The sample is from prog-rock KING Crimson, a monarch being a person with (without a constitution) unlimited POWER. Kayne is MANY things, but I don’t doubt he’s intelligent.
I'm an atheist, and this song still resonates - especially the opening line about being at war "with ourselves". Shows that good writing can make any topic worthwhile.
Same. It's a powerful song that shows the power of belief. It doesn't matter what you believe, as long as it helps you without hurting others, and you're willing to stand up for it.
As far as I'm concerned most religions are very metaphorical and that seems to translate to songwriting. As a strict atheist I find a lot of Christian musicians can write great music if they don't get too literal.
Wow. Listened to the college drop out, for the first time in years, on the way to work and now he uploads this. Clearly RC has tapped my phone and is keeping tabs on me. Keep asking questions
Our Founding Liars RC works for the secret lizard corporation and he's trying to manipulate certain people with songs that they heard recently to lure them into joining his evil company. Keep asking questions
OOOOR y'all both bought into the corporate marketing of pop stars and are just listening to the same 10 artists that everyone else is listening to. It's less coincidence than it is limited choice (of your own making)
As a Jewish person, I absolutely adore this song. It highlights, to me, what religion should be about: the urge to believe in the inherent goodness of humanity. Be it through Jesus, another prophet or just one’s own thinking, having something to let you know that anyone, even monstrous, bigoted ones, CAN repent if they choose to. It’s never too late.
You missed the point of Kathy Lee. She wasn’t successful after leaving the show...you kept showing Kelly in the clips that is the woman who replaced Kathy lee. Great review! You da best!
The line about Kathy Lee needing Regis, refers to her career tanking after she decided to leave the show. She thought she could do better by herself, but she was wrong. Kathy Lee needed Regis. He was fully aware of everything you mentioned...
Ghostwriter is a writer who isn't being credited, and the artist who he wrote for claims, that they have written it themself. A writer is just a writer who is given credit for writing the lyric. Kanye always credits his writers, and doesn't claim that he has written the songs himself. There is nothing wrong with having writers, as long as you give credit. It seems like people have just forgotten the meanig for the GHOST in ghostwriter :DD
Twisted gambit EXACTLY!! Drake uses his "Mixtapes" as an excuse to hide creditation. No one is under the impression that Wayne got help to write the Dedication Series
I’m not religious, but I think your ability to be honest and talk about your faith while not alienating or trying to change anyone is great. It’s refreshing to find a content creator who I enjoy and respect so much who is religious.
As an atheist and not a person who doesn't like Kanye I can appretiate this song. I think it highlights the best parts of Christianity. The parts that reach out to the poor or the sick without being condescending. But it's telling when kaynes arguably best song wasn't wasn't written by him
This song really highlights the problem that I have with so many contemporary Christian artists: they are doing exactly what you’re told *not* to do, which is preach to the choir. My Christian mom complained that it contained swear words, and I pointed out that it’s for those who AREN’T “saved”. In my opinion, I’m agnostic and care about others and don’t care about the afterlife and appeasing a God who is as best indifferent to my existence. Say what you will about Kayne West (and he has A LOT of issues), but this song didn’t do that. The failure of “Jesus Is King” is it DOES preach to the choir.
I think that Jesus Walks is a really important song in Kanye's discography, it really impacted me aswell as a young Christian. It's been interesting to see Kanye's walk with God aswell. Very inspirational person
Not gonna lie- putting "even strippers" with drug dealers and murderers made me laugh. The girls just working! No one's getting hurt! Like damn Ye the strippers didn't do anything yet the delivery makes it seem like he thinks they're somehow worse lol
Those are looked at sins, But Jesus looked at those people as mislead, he hang out with people who did stuff of that regard. So he's saying, "Jesus believed that those people could be saved, so don't twist his message and think that they are evil." That's the point.
I just realized RapCritic is younger than myself. He said he wasn’t even in high school when this came out. I was already in high school when this was out. I’m old! 🤦🏿♂️. Now we just need a Graduation review.
The Jerome line in Bound 2 is a also a reference to his previous use of the name as a synonym for a "stereotypical" "african american". So, it's not just asking what a fictional character would think.
innewyorkimillyrock thank you! He did the same thing somewhere else and it drove me nuts xD and as Michael Maldonado pointed out Kanye references this character in Gorgeous. Rare miss Rap Critic :P
