- It's a pleasure to present to you an early Golden Book Video Classic, "Scuffy the Tugboat and Other Stories" (formerly released as "3 Favorite Stories"). This is one of the first ones ever produced!
This part features the classic story "Scuffy the Tugboat." "What is a shiny red tugboat supposed to do?" wonders Scuffy. Then Nicky takes him home from the quiet toy shop, and Scuffy discovers the adventure-filled world of imaginary play!
Also note how the story was altered quite a bit (i.e. redrawing Scuffy, making his adventure all a fantasy/dream sequence.)
Special thanks to doughnutser256 for supplying the video!

I still remember that whistle theme after all these years 😁
My folks had this on vhs 30+ years ago. Cant tell ya why it crossed my mind today but i still remember this and the toot toot.
Crazy I still remember after all these years
@@johnmitchell9471
I used to have the VHS tape back in 85, I was 4 at the time. I used to hate it but because of it’s very very VERY limited animation
@@jameselphingstone3104 I used have this & Super Grover
OMG yes!!! I recently heard a short blip of this whistle song playing in the background on some random youtube video and immediately recognized it after all these years. I had to look this up to make sure it was the same whistle tune, and sure enough it was! Wish I knew the name of this song. Would love to have this as my ringtone. 😂
This was my favorite Goldenbook cartoon as a kid, along with my favorite Goldenbook story. Thanks for the upload! :)
This story brings back memories from when I was a boy. I used to enjoy reading along to this story on a cassette tape

I remember this as a little girl!! I was only 4 years old and watched this show alot!! Childhood memories!!
Just remember kids, courage comes from within. And you're bravest when you face your worst fear.
.......no words to many memories. I was like 5. I still whistle the tune scuffy sings til this day. I had this, follow that bird and moon walker on rotation in the vcr
I remember watching this. Even though this style of cartoon is primitive, it is somewhat magical and it would be nice if cartoons would return to this from time to time.
They could probably now produce them using Adobe Animate or Toon Boom Harmony or similar software, compared to the analog cutout and cel techniques seen here.
Fantastic! Couldn't get enough of this as a small child, and now find myself faced with soon becoming a dad. Really glad I'll be able to share this with my tiny sailor!

It's 5 years later. The wife divorced him and has full custody and now living in his house while banging his best friend. Don't get married kids.

This scared the shit out of me as a child.
+Maddie Hood your hot!!
That's how every illustrated on almost every Golden Book Videos are made for. For animation, they can use silhouettes for some special movements.
Thank you so much for posting this! I used to have the Golden Book VHS with this Scuffy video, "What Was That!" with the 3 bears, and Theodore Mouse Goes to Sea! Such wonderful memories of those carefree childhood days :)
These three stories were used on “Reading Rainbow”.
"Wonder where the brook will take me?"
HELL.
Water way to hell
@@jockdouglass3824 Indeed. He gets stuck in a storm and the water's rising.
My grandma had these collection for me when I was a little girl back in the 80s. Loved watching this movie with my grandma
I CANNOT believe I found this!! I loved this VHS soooooo much and I lost it for years!! I love reminiscing of my childhood!!!
Watched this on tape in 1989 when i was five years old at my grandmas house. Seeing this as an adult reminds me of a world without covid, before sars and world trade center disaster. I felt bad for Scruffy when he got lost.
I watched this at my grandparents house. Sigh.....I miss them so much 😢
@TheZoidberg312 Sorry for your loss. My grandparents passed away in 2020.
I had this on VHS along with a couple of others. I used to watch this when I was about 7-8 years old I think. 36 now, time flies wowee. Just randomly remembered it and here I am, might try watch some of it see how we go as an adult haha. Bring back some childhood memories.
Not seen that since I was young so it's been a long time, can't believe I remembered it after all this time and I still love watching it, When I was a child I would watch this with my little brother and he loved it, even had a little boat of his own to play with.
i know its not normal as a grown adult that i feel so bad for scuffy during the storm
Yes I do too.
that part made me scared as well..... dam why am i here :(
Frightened me too when I was a kid. Certainly was my least favorite part of the cartoon.
I was born in 1948. I made my mother read Scuffy every day for many years. Now, I'm a Ph.D. and Professor in Maritime History. Scuff is still my favorite maritime book. I lectured on the Tao in maritime literature - SCUFFY.
Another one of my favorite childhood stories of Scuffy the Tugboat.
Gosh this brings back memories from my childhood. I had this on VHS. Awesome!
This was the first Golden Book Video release of this, and these were loosely based off of Little Golden Book classics, and it was one of the so-called Motion Comics with illustrations, just like they did with “Marvel Super Heroes” TV show back in 1966 where the Marvel Superheroes like Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk and Sub Mariner had their early attempts at motion comics in a style of a comic book.
This was three years before “My Little Pony” G1 and “Moon Dreamers” came along where they put out episodes from “My Little Pony & Friends” with the two shows and ended up on VHS in multiple volumes, that was around 1988, and Hasbro licensed them to Golden Book Video, and the two were produced by Sunbow/Marvel Productions.
I am so happy I found this, this and the Poky Little Puppy revolved around my entire childhood
Scruffy the tugboat was always a favorite storybook of mine from 1959 when I was 5 years old, I read the story to my children when they were small and it's a must read book to your children & grandchildren.
This book was also my father's favorite golden book along with Tootle. As an adult, this is one of my favorite Golden books.
8:42 nice ending theme to scuffy the tugboat.🎵🎶🎵.
I remember this book and the same author and illustrator that wrote Tootle. This is my favorite golden book.
I still have my vhs of this. great video from my childhood. Thanks for uploading!
This was my favourite story and video as a child!!!
I loved this and Richard Scarry’s Old MacDonald and other tales.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR FINDING THIS!!!
Scuffy!!!! I loved this as a child and even now as an adult.
1:32 - That music was also heard in the 1996 home video, "Toddler Takes!"
Scuffy reminds me of characters from Tugs.
It was the music from the “Candy Land” commercial.
Had this movie when I was like three or four. Man I miss the 80s
I had the book and tape as a kid. I enjoyed it.
Amazing memories. I love this

