I adored these golden book shows. Every time I went to my grandmas house (once a month or so) I couldn’t wait to pop these videos in the VHS machine. Pollys pet, Peter Rabbit, the little red hen, gingerbread man. Loved them ❤️
I grew up watching this and completely forgot about it. I stumbled across the book at a library book sale this weekend and vividly remembered the car and couldn't figure it out. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO❤ lol to quote my bf "I unlocked a core memory" I'm so happy I remember this again 💖
Polly's Pet should've been an Animated Series on TV back in the day. I definitely had the book when I was a child. But after watching this it was interactive. That cat is almost better than Garfield and Heathcliff put together.
Both this and Peter Rabbit were the first two cartoons I ever saw as a 1-2 year old. I personally found them to be creepy due to the minimal animation, and all this time it has lived in the depths of my mind trying to resurface. Seeing it again for the first time in 30 years still evokes a slight feeling of dread.
As a toddler/small child the one part that terrified me were the shadowy figures in the windows/the cats shadowy appearance/an alley cats glowing eyes in the dark.
totally! and do you remember the little bumpers they had between each cartoon. one was a kid reading a book, and the objects come off the page...and the other, the kid is eating pop corn in front of the tv, and a monster comes and sits down. and they laugh. now THAT was a blast from the past!
+Pamela Schonour Yes, that's great that he went back to Polly and her brother. Also yes, he did say from 7:17-7:20 that he misses Polly and her brother but, I think the reason he said that was because, he did mention from 7:04-7:11 that nobody cares for him and that he's all alone. (While he didn't appreciate Polly and her brother picking on him and causing him to get hurt, he probably was at least happy that they paid attention to him).
0:00 - Nurse Stimpy to the rescue! I, Nurse Stimpy, do solemnly swear by the Sacred Bedpan to fix the patient and ease his wretched suffering, even until all hope is gone!
@hornean Also, how the telephone at 7:40 to 7:46 was orange in the book version, and it became black on the video, reminds me that tomorrow is Halloween (orange and black are traditional colors for that holiday).
It was funny from 8:27-8:30 with the cab driver saying "where too folks" with them responding "home please" where the cab driver probably said "where's home?"
@@toniroberts8117 What do you mean what about the airline speaker on what he said from 3:54-4:01? That's just an announcement for everyone to board the airplane. I just found it funny when Polly, her brother, and the cat said "home please" when the cab driver asked where he should take them. It's kind of like if a person was taking a cab to school and the cab driver asked where he/she should take them with the passenger saying "to school please" a cab driver would ask either the name of the school and/or the address to the school.
afriendofbean I thought the “up north” was funny because at no time did the cat (or anyone else) say where the plane went. All references to a place call it “up north”. You’d have better luck getting a cab to take you home without saying where it is than find a flight or town called “up north” lol. Besides that might be the same cabbie that picked the kids up from home and they told him to wait 😉
What about when kitty called and just said hello and the kids instantly start shouting “he wants to come home”!! 😆 Wow, I’m thinking WAY too much into a 35 year old video made for toddlers lol
Pretty sad that this story is the norm given the rise in pet negligence and/or abuse. Running away may not be a solution but neither is being timid and letting the bully get away.
Zak Wolf, since Amy Rosenberg wrote "1 to 100 Busy Counting Book" that I had as a kid which came from Building 19, did any of your childhood books come from Building 19?
@misspinkpunkykat That has nothing to do with this, and I wasn't even talking about that. I was talking about that bit from 9:17 to 9:28 where Polly's Pet doesn't have the pacifier in his mouth like he did in the original book.
Yeah I know, right? I thought of this the "Golden Book" collection V.H.S I had and sure enough... the 3 stories are all up here. Ah RUclips ^_^ I'm 28 now, but I remember this... so long ago...
One other thing: there's something with those no scratching/biting rules--pets can't read. Besides, don't Polly and her brother know that when they have a pet, they also have a responsibility?
@hornean Exactly. If Polly and her brother hadn't been so rough with him, he wouldn't have run away from home. It was their fault because they're humans and he's a cat.
@BKDBrian2 Isn't "pingas" just a made up word that means nothing because someone misheard the villian from Sonic the Hedgehog say, "SnooPING AS usual?"
@musicbox193 They had to break their word because they realized that ice cream and peanut brittle are not healthy for a cat and that's why they feed him cat food instead (because he IS a cat).

I actually had to order new (used) VHS copies of these on eBay several years ago. Thank goodness for eBay. 👍

I think I go through these old Golden Book videos just to see how much of the stock music was also used in Ren & Stimpy and Spongebob.

Wow, I remember watching this as a kid with my sister. We had a cat who ran away but never came home.
I found the APM music at 6:47 when Polly's Pet discovers that no one up north cares about him. It's called "Out Of Work Blues" composed by Peter Cork.

@@emiliopolanco8587 That is the right composer, but that's the wrong song.
Andrew Horne please give a link.
wow! my sister and I were trying to remember this story. i can't believe it's made it to youtube! thanks!
I remember this Golden Book and I always imagined Polly’s Pet if it was ever made into a movie would be voiced by Nathan Lane.
This story brings back memories from when I was a boy, I used to love reading this during bed time
wow, I haven't' seen this since the early 80s!!! Thank you for the upload!!! and thank you RUclips for closest thing to a time machine we have! :)

Ben Schyan I remember those! The book was before this “Polly’s Pet” presentation and the TV/monster bit was afterward.
I had no idea this was a cartoon. I used to have this book.
It's cool how the flight attendant always expected he was going to learn a lesson
I'm glad the cat went back home. He missed the kids when he went up north.

9:10 he has a pacifier in his mouth but 9:17-9:28 it is gone; that last illustration in the book clearly shows him with the pacifier IIRC.
