I love everyone talking about 0:38 because it's something I always loved in the original song. I remember hearing a cover that accentuated that part with French horn and uggghhh
It’s a beautiful element to the song that 95% of fan-covers and remasters utterly fail to include. I’m glad the 5th Anniversary version exists. It did this part justice.

@@TheAdvertisement I just listened to that cover for the first time. I’m glad they recognized the countermelody exists and it’s a great cover, but I still think the 5th anniversary version handled it better.
1:30 the chimes are my favorite part in the main theme, and they are great here too

What I love about these videos is they let me take a closer listen to details I'd probably never notice otherwise, like the bassline being a simple square wave, or the violin countermelody at 0:38.

A square wave is among the simplest waveforms out there and it is very common in chiptune and 8-bit music due to old hardware having very limited sound producing capabilities.
The point I'm trying to get across is that Toby Fox is creative enough to write such incredibly rich and emotional music while making use of the simplest instruments.
Like, if you get to Waterfall, and Undyne immediately starts chasing you with her ground and overworld spears for the whole length of Waterfall, and she's already in Undying form, because she's prepared to end you after what you've done in Snowdin and the forest.

Sounds like a first phase of the boss fight. Like in Metal Gear Rising. After you drop Undyne's HP enough the full song will start playing.

This sounds like if you fought Undyne in her Undying form in a friendly spar in a Pacifist Route, where both you and Undyne are having fun with it instead of it being a battle fought for the sake of every monster in the Underground.

Wow. You have no clue what thse “Undertale without the main Melody”videos mean to me. I feel embarassed and sad, relieved, overjoyed and thrilled all at the same time.
Embarassed because I always knew Toby was an amazing composer, but I feel like a fake fan for not being able to pick out these myself - especially because he inspired me to get into music theory and composing.
Relieved and overjoyed because everything I learned about music theory FINALLY clicked just now. And overjoyed because I finally put my finger to what my own beats were missing -- a *melody*.
And finally, when I heard this I realized this sounds like something I’ve *made*. I can be as good as my hero someday. S thank you :)

Wait, why are you on level 11?
Did you not know that it was possible? If you do some calculations and kill glyde when you are missing a monster in snowdin and kill the necessary monsters you will reach level 11 in waterfall.
You can get even more than that if you only kill Looxes and Glydes
