Condensation in the tank, over time, can build up. Keeping a full tank can minimize this effect. Draining the water separator and filter change is an easy solution. Drained fuel collected, can be used as a camp fire starter.

Thank you!! I just ditched my diesel mechanic bf.. the next day my 99 was running sluggish and the light flashes on a few times on the way home. Thanks to you I can do it myself! Definitely thankful you posted this! Especially since I have a 01 excursion with the same engine! And he thought I was going to ask him to do it! 😂😂

Is this only on diesel engines? I have a 2002 F150 that refuses to start. Just a few minutes before turning it off my wife did cross a huge puddle of muddy water. The car did not sputter or turn off, she turned it off at the bus stop and waited for the kids to leave for about 20 minutes and then the truck would not start

Fuel water separators are only on diesels. Gas engines do not have it.

Alcohol like STP, will mix with water in gas and burn away the water over time.

Thanks this was a very helpful article. I had a little water , very minimal but my fuel in the bowl was a very dark color and every once in a while , it misses, surges I'd say and really don't understand why my fuel color is very dark. Would anyone have any input on this ?
