Happy Birthday Cary! I hope your 65th year has moments of joy and peace. Thank you so much for hosting this, I am so excited to participate. I am going to spin Finn ( from my ewe Bonnie) alpaca and some angora mixed in. My favorite spinning resource is the Fleece and Fiber Source Book. I return to it again and again to learn about breeds and spinning the fiber. I would be thrilled to have the Folk Socks book. Warm wishes!

Happy Birthday! I hope you had wonderful day,
I'm ready to start spinning, black (it looks more like dark chocolate to me) Border Leicester washed fleece / locks and some dark red Shetland (with some nylon added) roving for the cuffs, heels, and toes. I'll be spinning on my Quebec (CPW) wheel, which likes to spin thin, but my sock yarn usually ends up being sport weight two-ply, and I use 70 to 75 grams for a pair of socks. They're not shorties but not boot socks either. Happy Spinning!

Wishing you a very Happy Birthday!!! Your generosity is amazing. Congratulations to Mary, I hope you enjoy spinning this beautiful fiber. Cary, I don’t have a “reference” for handspun, other than knitting with it. The fiber used to create the yarn, really is the reference to the project to be knitted, crocheted, or woven. For socks, it is always toe up with my favorite toe, and heel, then the in between is whatever it wants to be :) this time, I think it might be some cables, we shall see. Enjoy some yummy cake!!!!! Stay warm. Hugs.

Belated birthday wishes - I hope you had a fabulous day doing all the things which you enjoy doing the most.
I celebrated your birthday by travelling into deepest Lincolnshire and buying my first spinning wheel. The seller said she hadn’t been spinning very much in the last year and wanted to do a bit of declutterring, so I came away with some Shetland fluff and 2 books as well as the wheel and all its gubbins!
The Homespun, Handknit book looks very interesting - I particularly like the hat and mitten pattern you’ve shown in a previous video. If you’ve never come across it “In the footsteps of sheep” is well worth a read in my opinion.
I shall be vicariously enjoying all the sock shenanigans and aspire to being a competent enough spinner to join in next year (if you do this for a 4th time).

Happy Birthday Cary! I am joining the spin along for the first time. I have been missing spinning and this seems like a do-able project to get me re-involved. I am going to make a 3 ply, and was just looking at The Spinners Book of Yarn Designs by Sarah Anderson, because she had done some sock experiments. I think I will try an opposing ply yarn, which in her experiment was longer lasting as well as more elastic. My fiber is a mix of a number of things, none of which is at all elastic. So the opposing ply method is 2 plys spun Z and 1 ply spun S, all plied together S. (Homespun, Handknit is one of my favorite books ever.)

I am thinking of using some gotland/finull/dog for the cuff as it does not need a lot of strength and some spelsau for the foot. I think I will blend the fibers from the outer and inner coat, but I will have to do some test spinning.

Happy birthday Cary! I maintained my wheel last week, when i discovered your channel and last years preparation video. Mine is a Louet too, a 10C in Scotch tension. Being the rookie, i started practising with my southdown fibre yesterday, spinning singles that i will three ply tomorrow and wash it after a rest for knitting a swatch. My fibre is in a combed top hand dyed by a local artist. Oh, and i love Finn wool and Corriedale! Cant wait for next years spin along, to combine Huacaya with some Finn...but happy with my southdown this year! Will also knit toe up, always prefer. But found a pattern in the Jillian Moreno Yarnitecture, to have an orientation for the WPI i should try to reach and hence numbers... as you say...anyway it is sooo exciting.

Happy Birthday! I hope you have a good one & a great year ahead :) I'm still debating my fibres, but I do have some options! I have 2 different options where I have enough to spin for socks, either a commercial Corriedale top or some farm roving that's a sheep mix of Border Cheviot, Suffolk, and Rideau-Arcott. I've been spinning some of the farm roving already, and it's very lofty - I'm wondering if it might be better to try the commercial Corriedale for socks. But watching your videos (I'm moving through the back catalogue slowly) has made me very curious about trying a wool/alpaca blend! But that might need to wait until the next project.
As I'm spinning with drop spindles, I've checked the Respect the Spindle, and Fleece and Fiber Source Book out from my local library several times, but I haven't picked up any resource books for spinning just yet. I'd like to be entered into the draw, and if I don't win I'll see about tracking some down soon!

I am just starting to try spinning for socks to see if they last longer. Any tips would help!

@@mywoolmitten heels! Every time I knit with hand dyed yarns I swear I wear them a handful of times before they have holes in them, It's so frustrating. I don't know what I'm doing wrong my stitch gauge is usually right on

I’m watching this a day after it’s published, so happy belated birthday! Can anyone have too many books; not in my mind. How generous of you to offer these books. They are new to me. I do like Yarn.i.tec.ture by Moreno.
