Did people really think they would make an insider-movie that only geeks understand, just to sell 100k movie tickets globally and lose all the money they invested? It's always only ever going to be a movie where parents take their 3-5 year olds and buy them tons of candy, because that's what pays their bills. Expectations are the weirdest thing to me... What would a Movie about minecraft staring Jack Black be, if not exactly what we saw in the trailer?

Was it really so hard for them to add items from the real game? The world shown in the movie is not consistent at all - anyone who plays Minecraft can tell that at first sight, the mobs look horrible like they are AI generated, its horrendous looking not funny.. It would still be possible for them to place real people in the world while keeping it non-horrible but seems the people who worked on the art have never placed Minecraft themselves. To most who actually plays Minecraft regularly it gives off a really uncanny and unsettling feelings and the fact they argued "this movie is not meant for you" after receiving Backlash from 95% of the Minecraft community is pathetic considering the current teens and young adults the people who grew up along Minecraft when they were young kids, they are the one who have long awaited for the movie, to most 9 year old today the Minecraft movie won't hold much significance..

It would be so easy to write a classic hero's journey set in Minecraft. Make Steve part of a village that gets attacked by the ender dragon or something and he goes on his hero's journey to avenge his village, they could do all the key parts mining for resources, making armor and weapons, building a base, farming endermen for pearls to then go to a nether fortress for the end portal, kill the dragon, return home as the village hero and now protector from zombies and raids etc. You don't need to reinvent the wheel just make a good film.
The thing about Minecraft is all the different types of players. Redstoners, PVPers, builders, explorers, etc. I just hope the movie can be equally as good for everyone watching, even the people who don't even play the game.

I personally am not a judge something because of a trailer since. "The Dark Knight." I wasnt a fan of hearing or seeing Heath Ledger as the joker. But i was so so wrong about the movie, its my favorite batman movie and Heath delivered. But i do have to say i agree with the llama and sheep. Too realistic. Warner Bros is having the same problem Paramount faced with Sonic. That Sonic was “creepy” and “upsetting,” that his eyes were too un-conjoined, his features too dissimilar to those of his video-game counterpart. Its a shame because Warner Bros did, Detective Pikachu, and that realism feel kept the characters features but turned the fur and movement more realistic. I think Warner Bros missed the opportunity in keeping realism but keept the block formstion like, The Lego Movie, had. The stop motion feel of lego movie made it feel that we were watching legos move around and not CGI experts making legos look realistic. Sonic and this movie is pishing chatacter to realistic that shocks us and creeps us out. You HAVE to keep the cartoon, in this case the pixel feel. Miss opportunity i feel. But as the story goes and having Jack Black as Steve i reserve judgment. But the CGI is Sonic creepy.
I remember when I heard a rumor 10 years ago that we'd get a FNAF, Minecraft and Flash movie. I gave up then and now we got a mediocre Flash movie, okay FNAF movie, but don't know if this will be good because I don't play or care much about it as an adult.

From the looks of the trailer my theory for the story is that they almost want to go in the Dwayne Johnson jumanji route where kid finds blue cube either while playing mc or in his house, gets into the game along with his family/friends, meets jackblack Steve who is actually retired. Through flashback, we see Steve's adventures. All of them team up defeat the big bad and return to the normal/human world.
Legally, they can't use the Minecraft theme I believe. The creator of the music, C418, actually stopped working with mojangs due to a rights disagreement. Mojang wanted 100% ownership, but the creator wanted the rights to his music. So now there are 3 or so new music creators for the game.
THey could've at least tried asking the new music creators because they're still a better fit for the soundtrack of this movie than prolly predictable 80s music they'd use lol

