Wow, 500,000 people! That must have been an electrifying experience, especially being just 70 meters from the stage. What an incredible memory to cherish from 21 years ago!
I like seeing this version of Spirit of Radio including the instrumental intro cover of Paint it Black from the Rolling Stones. This was part of a benefit to support Toronto after the city's SARS outbreak. The Rolling Stones were the main act among several excellent supporting acts.
What a special performance, especially with the "Paint it Black" intro! It's amazing how music brought everyone together to support Toronto after the SARS outbreak. A great reminder of the power of live music and the sense of community it can create. 🌟🎶
Neil wrote "The Spirit Of Radio" as a tribute to local radio station CFNY, which he'd often listen to on his daily commute and whose looser format he found inspiring. The transitions were meant to represent listening to the radio in 1980 when you could find different genres of misic simply by turning a knob, and the opening riff was meant to represent the static between stations. For another top performance off Permanent Waves, I'd like to recommend "Freewill" from Exit Stage Left. Have a beautiful evening, and Rush on! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐
That's such a cool piece of Rush ! "The Spirit of Radio" really does capture the essence of radio's unique magic at the time. Neil's genius in representing the randomness of flipping through stations is brilliant. Thanks for recommending "Freewill" from Exit... Stage Left, Wishing you a wonderful evening as well. Rush on! 🎶
This performance by RUSH was part of a music festival in Toronto that also included AC/DC and The Rolling Stones. What an incredible show! I have seen RUSH a number of times and this song is always a favorite! ☮☮
Geddy [singer, bass, keyboard] and Alex met and became friends at the age of 12. After Neil joined the band after their 2 album and started writing all the bands lyrics. To see the drummer Neil Peart at his peak (he's considered on of the greatest rock drummers of all time. Check out on youtube Rush's live solo in Frankfurt Germany. A 9 minute long drum solo played on over 70 percussion instruments.
Such an incredible journey for Geddy, Alex, and Neil! Their friendship and chemistry are legendary. Neil Peart’s drumming is truly unparalleled, and that 9-minute solo in Frankfurt is a must-watch! It’s mind-blowing how he brought so much power and finesse to Rush’s music. 🥁🔥🎶
Cool! The song they start out playing is "Paint It Black" by The Rolling Stones. Rush released "Spirit of Radio" when I was thirteen or thereabouts. A buddy's older brother had already turned my friends and me on to their 2112 album, among others, so we were excited when they released a new album, Permanent Waves, that year. The lyrics of "Spirit of Radio" are more or less about the feeling of freedom that people get from listening to music on the radio. And the reggae bits are there on the studio version as well. When you're ready for more from Rush also check out "Freewill", "Limelight", "Red Barchetta", and "Closer to the Heart". And for an instrumental from them also check out "La Villa Strangiato".
What an amazing memory of discovering Rush! "Spirit of Radio" really captures that freedom and connection music brings. Thanks for the song recommendations-We'll definitely check out
