I saw this in the theatres and I will never forget the moment we realize the mom was executed. As soon as we saw the shoes the entire theatre collectively GASPED. You could hear sniffling coming from all over from everyone crying.
liar
spoil
I bet they did mate😢
I did smell onions on that scene, though I long suspected that was her end.
@@TonyDracon
Do you find it so unbelievable that people have emotions?
I feel like this movie is still underrated. It's absolutely incredible. You cut it out, but the kid talking about how only the Japanese are on their side and "between you and me, they don't look Aryan" is such a funny line.
Btw fun fact why the Sister is likely not known by public officials as dead. During the war it was common, though dangerous that families would often not report a family death so they can keep getting rations issued by the State. It got so bad at one point in the war, that the authorities literally would go door to door to make sure families didn't have "Too much" food, implying they're hording while others were starving.
"It took him over three weeks to get over the fact that his grandfather was not blonde" Excellent!
I saw this film in theaters right at the start of the pandemic in America by myself. There were 6 others in the theater. We all gasped when Jojo found his mother hanging and we all started crying. It was such a shock. I wasn't expecting such an emotional gutpunch, but what the hell was I thinking? Of course there was going to be one. This was the best movie of 2020, hands down.
Pandemic? oh you mean the cold?
I was always wondering why they showed Scarlett Johanson's feet. I thought it was a Quentin Tarantino foot fetish and then we saw her hanging. It made sad sense after that.
This is one of my all time favorite movies. So incredibly written and so emotional. Laughing one minute and crying like a baby the next.
Sam Rockwell, and Taika Waititi killed it in this movie!🤣
Scarlett Johansson won an oscar for her role in this movie.
@@tileux
She deserved it!
@@tileux She didnt win the Oscar, she was nominated Laura Denn win that year,
Sam Rockwell probably already knew his mother was executed, that is why he told JoJo to stay home and protect his "sister".
Indeed! He probably saw her hanging in the town square and hurried over to check on JoJo. That is also why the Gestapo was searching the house at that moment for leads on other resistance members.
We saw this in the cinema when it came out and this is still one of the best films I have seen. There are few little details I missed first time. Captain K rushed over with Finkel when they heard about Jojos mother hence why he told them to stay inside for a few days so they would not see the body, plus knew the truth about Jojos sister. I believe Captain K was a career soldier having been serving before the nazis came about and did not agree with the politics (hence some of his comments and reactions to stuff going on around him like the book burning) I believe Captain K and Finkel were lovers and the last time you see them together they had pink triangle badges on which is what the nazis marked gay people with. The last time you see Captain K it is Finkels cloak that he is holding. But of course at the end he saves Jojo from being executed.
Yes! I love Captain K. When we first meet him and he is talking to the jugend he explains that he lost his eye in a attack that could have been prevented. So it's clear how disappointed he is of the people in charge. So yes, he is a competent soldier and he got injured because of incompetent Nazi leadership. And then he probably quickly realized that his relationship with Finkel wouldn't be accepted. So I guess he feels trapped between loyalty to the military and love for his partner. And so he stays and try to do as little as possible that would actually harm people (while probably feeling guilty for not speaking up or fighting against the Nazis, like Rosie and her husband). I believe that he knew all along that Rosie was involved with the resistance movement but chose to do nothing about it. Although he couldn't stop the gestapo from killing her, he did what he could to protect Jojo, out a mixture of compassion and guilt. Such a deeply flawed character, with so many layers, just like the movie. Sam Rockwell played him so well. One of my absolute favorite movie characters 😊
This is the kind of movie that rewards viewers who pay attention to the details. My favorite kind of film.
He promised to look after him while she was away and he did, right until the end.
I am an American and I was studying in Austria when this came out. It was so interesting to see what parts my American friends reacted to/laughed at compared to the German-speaking audience. An amazing cinema experience.
What were the differences? Seems an interesting thing to notice^^
Austrians still behave like it was not them
@@sobrevalorado It is a part of their history they are not proud of, can you blame them for trying to ignore it?
Took my 18 year old daughter to Jojo Rabbit. When the closing credits started, she stood up. I asked her to sit down. Nobody walks out on David Bowie.

Lia is just sitting there like:
These chicks have no idea where meat comes from.

The ability of Taiki Watiti to mix horror with comedy is only rivaled by James Gunn.
