The bit with the captain and Freddy wearing their custom uniforms really stands out to me, they've both got pink triangles on their uniforms that the Nazis used to put on gay people who were shipped to the camps. So it was definitely them being out and proud in their last moments.

I saw this film in theaters right before quarantine by literally a month. People were still cautious so It was me and 2 other people in the theater. It was a couple, and like them, I didn't really know what I was getting into. Afterwards, I turned to them and both were in the sad/happy emotional state I was and I said "Do you want to get a drink?" We went to a bar and discussed this movie for over 2 hours. "Why are they showing just her feet?" Oh man, when you said that, I was "Just wait." When that reveal happens, I don't blame you two. I lost it too first time I saw this. Without doubt, one of the greatest films I've seen. Masterclass of writing (sooo damn funny and next scene your eyes are like waterfalls), directing and acting by ALL the cast. ScarJo is amazing as always, Rebel Wilson is hilarious (as is Taika), the kids were awesome, and Sam Rockwell is fantastic. Glowing 10/10 film.

    Rosie: "What they could."
Rosie (as Papa Lion): "Take care of my Rosie. She's doing what she can."

This movie has so much heart and somehow manages to balance the comedy and seriousness of what was going on during this time in history. Really brilliant movie... There was a fine line they couldn't cross when making fun of certain things, but they never did. Saw this last year and it's one of my favorite movies out there. Also, Jojo's mom said she never looked a tiger in the eye? That's not true, she looked the Nazi regime (tiger) in the eye trying to help people. The guy that covered for Jojo and the Jewish girl knew something happened to the mother, so he rushed over there after he found her bike without her. When he comes in the door, you can see it with him. He came to cover for them and to protect her kid not knowing about the Jewish girl. You could see the surprise on his face seeing her for the first time.
Edit: I was like you both as well at the start of the movie! I had no idea what the movie was truly about and when I saw swastikas and AH, I was in absolute shock. But the storytelling was perfect and this was written by the actor that played AH (Taika Waititi). He wanted to see a movie from a kid's perspective, because he had never seen a film like that.

and kudos for being so perceptive and noticing the little nuances, that the "gay nazi" was, in fact, gay, and told him to "stay home and take care of his family" because he already knew
FYI: unlike the SS or SA or other....installments, where you actively applied and went in voluntarily, the Hitler Youth wasn't an option. Neither was the "Volkssturm" ("people storm") at the end of the war, where they literally forced octogenerians and young kids to fight a losing fight at gun point, especially in the big cities like Berlin, Russians and Americans already bombing and shooting their way through.

I would like to also state, as a former Jewish refugee who came to the US out of political asylum and has this history...my favorite aspect of this film was the character Elsa. In Holocaust related cinema and storytelling, it is not often that Jewish people are highlighted as fully fleshed out characters. Rather, it is mainly focused from the perspective of the "righteaous gentile" narrative. And when doing this, especially with such traumatic generational trauma as the Shoah for us, what gets lost are the Jewish characters. We get often put into the backseat of our own stories. We are at worse, window dressing and are just seen as these souls of perpetual suffering without showcasing anything deeper than a characature.
Why I love Shoah films like Jojo Rabbit, 1945, Iti Smotri or Come and See (an amazing foreign film I highly reccomend), The Book Thief, Defiance, and The Grey Zone (and Hunters TV series) are that you see Jewish characters as complex, messy, and outwardly human. These are other works I highly reccomend.
Elsa is one of my favorite Jewish characters in Shoah films because she subverts EVERYTHING Jojo is taught Jewish people to be. She is a strong, stubborn, intelligent, cunning, beautiful 17 year old girl who is artistic and doesn't allow him to put her in a box of what antisemitic rhetoric tells him to believe. She has obviously had severe trauma losing all her family and her fiance but at the same time has such a strong ability to hope. She doesn't let Jojo's bigoted and limited views throughout the film take away her humanity. And in doing so teaches him all the rhetoric were lies.
I truly love this film so much and I really enoyed your reaction! I hope you consider some of the above reccomendations I shared. Thank you for the beautiful video and have a beautiful day!

