  • LUMIX S5 | ZERO PULSING AUTO FOCUS SETTINGS | FINALLY USEABLE | HOW TO USE AUTO FOCUS ON LUMIX S5 |
In this video I cover the 3 aspects that need to be considered when trying to get the best results from the autofocus on the Lumix S5. Resulting in very minimal pulsing and good setting suggestions for different types of filming!

Very helpful. Much of this also applies to earlier versions of the camera such as the DMC FZ300

Wow. I had to change my comment. I was writing towards the end when you changed it to -3 Sensitivity when it stopped pulsing. So, there's hope for Panasonic. I hope it works like this with the new GH6.

If you know how contrast based AF works you will know there is no escaping pulsing. You can limit it by reducing sensitivity but as soon as focal plane will be moved there will be pulsing. It's just how it works. Camera needs to take another step to check if focus is better or worse than in previous step. If it's better then repeat. If it's worse then reverse until AF algorithm will settle.

Hello, I am sick and tired of all those complaints about the “notorious bad” Pana AFC, especially with the gh5.
I just happens to have a gh5 with no VISIBLE AF issues at all 😛
So, what have I done? Yes, FHD in stead of 4k, yes 60fps, yes AI, yes I stepped up the SS, yes one area with a modest box, yes the like 709 profile. Yes, sensitivity -2/-1, speed +2/+3. So far my GH5 camera set up.
Now the lens. I have 2 options. My choise is the PL 14-140mm with a lightning fast AF motor (0.05 sec). In the old FHD days a lens of choise. Optimized for FHD. Is it “the holy grail”? NO, but we are talking AF here, don’t we? 😉
Second lens of choise, the Leica 12-60, 2.8-4.0. With this lens the G9 scored the fasted AF time ever, 0,04 sec😂 But, not the cheapest lens.
I don’t do stresstests like talking heads with a bunch of Christmas trees in the background 😅 Nor do I chase birds in flight at a 2 miles distance 😂
But I did tested my camera with incoming car traffic at city speeds and follow them at 5m distance till out of site, NO AF issues (AI remember)😮
A sort of lender of last resort now. Outside (low light) I will/can use MF, back button focus at infinity first, with the strongest visible focus peaking. I have a pretty useable focus range. If needed I switch to AFC (in time) and then back to MF. Just in case I really, really want to eliminate hunting/pulsing. But most of the time I stick to AFC. Yes, I am also lazy 😂
I do know the system AF hunts/pulses by definition. So I need my camera settings, in camera with my lens.
And now the ultimate review/test. My tv set is Samsung 65”, 4k, 10 bit. I let Samsung take care of the resolution. Viewing distance 3.5m and I am HAPPY with the result I SEE 😁
Ok, not everybody has a 4k screen. But that is only about resolution. My previous Pana FHD tv had wonderful IQ for that matter, same results as for AFC.
Final remark now. Yes, if contrast/light is an issue (low light outside) my gh5 can/will go AWOL. Light/contrast will be an issue when shooting at a large distance. I am a hobbyist, not a wedding professional. In these cases I call in the FCP cavalry to my rescue.
For those without the stamina to sit this contribution out, i can only feel very sorry. Because you did not take the time to figure out your gear. I think you are a severe case of GAS and the “one set fix all syndrome”.
I am a Pana fanboy for the video goodies/IQ and found my workaround for the AFC issues.
Just for the record. Do you know someone who bought a Sony for its IBIS 😂😂😂? If so, how much money did they put on the table?
Lots of succes with your disappointing Pana gear. Frans.

I will use the S5 mainly to film other people, documentary style. It's hard to find good advice on how to use autofocus in those circumstances.

D'you think that the lighting is giving the camera an advantage due to the high contrast.
I like the idea of a faster framerate, I'll try that. 👍

With all the years that AF has been around you would think that Panasonic would have cracked it by now - but no; mind you, I can testify that even Sony isn't up to scratch either and that's the reason why I'm currently looking for a replacement. I find that nothing is straight forward with digital cameras/'corders - it's so depressing.

The AF is not reliable whatever you do except if you are willing to never shoot 4K vlog and only in certain lighting and still objects. I love my S5 but don’t be fooled by the title.

Hi what profiles would you say work best for AF? I want to get this camera and learn color grading but for something like family videos I would probably use a profile that gives me AF given the choice and just MF for other projects

This is done with aperture. The higher the number, the more in focus. Also, a wider angle lens helps a lot.

    • @andrewdavies2109
      @andrewdavies2109 2 года назад +1

Like the other person said, use a smaller aperture- this means use a bigger f-number. Do some searches for videos about aperture and depth of field. It's nothing to do with the focus. Move away from the camera too if you can. You can see the effect of that in this video's when he leans forward the bokeh ball gets bigger.

I was literally about to buy the s5 because of its horsepower. BUT The A F.
    the A F.
    i mean for a 2k camera the A F is just unattemptable.
I compare Sony 7iii A F with s5. and its just HOLY MOLY.
ill just pay 250$ more and try to get a used lens over a brand new lens. and OVERRALL the price will be the same.
in the end dont have to worry about THE A F.
lumix is going the right way but .. they first need to conquer the god A F.
just copy SONY''s A F . its not like lumix A F system is any good, its literally drawing customers away , just like how it did to me.
almost perfect camera but the A F.
    fix the A F coding.

Rented a G9 because I had heard such good things about Panasonic video and was thinking about getting one, its absolute garbage. All my clips have a pulsing background. How are people paying thousands of dollars for this kind of crap AF performance? I have cheap, 12 year old Canon DSLRs that have better AF in video. Awful.

It's cameras for professionals who don't use much autofocus anyway. Compare with Blackmagic cameras, they don't even have AF-C. It depends on what kind of material you shoot if you need good AF or not.
