions can feel that Lady Gyokuyou has monopoly of the emperor's affections right now.
    By appearing that he cares for Lady Lihua right in front of Lady Gyokuyou, the emperor is subtly giving Lady Gyokuyou a message that she is still a mere concubine, and the emperor has not decided to make her empress yet. "So stay in line, don't let the current situation rush to your head."
    Using Maomao, Lady Gyokuyou's servant, is also another political move. For sure, the emperor has other imperial doctors, and yet he chose someone from Lady Gyokuyou's faction to save her political rival. If Maomao succeeds, Lady Gyokuyou might be rewarded, but not much. And the harem power will be balanced again. But if Maomao fails & Lady Lihua dies, the emperor won't allow Lady Gyokuyou to have all the power in the harem. It could be spun that Lady Gyokuyou ordered Maomao to let Lady Lihua die. Thus, Lady Gyokuyou will lose power in the harem, and her family and her homeland/vassal state's power would suffer consequences.
    The rivalry between Lady Gyokuyou and Lady Lihua makes it difficult for Maomao to tattle. Her direct superior is Lady Gyokuyou. If Maomao tattles to Lady Gyokuyou, then if Lady Gyokuyou takes Maomao's side and tattles to the emperor, Lady Gyokuyou will be viewed as meddling with her rival concubine's people.
    Maomao doesn't ask help from Jinshi because:
    1) she's already distrustful towards him & she questions his motives for roping her inside the rear palace
    2) Jinshi's power in the rear palace is weird. As a mere eunuch, he should be lower than a high rank concubine. But because he is directed by the emperor, the concubines can't just dismiss him. So there is also a weird power balance between Jinshi & the concubines. Jinshi isn't allowed to give benefits to 1 concubine over the other. So Maomao can't ask him to meddle in-between Lady Gyokuyou vs Lady Lihua factions. But if Jinshi offers help himself, that's another story.
    3) In the previous episode, Maomao already deduced that Jinshi's official status is a eunuch tasked to be the harem manager, but is actually hiding his real status which might be close to the emperor. Asking help from Jinshi might open a can of worms & attention she can't anticipate.
    The Emperor may have ordered Maomao, but it's Maomao's responsibility in the end. That's what royalty means. The emperor will absolutely stand by and watch Maomao fail just to balance out the power in the harem.

    This was the episode when you realized "Oh, Maomao's like Frieren. She a girl boss. This show gun be guuuuud."
    2:28 here's the thing... she does so on purpose, on the regular (not as much after she 'came to work' at the Inner Palace). Even her dad thinks she's insane for it lol
    11:44 well one can look at it this way i suppose: she lost her son but gained a daughter

    Fuyou warrior lover was the leader who restrained the soldiers from killing the villagers.
    Also as a Princess she could never marry a soldier, but as a concubine bestowed by the Emperor these status differences were eliminated.
    I am sure Jinshi and the Emperor understood this and played along.

    6:54The VA for Maomao also did Clementine in Overlord and Tanya in The Saga of Tanya the Evil so mad crazy tones are well within her wheelhouse. 12:52 Maomao is probably telling her about paizuri, a method she can use on the emperor employing her ample bosom. If you Google you may get a NSFW answer, which explains Lady Lihua's blush and steam from the brain.

    Something I noticed by chance: at 3:00 Maomao refers to the emperor as Mikado which reminded me of the game of the same name, so I looked it up and apparently it is no longer used in Japan to mean emperor and even actively discouraged, so I'm guessing that this is an attempt to make it sound more time appropriate.

    Regarding Lady Li Hua's angry outburst in episode 1,
    I'm not sure specifically what kind of poisoning she got, but one of the symptom of heavy metal poisoning is mental change. So it's possible that her outburst was caused by the poison. And once that cleared from her system, we now see what is actually her regular behavior. A calm, elegant lady.

      And also both her and her son was sick so not many parent would be in their right mind when their newborn baby is sick like that. Then there's also a thing about Lady Lihua having a prince, which would made him at that time the most suitable candidate to be crown prince and Lihua to be Empress. Of course she would grow more suspicious of people around, especially other concubines who might do bad things to take away Lihua's prince.

      The information comes from the opposing camp, so they probably suspecting something like an attempt of sabotaging their camp by getting on the emperor's favor while covering up the curses which is supposed to be coming from that camp.
      Things got fked up because they didn't get along, even before both concubines getting pregnant.

    11:39 her fault isnt jealousy, her child was in a dire condition as was she, also the makeup had a lot of side affects including changes in personality. Soo due to the stress and her poor condition along with the side affects of the makeup obviously she’d act very differently

    5:08 : no it's not depression. Every high ranking concubine has their individual colour that's represented their title
    Lady Lihua: Blue because she is the Wise consort and given the Crystal pavilion (that's why everything of her is blue)
    Lady Gyokuyou: Crimson/Red because she is the Precious consort and given the Jade pavilion {so everything in her palace is red and green}
    Lady Ah-duo: Black because she is the Pure consort and given the Garnet pavilion (it was simple and practical in a set up to represent her and that's why everything is purple or black)
    Lady Lishu (Rishu): White because she is the Virtuous consort and given the Diamond pavilion

    • @Lightkie

      (梨花) Rifa in Japanese, Lihua in Chinese.
      Since the setting is in "China", it's Lihua

    •  7 дней назад +1

      One thing to keep in mind is just that: they are Chinese names, but pronounced by Japanese people, since the show is Japanese. So I wouldn’t count on the pronunciations to be spot on Chinese… There is some “butchering” going on I think (similar to when you try to pronounce Japanese with English logic).
      I also feel like different characters in the show do this to varying degrees with the same names. It varies with the character and voice actor.

    •  7 дней назад +1

      @@IanChristopher 梨花, pear blossoms? So is there some type of flower naming theme going on? 😮

    • @IZEASGT
      @IZEASGT 7 дней назад +3

      Fuyou was named for a flower too.
      Visually, though, Lihua is actually associated with the Chinese bellflower, not the pear blossom. Some other female characters have their own flowers too - Gyokuyou’s is the peony, and Pairin is apparently the magnolia.