That was a serious gut punch when the mom's feet was shown hanging. And another punch when Jojo cannot untie her shoes to remember her by.
Anyway, if you want another emotional war effects on the perspective of children, try watching Grave of the Fireflies. It's an anime and it's good.

One of the best films I have ever seen. We saw it in the cinema and the scene where you see Rosies shoes everyone just went quiet, everyone was stunned. There are so many details in this film, for example the propaganda you see was based on real stuff that was used at the time. Also the final scene where you see Captain Klenzendorf the cloak he is holding was the one that Finkel had been wearing earlier. They were a couple although it was illegal at that time. There are so many little details in this film that make it brilliant, Taika is a genius and all the cast were amazing.

I love the bit where captain K says to Elsa "get that photo changed. You look like a ghost" - which is a clear reference to her not looking like the dead Inge and him showing he knows.
Pow. I love seeing people react to the shoe scene after the blue butterfly scene - but your reaction was particularly moving.
If you want to see another movie about german kids at the end of ww2, then try Lore - great film but not comedy. Weirdly, Lore is directed by an Australian. So both this film and Lore are from Down Under.

The camp the boys went to were real. My Opa and uncles were sent there. At meals, there was a clipboard with a piece of paper on it. An officer would walk up and down watching to see who put their names on it and who didn't. This is how my uncle's "volunteered". They thought they were signing an attendance sheet. My Opa refused to sign. At the end of the camp, the boys who signed went home, while the boys who didn't were sent to another camp, for reeducation to be good Germans. People forget that the first country the Nazis invaded was Germany.

You're the first reactors to really recognize that this is the war through Jo Jo's eyes. My mother was born and raised in Nazi Germany, and she was Jo Jo's age at the end. My Grandfather was conscripted into the Wehrmacht and never came home. To this day my mother says that the happiest day of her life was when the American tanks rolled into town - just as we see at the end of the movie.
I'm proud of my German heritage - in part because they were among those who didn't want to be Nazis. But also so very sad at what they wrought against the world and all of the people.
But I am American too, and I fell in love with an American girl who I met in Germany - when I was a soldier there myself. But she just so happens to be of Jewish heritage! Funny how things work out...

As a Kiwi, this is a favourite & that scene, well I had the same reaction, I kept hoping it wasn't her...but my favourite Taika movie is 'Boy', it's a very Kiwi movie so not sure it's up your alley, but it has the same heart & the same moment, althought not so shocking. He makes 'Happy/Sad' movies, that pretend (maybe not the rigft word) to be comdedies but have a very sad/tragic moment, that is soul destroying for us watching from the outside, maybe because it hits too close to home in some respects, but is always a major moment for the main character and their development. His film 'Eagle vs Shark' is very indie, but bloody funny (until you realise what really happened to his brother) but thats Taika, happy/sad movies. Love your channel so much, you always make me smile. Take care, Arohanui

In regards to Jojo being in the training group...this was common at the time because after WWI Germany had signed a bill preventing them from building a proper military so Hitler made up "training/exercise camps" instead. By having camps for kids he made himself seem like more of a savior to the German people because he made sure the kids had at least one meal a day at a time when Germans were starving, nationwide. Jojo kept saying that he was ugly because Hitler had brainwashed the Germans to discriminate against the the deformed, the homosexual, and the disabled. He was afraid that his "hero" would not like him because of his scars.

    • @jesses5463
      @jesses5463 9 месяцев назад

These ideas were not unique to Germans (or nazis) though. Allies: UK, US, and Russia all discriminated against homosexuals. Margaret Sanger, who is a considered a visionary and hero to many modern day American politicians believed in discrimination against deformed and disabled, and it's not like her views are without validity.
