After spending some years in Eurorack and eventually selling most of it off in frustration, I found the 0-Coast to be an absolute pleasure to work in.

I took out my 0-Coast/O-Ctrl set this morning and then found your latest upload! I also store gear and forget about it, and then it's like a "new" acquisition to approach from a different angle. Every time I set up a patch with the 0-Coast, I realize how nice it sounds with overdrive, fuzz, and just about any effect pedal, which is no doubt du to all the harmonic overtone and wave multiplier controls! I also really like the layout and general, intuitive workflow of this synth; it's just pleasant to use, and so is the O-Ctrl!

My 0-Coast arrived today. I am late to the game and this is my first synth-coming to this after a life of guitar. My Lord, I had fun with it through my effects pedals. I can’t even imagine what it will be like when the 0-CTRL and Strega I have ordered turn up. So good.

The 0-Coast is amazing bang for the buck! I love mine too. Easy to use, years of depth to explore, and sounds not only great, but unique. For roughly the same money as a eurorack complex oscillator, the 0-Coast IS a complex oscillator, + a contour generator, slope generator, low pass filter, and has functionality for attenuverters/mixing, wave folding, and midi/cv translations (and that's all before you start getting really creative with it!). Such a great stand alone synth, or powerful blend with a eurorack system.

Had mine for over five years now. Such a versatile piece of kit. Very easy to fall down the rabbit-hole, especially with some additional modulation sources. I do love its self-generating capability such as the (in)famous Krell patch - always my go-to when trying something new I guess. last January the 0 coast got me into the semi modular hardware synth world..
2,5 months later and here i am with a eurorack system build around the 0-coast. (quad LFO) (quad attenuator) (100grit distfilt)
i agree that its a good starting point for eurorack, especially if you dont really know what you want or where to go with youre modular idea or plan.
the 0 coast just has its all and let you explore with baby steps into the modular world, wich is a good thing.
I do not see myself selling the 0 coast, i think im gonna keep expanding on it.

3 reasons to not quite love the 0 Coast: 1) No power button/switch on the unit itself. 2) the MIDI/"program" UI (hold this button then tap that button then stand on your right leg while winking your left eye) is very off-putting. 3) That's the envelope, that's a function, that's a wavefolder and that's a attenusplitter utility. No need to give them fancy new brandnames.

    • @g3cd

I sold mine because I learned with it that "modular is not for me" (well, yet). Instead I got the Norand Mono which is much more controllable, has an LFO for every single knob and actually stores settings instead of forgetting them, making it possible to return later to a sound you designed, which is utterly impossible with the O-Coast as its controls are soooo sensitive ... look at it the wrong way and it changed a hard-earned sound completely (while the Norand even has an undo button).

  • @jc3drums916
    @jc3drums916 2 года назад +1

I love the 0-Coast. I really appreciate how versatile its individual "modules" are, esp. how the Oscillator isn't the only possible audio source. The only downers for me are the lack of 1/4" output (minor issue, but still), and especially that there is no audio input or output in the Overtone & Multiply section. Also, the menu system is rather annoying, but I guess it kept costs down while also retaining a quasi-retro, all-analogue appearance.
2:26 All they did was change the wording of the Contour section, clearly a Minimoog-inspired EG. Slope is more than just an LFO, but there are also the triangle and square LFOs that can output from the jacks in the lower left corner.

Hey bro, nice work. Its seems, looking at comments below, 0-coast is a devisive machine. Are you familiar with the " Bob Ross effect"? This machine has it in spades. Its a symphony of experiment and musicallity. I went and followed it up with 0-control and strega. Its a unique collabaration thats proved to be mystical and amazing. Of course with loads of reverb. Nice to hear someone else loving this beautiful instrument. I feel it's sort of getting forgotten. Super lovely paired with a 0-CTRL.
Given you asked about other synths that we think you would enjoy; these are my four -
1 - another synth straddling the east and west coast experiences, the Pittsburgh Modular Microvolt 3900.
2 - going for a super small form factor interesting semi-modular, either of the Rare Waves Grendel Grenadiers (RA-9 or the newer RA-99); great formant synthesis. I bought the RA-99 even though I had teh RA-9. They are just different enough to be deisrable in their own right.
3 - the Moog Subharmonicon for polyrhythmic sub-oscillation goodness; oh my is this synth deep
4 - and I'd be remiss not to mention something from Analogue Solutions. I love their Impulse Command for immediacy of its sequencing capabilities combined with the filter... (I also have the Fusebox as well, but the Impulse Command is more immediately satisfying, the Fusebox is deeper in sound design IMHO.)

