      So, if I make two changes to card effects, specifically "Hand Control" and The Eye of Timaeus, there is a narrow path to victory
      Add the following effect: "Fusion Monsters Summoned by this card gains the effect(s) of Fusion Material monsters in the Graveyard"
      Hand Control would force Rafael to destroy a card to activate Necromancy. He would destroy "Purity of the Cemetery"
      Turn 10: Yami Yugi
      Yami Yugi draws "Card of Sanctity". During the Standby Phase, the effect of "Purity of the Cemetery" activates. Since Yami has 6 Monsters in Graveyard ("Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts", "Chimera the Flying Mythical Beast", "Berfomet", "Kuribabylon", "Dark Magician Girl" and "Big Shield Gardna"), "Purity of the Cemetery" deals 600 Damage to him (Yugi 1200 ? 600). Yami Yugi activates "Card of Sanctity" to make him and Rafael draw until both have 6 Cards in their Hands. Yugi's hand now contains "Hand Control", "Dark Magician", "Sangan", "Magical Hats", "De-Fusion" and "The Seal of Orichalcos"
      Yami Yugi then activates "Hand Control" and declares "Necromancy". Since Yami Yugi guessed right, Rafael is forced to activate "Necromancy" immediately (Rafael had already guessed which Card he wanted to use, so he simply says: "Use it, Yugi".). Rafael must destroy a Spell/Trap card to activate it. Rafael selects "Purity of the Cemetery". "Big Shield Gardna" (100/2600), "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts" (1500/1200), "Berfomet" (1400/1800) and "Kuribabylon" (?/200) are Special Summoned to Yami Yugi's side of the Field in Defense Position.
      Rafael's hand is shown to contain "Wicked-Breaking Flamberge - Baou", "Kishido Spirit", "Aid to the Doomed", "Rod of the Mind's Eye", "Necromancy", and "Monster Rebirth". Yami Yugi then Tributes "Kuribabylon" and "Gazelle the King of Mythical Beasts" to summon "Dark Magician" (2500/2100) in Attack mode.
      "Dark Magician" attacks "Guardian Grarl" and is destroyed (Yami Yugi: 600→100). Since "Dark Magician" is in the Graveyard, "Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight" gains 300 ATK, since it has "Dark Magician Girl's" effect (2600→2900/1700). Since "Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight's" ATK was changed by a Card effect, "Crystal Seal" is Destroyed. "Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight" attacks Rafael's "Guardian Grarl". Yami Yugi then activates "Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight's" effect to discard "Sangan" and Destroy "Guardian Grarl".
      Yami Yugi then attacks and destroys "Backup Gardna" with "Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight". Yami Yugi then sets “Magical Hats”
      Turn 11: Rafael
      Rafael draws. Due to the effect of "Guardian Treasure", Rafael draws one extra card. Rafael then activates "Monster Rebirth" to take "Backup Gardna" from his Graveyard and return it to the Deck. Rafael activates "Nightmare Binding" attempting to decrease the ATK of Yami Yugi's "Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight" by 800, increase Rafael's Life Points by 800, and forbid Yami Yugi from Tributing "Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight". Yami Yugi counters with by discarding "The Seal of Orichalcos" to negate the activation and effect of "Nighmare Binding" and destroy it. Rafael then activates "Swords of Revealing Light" to prevent Yami from attacking for 3 Turns and forcing all of Yami's monster to be face-up while "Swords of Revealing Light" is active.
      Turn 12: Yami Yugi
      Due to "Swords of Revealing Light", Yami cannot attack (3 more Turns). Yami Yugi draws "Catapult Turtle". Yami Yugi then activates "Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight's" effect to discard “De-Fusion” and Destroy “Guardian Kay’est”.
      Turn 13: Rafael
      Rafael draws. Due to the effect of "Guardian Treasure", Rafael draws one extra card. Rafael's hand contains "Wicked Breaking Flamberge - Baou", "Kishido Spirit", "Morale Boost" and "Rod of the Mind's Eye".
      From here, it’s unclear what Rafael maybe able to do. The honest answer is not much. With no monsters on the field, all Rafael can do is hope he can draw “Backup Gardna”. If he does that, he can Summon it, then play “Celestial Sword - Eatos” and (maybe) win. (Yugi totally uses Magical Hats to buy him enough time and cards to win) If he fails to draw “Backup Gardna”, then all Yami Yugi needs to do is tribute either “Berformer” or “Big Shield Gardna” and Summon “Archfiend of Gilfer”, and once the effect of “Swords of Revealing Light” wears off, Yami Yugi can attack directly with “Archfiend of Gilfer” and “Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight” for game.