Kanye shopped "Jesus Walks" to multiple A&Rs and they rejected him. Fast forward to Kanye dropping his first album under the ROC, and it was a CLASSIC.
I haven’t seen Three Billboards, but wasn’t the main criticism that the Klansman character was redeemed without actually going through an arc to confront his racism?
RC: You're biased. I am also. Song moved me too. 6/5 seems fair really - there is another consideration I am going to offer here. That Kathy Lee needed Regis, as once she was no longer there? She fell out of the cultural spotlight. Regis, like Jesus, could continue on. And not just as a handy rhyme. Kelly stepped in, but then Regis left. You even state at 6:37 that you did not know it was still going after Regis left. -Kathy Lee- *needed* Regis .. When he left, you stopped watching/being aware. Yes, he performed in front of Regis and Kelly, and he didn't change the lyric. Kelly *didn't need Regis* - she proved that. Kathy Lee did. Now apply that dynamic to The Person of Faith / Jesus / The Removal of Values in the reality of making money. Which then goes into the admission of "If this takes away from my spins" If I choose to have Faith then I forgo fame/money If I walk away from Jesus, there will still be money, and material gain, but not the impact that being next to Jesus gives me. Thus yes, Kathy Lee did need Regis. The same way that the song states that he needs Jesus. It's not a moldy banana, it's a bold statement that without the anchor of Faith that you'd need someone to IMDB your name for the world to know your deeds. If they were of any note in this world. Jesus, in the context of the metaphor, gives meaning and a Co-Host to life itself. Just my take on the concept. As for the hair? You look incredibly warm and friendly in this video. Before it was Professionalism/Authority/Friendly Now you're more 'Warm' as the 'Inner Light' of a 'Good Soul' kind of vibe Now off to go listen to Jesus Walks again.
Coincidentally, out of all the lines in this song, the the lyric "The way Kathy Lee needed Regis that's the way I need Jesus!" is the one that always gets stuck in my head.
I thought he was saying Kathy Lee needed Regis. Because she was the one replaced by Kelly and we didnt hear from her at all around the time. Now she is on GMA or whatever so it still didnt age well.
That Kathie Lee and Regis line always makes me laugh now mostly for how corny the comparison is and how Kathie Lee is doing well now on the Today Show. I stopped caring about the Live Show after Regis left in 2011 but I always know it’s still on since they still advertise it a lot where I live in New York.
I'm glad you're doing a review and analysis of a song you really wanted to talk about, rather than a reaction to a song suggestion. This feels a lot more real, and I hope you bring back the channel to this style:)
Man you're so right. I loved this song so much when I was I grade seven. The people Jesus came to save were not the ones who think they're already saved.
I like people who bring up "poop dee scoop" like it somehow proves Kanye is dumb. Yeah, he made up a nonsense phrase in one of his songs that went viral immediately and built word-of-mouth about the three albums he was releasing, all of which received acclaim. He proved he can say literal gibberish into the mic and people will talk about it for months. God, what an idiot.
Khadijah Johnson That's because it's literally a troll song.He literally is making you expect fire verses ("the next verse though? BARS!!!!!") and subverts your expectations immediately. Its downright genius EDIT:It's also just one loosie. Ye and KIDS SEE GHOSTS are amazing and lack any semblance of stupid bars.
This was a really good video! Keep it up RC. We love your reviews and meaning behind the songs. College dropout and graduation were what I listened to during my college years before kanye went krazye.
Kanye before his ego had completely consumed him was good shit. (and Dark Twisted Fantasy was good, too, and I actually really like Kids See Ghosts) I'm an atheist and I can jam to this song.
Jesus Walks is not a religious song. The song is making a point that you should make songs and represent you and your people and take a stand, and not to let people you have never met before make you compromise your being for monetary gain. That's why you can be an atheist and jam to this song
Rap critic I would just like to say one thing. This video changed my whole outlook on life. Before this I always saw Jesus as a pure man who never touched sin like an angel but after your video I truly saw him as what he really was a man. A holy man who brought the word of God but a human like any one of us. I cannot thank you enough for enlightening me to the truth.
My respect for RC has grown twofold thanks to this video: The excellent-as-always review The fact that he didn't extend the video another 3 seconds for ad revenue
When I was a kid, a christian boy and his brother came to my house and was sorting through his newly downloaded limewire music, this song played, I loved it but he hated it thinking the swear words made it blasphemy, but that song connected to my soul and I showed the video to my parents, they loved the message as they understood the song was trying to reach to those of us with troubled souls or troubled steps, I loved watching your video as I rediscovered this gem of my childhood while working on a project. This song is definitely a classic!
