There are breaths between a lot of the lines, and if I were to do that, then you would be able to hear the cutoff of the breaths in front of each line, which is kinda jarring, so I just kind of stick to this instead. But yeah, if I could do it that way, I probably would, or at least I'd implement it in the beginning like you said. :/

"duo with extra" maker, with an inverted off vocal version of the song you can cancel the bgm in the covers out if being lined up accurately. You can as well isolate the voices via extracting the center channel. On top, adjusting their equalizing will make the transitions smoother.
