  • The Aussie Fisherman Greg, getting up close to a giant saltwater crocodile, on a mudbank. Soaking up the sun to get warm. This crocodile is at least 4.5 metres long. Every year, I see more of them. They range from half a metre to 5 metres. Sometimes, the big ones have their mouth open, and inside their mouth is a pretty orange colour. In the early winter, they slip into the water when they hear the motor of my crabbing boat, but after a couple of weeks of me going up past them, they don't rush into the water. I think crocodiles know if they are in danger, they are a very smart animal.
I worry about people getting taken by these massive crocodiles. I see people's foot marks on the mudbanks where these crocodiles lay to sun themselves. Crocodiles can sneak up on you in very shallow water. You would have no chance of getting away. Even though they would probably have plenty of wild pigs that swim across the muddy mangrove creeks and crabs and fish as well to eat I am pretty sure if someone was near the edge of the water, it would be just another meal to a crocodile. Years ago, I used to take chances swimming in these creeks, not any more. I have a healthy respect for these monsters now.