I've been coveting a ∅-Coast for years. My only "serious" synth is a Minibrute 2S, which I enjoy a lot, and I'm slowly building a modular setup mostly of my own homebrew modules, but Make Noise's aesthetic and sound are something I'd love to be able to afford.
I don't think a detent for C on the frequency knob of an analog oscillator is really an achievable thing; digital oscillators can take advantage of the advances in computer technology over the last few decades, but analog stuff is always going to be subject to things like part tolerances, temperature drift, and aging - and a notch that, a year out, settles into being 50 cents flat would be worse than no notch at all.

"Uncontrollable" is actually the word why I sold my O-Coast. I never understood what the cables did, I could never replicate any presets and the manual only lists a handful of MIDI values. While the O-Coast could do some nasty sounds very quickly, I found the overall experience very frustrating. I now have the Norand Mono which can be as nasty and weird, but is totally translucent and controllable.

2:55 Right again! The lack of common labels creates those Bob Ross "happy mistakes".
Because of its huge patch bay and a dedicated signal chain and volume fader for an external osc., Arturia's MiniBrute 2S pairs with the 0-Coast _beautifully._
Finally, something I've been wondering about the 0-Coast: 🤔How well would TWO of these work together? 🤯One day. I'll get the Strega first though. 🤣

As for me I sold my 0-coast after 3 months.
The 0-coast is able to produce a lot of very weird sound ... yes ... but the Soma Lyra does it much better. I found just a few "sweeties" when trying to get familiar with the 0-coast (whereas the successor Hydrasynth Desktop is a nearly endless source of sonic). When using patches it was sometimes just to small to turn the knobs (maybe my fingers are too thick 🖐) but it works fine and better structured with a Moog Mother-32 or Subharmonicon).
I guess you like the 0-coast or you don't (somehow like some brands of fountain pens 😉, some are overhyped and some are just beautiful writers).

Useful feedback. I go back and forth with this synth (whether I want to add it to my collection) but I rarely think about some valid points you mentioned...and I have a lyra which I love so maybe I've got enough "weird" (especially since I will be adding the Habit for sure).

    • @commodoor6549
      @commodoor6549 2 года назад

I own both, and the Lyra is a fun toy, but it's just too unpredictable in my work flow. If I'm not trying to do anything specific and just letting the Lyra take me away, I'm happy with the Lyra. Sometimes I get lucky... but mostly I end up asking myself why I don't sell it. I did use the Lyra a lot for a while for droning, but some months ago I got the Lemondrop, and it, IMO, is more straight forward than the Lyra, and it's easier to get great sounds with it's presets. I think for the price, the Lyra is an expensive experimental tool. The 0-Coast on the other hand is instant productivity. Great sounds that pays off when you tweak it for something slightly different. I think if you're more experimental, not trying to satisfy clients, the Lyra is for you. If you're on a deadline and trying to find something that works, you can't go wrong with the 0-Coast, especially at its price point.

Then you should be able to buy the Microfreak right when the 0-Coast arrieves, regardless of your income ;) Seriously though, this depends on what you already own and even then it‘s a tough question to answer, because both are amazing.

@@FretchGaming Nah I dont want both. I think the micro freak may be more my thing. Or maybe just not buying anything.

Hi! How is it compared to Korg's Volca Modular? Not touching VM's limited wavefolder...

So helpful to get your thoughts, especially based on long term experience. Would love to know your thoughts on the new Pittsburg Modular designed East Beast and West Pest.

@@MidlifeSynthesist Thanks! And wondering if you have a personal preference between the Keystep and the 0-Ctrl as a CV controller for the 0-Coast?

    • @christopher_ecclestone

@@gkillmaster I can definitely recommended the 0-Ctrl. I have an original keystep too which is great for more standard playing, but for experimenting, versatility and fun, the 0-Ctrl is amazing. I use it with most of my cv controllable synths now. I don't know of anything else quite like it. However, as a less expensive option, the Korg SQ-1 works really well with 0-Coast, you don't even need a midi adapter with it to control midi on 0-Coast, and then you still have 2 lanes of cv and gate to use for control. I'd recommend it over the Keystep for use with the 0-Coast.
If you look on RUclips, Make Noise did some really good 0-Coast>SQ-1 demos.
