- in todays video we are going to be explaining where dairy bull calves go here in Ireland in the defence of agriculture, we will be explaining how the dairy farmer minds their bull calves with the help of Emma and I will be explaining a bit about our setup at home and how we manage our calves before giving a very generalised overview to a dairy bull beef system that is common in Ireland, finally finishing the video by covering some hot topics, busting a few myths and signing off

Great topic to cover Philip, all our bull calves are sold to farmers all over Ireland to be raised on there farms, I get pictures sent to me as there growing, I always check up on how there doing every 6 months or so. Like most we take pride in our animals and there welfare. Well done lad 👏👏👍👍

Good man Phil , I am sick of the bull about dairy bull calves on the Internet, in fact very few dairy bull calves have any jersey in them and the high ebi calves tend to be good thick Cattle, the same lad has been buying our calves for years and reckons that between the calves getting better for beef and him getting better at rearing them he has an extra 30 kg of carcass over what he sold just five years ago, he told me that last year out of 254 calves he lost 3 and one of them committed suicide by hanging himself in the fork of a tree. I reckon that is a credit to the lads he buys off for giving them a good start and him as a stockman for looking after them well, he does all bullocks and sends them for slaughtering at about 30 months he brings in about 100 calves before Christmas and the rest in February March , that way he spreads the workload and has cattle to go spring and early summer and autumn early winter which spreads his risk a bit and helps cash flow, we needed this video to put the record straight and to let the general public know the truth anyway anyone that abuses their stock won't do so for long as it is the quickest way to go broke,you don't look after them they won't look after you its that simple!

I was just talking to an "animal recovery" man just a few moments ago, and I was asking him about Bobby calf's, and he said, it was common enough 20+ years ago, but with education, sex semen, bigger export market and better money for them its a rare sight to be seen now. The calf market to going to increase even more since a lot of young beef farmers are dipping there toes in the dairy sector as an added income. Brilliant video Phil, looking forward to Part 2.
There was definitely no bobby calf’s 20 years ago because dairy cow numbers were relatively low because of milk quotas , in my opinion any farmer who doesn’t care properly for a baby calf shouldn’t be issued with a herd number to keep cattle .
@@ethanearle9457 I don’t know where you’re from, but I’m afraid you’re wrong. “Bobby” actually comes about, because that is all you were able to get for a Bobby calf in the early days, one bob. I have some of my grandfathers diaries that he wrote everything he earned annually in. They go back to the early 1930’s, and yes there is income from Bobby calves in them.

@ he said there were no Bobby calves 20 years ago. I’m saying that Bobby calves were being sent in the 1930’s. So YES there were. Also considering we bought our first farm in 1988, and we’re sending Bobby calves then as well, would suggest that Bobby calves were around long before 20 years ago. Read All of the posts properly.

excellent video. well done to Phil and Emma for explaining the system of dairy beef. I do know that the vast majority of farmers care for their stock and bring on the best possible animals. There are rules and regs and most of them follow it, but , as in life, there are those who don't follow the rules. The feeding thing is a bit like horses - you make a routine and feed and exercise at the same time every day and you get a calm and responsive animal.

Good Video Phil. A point about vegans! you showed irish farming practices and farmers and committed to animal welfare and dispelled some myths....don't prejudice an entire group so to speak and educate yourself. Some on here are cheering that sentiment, while shouting "you tell those vegan b******s!". I'm from a farming background,I eat meat,my partner is vegan. She is not throwing rocks at cattle trucks or whatever myth you might hear. She is not an activist. She just made a choice about what she eats. In the spirit of the video I suggest those people keep an open mind about vegans. An "us vs them" attitude is counter productive

Well it depends on what the cows are my beef cows have a strict guidelines to stay in the herd they have to calve unassisted, come when I call, breed back fast and hold a good condition and raise a good calf. We don't want any cows that don't want to be here if they act an ass they get the bus ride to town. We have cows that have lost there calves especially the cows we have raised if they can't find them they come to the barn and ball till you come out there and you can figure out what they want real quick by the way they are acting. We had a heifer who couldn't deliver a calf and she came to the pen and laid down and we found her checking the cows pulled the calf both did good and she has never missed a beat since. I know here you can't make enough money buying bottle calves unless they are good beef calves but I'm glad to see you are making money with them all the breeds have a purpose and need to be used properly and with care for the animals. The extremists say you need to turn it out let it be in nature well have you ever watched an alligator grab a calf or a lion get his meal for the day I think feed everyday and nice fenced in area to grow into a size for harvest is a lot nicer to the animal then being chased down and hunted in nature 🤣🤣🤣🤣 why they don't see how sad it is to rip harmless lettuce and carrots out of the ground just to chop them up and slaughter those precious green lives is beyond me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

45 years ago we use to dairy bull calves for a dollar.
You don’t band/Castration the bull calf’s to make them steers? Anyways good video the people that hate will always hate so don’t worry about there views. The haters only pretend to listen
I think putting a 'band' on cattle was made illegal here quite a while ago. Still common practice with sheep and goats tho, its supposed to be used at no more than 1 week old.