Also that horror/comedy or what I would say is more Tragedy/comedy is a large element I see show up in so many New Zealand/Kiwi headed films. I’m not sure what it is about our culture or why it is that we enjoy films like that or making films like that, but it is something so common that I feel like must reflect on some belief in our culture, I just haven’t been able to quite pin point what it is. Maybe that life is a mixed bag and you’ve just got to make the most of it the dark and the light the joy and the pain they often don’t come separately, so live it all richly that’s what makes the important moments powerful. But I don’t even know if that’s what it is.
All I do know is that there’s some quotes that Taika made that I love so much about the way comedy plays with tragedy: “My favourite kind of comedy comes from the awkwardness of living, the stuff that makes you cringe but borders on tragic - that is more interesting to me. It resonates; it comes from emotional truth.”
“I want to explore the painful comedy of growing up and interpreting the world. I believe that through all our faults and inadequacies, through all the pain and heartache there is still room to laugh”
“When the atmosphere is tense and uncomfortable, that is when we feel the need to laugh most. The sort of humour I prefer and write comes from finding the lighter side of tragic”
and a quote Lisa Perrott said about Taika saying, “Taika Waititi illuminates the emotional complexities of human beings, and that is is a humour that enables us to laugh at ourselves and to discern warmth and poignancy in the imperfections, fallibles and growing pains that make us human.”
And I think all of these quotes are something I would say about kiwi humour in general. The humour needs to come from a place of reality for it to really sink home and that reality gives weight to the joy, the hope and the laughter. Tragedy is what makes humour powerful.
"shittler" was a Great joke 😂😂😂
Once the film started with the Beatles singing in German, I was hooked!
The book it's based on, Caging Skies, is just as good but very, very different. It's much darker. Worth a read but don't go in expecting JoJo Rabbit!
The director, Taika Waititi (who is also playing Hitler and is the director, narrator/voice of Korg in Thor, Love and Thunder) is part Jewish himself, just as Scarlett Johansson has a Danish father and an American mother of Jewish-Polish ancestry, so she has dual Danish-American citizenship. The Jewish-Polish side of her family really suffered during the war, while the Danish Jews never wore the Yellow Star identification mark, just as the Danes saved all their Jews from the extermination camps, though at the end 464 Jews were captured by the Germans and sent to the Theresienstadt Ghetto and concentration camp, but with the Germans accepting visit from the Danish Red Cross to monitor their health and packages of food and medicine to be sent to all the Danish prisoners, also persuading the Germans not to deport any Danish Jews to extermination camps. So, she knows this part of history very well, which made her perfect for this role.
this movie hits different... there's a big lesson there and the story is well thought
Unquestionably should have won the Oscar.
Sam Rockwell was in Iron Man 2 & Alfie Allen was in GoT.
Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson, Stephen Merchant, Rebel Wilson, Alfie Allen & Taika Waititi were great. The actors for Jojo, Elsa & Yorki were amazing.
Sam Rockwell was also in The Green Mile, which the ladies loved ❤
Alfie was also in the first John Wick.
A comedy that turns real quick in to a drama... waiting for the reaction of THAT scene
Hitler is played by the Taika Waititi. He's also the director. He directed Thor Ragnorok and What We Do In the Shadows.
One of my favorite movies of all time. And a movie everyone should watch!
“NO STABBING!!” is my favorite part of this film. After our main characters personal growth, of course.
That line was delivered with such vehemence!👍
There are many notable things about this movie, but I'll lead with Taika, who wrote, directed and played Hitler, is actually jewish.
The gestapo are played like they're idiots, which they were, but they were also cold blooded torturers and murderers and it was literally life and death for jews and anyone else who didn't meet their blind fanaticism.
This was a really thoughtful reaction! Thank you for taking the time to appreciate this brilliant movie. As for Jojo's father, I don't think he was a Jew--they would know that due to the family history (they government would go back multiple generations just to check) and if he was, then Jojo would have most likely been rounded up sadly. I think he was in the resistance and for men of his age--he had to leave to go to war with the German army. Interestingly, the bullies from the camp said, no one has heard from Jojo's father in months, so he must have fled and is working to ferry Jews and others safely into sanctuary zones or is a freedom fighter in a guerilla militia fighting against the regime. Either way, there's no way that a man who has deserted his country's war effort to actively fight against it would be welcome back and his presence would have put his family in danger.
The actor who played imaginary Hitler was also the director...who also directed the Thor movies. Funny thing is, he deliberately made sure each uniform his character wears is time appropriate, but also intentionally had no intention of playing the part accurately figuring all he wanted to do was parody the asshole. So Hitler was vegetarian but is portrayed eating a unicorn. Same with the smoking...Hitler didn't smoke. So the UNIFORMS were accurate, but the personality wasn't and that is how he wanted it.
