Glen Sherley that was in prison wrote this song. I know his Son. Johnny tried to help Glen. Even gave him a job. But Glen couldn't get adjusted to life. He ended up going back. When Johnny heard about it. Broke his heart. And spoke about it at next concert. But Glen wrote a beautiful song. RIP Johnny and Glen.

It’s one of my favorite songs. I can only imagine the other songs he wrote.. the way cashes band plays the song sounds like “will the circle be unbroken” I find that ironic in a way. Shirley became somewhat famous after prison, but got into trouble and ended up taking his life. Cash felt so bad about it and paid for his funeral

I had some bad health problems at 40....physical and mental. I hadn't played any music for more than 20 years. I started a choir and wrote some songs that the Pastor liked. I had had an earlier summer job in a youth prison....maximum security for teens who had been convicted of murder, rape, armed robbery, etc. They had a guy from a non-Christian religion who was coming in to teach them racist stuff. I started a ministry, and we visited their regularly. One time, around Christmas, I got to lead the kids in a call and response song I wrote called "Clap and Sing". It was the story of Palm Sunday. The kids picked it right up, and they clapped and sang beautifully. It was amazing! Here I was leading all these kids in this song, and the place was ROCKING! I told them...."all over this part of NY State, everybody's looking for where the action is...where the place is that things are happening.....and they'll never guess, IT'S RIGHT HERE in __________Prison!" They all cheered, it was great. I've been singing and playing ever since, in the Church and out. But that gig was as good as it gets!

Johnny thought he could reform Glen. But sadly, Glen was institutionalized and couldn't cut it on the outside. Johnny had given him a chance..and had him touring with him as a solo artist. Glen did okay for awhile..but then..he began talking crazy..about killing everyone in the band..including Johnny..so, Johnny had to let Glen go. Glen sank into a deep depression. He began using alcohol & drugs, and became practically homeless. Glen finally ended up committing suicide. Sad end to a talented singer/songwriter..who could have had it all..and did for awhile. But, his time at Folsom overtook Glen..and he was not able to successfully leave his past behind. RIP Glen Sherley

I think a big problem was how Cash went about it, in all honesty. He thought the world of Glen, really believing in him. According to those close to him, Glen was not so confident in himself.