You know i never really liked the beat or rhythm to this song but something had me constantly listening to this song in high school. Ty for touching upon it's deeper meaning in this video because now I understand what that force was c:
I always thought the Kathy and Regis line was just Kanye being funny with his weird sense of humor, not that it was supposed to be a serious comparison.
Fun fact: the song was already being worked on back in 2001. That version was first teased on some of his mixtapes in 2002 and got leaked in its entirety much later.
A few lines that convey the hunger to know Jesus, to see him more clearly, feel completely heartfelt. Not usually a Kanye fan, but one of the best modern Christian songs to me.
This was the very first song I heard of Kanyes ever in my life. Like , it holds a special place in my heart. And seeing him now makes it hard to believe we've come here. But Jesus Walks is still an awesome song
This video came at a perfect time. Because of all of the things seen in the media about Kanye, it seemed like you and a lot of other people talk really poorly about him. Granted, it is justified because of the dumb things he said, however it seemed like he was on the receiving end of a lot of hate. I'm 16 and have friends who don't know why Kanye is so famous, simply because most of his success came while we were still young. It is cool to see you review an old song from him, and shine some light on a musical genius who catches a lot hate. Love your content man, thanks a lot.
I want you to review the Flobots cus they are CRAZY underappreciated. But I can’t afford your Patreon fees; they’re too steep. I mean I’m glad you’re making $$. But I have to just sit and cross my fingers someone else will request it.
Okay. I wrote this midway through the video, and now that I'm done, I must emphasis my above comment by sixty. I was raised Catholic, and was raised in the way that Jesus didn't really teach. (Trust me.) And while Kanye does derp a few times on this track, it's one of the handful of tracks of his I can enjoy. Thank you so much.
Wasn't expecting you to give it such a positive review. There is so much in "Jesus walk's" that explains the fabric of who what and how Kanye is Kanye and will always be the same Kanye. The KKK part I also just noticed a month ago, so many years later. Kanye is a producer turned artist, his words are a maze that patience only will unravel.
Great review (not just because I agree, but it was very well done lol), and the fro is looking mad dope my man! Out of that in between phase! (I’m sorry if you like the in between phase, but imo only Bernie Mac, and Steve Harvey have ever pulled that off lol I hate that phase hahaha)
Wait does Rap Critic not say “you don’t have to like my opinion” anymore? I mean I kno it doesn’t fit in this video since he liked it but he didn’t say it in his last review about Hopsin. I liked that line, that’s why I ask.
This was one of the first mainstream rap songs I was ever really exposed to (grew up in a hard rock only household) and it really spoke to me. I was the odd duck at my catholic school and in my conservative family, and the acknowledgment that Jesus taught respect for all people, not just the people who are easy to love, was massive for my mindset. This is definitely my "separate the art from the artist" song lately, after the last few years of hot takes from him.
Your afro is just increasing in power with every episode...lol
Add to that the purple shirt and back-lighting and i actually thought he was doing a 70s Soul Train skit.
of course it will, when the episodes only come out monthly
The hat is no longer able to contain its power.
It better if we only see it every 6 weeks
this isn't even his final form
Rap critic looking like a Black Bob Ross.
twinblade6 we're just gonna review a happy little song right here😂😂
Kanye doesnt make mistakes, just happy little accidents
BobDerGute84 😭😭😭
Best comment ever
Gonna dip this song and review the devil out of it
That Afro holds too much power. No man should ever hold such power.
I Couldn't Think Of An Original Name Sample of "21st Century Schizoid Man" plays in the background.
I Couldn't Think Of An Original Name should’ve said “no one man should have all this power”....
S Mac
Power! AYYY AYYY!!!
S Mac *that
The sample is from prog-rock KING Crimson, a monarch being a person with (without a constitution) unlimited POWER. Kayne is MANY things, but I don’t doubt he’s intelligent.
“LET’S GO TO THE STRIP CLUB! ... To spread the word of Jesus!” could make a funny shirt...
Inugami Dalton I'd by that shirt.
My dad always told my pastor he would open a "Christian strip club".
Miselo Jaime how is that possible?
Make sure the second part is on the back of the shirt.
I'm an atheist, and this song still resonates - especially the opening line about being at war "with ourselves". Shows that good writing can make any topic worthwhile.

