I have both the Macallan 12 40% you reviewed and the US version which is 43%. I'm really interested to compare and contrast both bottles even thought the difference in ABV is only 3%
For the price charged for this whisky now, the declining quality of casks used to age it over the years and the fact it's bottled at 40% is criminal. IMHO
The prices are holding a little under control in the US. When I find a big sale / get a little lucky, the 12 Yr Double Cask can be found for $45-50 and the 12 Yr Sherry Oak for $60-$65
Thank you for your great videos, just wondering if bottle to bottle could be different? I have this one and every time I drink it,I get way way more oak taste than cherry and can't find it fruity. It is definitely pricy especially down in Australia where we get 5 times more tax etc. :)
You could comfortably say “it’s fine” and be on the mark. No really big stand out flavors. Kinda gentle and rounded. Nose is nice. I get more floral than your typical Sherry finish. The bottle does say Sherry “seasoned” and it is quite light in color for Sherry finished so not sure what that means. On the palate I get notes of spice and dark fruit, however those notes struggle against the alcohol (weird for a 43% abv, but that’s what I get from it). It just didn’t seem like there was a lot going on. For the price, it’s not very interesting. The finish is just pure oak barrel. Like licking a board.
It seems fairly futile to issue some Macallan hate. It's so overpriced as to become invisible to real whisky drinkers. It should be £35 but it's closer in price to Glendronach 18 than to comparable whiskies. I just bought a Darroze 20 year old Armagnac for less than this. Guess which one's better? The pathetic and old fashioned 40% abv emphasises the point that this whisky is not for real whisky drinkers. It's a trophy from somebody trying to impress and the old sucker cliche of being able to afford it. I know Horst loves his Macallan but the good old days are over. I've had some great Macallan over the years, since the 1980's actually, but this is a distillery that has sold its soul to the dollar.
Where I live this bottle sells for something like 60 euro. There is no way I'm paying this premium for 12 yo malt watered down to 40%. Lets face it: it is obvious money grab. Selling water at the price of premium whisky. No, thanks. Macallan or not, sherry cask or not. Especially when I can buy a bottle of Glenallachie 12 yo and a bottle of Arran 10 yo for the same money. Last week I bought a bottle of Glenallachie 10 yo Cask Strength Batch 3 for around 45 euro. Marketing BS aside, this Macallan should cost 35 euro at best and even then I'd rather wait for a special sale to pull the trigger. But then again I'd rather buy something else because those 40% ABV are just BS. Do I regret missing the "super tasty" Macallan? Not for a second. The only regret I have is I'm not the one selling it and collecting the money of the ignorant snobs😀
Pay €35 more and you will get a Glengoyne 21, which has 3% more ABV and is 10 years older, and also matured in 100% European Sherry cask, even first fill.. Or think about the 18 years Allardice...
Totally agree Robin, but let's go in the opposite direction and pay less. Springbank 15 (46%), with a bucket load more character, is less than this. The Aberlour A'bunadh cask strength is less than this. It's a different style but Talisker 18 is less than this. Glendronach 12 and 15 are better than this and cheaper, with better abv. I could go on and on. It's a £35 bottle of whisky and anything more is bragging rights.
This is my go-to. You can't go wrong with any Macallen.. Sherry oak cast is my favorite. Well balanced, complex and distinguished.
The show “suits” helped to increase the price!
I just got a bottle today and having my first dram watching the video ..........really nice.

Lovely drop. Can't go wrong at all. Perfect to savour in the evening.

What a magnificent beard! Did you play Santa this year? 😄
I have to say that this is one of my favorites.
Don't know how it was packaged overseas but in the US single malt sherry cask was in a maroon box. The double cask was in the blue box.

I am a big fan of yours. The greatest review channel!
My uncles favorite after Aberlour 18
My choice for New Years Eve!
Wow Ben that is a lot of fur!
It’s as smooth as the late frummer suits
admittedly this has a lot of flavor for a 40-43%
You can get this for under £50 in UK at the moment if you shop around.
78 € in Portugal. If you find it.
I just bought the same exact bottle for only 7000¥ which is about 65$
Difference between macallan 12 sherry oak and sherry cask?
I really enjoyed thi whiskey. Sydney.
Is this a really sweet whiskey?
hi there you the best video ever seen on RUclips I love you so much
I have an old bottle of this macallan thats 43% abv. Maybe that changed or its higher abv in the US.
Ben, I think you were describing sangria?
Almost 580 CNY in China, and the new version tastes different with the old version.
Instead of this, I encourage you to buy 3 bottles of Glen Elgin 12. You will thank me for life, later on
When we pour this whisky into a glass, we always add Pepsi-cola and lots of ice.
Just kidding...
Better spend money on a glendronach 12...
Never tried Macallan, i think it is to expansive for what you getting. Glendronach is one of my favorite brands.

The Macallan is the old favorite...who lost their way. Too expensive. Too pretentious. Meh.
Glenlivet and Glenfiddich seem to have taken up that role. Both still very affordable. As good as Macallan? Debatable.
was interested until i saw the price, skipping it this time.
it is an excellent drinkable whisky only if it sells below us$50 or about.
In sweden this cost 549SEK, not that expensive
Thats the benefits Of Systembolaget - No middleman.👍😊
Why is glenfiddish 18 the best whisky I have tested
It means you have to taste more..GF18 is mediocre
dronach 18
livet 18
dalmore 18
these three are top notch
@@1247111 Dalmore 18? Overpriced caramel-filled artificially constructed malt....
@@ChrisPBacon-mo9ln Overpriced? Yes
Colored? Yes
I also hate that
Dude, but in the end, at our mouth feel, It's good, gotta admit it
@@1247111 yes. You are right. Also the 12 :-)
£55 in the Uk
Almost $140 in Alberta, Canada. No thanks.
$150 Canadian, no thanks.
That is insane.
Wow, it costs the equivalent of appr. 85 Canadian dollars in Sweden.
@@bjorn7100 I live in Canada as well, Ontario, and no way am I paying $150 for that bottle. $85? absolutely would try it.
You guys gotta spend a little more! I’m in Ontario too and this is a staple now I’m my house, regardless of price. Amazing stuff.
Pronounced seivur (savor).
Too much of glen i read here. What’s with the glen?🤣
I just bought one yesterday at Malaysia 🇲🇾 money RM360 ..
Bought this for $120 Singapore dollars.
So so overrated. I can get Glenfarclas 21 (!) for the same price. Idk what they are thinking.

$60 in Taiwan
Gona buy one soon. It would be funny if Mcallan said they farted in it to add all that complexity.
Worth the price

I don't think I would pay more than $10 for any scotch. To me, scotch is garbage to my taste buds. No offense.

Overpriced, overrated and underpowered.
