It’s so hard. I been cycling a year now and I hate steep hills. Once I’m up, I smile and say to myself “you did it”. And then come another one and I’m like ahh fuck. Lmao
Yeah I rode that climb over 100km into a century in January at 101kg and it's an easy one to grind up in a big gear without any really steep sections. Reckon the Freddie could get his time down a lot by changing his gearing.
@@gadenhertog you certainly can although I used to like 30 seconds and then double it The clip of Freddie at the top is only a couple of seconds so I think it would be fairly inaccurate I'm guessing it was someway over 100 though 👍

A few years ago I weighed 104 kg when I got back into cycling. Now I weigh 79 kg. The other day I had to carry 20 kg up some stairs... I don't know how I even walked around in the old days... Stay fit, people!
the thing is, the weight you had was evenly (or at least more so) distributed. It wasn't all in your forearms :) Just like in this video, it's way more difficult with all the extra weight in a backpack than in the legs, torso, and everywhere. Andrew would've smoked Freddy with a good distribution of the weight. Still, great job on the weight loss, and to Freddy for his massive improvement.
The most gripping video GCN have produced in ages. I loved it. GCN have a new star in Freddie, get behind him and produce some kind of zero to hero video series. It would be fascinating (and relatable).
this is one of the most funny and interesting videos I had ever seen in the GCN videos, cause I saw the last one and I was impressed by Freddie. but now I'm blown away by his impressive improvement and performance well done. you GCN guys should get behind Freddie and use him like a lab. Freddie bike lab on this case to see how can someone improve over time I reckon a lot of people will be interested in this including my self...
Exactly! This is among the best GCN videos because we get to see ourselves, amateurs, and we get to see the crazy fitness that is a pro rider, AND we get to see a normal person. And i have to admit the most interesting data here is how FAST a normal person improves. Especially when that normal person is a 20 something bull of a guy who is going to be crazy fast if he keeps riding. That boy is impressive! My takeaway from this video is that the rider is ALWAYS the most important part of a ride, not the bike. His or her bike handling skills, weight, aero positioning and gear, and their mental emotional energy. Its a good reminder, and its why im riding a $30 garage sale bike before buying the next generation of Canyon Lux for multiple thousands. Way to go Freddie! I'm right there with you as a big fellow. I love the downhills where I get to turn all of that potential energy I stored into kinetic energy.
I would be more likely to sign up to one of the 4-6 week long 'train with' series that GCN produces with Freddie than with former Pros like Connor.... (Physically I have more in common with Freddie..) Would also be interested to see some sort of attempt to measure his progression over 12+ months. could be a mini series in this with a number of 'newbies'. Reckon there would be a diminishing return after initial big leaps due to improved technique, bike fit, cadence, weight loss etc then interesting to see where the next set of gains come from....
Agreed. One of the big problems with GCN (and other content creators) is that it's heavily geared to pro-cycling... I'm mean apart from Ollie, they're all ex-pro's riding £10K bikes and even Ollie is always on a superbike. It also tends to be about riding as fast as possible, which is OK, but cycling also brings many other joys... which is probably why I like the Mark Beaumont videos.
Oh my goodness, Freddie was really inspiring especially comparing his effort in part 1 vs. part 2. Really wondered what he has done in detail to improve his PB. As a fellow big size fella, you have my salute!
If he's anything like me (a now former big guy), I would say that he's followed the Eddie Merckx school of philosophy... "Ride your bike, ride your bike, ride your bike!"
This was way more entertaining than I was expecting. Well done all of you! Great to see that Freddie has improved his fitness - 300W average is mighty impressive and he probably shouldn't count as a beginner any more! 😝
@5:45 "This is the same point he caught me last time".. but.. we saw from the earliest minutes that there isn't that much of a weight difference between Ollie and Andrew, and Andrew stil producing almost twice the power. So Ollie had no chance from the start :).
I think Freddie's been taking some "asthma" medication between the last race and this one. Quite mind blowing how Andrew managed to even get up the hill, never mind do it in 9 minutes. Considering he couldn't lift the rucksack with one hand. Nothing short of incredible.
Yes and, them adding extra weight on the pro is not the way to balance the race. Its like putting your fat weight on the pro. His muscle strength and weight is his earning. Your fat (or dead creatine water mass) is your spending.