Leena-Maaretta Dixon Agreed, also a lifelong atheist and this is the only song about Jesus on my favorites playlists lol
Leena-Maaretta Dixon I hope you can find god 💞💓💓

he didnt?

Samuel Appiah Quentin didn’t get credit for R.I.C.O., the song Drake had with Meek Mill.

Confusing the careers of Kathy Lee Gifford and Kelly Ripa will probably end up on a "Rap Critic is Wrong" episode, but otherwise, nicely done
SjTaAzRz2 Weirdly justifies the line, huh?

@@theletterm1787 by that logic literally everything is arguable his best song
gonna be that guy and say that stronger samples a song called "Harder Better Faster Stronger"...
In my humble opinion, the best Kanye song ever written.
I believe there are better songs, this would make most peoples top five easy
Gorgeous, Good Morning and Power are better. But this is top 20
My favorite Kanye song of all time
I think power and dark fantasy are better
This song really highlights the problem that I have with so many contemporary Christian artists: they are doing exactly what you’re told *not* to do, which is preach to the choir. I liked DMXs Lord gimme a sign. I felt it was a bit like him trying to talk to God asking for a sign to reach him and show him a way through.
Ty_ teynium
100%
It's also great because of how vulnerable he sounds. Most Christian music is supposed to be nothing but praise and joy, life isn't like that.
Haha "Who wants to go to the strip club....but, like, for Jesus...?" lol
Poop di sccop
Whoa! Give us a little warning before you go dropping bars like that

I fucking hate how this is posted everywhere as if Kanye isn't worthy of respect anymore...
Powerful lyrics
Whoopity poop scoop
I think that Jesus Walks is a really important song in Kanye's discography, it really impacted me aswell as a young Christian. It's been interesting to see Kanye's walk with God aswell. Very inspirational person

Kath Flynn it's scrippers
he dated one lol
What are scrippers?
Those are looked at sins, But Jesus looked at those people as mislead, he hang out with people who did stuff of that regard. So he's saying, "Jesus believed that those people could be saved, so don't twist his message and think that they are evil." That's the point.
Christians definitely think that Strippers are hurting people and are unsaveable. That’s why he says it like that.
One of your best episodes so far.
So, it's not just asking what a fictional character would think.
innewyorkimillyrock
“Face it, Jerome get more time than Brandon, and at the airport they check all through my baggage and tell me that it’s random”
innewyorkimillyrock thank you! He did the same thing somewhere else and it drove me nuts xD and as Michael Maldonado pointed out Kanye references this character in Gorgeous. Rare miss Rap Critic :P
Kathie did need Regis though, she was immediately irrelevant without him.
Foreal tho, I used to watch that shit all the time with my grandma and imediatatly stopped when they changed up the cast
Kanye shopped "Jesus Walks" to multiple A&Rs and they rejected him. Fast forward to Kanye dropping his first album under the ROC, and it was a CLASSIC.
I first heard Jesus Walks with the Jarhead trailer; it was the first ever Kanye song I heard. Always liked it.
I wonder if anyone remembers "Jarhead".
The KKK guy being burned reminds me of Sam Rockwell’s character in Three Billboards
I haven’t seen Three Billboards, but wasn’t the main criticism that the Klansman character was redeemed without actually going through an arc to confront his racism?
NotRealMusic
That's a great connection.
Kelly became the anchor and they swapped out the men.
The missing factor? Regis.
How many items, once the part of them that make them dynamic and famous fade into obscurity when the 'anchor' is gone.
Yes, he performed in front of Regis and Kelly, and he didn't change the lyric. Kelly *didn't need Regis* - she proved that. Kathy Lee did.
Now apply that dynamic to The Person of Faith / Jesus / The Removal of Values in the reality of making money.
Which then goes into the admission of "If this takes away from my spins"
If I choose to have Faith then I forgo fame/money
If I walk away from Jesus, there will still be money, and material gain, but not the impact that being next to Jesus gives me.