1:43 I LOVE THIS BOAT WHISTLE!!!!! 🚢
I truly believe that my (now cured) boat phobia was a result of this chuffing tugboat.
I remember this as a kid!
OH MY GOSH!! MY LITERAL CHILDHOOD!!!
If only they made a Golden Books video dedicated to Tootle the train
Thanks for uploading! I have this video but no longer have a VCR, so I'm happy I stumbled upon this!
How amazing that it says "Gertrude" at 8:47-8:55 that's a coincidence because my friends and I performed Seussical last year!
This was my favorite when I was a kid!!
i used to listen to this everytime took a bath at my grandmas! :)
You're hot!!
I remember this story and what was that was on Disneys Pinocchio VHS 📼
underrated boat
I'm bothered by the fact that I'm like #666, but I was 3 when this came out and I'm 40 now. TOTALLY forgot about it. What a trip
They should have used that “goooodbyyyyyeee” from the fish as the logout sound on AOL
At 5:03, Scuffy makes a subtle reference to the next story after this on this VHS tape!!!
5:03
As much as I loved these videos to death as a little kid back in the day, this had to be the cheapest animation in the world. What was their budget, a nickel?
Naw, the animation budget was probably no more than $40 :P

It was good enough to serve its purpose. You loved these videos to death as a little kid. As did I. ☺️

Don't be afraid Scuffy and remember it's only a dream. Also remember this old saying and that saying is There's nothing to fear but fear itself.
I remember Yoshi wanting to eat that 9:21 blue fish on one of those Golden Book Video Killers episodes!
7:00 Hey Look It’s Ten Cents
Imagine sucffy in TUGS 1988-1989.🤔
I just got here from Little Golden Book Land! I completely forgot about this!
Gotta love the irony of the the times.. The disclaimer.
Nostalgia hit me so fucking hard. I was 4 when I first watched this.
Scuffy the little tugboat is cute
Dear Lord what was I as a 3 year old? I have a feeling I was crazy.

I have a "Scuffy The Tugboat" toy. However, It is a plush toy.
What cover does your Scuffy the Tugboat vhs have? Because I remember seeing a cover with the yellow border, and Scuffy in the river.
Does This Tape Have The WSOD At The End?
Yep.
@@ZakWolf Same as on my Golden Book Video VHS of “My Little Pony” G1 in all eight volumes.

Can someone please tell me where I can I get that catchy flute jingle that is in this video...it was also present in the movie super fuzz along with the candyland board game commercial. A name of this jingle to start with want to use a ring tone...please..been driving me nuts trying to find it for years in raw state without people talking in the background
nostalgia'd so hard
Aye! But Scuffy was brave!
Scuffy sounds like Sarah Lynn from Bojack Horseman lol
When I was little, I had mistaken this cartoon for Little Toot the tugboat! When I watched this at home when my dad rented it, I realized I had picked the wrong tugboat cartoon. But still, I thought this cartoon was kind of cute, just not as entertaining as Little Toot.
what did you use to rip this?
little toot the very best
Think you can send me the cover by email? Because I haven't seen it in such a long time; I only saw it once when I was a kid, when I rented the vhs from a video store close to my area... but that was it. :(
2:29 why did the shower turn on
Does anyone remember the story of a train that ran away? She carried passengers with a baggage car and her engineer loved her and went out to look for her?
Who voices the character's, they sound very familiar?