Instead of the “asthma” medicine, it might’ve been the circumstances + more motivation. Back in high school, my teacher used to force us to do the mile run once every two weeks two months leading up our state fitness test. My time was terrible, around 15 minutes the entire two months because I didn’t care. When the actual test came, from pure motivation to maintain my grade I did the mile roughly 4 or 5 minutes faster.
Man I'm so pumped by this result. Gives me some hope being a heavy rider who lives in a hilly area. Looking to lose some weight this spring, can't wait to see what kind of improvement i can look forward to.
Go on Freddie!! What a star. What would be great is if you could follow Freddie's progress over the months via various challenges like this one, or TT (bet he would beat Si).

Love this follow up video - thanks guys. Really motivating stuff! One of the things I love about cyclists is that no matter what level you’re riding at, they always encourage you. I have amazing cycling friends who have helped me through lockdown, and now I’m back into cycling again after many years off the bike! I am loving it. Am going up Bannerdown for the first time today! 🚴🏻♀️🤞
Amazing effort and improvement by Freddie! Soon he’ll be ready to take on Si. What ever happened to newbie George, star of the “How long can you hold world hour record pace?” and “How hard is it to ride on the cobbles of Paris Roubaix?” And how about a future cameo of Ollie’s plant - was it a COVID victim or did it move on to greener pastures?
Loved every minute of this. An entertainment treat. Mega kudos to all three for taking part, but especially Freddie, although like many others I was willing him to change gear towards the top, but he nailed the "sprint" finish.
Yes, more Freddie content! Awesome to see how drastic the initial improvements are when you commit to cycling. Seeing his improvement brings back memories when I started as overweight and out of shape. Big climbs going for a time wasn't even a consideration. Then one day I completed the big climb, then a year later I took 25% out of that time. Keep at it Freddie!
Amazing really. Really good that you guys stuck with the suggestion of keeping Freddie in. Sometimes, it's just hard to relate to see ya'll talking, breaking each other's balls, and cackling while doing a climb / at a fast pace. So seeing Freddie actually struggle like I would when climbing a hill, makes it so relatable, even his improvement is a motivation to be the same. Still though of course, Andrew Feather is an absolute legend, he really is worthy of the namesake of Feather.
Oh backpacks and bike. If you do another in the future I HIGHLY suggest using the belly band. I have commuted for 5 years on my road big with a 36L bag. Having that extra point of contact for the bag around the waist really helps with the swinging and shifting across your back.
Chapeau Freddie, not just for the win and the PB, but also the weight loss... and catching the cycling bug! I did Bannerdown for the first time the other day... it's a really good climb. I did it in 11:57 for the Strava segment, though I was pacing myself as I'd never done it before and I had also just ridden 35 miles to get there. I would need carry around 7kg of ballast and with that I reckon I'd be struggling to break 10 minutes, though I'm pretty sure I could do that when fresh and without the ballast.
Freddie's determination and commitment is great to watch and that sprint finish had me punching the air. One of the best and inspiring videos of seen for a while. Coincidently I had a thought yesterday about having weight categories on Stravas KOM segments. Being new to cycling I had a bit of a go at a KOM the other day and found that obviously a lot of the people up the leader ranks are weighing between 60kg and 70kg. As a 83kg rider I would like to know how I fair against other riders of a similar weight.
Way to go Freddie! Thank you for the inclusion of a beginner and his progression. I'd be interested to see his progress over the year and what he tackles for training and rides. Great show.
I just love Freddie, he is my hero! I did the Le Col de Bannerdown a few weeks ago on my Winter bike and only did 12:39. I will switch to my climbing bike and repeat, MUST get under 11 minutes. Hats off to Andrew Feather for taking part, a real good sport. Thanks, great video!
Brilliant idea... Wish you showed the beginner previous ride compared to amateur and professional this time... His previous is a good reference for understanding how much the weight makes difference because this time he has improved himself
One of the most informative videos! Well, weight balance aside (this wasn’t really a scientific test), the climb does show very well where the difference comes from (how power difference and weight difference combine together). Really, really thank you!
That was excellent. As someone who's somewhere between a beginner and amateur and with a pretty weighty bike (plus a few extra pounds), it's nice to see the playing field levelled somewhat for once!
