I love this so much. Oda really outdid himself with characters like Iva and Bon-chan. The way he wrote these characters into real heroes instead of just being there for gags is one of the reasons One Piece is so special.

They did well with Ivankov’s voice. It’s high enough to pass for a woman, and deep enough to pass for a man, so it’s perfect for someone who seems to identify as both genders

This is my favourite scene in one piece, it's just so gutbustingly funny and I love that Bon-chan's dreams have come true in the form of this Frankenfurter-looking rectangular man-queen of a gay paradise in a prison modelled after hell. What a job the voice actor did as well, I've gotten used to the japanese dub for one piece but I prefer this VA for Ivankov by far.
I'm glad they kept Iva's pronounciation. It's rarely an issue with Funi, but I still worried they might change it to "eye-van" rather than "ee-van". Not sure I'm sold on the Yee Haw. I suppose I'll just have to wait and see how it sounds in other situations.

It says a lot that not one person in the Navy or the World Government is openly queer. That alone makes Bon Clay's 'They're all queer like me...' a big piece of world building, and shows how much he yearned for that freedom

I wasn't repulsed or scared, but I wasn't quite sure what my stance(s) with the queer community was just yet either. Now, having graduated from college, where I was acquainted with more than a few lesbian and bisexual women, and even transgender men (I even adopted Grell Sutcliff, a transgender woman in anime, as one of my role models for confidence and gender performance.), I can definitely say I would be a happy citizen in the Kamabakka Queendom among queer, and queer supporter, friends. Iva-sama, my regards to your fandom dad, Frank N. Furtur. I actually used you, and Grell Sutcliff, for reference when I was developing my own take on the character in a shadow cast production of RHPS I staged while still in college.
I thought they would gave it a more Tim Curry kind of voice from The Rocky Horror picture show, but it still good. Better then what they did to White Beard.
I don't know, he does do a good job at some parts, but for me, if you had no idea who is white beard and just listen to both the English dub and sub for the first time. Which one sounds like an aged huge pirate with a voice that's grand and tough at times, but also can sounds kind and gentle. For me the sub really puts more emotion to his voice, especially when he gets angry. Its a voice that says you don't want to screw with that pirate. EVER!
Justin Fones I don't watch subs, but i can personally never relate to the characters in any way if they're speaking Japanese. Because for all i know they could be talking gibberish. Not bashing their VA abilities I'm sure they're extremely professional, but the funimation WB sounds like the old man you do not wanna mess with, to me atleast.

I feel like this adds such an an important layer to Luffy. We see all these ideals that are not allowed to exist. People being free, newkama land (LGBTQ+), people free from slavery, etc. all of them are liberated by Luffy, who’s just a regular motherfucker who is willing to put his hands on anyone who tries to stop those others from existing. It’s so inspirational because any of us could be Luffy. When you see someone who just wants these simple things, you could knock out anyone that tries to stop it.
Not really at all, Luffy's NOT a hero character and Luffy knows it, he's a haro by accident and it's usually played off for laughs. He's pirate criminal and he knows what he is. He wants absolute freedom, but mainly for himself and his crew.
My biggest question is where in the world did they get all this ridiculous clothing in a prison? Did the prisoners from 5.5 meet Kin'emon before this scene took place?
Beauty of this scene is that you can read it in two ways. A) Either level 5.5 is "a paradise" that allows people an escape and respite from the torments of other layers, each modelled after different mythical "hell". Or B) it is a place where promise of carnality and confusion deludes people into staying inside their prison of fantasy, abandoning desire of leaving altogether, instead of seeking out the real world outside. So while masquerading as a piece of paradise, it really is hell just like the other layers and benefits the WG. Only Luffy's arrival shakes the people free from their self-serving lifestyle and releases them from false promise of hedonism.
That second interpretation is rather interesting, but I don’t think so. If we take your symbol, then consider the way that they arrive in the kingdom: Bon carries Luffy to it, then collapses and Ivankov brings him in. The comeradaly sense makes it feel like more of a “promised land” thing. Also, don’t forget that a good chunk of the residents are Revolutionary Army agents who canonically read the newspaper to keep updated.

Ha ha ha! I remember being mystified when I first read Ivankov's introduction in the manga when it first came out in Shonen Jump; it was right when I started high school too. I wasn't repulsed or scared, but I wasn't quite sure what my stance(s) with the queer community was just yet either. Now, having graduated from college, where I was acquainted with more than a few lesbian and bisexual women, and even transgender men (I even adopted Grell Sutcliff, a transgender woman in anime, as one of my role models for confidence and gender performance.), I can definitely say I would be a happy citizen in the Kamabakka Queendom among queer, and queer supporter, friends.
Iva-sama, my regards to your fandom dad, Frank N. Furtur. I actually used you, and Grell Sutcliff, for reference when I was developing my own take on the character in a shadow cast production of RHPS I staged while still in college.

I don't know, he does do a good job at some parts, but for me, if you had no idea who is white beard and just listen to both the English dub and sub for the first time. Which one sounds like an aged huge pirate with a voice that's grand and tough at times, but also can sounds kind and gentle. For me the sub really puts more emotion to his voice, especially when he gets angry. Its a voice that says you don't want to screw with that pirate. EVER!
Justin Fones I don't watch subs, but i can personally never relate to the characters in any way if they're speaking Japanese. Because for all i know they could be talking gibberish. Not bashing their VA abilities I'm sure they're extremely professional, but the funimation WB sounds like the old man you do not wanna mess with, to me atleast.
+Justin Fones To be fair, Whitebeard's only appearance in the dub thus far was during a time he was keeping up his Jerkass Façade. FUNimation hasn't gotten to the situation where his gentle side was shown. I'm sure they'll capture it just fine when the situation calls for it.

I feel like this adds such an an important layer to Luffy. We see all these ideals that are not allowed to exist. People being free, newkama land (LGBTQ+), people free from slavery, etc. all of them are liberated by Luffy, who’s just a regular motherfucker who is willing to put his hands on anyone who tries to stop those others from existing. It’s so inspirational because any of us could be Luffy. When you see someone who just wants these simple things, you could knock out anyone that tries to stop it.
Not really at all, Luffy's NOT a hero character and Luffy knows it, he's a haro by accident and it's usually played off for laughs. He's pirate criminal and he knows what he is. He wants absolute freedom, but mainly for himself and his crew.

Beauty of this scene is that you can read it in two ways.
A) Either level 5.5 is "a paradise" that allows people an escape and respite from the torments of other layers, each modelled after different mythical "hell".
Or B) it is a place where promise of carnality and confusion deludes people into staying inside their prison of fantasy, abandoning desire of leaving altogether, instead of seeking out the real world outside. So while masquerading as a piece of paradise, it really is hell just like the other layers and benefits the WG.
Only Luffy's arrival shakes the people free from their self-serving lifestyle and releases them from false promise of hedonism.
That second interpretation is rather interesting, but I don’t think so. If we take your symbol, then consider the way that they arrive in the kingdom: Bon carries Luffy to it, then collapses and Ivankov brings him in. The comeradaly sense makes it feel like more of a “promised land” thing.
Also, don’t forget that a good chunk of the residents are Revolutionary Army agents who canonically read the newspaper to keep updated.