Now you're more 'Warm' as the 'Inner Light' of a 'Good Soul' kind of vibe

Kanye actually made 3 different videos to Jesus Walks, because "the song had multiple meanings to him."
_damn that afro is t h i c c_

I want you to review the Flobots cus they are CRAZY underappreciated. But I can’t afford your Patreon fees; they’re too steep. I mean I’m glad you’re making $$. But I have to just sit and cross my fingers someone else will request it.
Heather Calun We could go to crowdfunding.
Jeez been waiting for a new vid forever
Damn Fro! You swaggin out with that bro.
This is gold. Subscribed!
Man rap needs to be more like this song, bless you man.
Finally, a normal rap critic video.
I'm not religious but the passion in the song is pretty universal.
Beautiful review. Bravo sir.
Scippers, not strippers
Jesus Walks has to be on of my favorite songs of the mid 2000s
great video man!
I’m digging the fro RC. I’ve got mine out today too ✊🏾
Oh snap! You hit us with the 6 outta 5 now
I love this and I love your work. I wish I could afford to Patreon, but I will do my best to share your vids to make up for my poordom. :3
Thank you rap critic this was a great video
this album is so good it made me defend every stupid action Kanye did for years.
(he's worn it out now)
4:34
Fire samples they're coming to take me away, which, given the themes in the album... that's kinda perfect
Well damn dude! Where you been at?
Nice 'fro.
Man I’d love to hear you review some of Houstons rappers classic songs
Great review (not just because I agree, but it was very well done lol), and the fro is looking mad dope my man! Out of that in between phase! (I’m sorry if you like the in between phase, but imo only Bernie Mac, and Steve Harvey have ever pulled that off lol I hate that phase hahaha)
Wait does Rap Critic not say “you don’t have to like my opinion” anymore? I mean I kno it doesn’t fit in this video since he liked it but he didn’t say it in his last review about Hopsin. I liked that line, that’s why I ask.
Hey Critic, what do you think of the new XXL Freshman Cover ?
their were two videos for jesus walk when this came out
"I'm not even in high school at this point"
Wait...
Wait a minute...
Am I older than the Rap Critic!
Just rewatched this and he said Kathy Lee not Kelly Ripa. Shit, Kathy Lee STILL needs Regis.
Remember Kanye it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of needle than a rich man to pass through the gates of heaven.
Well, he *has* lost money, so he may stake in.
I was recently re-listening to this song and feel it subtly fits into my current views on Universal Salvation.
Great video
Anyone who wants to get into Kanye west music this would be a top ten track by him
This was one of the first mainstream rap songs I was ever really exposed to (grew up in a hard rock only household) and it really spoke to me. I was the odd duck at my catholic school and in my conservative family, and the acknowledgment that Jesus taught respect for all people, not just the people who are easy to love, was massive for my mindset. This is definitely my "separate the art from the artist" song lately, after the last few years of hot takes from him.
I was watching worst lyrics of 2010 and the evolution of RapCritics hair is phenomenal
You should review new music more often. Maybe review Kids See Ghosts please!!