      Season 4 is not canon to the manga but it is canon to the anime. Dark side of Dimensions made it clear that the anime and manga are two different continuities. And Duel spirits and the DS world would become important plot points for GX and 5D's.

    • @GiftedContractor
      @GiftedContractor 2 года назад +245

      I always thought that was supposed to be the character flaw, but then the dub went with this "you gave in to anger" bullshit. Like no, Atem just doesn't understand how to duel without stakes. He never came out for duels that weren't for the fate of the world before (yes Kaiba is treated as wrong for getting on Yugi's case for being dramatic, but he kind of has a point, it's just not the one he thinks he's making). Rebecca, for example, was dealt with by Yugi on his own. The only duel I can think of pre-dragons arc, even in filler episodes was the time Atem dueled the guy creeping on Tea and he was pretty clearly in control the whole game so it's not a great representation. Other than that, he's always put the fate of the world on the line for every duel he's been in. He always bet too many Star Chips or Locator Cards to be able to afford to lose, or his soul was on the line, or his opponent was going to get his God Card or his Puzzle. Looking back on it that way, not only does it make Kaibas constant jabs over Yugi being dramatic af actually feel more meaningful and relevant, but it also explains why Atems final test was for him to lose a duel - he has to show he's learned it's ok to lose sometimes and not every duel is life or death. You put that guy in the Rafael duel and of course he's going to play like the fate of the world is on the line and not recognize that it isn't. That's the only way he knows how.

    Ironically if Yugi did scoop, it would prove Rafael wrong - Yugi would show he isn't willling to do evil even if it means losing. That's kind of the opposite of what Rafael was trying to prove.
    The duel was just because Rafael already knew Atem would do whatever it takes to win. If the Pharaoh actually won the duel, Rafael would still be right. This kinda happens a lot in the anime (whoever wins the duel is, like, the better person or whatever) but I thought it was especially interesting here because the explicit point is that the duel SHOULDN'T matter and Atem does NOT need to win.

    23:45 If Atem won this duel with the Seal of Orichalcos, it would have been more compelling, as he would have won with (according to the show) immoral means, proving Rapheal right in this duel, as well as future opportunities to further prove him right after he wins, continuing to use the seal much like how Yuma used Rank-Up Magic: Barians’ Force to win duels despite Astral’s concerns over the card’s origins. Then after Atem goes on a win streak with the Seal, you could’ve had him face Dartz (a master of the Seal of Orichalcos, essentially) early and have him be the one to beat Atem and take Yugi’s soul. It would solidify the impact of relying too much on the Seal, and turn Dartz into a more personal villain, one that has taken from each of his subordinates and from has now taken from us.

    Setting a Field Spell face-down in the regular S/T zones wasn't just done by Mako, Yami Bakura also did it with Dark Sanctuary (after he summons Dark Necrofear, he sets Destiny Board and a mystery face-down which had to be Dark Sanctuary. It wasn't The Dark Door because he very clearly uses it from his hand, and it wasn't the 2 Dark Spirit of the Silents because we very clearly see him setting them later. He didn't use any other S/T cards, and yet his "mystery face-down" wasn't on the field anymore, easily confirmed by how much the number of open S/T zones mattered: he eventually has The Dark Door and 4 out of 5 Destiny Board cards)

    This duel is so odd. Because it would make so much more sense in the manga, where it's heavily implied the Pharaoh has a severe fear of losing. But not in the anime, where this is never even hinted at. So it makes more sense in the version it doesn't exist in than the one it was made for.

      It's very mildly hinted at? More specifically in the final duel with Yugi..It's mildly hinted at that to move on they'd need to do the one thing he's afraid of and has never happened to him before: loosing a duel (in a fair way, he's lost plenty of times in unfair duels); he has to "learn how to loose gracefully" which kinda hints that he can't stand loosing.

