In the digital age, we increasingly use written language in place of face to face chat or phone calls. But the advantages email, chat, and text give us in speed come with limitations in communicating emotional tone. Enter emoticons and emojis. Not just a playful supplement to language, these new tools allow for complexity in tone and emotion never before possible in written language, as well as provide new opportunities for creative expression. Rapidly spreading throughout culture, emoticons and emojis fill a void in written language that few realized we so desperately needed.

I don't think emojis will completely replace written text, but i definitely think they're an important part of textual communication; they really set the mood of a conversation and prevent miscommunication of emotive quality uwu
In Homestuck, there is no on-page dialog. Instead, it's presented as a chat log. WIth only the use of punctuation and the character's writing style and diction, the author has given us the tone of their speech with no description. Emoticons are a part of telling us how a character is speaking, or what faces they are making that are not in the accompanying panel. :3 Emoticons are already changing literature and I think it's cool.
Absolutely fascinating! It's the beginning of a true interlingual, international language.
Off book never fails to entertain me.
Agree! so interesting yet so informative!
TOTES U GUYZ, let's go all the way back to hieroglyphics! We're in an age... that didn't take history lessons and thinks everything is "new".
sooo shy and embarrassed are essentially the same emoticon
This just reminds me of the mayan's language, they used small 'icons' with words to tell a story, so this is not the future of language, but actually the past! amazing isn't it!? :)
I love these segments from PBS!!!
I've just commented "
Mayans were doing that before it went mainstream
It's funny we think of a book of emoji as groundbreaking. Many cultures have created pictogram languages to break language barriers, the most prominent being Chinese.
great now we are going to revert back to pictographic writing , the human race is reverse evolving faster than I thought
Not really, we are instead evolving towards the acknowledgement that both written language and pictography might be complementary and equally important. ʘ‿ʘ
Scottecs the earliest forms of writing were pictogragh , they represented thoughts ideas and most commonly objects . as our need for written communication grew writing evolved , each symbol representing phonetics to be combined in a multitude of ways to have the meaning of words from a given language thus having the impact and preciseness of that language , it is much easier to show the image of a man on a facility entry than write out the explanation of what the room is for. in a short statement of just a few words it is very difficult to express emotion , such as a text message so in the intrest of keeping the message short we add a little picture to convey emotion to help limit misunderstandings . however writing a book with nothing else is the opposite of sophisticated writing . we are talking about a master piece reduced to smiley faces . we are talking about future generations not being able to express themselves without using an emote
wade faber Ok, I agree with you that Moby Dick in Emoji is a bit too extreme (but I see it as an experiment, not as the way we're actually going). What I mean though is that we might be going towards a kind of communication that includes both verbal and pictographic writing.
Ancient: Pictures
Current: Words
Future(?): Pictures AND words
My 0.02$ :) ;) :D D: ( ^∀^)
wade faber And of course I'm mostly talking about the West. Asian languages (I speak Japanese) have had both for a long time. But apparently even that wasn't enough, and in order to convey more precise facial expressions through written language they've naturally invented Kaomoji.
Scottecs well that's likely second nature to people who grew up with the Asian languages , they have been using a system that started as pictographic with thousands of symbols all with specific meaning , they only developed a simplified version after typewriters were invented and imagine a key board with a couple thousand keys , so the emote is likely a version of symbols they already had that would express emotion in their written language anyhow , where westerners are only going to use these in place of articulating their thoughts through writing , that's just my two cents , happy face , laughing face , upside down laughing face , smug with myself face
we need more emojis (like a lot more)
This was wonderful, I absolutely love this channel. Well made, thought provoking, enjoyable to view. Seriously, thank you PBS for making the internet just a little cooler.
This reminds me of the book _the Diamond Age_ by Neil Stephenson. While the book deals mostly about nano-technology and its impact in the future, it does mentions a new form of language based in animated pictograms which are essentially complex emoticon GIF's which can be displayed in any surface.