Also they could very easily just suck them into the game then animate them into Minecraft characters (like the game) but this just seems lazy. I've never played Minecraft be4 but I know a couple of people who have and I don't know if they even know about this movie. I mean I think I saw a trailer for it a while ago but who knows anyway another great video Matt keep up the gr8 work. Also just as a little bit of info for you. They've been doing other movies such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which was live action. It was completely different from the book if you know what I mean. So yeah I mean I used to play a similar game on my 3ds called Cube Creator 3D and It's very similar to Minecraft but the main charater is different.
The ghast looks like a stale marshmallow 😂 sorry, I am hungry. Who knows, maybe they will take the feedback and change things a little bit. I might watch just to see what story and lore matches with in game. As long as they don't pull some switch like, the hero was the villain all along, it may be fun to watch...
The part that bugs me most is that there is a long established history of success with various Minecraft animations on social media. Heck, Mojang hires Element Animations for their Minecraft Live animations (Element Animations! The ppl who made Villager News!). Literally could’ve made a couple phone calls and had a whole animation team ready to make a whole movie that would almost certainly be an instant box office hit.

1:51 It is not just you. From the very moment (long before the trailer) that I heard it was gonna be live action, I was worried about how in the world they were going to pull that off.
My initial reaction was something along the lines of my low expectations just dropped dramatically. I saw someone say they should have had Element Animation do this and I think that would have been the right play. They have been doing it for years and have a style down that is fun and friendly that just makes sense for the game and has become part of its branding. There’s also so much lore in Minecraft already built-into the game and fan base that a few hours on Game Theory should have given them more than enough material to write something in-game without resorting to “Jumanji…but it’s blocky”. It also felt a bit jarring as the pigs felt more cartoony than the animals. So the overall art coherence felt off to me. I know it’s a teaser trailer, but it felt like a miss just about every step of the way. Your question of if anyone on the team even played the game feels spot-on for the overall feel of the trailer. Also, I know it’s quite mild, but why did they have a character cussing right out of the gate? Who is this movie even for if they are going down that road?
This movie has been in the works longer than my son who is now 6 and loves minecraft, had me excited to take him to see it. He will still be stoked, but myself am now questioning everything. Why does jason look like a rejected actor walking of a barbie audition??????

Reading your second point just triggered the cause of the feeling I was getting from this trailer with the piglins . . . Angry Birds. The piglins remind me of the pigs from the Angry Birds Movie. That's the feeling I got seeing them with the ghasts and I couldn't place it till your comment jogged the memory to mind.
Agreed, in the scene where it looks like the characters are crafting two buckets there’s a pair of the Boots of Swiftness in the background. Also in the scene where Steve is in the nether, there’s a character in the back who has glowing eyes. My guess is that’s the necromancer because of the blue cube one of the main characters have.

Some of the tree close ups are real built sets. Also that intro song according to subtitles is a beetles song. Also jack black is wearing a blue shirt under his blue v neck so kinda hides the v neck

Me personally am excited for it. I don’t think it looks particularly good, but I like movies that are so bad they are good and this could be the biggest one of the year.
If you want a good Minecraft movie, check out the Animation vs Minecraft shorts by Alan Becker. There's no talking, it's all visual storytelling, and it's insanely good. Season 3 of Animation vs Minecraft is on par with some of Pixar's best.
The music is The Beatles btw...but absolutely agree as to why didn't they just use their established soundtrack... Reading through things over the years, I think there has been some falling out with C418 (the original music composer) because they never seem to talk about him or the original music any more
It's a little too early for me personally to tell whether it's going to be good or not. Entertaining? Probably. A good, well written story? I'd like to keep my hopes up, but I don't think it will.

I could just say I agree with it being animated and I totally think it should be more kid friendly with out the harsh language and something a kid that is 10 and under should be watching. Kids these days are getting and watching things that they shouldn’t be watching and this an example of that. As an Aunt with a 8 year old nephew and 10 year old nieces I think we should put them in front of more inspirational and fun things to watch.
I hope they pull a Sonic the Hedgehog and listen to the fans.

I've never played Minecraft be4 but I know a couple of people who have and I don't know if they even know about this movie. I mean I think I saw a trailer for it a while ago but who knows anyway another great video Matt keep up the gr8 work.
Also just as a little bit of info for you. They've been doing other movies such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which was live action. It was completely different from the book if you know what I mean. So yeah I mean I used to play a similar game on my 3ds called Cube Creator 3D and It's very similar to Minecraft but the main charater is different.