      Its kinda how Yugi vs Mai in the dub would make more sense in the manga.
      In the dub Yami struggles because Yugi is wrestling for control over their body because he doesn’t trust Yami after he tried to kill Kaiba
      In the manga Yami struggles vs Mai because he’s cocky & is entirely thinking about facing Pegasus. I dont like how the manga did though and love how the dub displayed Yugi’s fear of Yami, but the problem is that there isn’t enough of this plot point in the dub because Yami is more morally righteous. Manga Yami with the dub’s plot point about how Yugi is scared of Yami for harming people woulda made more sense.

    Actually in the very beginning, Yugi made a misplay that cost him the entire duel. He could have used the spell from his hand to boost gazelles attack when attacking the facedown. Had he done so, he would have been able to prevent Raphael from playing his first equip spell, thus special summoning his monster, thus allowing him to chain the other cards that backed Yugi into the corner. This would have also made gazelle PERMANENTLY 4200 atk, giving Yugi a near impossible front line to ever surpass.
    This is important because the events of the duel would have proceeded in a similar manner, but would have gone longer, leading to Yugi drawing more cards and having catapult turtle earlier.

      What made it worse too is that Atem let his fear of losing get the better of him in this Duel, especially because he thought losing would equal his methods were wrong, and his ego couldn't take it, and neither could his pride. Which is why he played right into Rafael's hands when he willingly used The Seal of Orichalcos just because he thought it was the only way to free Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight from Crystal Seal, when he could have had other options. Not to be a backseat duelist, but I'm thinking that Yugi had another play besides the Seal of Orichalcos. He drew Magical Hats with Card of Sanctity, Magical fucking Hats! So, use Hand Control to force Rafael to play Necromancy to get 4 monsters back. Then sac two of them to summon Dark Magician (ideally, he should sacrifice Kuribabylon and Big Shield Gardna) and attack Backup Gardna, destroying it and and by extension, Purity of the Cemetery. End the turn by setting Magical Hats and activate it when Rafeal goes to attack.
    This puts Rafael in a very difficult position; if he doesn't attack, Yugi has time to recover but does attack he risks destroying a hat covering a monster summoned by Necromancy (a 50% chance). Which when destroyed would cause a face up monster Yugi controls to lose 600 attack points. And with only one valid target, Dark Magician Girl would be free. Now it doesn't guarantee a win or anything, but it does buy time.

    I have a good one for you: Was Vector about to defeat Yuma at Sargasso? Vector was about to win twice.
    The first was when Utopia Ray V equipped with Chimera Clad was repeatedly attacking Masquerade but still losing LP due to Vector’s Over Hundred trap forcing Dark Zexal/Astral to attack again. If he’d reached low enough life, he would essentially killed himself or have Sargasso’s effect destroy him during the end phase.
    The second time was when Vector had Barian Explosion set and Yuma drew RUM Limited Barian’s Force on his final turn. The trap would destroyed all ‘Barian’ cards is Yuma’s hand and inflicted 1000 damage and since his LP was just 100, Vector should’ve won. However, when Yuma and Astral morphed into ZEXAL II, they cheated… I mean evolved Limited Barian’s Force into its true appearance via Re Contact Universe: RUM Numeron Force. If that kind of shenanigans never happened, Vector would’ve won the duel.
    What do you think? I think I’ve got the details right to the best I can explain them without dragging out to much. Perhaps while you’re at it, you can predict what the outcomes of Shark vs Durbe and Kite vs Mizeal going on at the same time would go out had they not been interrupted.

      On a side note: outside of V Salamander, the other V cards Yuma got from Vector (V Gnome, B Sylph, V Undine and V Call) have never been used or their effects revealed. The fact that I liked the Waking the Dragons arc is because it gave more depth to Yami Yugi's character and actually made me love him even more. the duel was briliant ngl but Yami already learned it's wrong to choose victory over a person's life after his rematch with Kaiba in Duelist Kingdom. He abandoned that mindset and grew to value life such as when he enraged at Pandora for killing his opponent. So this duel kinda reset his development and start over.

    • @BryonYoungblood
      @BryonYoungblood 2 года назад +6

      @Zone Heart Well, that was only in the dub. In the original, he basically had to realize the true strength of a Duelist isn't from winning, but being prepared to lose and potentially suffer from it, and realizing how even if he was the one who was scared to lose because of his pride, regardless of the fact Kaiba would die, Yugi was the one who wasn't scared of winning or losing, but of killing someone just for the sake of victory.
      For the dub, I'd say that *MAYBE* this is, but it also can count as a parallel to that moment in Duelist Kingdom because of the fact Yugi had been able to take control and stop Atem from killing Kaiba, but this time, Atem "won" by preventing Yugi from getting in his way and lost more than just the Duel--- he'd also seen he was like everyone else and had darkness in his heart as well as Yugi protecting him by sacrificing his soul so Atem would be able to carry on.