Given the movement and liberty of these images, they work as a way to communicate _any_ message to people, turning some into functional illiterates who never need to learn how to read the "old" and "stiff" letters.
It's a fascinating idea what will happen when emoticons gain movement with the increasing ubiquity of screens around us.
I'm a firm believer of the use of the equal sign, space, right parentheses smiley! = )
Well condensed video, it covers the different emoticon eras: from 80s Lite Speak to emoji´s phenomenon. Interessting
Were all those flashing colors really necessary? I think you should warn people about that at the beginning of the video. Made it really hard to enjoy the content of the video.
***** i liked the background music
1. You really should put a epilepsy seizure trigger warning in the beginning of the video.
2. That's not Charlie Chaplin @03:16 but Robert Downey Jr. as Chaplin from the movie Chaplin from 1992
Emoticons have to be short and accessible to be practical...
In Asia, they don't use it as we do in America. *We use emoticons as a "shortcut" to express our state of mind*... In Asia, *they use them as pictographs and ideographs*, which is, in a way, only an extension to their "common writing".
I don't think they are using emoticons in an efficient way compared to us since their emoticons can comprise A LOT of glyphs...
The future of language? Not in the near term. The future of punctuation? Absolutely.
I don't think that it's the future. I think that emoticons are already part of modern communication.
They are a part of modern communication, it's just not fully ubiquitous or naturally used like say the Emojii version of Moby Dick. Why that becomes the norm, then the "future" becomes the now.
That would be fun, if the specifications I get at work to code programs are completely done in emojis. Should be the emoji for "WTF" all over the place.
LOVE this video... so cool!
Good video but the purpose of those flashing colours eludes me.
Oh my word! Emoji Dick is absolutely brilliant! XD
Very interesting, communication is an art!
I for one am saddened by the lack of the list of the emoticons used as slides in the vid in the about section.
L🅾♈️E ❤️ this T♓️✖️ 🙌 4⃣ sharing.
Just figured to say cause I couldn't finish the video- and others might find difficulties too.
Warning for watchers-
Rapid flashing lights warning.
I never see what complicated emojis are supposed to be representing! does that make me a sociopath? :/
When you say complicated emoji do you mean the built-in smileyfaces on mobile devices or the kaomoji, like ゜*。(*´Д`)。*°?
Kaomoji certainly have a cultural flair to it, so at times it might be difficult to discern what they mean should you not be familiar with the Japanese culture.
In short; you're definitely not a sociopath, you just don't have "the eye" yet. (^_~)v
This video made me :)
I need a list of the ones they used in this video. They are hard to read while having an epileptic seizure.
The topic was interesting, but the visuals were incredibly distracting with all the flashing. >.
It has been around, since the dawn of time and the Egyptian time.
Vladimir Nabokov confirmed for king of [s4s]. :^)
how can u translate all those emoticons!?
I come from the future!
The answer is... kinda yes.
Now, I shall return to the future!
wasn't a fan of the flashing background colors, definitely could've triggered epilepsy for someone since there was no video warning....great content though!
Wait, have I been using T_T wrong all this time?! I thought it was like *NOT AMUSED* than crying. Hmph.
How is this different from Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics? Looks like language is making a full circle here..... Fascinating!
:-{)> ( that's me with a goaty beard)
"Talk" like an Egyptian... o_O
cute and clever
wow i was thinking the comments was gonna be a bunch of them not words O:
neat
Yes They are. You can't tell how people feel through your moble divices, so you have to develope a way to know right? Well I still don't know v^ewe^v .
Darmok and Jalad at Tenagra? Anyone?

Anybody watching in 2019
modern day hieroglyphics?
This comment section is just going to be filled with emoji. XD
emoticons remind me of chinese calligraphy.
Not to hate on emoticons or anything, but isn't this just another variation of heiroglyphic writing like what the ancient Egyptians, and countless other cultures, used: stylized images of objects used to represent & express ideas, objects, feelings & such? The form taken might be new & the symbols being mostly understood by people from all languages through use on the internet is a definite convenience, but is this really all that earth-shattering?
right because communicating with pictures is a new thing... hello the Egyptians and Mayans are way ahead of this... these people are sheltered.
ps embarassed is with two 'r's ^_^
Who are the talking heads?
