You’d think the Greek gods would be doing well in America and in general, given how famous they are and how much Greco Roman stuff is all over the European world. And how they actually do have some followers again.
The other gods are (in the series, Vulcan is killed by Wotan). But under the author's words, the Greeks are, too well known and too praised. Unlike other gods, the representation of the Olympians is straightforward. The statue of liberty, the government buildings, Hermes in the station, the months of the year, the name of the planets. Ceres/Demeter is certainly one of the most overlooked goddesses of the Olympians, but Zeus, Athena and Aphrodite? Icons of modern culture, even Eros/cupidus is the image of St. Valentine. Demeter is in this state because she totally lost her Eleusinian mysteries. Although rather than finding a logical reason why Demeter is like this and the other Olympians are not, it is that they just wanted a replacement for Ostara. I would have bet better on Chloris/Flora. A Greek/Roman goddess of flowers and gardens, easy to forget but replacing ostara as goddess of spring.
Just try finding the soundtrack for whatever season this is on. That’s usually how I find music that’s not on music platforms. Due to it being on a show
my problem with stuff like this involving gods is that when worship has a clear and extreme effect why wouldn't you worship? like seriously it would fundamentally alter society and be based on what gods you worship and if you didn't have a direct god to go to bat for you your at a clear disadvantage, forget war, war is just the start of what would happen people would seek out ways to manipulate the system to push their gods agenda in all sorts of ways
and if one god for whatever reason isnt helping say end a famine if another does and then protects you from the one that didnt help, very quickly the whole dynamics of this world would be all over the place
This doesn’t happen to everyone. It only happens to some. And those people go on and spread the faith and some people believe and some don’t. The gods don’t appear to everyone.
@@WTKB82 gods dont need to appear to everyone they just need to have a clear effect on the world, like if you offer x amount of your best wheat the god of fertility blesses your crops to grow bigger and better next time, honestly any time people see a more efficient way to do things they gravitate towards them, and honestly its to the point people that DONT do something to attract a god would be viewed as stupid/a massive risk
Wait, wouldn't her and the other Greek gods come to America thanks to the obsession of Greek and Roman mythology by the educated in the 18th century? The Founding Fathers enjoyed a lot of Classical mythology and borrowed a lot from ancient Greece and Rome when they founded the US. So, why not derive Demeter's coming to America from there? In season one it was already established that attention to a god was enough for it to sustain life, not actual worship. That's why you have the New Gods. I guess by this time the show has jumped the shark with its lore.
It's been a long time since I watched season 1, but while attention may be enough to sustain a god's life, it might not be enough to summon one. I can envision worship being required for that feat. The founding fathers also do not feel like an appropriate vehicle to introduce Demeter in particular. Also, according to the American Gods wiki page, this scene took place in 1765, so the timing isn't that far off. It does not feel like an instance of jumping the shark to me.
@@fong03 But what about the New Gods like Media, both new and old forms? She wasn't summoned by the kind of worship we see in this video. There weren't any explicit religious prayers when she appeared. Or an example of an old god like Anubis appearing at a Muslim woman's home in the first season. She worships Allah but her loving and believing the stories she was told as a child of Egyptian mythology were enough for Anubis to appear to her. Why not the educated during the colonial era in the 18th century who took a lot of inspiration from the Greek and Roman gods?
It’s native to America thiugh. The gods are not all the same being. The Demeter who exists in Greece is not the same as the Demeter who manifest in America. The beliefs and practices surrounding them change. This is outlined in the book and even in the show when you see different versions of Jesus.
Just waiting for when Gods like Eris, Whiro, Apep, Angra Mainyu, Guayota, Erra or Elo Araphel are ever used as villains in series like this, that would be phantastic
I mean no ones obliged to do anything for Demeter in the same way she’s not obliged to do anything for us. Off the top of my head human sacrifice was never a big part of her worship but, like most other Greek gods, animal sacrifice was. Pigs were a favourite of hers since they allegedly covered the tracks Persephone made on her way to the underworld, stopping Demeter from reaching her in time to ‘save’ her.
The best sacrifice for Demeter are Calla Lily and Pig Innards. If you can get those above, then just bring Honey or Meads. The most general sacrifice for Gods.. In Nordic, the viking sacrifice bull/cow innards instead of pig for good harvest. In Indonesia, the Javanese would sacrifice bull head for ie. Probably Demeter came from Greek and Cow is regarded as sacred animal compares to pig.
Okay, there are a few misconceptions and a lot of the truth in this comment thread, but all of you have nuggets of the correct information. Demeter’s mystery cult in Greece at Eleusis was a mystery cult, meaning we don’t really know how the Greeks worshipped her, but we know a few things from the historical and archeological record. The Greek gods did demand animal sacrifices but never human ones. Demeter’s worshipers did most commonly disembowel sows to worship her. As far as human sacrifices, to be a part of Demeter’s mystery cult, the only requirement we are sure of is that no initiates could have ever committed a blood crime, meaning you can’t have killed another human being.
If you guys want to see what remains of Demeter in a Hindu format, one needs to Visit Varanasi to the temple of Annapoorna (The Goddess of the Grain) what a sight and with her blessings no one goes to sleep hungry within the City. ❤️🙏
I am almost done watching the series, and I was wondering if anyone is as confused about this series as I am? Don't get me wrong, I like it, but I'm totally lost in regards to the story. Lol! FYI, this has to be one of my favorite scenes in the whole series.
This is a couple centuries before present day so I think it makes sense to have “aged” her. Just like Odin is younger during this time period. I would argue though that being a goddess of the harvest, aging her is suppose to be symbolic; we meet her during the “spring of her womanhood” and meet her again during the “winter” of her life, just before she disappears. I think it makes sense.
In the Eleusinian Mysteries after Demeter lost her daughter she took the form an old woman to take up residence in the house of the king of Eleusis to take care of his infant son Demophon since she couldn’t care for her own daughter
Annapoorna and demeter are very different.. their stories and folklore are nothing alike.. but i get your point of view.. both are goddesses of grain..