      Interestingly, Atem’s arrogance and pride was more pronounced in the manga version of Duelist Kingdom.
      He could’ve defeated Pegasus in his first duel but prolonged it because that wasn’t how he wanted to win.
      The reason why he stopped doing penalty games after that arc was to reinforce that he wasn’t evil.

    • @Ramona122003
      @Ramona122003 Год назад +1

      @Melissa D "Or how about when he almost killed Bakura"
      That isn't true in any version. Yami was never going to attack Bakura and was willing to lose.
      "Then you’ve got the pyramid of light movie "
      That movie isn't acknowledged in the original anime.
      "keeps playing even though he could throw the duel at any time and nothing bad would happen. "
      Not true since the moment the Pyramid of Light was played it became a Shadow Game and Yami knew this. Which is why he was taking real damage from every attack. He also kept telling Kaiba to stop, not throw the duel, since he's the one who started the Shadow Game.
      "Basically while it’s not perfect, it honestly makes a lot of sense for dub Atem to play the orichalcos"
      No it doesn't because he wasn't even willing to send normal Marik to the Shadow Realm to stop Yami Marik from taking over the world. The same Marik who did nothing but terrorized him and his friends to the point that even normal Marik wondered how Atem could be so forgiven.

      Jaden purposely let Zane have the first move, so as not to let him special summon Cyber Dragon. Aside from that, I don't see what could have changed the outcome.

      @@DTran-je1sn Jaden played many moves to try to counter Zane's strategy as he knew it from their last duel, trying to outsmart him, except Zane played differently and he walked straight into it. For example, he sacrificed Wildheart to destroy Different Dimension Capsule, believing Zane had put Power Bond in there again (it wasn't), and as a result leaving his field empty of monsters while Zane had three Cyber Dragons. Had he simply played how he usually does, he might have faired better.

    The funny thing is risking his soul just to avoid losing is established to be in-character for Yami/Atem. He was willing to let Kaiba off himself, in Duelist Kingdom, and Yugi's the one that had to order Celtic Guardian to stop attacking. Granted, in that one, there was an actual stake, Yugi's Grandfather.

      But in this case, there were no high stakes before he played that card. If he just threw the towel, he would come out unscathed. “Tough luck” and that’s it.
      On the other hand, if he haven’t played the card, I wouldn’t be able to see so much needed improvement in character, so I’ll give him a pass this time.

    3:45 I just wanna point out, this was the REAL moment Yugi lost the duel. When he declared his first attack. Why? Because, even if Raphael wasn't tellingly confident that his monster would be fine, Yugi should've realized not to attack:
    Backup Gardna can't get Equip, nor move Equips if it isn't face-up; Yugi attacking it put it in face-up Defense Position, but if Raphael had to FLIP SUMMON IT, it would go into Attack Position, where it has like, 800 ATK. Since Raphael's LP at the end of the duel is 100, battle damage through Backup Gardna would have been HUGE!
    Anyway, neat video! Thanks for uploading!

    Atem’s weakness was the inability to take a Loss. He always had to win. His greatest lesson was learning to lose.

    • @kyuubinaruto17
      @kyuubinaruto17 2 года назад +11

      I think the main issue is that losing usually had some big stake involved. If he loses Duelist Kingdom his grandfather is never getting his soul back. If he loses to Marik or any of his henchmen it's gonna be fatal. If he loses to Yugi he loses all the bonds he's made since being in darkness 3000 years.
      The whole thing with Rafael feels a little suspect, because it negated some character development. With Kaiba he was ready to kill to win to protect his grandfather. But when it came to Bakura he wasn't willing to wipe out regular Bakura for a win. Then with Rafael he's back to not being able to accept losing.

    Great video, always wondered how that duel could've gone given with what was there, and for better or worse now I know.
    I do have 2 suggestions for this video series:
    1. Was Kaiba about to defeat Yugi in the Battle City Finals?
    2. Was Zane about to defeat Aster in the Pro League?
    I would love to see what insights you have on these duels if you're able to cover them, as I look forward to more of these types of videos, though I'll understand if you choose not to. Just food for thought.
