      Agree. When I got a bit more serious about crochet I did tons of research and bought a few premium hooks to try. It took patience to figure out what worked best, but once I found the right hooks for me I bought a whole set. They cost a fortune but I haven't had any hand discomfort since, and that's the most important thing since I crochet for several hours a day. I can't stress enough the importance to taking a little bit of time and money (if you're in a position to do so of course) to find the best quality tools for you.

    I had such IMMENSE guilt when I started knitting because I dropped $140.00 on a full set of ChaioGoo needles. I had feelings of “I’m just a beginner” and “I don’t exactly know what I’m doing, so why do I need to spend this $$$ on a fancy needle set” etc. I feel so validated after watching this. Hearing someone else say that it’s OK (nay, important even) to invest in your interest so you don’t have to FIGHT or STRUGGLE just to enjoy the creative process is so refreshing. And I do feel like good tools made me a more adventurous crafter. Thank you for telling people that they deserve to have the best they can afford for their creative outlet of choice ♥️♥️♥️

      Chiaogoo are glorious to use! I'm also a beginner knitter but I'm enjoying using these needles so much more than I did my cheap bamboo ones. They might have been expensive, but I'm so glad I went ahead with them anyway.

    • @hitzchicky
      @hitzchicky 3 года назад +43

      You'll ultimately spend a lot LESS money just buying good tools up front than buying multiple bad tools until finding the one you like. I had the same argument with myself over the chiagoo needles, but I don't regret it for a minute. I figured that I would ultimately end up buying them eventually anyway, but in the mean time would have probably spent just as much on bad tools until I got to that point.

    • @Vee-qq1pn

      I also bought Chiagoo to learn how to knit after crocheting for 45 years and I’m SO glad I did. Your work is as good as your tools and let’s face it, knitting is hard, lol, but thanks to my Chiagoo, I have finally learned. I have such a sense of accomplishment after trying many times with inferior needles. Chiagoo rocks!!!

    • @Enig_Mata
      @Enig_Mata 3 года назад +4

      I did that exact thing as you when I decided to get serious about knitting. I started off with a set of $12 bamboo needles from Amazon that I used to learn to knit. About an hour later, I knew knitting would be for me and decided to buy a good set of needles so I would enjoy the process more. My only problem with Chiaogoo needles is I started off with 5" complete twist set and now own the 5" & 4" set in Twist and Spin, the red and blue shorties, and the Minis. Those needles are a joy to use. Now, I'm thinking of getting the Tunisian interchangeable set.

    • @fuzzypumpkin7743
      @fuzzypumpkin7743 3 года назад +2

      I wouldn't do that as a beginner because I think it takes a bit to decide exactly what you want in a needle. That said, Chiaogoos are exactly where I ended up! I kinda want to try Tunisian out but I won't even try newish regular hooks because I love the Bates I have from my gramma (they are from the 60s) and I can't do ergos, but now knowing that Chiaogoo makes those I think I'll order just one.

    • @jahbern
      @jahbern 2 года назад +13

      My favorites are cheapies (in the cloth diaper world, which is a whole other obsession we call generic diapers from China “China cheapies” and it’s interesting how these groups intersect 😂). I have two full sets because I keep coming back to them and want to have one at home and one for on the go. I went on vacation and didn’t want to risk losing my favorite hook - but also I wanted to have it with me. So I bought more. At $16 for a whole set, who can resist??? 😂😂😂 That said, I have purchased cheap hooks I don’t like. And a couple expensive name brands that I don’t ever use.

    You really make a good point about investing in tools that are going to make it a joy to sit and crochet/knit. You’re right: I’ve tried to make hooks work by using a nail file and clear nail polish to smooth out a rough wooden knitting needle or crochet hook. if I just would’ve invested in a better quality hook then I wouldn’t have to do all of that fooling around to make it work. A great dupe for the prym crochet hooks is sold at hobby lobby. They are almost exactly alike and are MUCH much cheaper, around 2 dollars a hook. They are very reliable, I've had the ones I have rn for a little less than a year, and there is no sign of wear. They also have different colors for different hook sizes that you can see throughout the hook. So no matter how you store it, you know the size. The sizes range from 5 mm to 15 mm. Works well for all grips. It's also very pretty with some floral details. The hooks are called luxury crochet hook/ ergonomic crochet hook.

I've really enjoyed this video, thanks for inviting us to watch. One thing I have noticed as a lurker on all things crochet on Amazon is how much cheaper it is to buy a set of crochet hooks as apposed to buying them individually. I have pretty large hands and like it to land on the heel of my hand. When I saw the Prym head, I thought maybe I'd like those but I'm curious about the plastic. I've used plastic before and they're great at first but after use the finish wears and they don't glide well at all. Have you used the Prym enough to know if the finish holds up? I love the moment when you were like No I hate these Tunisian hooks. So validating for me! After I learned the new technique I thought maybe I should get some hooks. I went cheap like $12 cheap and I hated them. Felt bad I just threw them away. I saved up and got a better set. So nice to know I wasn’t being crazy, always thought maybe I needed to try harder to make them work. Like it was me not them. Thanks for relieving my guilt. As always thanks for the great video!!

    I'm pretty new to crochet and working on my first large WIP. I would have NEVER THOUGHT the yarn combo matched with the wrong hook could make for such an unenjoyable experience!! I'm tight on money so I had to pick up a Red Heart brand on sale and an every day regular hook on the rack. The RESIDUE that builds up on the hook when working with that yarn is atrocious. I can work through it, but I'm also finding myself washing my hook with Dawn dish soap to fully get the sticky gunk off when it gets so sticky I can't crochet. I'm glad I clicked on this video. I can't wait to learn more about quality tools and yarns!

    I agree with you about the correct tools, there is that saying if it’s bad workmanship don’t blame the tool blame the tool user, but you have a point with this, I recently got back into crocheting because of tutorials like yours and some other crochet profs, but I bought myself some wooden hooks and I can tell you if I’d have been a complete beginner I’d have given up after the first attempt with my wooden hooks.... so Toni you’re totally correct, get the correct tools so you can enjoy the art without losing confidence...good video 👌🏼💚

    Regarding the Divit Shipley hooks. I read most of the reviews on Amazon and many people mentioned the lettering being where their thumb rested. Then I see you struggling and getting grumpy at hooks that make an “attempt” and then I think oh! It’s not all fields of roses. I read somewhere that someone with a pencil grip really loved the swing style handles, so I wouldn't discount trying it for yourself, if you want to. I occasionally switch grips to pencil grip just to see if I can do it (Idk, it's interesting to me how it's done), and I'm getting better at it, but I'm definitely a knife grip person.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ENCOURAGING ME TO GET A GOOD TUNISIAN CROCHET HOOK!!! For ages all I had was a straight metal afghan hook which worked fine for small projects but it was unwieldy and uncomfortable to use and it made me think ‘maybe tunisian crochet just is not for me’, but after following your advice I got a nice interchangeable 6.5mm hook and a few lengths of cables and have been absolutely smashing out tunisian crochet projects lately. The past 2 days i’ve made 2 of your Mesa hats (beautiful) and am gonna get started on the scarf soon. I made your smock stitch cottage pillow with Bernat home dec too!! Having the time of my life.

    My husband knows I love to crochet. He invested in a night light that goes around your neck with recharging of course by now they have come up with a new charging. I kept my charging Cord from my old S7 android. Just plus in and charge your light to your old cell phone Cord. This neck flashlight throws off good lighting but when you wear them the light throw off a pretty good swath of light.
    And if you have a Power outage this crochet flashlight comes in really handy.
