  • Kia EV9 Review - Is this 7-seater EV family SUV what Land Rover should be making? The £65,000 349-mile range EV9 is Kia's flagship car comes with either 6 or 7 seats. The boot is huge, the cabin is capacious, it will crack 0-60 in 5 secs and it looks like it's been styled on Bobba Fett's head gear. But it is over 5-metres long.
Does the world need more huge cars? Jonny Smith tries to review every aspect of this award winning electric family wagon.

Lovely video, to quote my better half “he makes it interesting for people who aren't car people”
As for me, it feels like they’ve taken note of everything that makes our current D3 and old GL so practical, learned from it and built something that people with kids/dogs/hobbies need rather than an oversized coupe.

Jonny mentions that people complaining about the use of minerals for the batteries, blah blah blah, will be using laptops and mobile phones. Just how many more minerals and heavy metals does the battery for a car have compared to a laptop? If we all have one electric car, one laptop and one phone, what is going to be the biggest environmental impact - by far?
      Dreadful journalism. Utterly biased.

    • @MrEV

@@julianevans9548 Far more of course, although fewer EV batteries these days use tricky stuff like cobalt and nickel as cheaper, safer, easier-to-source LFP batteries are becoming increasingly popular (sadly not in the EV9 though). Also, laptop and phone batteries don't last anywhere near as long as EV batteries as their cycle count is very low.

I have a theory about these. I don’t think Kia really cares how many of these it sells. Sure it will be chuffed if it does sell a few. But I think the real purpose of this is as a statement of intent from Kia. It’s about putting an EV stake in the ground and saying, this is what we do. I think that’s quite bold and shows real confidence.

Great Review Johnny .... I actually have owned one of these for almost 2 months now and covered 2500 miles and its excellent. I have the 6 seat GT S line version in the same colour you tested and it looks and drives really well. The annoying nagging safety alarms have been short cutted to a button on the steering wheel now and I can switch off what I want in about 20 seconds on start up so its less of a faff. I had a BMW iX before this and I never thought I would say that a KIA was a Rival to my BMW ... but it blows it away in all respects other than the badge snobbery (which i do have a bit of) ....cant recommend it enough.

Your summary of the EV9, a big car that actually exploits its size with a large, accommodating and practical interior, reminds me so much of our old mark 1 Volvo XC90. It was a revelation when it was launched, the first 7 seat SUV to use a transverse engine and really exploit that difference. Similarly the EV9 seems to be the first big EV people carrier (except perhaps for the Tesla Model X) to really make the most of its skateboard platform.
Great job, Kia, and I think you’ve shown not only Land Rover how to do it but Volvo too (the EX90 is insanely expensive and not as roomy as the EV9, I understand).

Good review Johnny. Whilst I agree enormous SUVs like this are quite ridiculous they have a market.
People buy large Audi, BMW and Range Rover SUVs. Kia have demonstrated that an EV can be made into a competent large SUV, a market that was looking difficult until now. While the EV9 might not be quite as luxurious the prestige manufacturers now have to demonstrate they can make an SUV on an EV platform as good as this with all the same practicality of the Kia. If they can’t they will lose customers to Kia who are willing to sacrifice a bit of that luxury feel for a practical SUV that’s a good EV.
Interesting times as EVs continue to be disruptive technology.

A few years ago I had an Infiniti QX60 and the Kia reminds me of it with all the gadgets. I had the 360 cameras and rear seats that fold down at the touch of a button. The seats would also come back up with a button press, but Infiniti didn't bother with a way to electrically get the rear headrests back up. Not a problem , as all they seemed to achieve was an obscured rear view.
Being an engineer I have to ask questions like "if you run the batteries down, and say, go on holiday, and come back and the batteries are totally dead - how do you get the charging flap open to charge the car?
Now for something a bit more techie and a bit more interesting.
If you have a bigger battery pack - you get more range, but the penalty is that you have to push a heavier vehicle with that extra capacity.
This suggests that if a car is available with either a 75 kWh battery or a 100kWh battery, the increased range of the bigger heavier car will not be the expected 33% over the smaller one.
How does it work and what increase would you expect to see?
Does this suggest that we are not going to see the true benefits of bigger power packs and better range until battery weight is severely reduced?

Love the practicality and aesthetics. Stress of Public charging on long journeys with dogs, kids, bikes luggage trailer for me will be the limiting factor when choosing a large family EV over, in my case, an 11 year old 2.5 diesel Volvo XC60 we had from new. Our BMW I3S does a perfect job of 99% of our journeys, gets charged at home - no stress. (Also my motorcycle has 350 mile range 😅)