The part that bugs me most is that there is a long established history of success with various Minecraft animations on social media. Heck, Mojang hires Element Animations for their Minecraft Live animations (Element Animations! The ppl who made Villager News!). Literally could’ve made a couple phone calls and had a whole animation team ready to make a whole movie that would almost certainly be an instant box office hit.

1:51 It is not just you. From the very moment (long before the trailer) that I heard it was gonna be live action, I was worried about how in the world they were going to pull that off.
My initial reaction was something along the lines of my low expectations just dropped dramatically.
I saw someone say they should have had Element Animation do this and I think that would have been the right play. They have been doing it for years and have a style down that is fun and friendly that just makes sense for the game and has become part of its branding.
There’s also so much lore in Minecraft already built-into the game and fan base that a few hours on Game Theory should have given them more than enough material to write something in-game without resorting to “Jumanji…but it’s blocky”.
It also felt a bit jarring as the pigs felt more cartoony than the animals. So the overall art coherence felt off to me.
I know it’s a teaser trailer, but it felt like a miss just about every step of the way. Your question of if anyone on the team even played the game feels spot-on for the overall feel of the trailer.
Also, I know it’s quite mild, but why did they have a character cussing right out of the gate? Who is this movie even for if they are going down that road?
This movie is entirely just a money grab... like my God there have been minecraft fan animations, such a missed opportunity

This movie has been in the works longer than my son who is now 6 and loves minecraft, had me excited to take him to see it. He will still be stoked, but myself am now questioning everything. Why does jason look like a rejected actor walking of a barbie audition??????

Yeah in the Minecraft 1.21 update "When Pigs Fly" they gave Piglins the ability to fly.
1st) I’m not a big fan of the goofy animals
2nd) the way the piglins come in makes me feel like they are going to do a big boss battle thing which seems like every big show needs to do because of Avengers
3rd) they better have other cameos of ACTUAL MINECRAFT RUclipsRS or streamers in this movie if they are going to do a big fight
Reading your second point just triggered the cause of the feeling I was getting from this trailer with the piglins . . . Angry Birds. The piglins remind me of the pigs from the Angry Birds Movie. That's the feeling I got seeing them with the ghasts and I couldn't place it till your comment jogged the memory to mind.

Agreed, in the scene where it looks like the characters are crafting two buckets there’s a pair of the Boots of Swiftness in the background. Also in the scene where Steve is in the nether, there’s a character in the back who has glowing eyes. My guess is that’s the necromancer because of the blue cube one of the main characters have.

I am so frustrated to find out that Magical Mystery Tour by Beatles got a very very wrong opportunity to shine.
They should have hired captain sparkles or bought his idea and made a full length fallen kingdom movie fully show casing the events it was such a missed opportunity like literally everyone who played or plays Minecraft knows fallen kingdom it's an iconic piece of Minecraft now
Some of the tree close ups are real built sets. Also that intro song according to subtitles is a beetles song. Also jack black is wearing a blue shirt under his blue v neck so kinda hides the v neck

Me personally am excited for it. I don’t think it looks particularly good, but I like movies that are so bad they are good and this could be the biggest one of the year.
This has got mid-2000s-era-adaptation written all over it.
If you want a good Minecraft movie, check out the Animation vs Minecraft shorts by Alan Becker. There's no talking, it's all visual storytelling, and it's insanely good. Season 3 of Animation vs Minecraft is on par with some of Pixar's best.

Weeeelllllll! I could just say I agree with it being animated and I totally think it should be more kid friendly with out the harsh language and something a kid that is 10 and under should be watching. Kids these days are getting and watching things that they shouldn’t be watching and this an example of that. As an Aunt with a 8 year old nephew and 10 year old nieces I think we should put them in front of more inspirational and fun things to watch.
