I'm friends with Ela Darling, who's regularly been cited as a VR tech pioneer in mainstream publications and asked to speak around the world because of her work in developing the VR porn infrastructure and market and new applications unique to VR.
VR would be revolutionary for training purposes. Pilot training, medical, combat training, bomb disposal, health and safety, the applications are endless and if it's not utilised then they're all eejits

At a show I used VR for a driving game and my girlfriend was laughing at the fact I was looking down at my racesuit and up at the sky whilst I was driving

Fun fact porn hasn't been important for deciding entertainment media since VHS vs Betamax.
DVD and Blu-Ray got that huge acceptance because of videogame consoles using those. Everyone who had a PS2/PS3 (most sold DVD/Blu-Ray player respectively) already had a player. Why would they get another one just to watch the same movies they could already get at about the same quality?
Saying that porn drives the home entertainment industry more than anything else is ignoring the past 20 years.
Thought I put that side of the story out there since there already enough people around saying that there is VR porn.
;tldr; Don't get your facts from a comedy routine. They are ment to make you laugh not necessarily dispense irrefutable truths.
Hate to burst your grapes on this, but "porn" solidified the upgrade of cameras with the whole digital medium, which slowly progressed into the film entertainment industry adopting its use over that of film stock. Not to mention compression of video files and formatting. Digital was initially a giant pain in the ass for the film industry because of how the digital focusing kept rendering foreground and background images as one without loss.

If your talking about the Blu ray bit, there used to be a competition between Blu ray and HD DVD, and HD got absolutely demolished.

Applies to any movie, really. I've never watched citizen Kane and really wished I could turn around and look in the opposite direction.
Applies to any major shift in tech. I've never wanted to read a book or listen to radio on a TV screen, it's a waste of the medium.
The best way to watch Citizen Kane in VR would be if it were playing on a screen in a virtual cinema.
Even a lot of older 3D movies aren't good in VR. In Toy Story for example, you can notice the background characters were never rendered for each eye, so it looks like cardboard cutouts moving around. Lord of the Rings looks like a crappy bass relief frescoe.
Movies that are made for VR will be a whole other thing, with a whole other set of challenges. Attracting viewer attention in a 360 degree environment is one of the new challenges.
