"Presto" is the sixth and title track from Rush's thirteenth studio album titled "Presto", recorded at Le Studio, Morin Heights, Quebec & McClear Place, Toronto, Ontario from June-August 1989 and released on November 21, 1989. Presto marked another change in Rush's sound, with guitar taking a more dominant role in the writing and a reduction in synthesizers and a return towards more guitar-driven arrangements.
Presto marks the beginning of Rush's return to a more guitar-driven sound from what is known to many as Rush's "synthesizer period" of the band's last four releases. When Lifeson and Lee discussed what musical direction to take, they agreed that the core of the band's sound, emotion, and energy had come from the guitar, something that they wanted to return to for Presto. This resulted in a much more satisfying album for Lifeson. Lifeson had felt constricted in his guitar playing since synthesizers began playing a more dominant role in the songwriting and performance on Signals (1982), which had continued through the 1980s. Lee explained that Rush wanted Presto to be "more of a singer's album, and I think you'll notice that the arrangements musically support the vocals ... Neil's lyrics to me are a lot more heartfelt. This album was a real reaction against technology in a sense. I was getting sick and tired of working with computers and synthesizers. We made a pact to stay away from strings, pianos, and organs-to stay away from digital technology. In the end, we couldn't resist using them for color."
Showing once again that the band had not yet fully shaken off their electronic 1980s era, the clichéd whirl of a synthesizer can be heard in "Presto". The song's simple chord progression fits with a lyric that at times does verge on silliness: "If I could wave my magic wand/I'd make everything alright". However, on closer inspection, the lyric contains numerous expressions of authentic wonder. The verses are a more mature approach to the magic of reality, "I am made of the dust of the stars, while the pre-chorus returns to the childlike wish for super nature. The song explores the gap between wishes and reality and considers that while some of us do our best, most could do better. Confucious' saying "It is better to radiate more light than heat" is referenced in the song, humbly revealing one of the author's own shortcomings.
While the album's title track begins with elements of soft folk-pop, the song provides plenty for the band's traditional rock fans as it develops into its blazing finale. A brilliantly succinct howling guitar solo from Lifeson precedes the song's final surface.
While "Presto" may initially seem platitudinous and in some ways pretentious, the band's history of artistic honesty, coupled with the lyric's detail makes it clear that care has been taken. "Presto" rewards repeat listens and to many fans is a much more impressive track than is first apparent.
In a contrast to previous albums Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows and Hold Your Fire, the album does not contain an overall running lyrical theme, or what Peart described as "heavy" lyrical messages, instead adopting a more loose approach with each track making its own statement. Peart used the word "response" to describe the lyrical content as a whole. "The idea that you don't go through life just looking at things. It doesn't matter if you've been all around the world - you may have seen it, but if you haven't felt it, you haven't been there." Peart added: "There are many threads and a strong motif of looking at life today and trying to act inside it."
Neil Peart: The song "Presto" reflects me and life as a theme, although I invented the scenario. Irony is also a tool I used on this album. Most times I was careful not to dramatize the situation. When you step into true fiction, you use the fiction to explain the truth and reality. (Canadian Musician 1990)
The title track "Presto" was not performed live until 2010 for the Time Machine Tour. Lifeson said the song is about "feeling more active in your heart than in your head, not having the answers to problems."
    Alex Lifeson - Guitar
Geddy Lee - Vocals, Bass, Synthesizers
    Neil Peart - Drums, Lyrics

If I could wave my magic wand...
I am made from the dust of the stars
And the oceans flow in my veins
Here I hide in the heart of the city
Like a stranger coming out of the rain
The evening plane rises up from the runway
    Over constellations of light
I look down into a million houses
And wonder what you're doing tonight
If I could wave my magic wand
    I'd make everything all right
I'm not one to believe in magic
But I sometimes have a second sight
I'm not one with a sense of proportion
When my heart still changes overnight
I had a dream of a winter garden
    A midnight rendezvous
    Silver, blue and frozen silence
What a fool I was for you
I had a dream of the open water
I was swimming away out to sea
So deep I could never touch bottom
What a fool I used to be
If I could wave my magic wand
    I'd set everybody free
I'm not one to believe in magic
Though my memory has a second sight
I'm not one to go pointing my finger
When I radiate more heat than light
    Oh, yeah!
Don't ask me, I'm just improvising
    My illusion of careless flight
Can't you see my temperature's rising
I radiate more heat than light
Don't ask me I'm just sympathizing
    My illusions a harmless flight
Can't you see my temperature's rising
I radiate more heat than light
    [Guitar Solo]
Don't ask me I'm just sympathizing
    My illusions a harmless flight
Can't you see my temperature's rising
I radiate more heat than light
I'm not one to believe in magic
But I sometimes have a second sight
I'm not one with a sense of proportion
When my heart still changes overnight
I'm not one to believe in magic
If I could wave my magic wand...

Presto was my first Rush album and I will always have a soft spot for it. Wish I'd heard more of it played live.

I'd love to see the songs from Rush in Rio on here sometime. A lot of them are hard to find anywhere on the internet

You've touched on a number of non-mainstream songs from Rush lately. That's a great thing. It's easy to get lost in the classics, especially when the catalog of hits is so vast. I am guilty myself. This is one of those songs that shouldn't be lost, so let's hope because of posts like this, it stays in airwaves of cyberspace forever. If only we could wave our magic wand...

I've been enjoying the non-mainstream songs! Some of the songs are ones that I didn't particularly care for when they came out, as they were very different than the Rush I was used to. Now I have found a new appreciation for them. You're right, Rush has a huge catalog of songs and it's easy to just concentrate on the ones that are either hits or ones you like from the start.
I think that as I have gotten older my taste for music has expanded a bit. We only have what was put out years ago to choose from, as today's music is mainly rubbish. It's great to be able to go back and pick up on the songs we sidelined and have them to enjoy.
Hopefully these songs will stay in cyberspace, at least for a good while. I've noticed that it takes time for videos like this to get hits, but suddenly the vid will just take off like crazy. Short of RUclips tanking or this channel getting shut down, these songs will be out there!
      If only...

My favorite song from 1989s "Presto", shame it was only played once on the Time Machine Tour

Was into signals and moving pictures at the time. The presto disc never reached that high song for song. When will we hear lakeside park?

Not many Rush albums came close to Moving Pictures. I doubt we'll hear a later recording of Lakeside Park that hasn't been released. I love that song!