Ben Zimmer
I thought this was going to be satirical... but I was wrong... :|
DOOKIE
NO. THEY ARE THE END OF IT.
Not sure if trolling 😮
***** "Trolling" is not a crime, and criticisms differ from opinions. Humorous verbal provocative jabs at this and that, fail as a trolling definition, also... (sarcasm? and ironical speaking?). Also, there are those words called mocking, sneering, bullying and whatnot, AND ALL THOSE MENTIONED HERE ARE ALL DIFFERENT WORDS FOR DIFFERENT CONCEPTS, DAWG! LOL ("Laugh out loud!")
Borilius Belatorium Interesting that neither of us has placed a moral value on them, though you do seem hostile, which indicates displeasure. There aren't cursive emoji, none are hand-written, all are machine generated. They seem to remove the human element from communication by yet another degree. It's sort of like computer art...can you really call a computer-generated image art? One more brick in the Tower of Babel, perhaps?
norman tveit LOL, I always seem to look hostile on the internet, but _am_ I really, dawg? First, have I _been_ actually hostile _to you_ previously? Aren't you actually just *jumping on me right now* because of what you think my opinion _is_ on trolling? And you perceive _me_ as hostile?... Second, how _can I troll anyone_ by _leaving a message_ and you, a *random reader* felt _theatened_ and/or _personally disrespected_ (did I adress _you_, or the guy above _me_, personally???)... And all that crap (from both of you!) 'cus you _find_ my comment being _trollish_?!?! What the fuck! YOU actually (both of you! LOL) are _doing_ an instance trolling (not words, attitude and deeds ;)), _right now_, hoping to "gain" something (whatever it is) on the expense of _my_ emotional state? N'aah buddy for your "method", I am trollproof. LOL
(But _YES_ damn it. I _USE_ the fucking language to _sound_ better in my opinion by using fucking *sarcasm*. If you _find that trollish_ then I simply don't care! Bluntly put, I will troll you more! then! your kind of aggressiveness_ (*passive* aggressive-ness... being "accusative" of me because of what I _dare to do_: to _mock and ridicule concepts_!) will be _met_ with further *merciless verbal trolling* Ahahaha! ,.... OMG you... you current internet population are _such_ goofballs that I cannot help but wonder where the world is going, damn it!
norman tveit {see this? much better than emojis ->} -*-*sigh*-*- But let me answer your question though! Emojis are truly an internet invention and they -_-do-_- have a purpose (of expressing -_-explicitly-_- an emotional state that could be -_-interpreted-_- differently than intended by the -_-reader-_- 'cus of missing -_-body language-_- ...) but taken out-of context and out-of-usage they -*-do murder and butcher the language to the point of being unintelligible krap fit only for a bot's consumption-*-... o_o O_O.... Do you get it now??? >;-) :-D :-) I hope you do, though! ... !!LAUGH_OUT_LOUD_SEQUENCE_INITIATED!, !!LOLLERING_STARTED! !!AWAITING_FURTHER_INSTRUCTIONS!
edit: OMG! This... formatting instance is even better than emojiiiiis!
:)
Well Emoji Moby Dick is stupid...
No...
"Are Emoticons the Future of Language?" What a stupid fucking question.
Of course they're not, we're evolving not DEvolving. We're not turning back into cavemen drawing pictures on the walls to communicate. Baffles me to think that some people have such ridiculous ideas of the future, like this.
XD
V
Yeah those emoticons were all Asian e.g. T_____T
Western emoticons are like :-) etc
That's a racist comment- there all Asians...
Tasha Heart What do you mean?
:D
No.
Headache inducing video... Easy on the music, effects and focus upon trivial fads please.
:S
Conclusion: No.
Jesus Christ, pull back. These relentless closeups are just creepy.