Imaginary Hitler's personality was what Jojo imagined Hitler's personality was. There was no way Jojo would have had any knowledge of Hitler's real personality, so he just filled in the blanks with his own imagination. That's why imaginary Hitler's personality differed from real Hitler's perspnality.
And Taika wrote it too. Masterful
You need to watch "What We Do In The Shadows"
Is a hilarious mockumentary from Taika Waititi about vampires
[JoJo] What did they do?
[Mom] What they could.
What did they do?
What they could.
Look after my Rosie, she's doing what she can.
Captain K was played by Sam Rockwell he also played Wild Bill Wharton in the green mile.
The book burnings really happened. But not in lonesome scout camps in the middle of nowhere. The books were burned on big public squares in cities. Those were books of all kind of people, who the Nazis didn't like. Especially Jews, of course.
The famous WWI anti war book "All Quiet On The Western Front", where the latest movie version just came out, was burned on that way, too.
"From the title it should be something really sweet".....Oh, you sweet summer child!
I thought something similar. Watch out for the butterfly!
❤Great reaction. Beautiful movie with the absurdity in the movie pointing to the absurdity of numerous points, ie; war, hate, blind fanaticism, etc. THANKS and CHEERS! 🥂🤗😘
PS- Taika Waititi played hitler and directed the movie. He directed the last two Thors :)
What I love about this movie is how they make Nazis absolutely ridiculous, and then remind you that they were/are monsters.
The bright colours everywhere:
People actually dressed that way back then. You couldn't tell from the black and white footage, but bright and cheery colours were in fashion back then.
38:44 the panzerschreck part was so funny
The repeated “Hiel Hitlers” are funny… until Elsa has to do it, and it suddenly isn’t.
That dog Is a deep sleeper.
Where are these women from? I can't identify the accent.
This movie is just amazing. I don't think I've ever met someone who isn't touched when they see it. Taika Watiti is a genius.
You should be able to see the country of origin of RUclips channel by clicking on the icon for the channel and going to the About tab. In this case it says Bulgaria.
@@paulkennedy8701 Thanks I didn't know that.
This film is polarising for many in terms of a comedic light hearted tone for something so serious.
Thing is, the source material it’s based on is serious as you’d expect, and Taika Waititi isn’t one for grim movies.
But as a result it pretty accurately depicts how being in the Hitler Youth must’ve felt for a child growing up knowing nothing else other than the soldiers everywhere being heroes, and the promise that the Nazi Party was going to make him and the German people better, it was all one gigantic national brainwash, and the film deciding to break it to him the reality of what was going on, is probably how it was for numerous young kids.
Great film with great performances!
Awwwwwwww the puppppyyyyyyyyyyyyy😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
9:54 - Yes, Hitler Youth Camps were real.
i was waiting for this one i’m so happy u reacted to this. is one of my favourite movies about WW2. Love your reactions ❤️
You guys should also watch “The Boy In the Striped Pajamas”, “Valkyrie”, “The Pianist”, and “Inglorious Basterds”. They are all stories about moments during WWII. The Pianist, like Schindler’s List, is based on a true story. They are all great movies. Sad, but great.
Also "Life is Beautiful."
You forget American History X...Very important.
@@OrAngeAnArchy
That wasn't set during WW2...
@@elbruces lol, sorry, didnt read the last sentence :P
Valkyrie is totally unrealistic, as is Inglorious Basterds. Any SF commander whose mission went awry in a tavern like in Ing Bas would have aborted the mission straight away. Crap movie.
Sorry!
Cheers!
Captain K didn’t turn in JoJo because he was trying to protect his secret - being a homosexual, who were also targeted by the Nazis.
Empathetic, intelligent reaction from you four ladies. Great reaction. Thank you.
Excited to watch this reaction! I may actually join Patreon for this one lol
@The Homies - You girls wouldn´t be so confused, if you didn´t talk over 80% OF THE DIALOGUE IN EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THE MOVIES YOU WATCH... Just saying.
You asked, if those camps for the Nazi boy scouts really existed. Yes, they did. Of course not in the ridiculous manner like shown in this movie, but similar. The boy scouts were called Hitlerjugend (Hitler Youth).
02:46 you probably know him from The Green Mile, he was one of the inmates.
Wild Bill no? The gross one.