Bro I'm the exact same weight as Freddie WAS in the previous video, so to see him progress this much is great. I just got my first bike after 21 years of not cycling and I'm dearly looking forward to it.
Great Video. This video is very inspirational to people just starting or trying to loose weight. Cycling may be the best sport for seeing amazing change with some repeated effort for those who need encouragement.
More Freddie!!! As other people that have stated already, I'd love to see a training plan for Freddie and see how much he can improve. Nice job Freddie!!
While the idea is good, the implementation doesn't seem all that sound to me. Ballast should've been calculated to even out W/kg IMO Edit: weight vests should give a better balance while riding
I was a bit surprised they didn't add any weight to the bike. Even something easy, like two water bottles, would have meant a bit less weight on the back.
What do you expect when evening out W/kg? If you then put them all on the same bike they will be completing the ride in about the same time (only difference beeing aerodynamic drag)
I heartily agree. I would be much more interested in knowing the results to an even w/kg test. only problem I foresee is poor Andrew having to carry 50+ kg 😂
Freddy: "I can actually taste blood".............Yep, you didn't leave anything in the tank. Bravo Sir! 👍 As of March 27 2021, 58 down votes, means 58 people who bet on Ollie.
Weight distribution, the fact that Freddie weight was not just metals on the back but in fact glycogen, water and muscles and the fact that he's used to he's own weight definitely played a role here. It's a fun experiment but it doesn't really mean anything. So I know that it was all done for fun and games but what I really took out from this is that Andrew is a BEAST.
Well done to Freddie! His progress is a textbook example on how much one can achieve when one dedicates oneself to the training. Fast and large gains are to be expected when you stick at it at the beginning. When that levels out then it is time to shift something in training to get back to substantial gains. When Freddie is at the point of the term "marginal gains" then he is probably cycling at the peak of his physical ability. I absolutely encourage GCN to get Freddie on board for some updates to his training and progress.
Who do you think will be the fastest?
Of course the pro 👍😁
Having carefully examined the results, it has been determined that Ollie will try anything to win a race. But, he was dropped again.

That was a great video!! Great work guys
Brilliant gains and a even more brilliant finish by Freddie!
GCN really is the coolest show. These challenges are awesome fun to watch!
Glad you enjoyed it 🙌 We've been enjoying some fun challenges recently! 👉 ruclips.net/video/_q23eOGtJU8/видео.html
Congratulations to Freddy. Good job and great improvement.👍👍 We need to see more Freddy on GCN.
Brilliant idea... Wish you showed the beginner previous ride compared to amateur and professional this time... His previous is a good reference for understanding how much the weight makes difference because this time he has improved himself
Good job guys. Very entertaining video as usual
Great video! We need more of freddie on the channel.
Andrew is a MONSTER, the guy was carrying weight he couldn't even lift, passed both ollie and freddy on the climb, and he wasn't even on a carbon bike
Very inspiring! I'm about a packpack like that overweight... Starting to make plans
Amazing test results! Surprisingly accurate!
Amazing job Freddy! More from him no doubt i hope!
Eddie sprinting at the end made me cheer and shout gooo mate well done bro
That is some crazy improvement in time!!!!!! Well done...
Keep it going freddie maybe we will get gcn following your emprovment over time!!
That final sprint for the win. Bravo Freddie!
Nice one Fredster! Very inspiring to myself
While the idea is good, the implementation doesn't seem all that sound to me. Ballast should've been calculated to even out W/kg IMO
Edit: weight vests should give a better balance while riding
I was a bit surprised they didn't add any weight to the bike. Even something easy, like two water bottles, would have meant a bit less weight on the back.
What do you expect when evening out W/kg? If you then put them all on the same bike they will be completing the ride in about the same time (only difference beeing aerodynamic drag)
@@wolfgang_658 I don't think it'll be that simple ...
5:04-5:13 What an awesome footage and good music too!
Nice work Freddie. Genuinely great work man!
I absolutely encourage GCN to get Freddie on board for some updates to his training and progress.
this was an amazing video.. haha. good handicap race!! Must have been terrible for the (lower) back!
Awesome video guys!!
I'm going to add my voice to the multitude - more from Freddie. That's content we need!
This was fantastic! Great job Freddie!!