This movie is based on the book Caged Skies by Christine Leunens a Belgian/NZ author whose grandfather spent time in Nazi Labor Camps. This movie is movie sublime in its brilliance, such a mesh of tragedy, whimsy, horror and hope. To balance so perfectly vilifying the atrocity which is Nazism and also show the quiet courage of those who did resist
Almost no one knows that the book is WAAAAAAY different. It's not sweet. It's somewhat disturbing.
sees this upload....immediately fast fowards to find the 'shoes' scene. you ladies are awesome.
Amazing movie. Makes you feel all the feels 🤩🏆🥲
You're sleeping puppy is so dang adorable 😍🥺
Ellie: From the title I guess it should be something pretty sweet!
Me: Well yes but actually no.
Taika Waititi is what crack smokes!
Ellie has had a bit too much coffee 😅
2:48 his name is sam rockwell hes from the green mile
2:48: You recognize him from Iron Man 2.
Actually, the german guy is Sam Rockwell, the actor who played ``Wild Bill``, in ``The Green Mile``
sam rockwell perhaps your girls remember him as billy the kid in the green mile
Great reactions to the very well made film Jojo Rabbit, Lis, Ellie, Michelle, & Viki!!!🎬👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽You ladies all look lovely!♥
"they're trying to erase Jewish history."
"ohhhhh how cute"
hahahaha
You know "Captain K" as "Wild Bill" in "The Green Mile"!
And Guy Fleegman in Galaxy Quest. He always knocks it out of the park in his roles.

I think he's one of the best too! I was only sure of that one being on here. I noticed him when he played the host of the "Gong Show". Then "Hitch Hiker's Guide...". Great actor.
Brilliant movie. Very deep, comical and tragic
I knew once you've understood this film you girls would love it(.01%film)! Lia, your color scheme with your outfits in recent videos is next level (long black hair, beautiful dark eyes, that sweater's color and look complained how overly cute you really are, oh, nice touch with the pink pants 🌚🌹😍💯!
Great reaction Homies Girls!
The Mom's Shoes scene 😢😢😢
some of the best satire I've ever seen, and this shit made me cry : ).
34:35 that's why her shoes were shot so much
Perhaps you saw him in something else as well, but Sam Rockwell (Captain K) played Wild Bill in The Green Mile
Omg I've been wanting you girls to react to this movie for a long long time! Is a masterpiece. So good😄🔥🔥🔥🔥👏👏👏👏
This is way better than RAGNAROK and LOVE AND THUNDER
Not better then ragnarok, but better then love and thunder then yes.
Going by the premise of this movie, I pity the little German kid who might have had Martin Bormann or Heinrich Himmler as their imaginary friends. lol
I recommend you girls react to the Johnny English and Austin Powers movies because they are hilarious. Also they were meant to be parodies of James Bond
You saw 'Captain K' (Sam Rockwell) before in 'The Green Mile', he was Wild Bill on death row.
Love these reactions. You guys are quite funny, and very entertaining to watch. Keep up the great work. Also, can you guys react to The Warriors (1979)? its a really good movie.
I've never seen this channel before -- the redhead girl has a great sense of humor
Great movie. The Hitler Youth was definitely real and German women were encouraged to have as many kids as possible.
You guys were asking where you saw Sam Rockwell before, well maybe you're thinking of Green Mile, which at least some of you reacted to (I know that Michelle reacted to it).
Alternative title : Lapdogs being cute for 50 minutes straight 🐶🐕😅 btw love this movie , it really is special ..kinda parody but based on real events of brainwashing inside Hitlerjugend .. basically it is seen by little boy eyes , pretty similar to much darker ,,The Boy in the Striped Pajamas'' which i also really recommend to watch .
Nia is the prettiest. Ellie is a fave
I don't think they understand WW2.
Sam Rockwell was in The Green Mile played Wild Bill. Peace out.
7:27 lol @ Michelle's expression. :)
I was genuinely upset for the rest of the day when I saw what happened with the mom... great movie.

Notice the music. Beatles, Bowie in german.
And Tom Waits.
8:11: Imaginary Hitler is the director, Taika Waititi.
I was waiting for the moment when hes mom got hangede reaction ..... ;) That was the SADEST moment of the movie !
Yes the Hitler Youth was real
The real HJ put up allot of fights down to the last man, especially in Breslau

My favorite movie of 2019! Warning: Don't read the book the movie was based on. It's a great book, but much, MUCH darker with a VERY different conclusion.
Did Micha just reference Allo Allo?
The guy that plays Hitler in this movie is from my country. A New Zealander Maori
please react to the tv show (wednesday) you'll love it its amazing!!!
