Criterion was competent to develop the mw12 version bcuz, it was planned to be the sequel of 2005's mw. But as always, EA scrapped it and turn the game into an identity crisis of burnout paradise.
Criterion games are one of the studios that defined 2000s gaming. Not only they produced masterpiece after masterpiece themselves they created RenderWare, the engine for even more masterpieces such as 3D GTA games
Dude! WTF, how does this have so few views, you did a great job, such an underrated channel. I grew up with B3: Takedown and after replaying it last year all the way to the end I'm so happy for how well it held up over almost two decades. I deeply miss the Burnout series. I'm currently playing through them in progression and Burnout 1, 2 and 3 are actually new to me as I started with Burnout Revenge. It's crazy how each game is slightly different from each other. Burnout 1 is a pure arcade game and is actually difficult to finish a race without crashing like a dozen times into traffic. Burnout 2 is more fun and a little easier at times, and it even introduced the Crash mode. Burnout 3 really is like cocaine or something; I loved the introduction of licensed music and the Crash mode is way more fun (even if there are too many Crash events throughout the singleplayer), but I also find it harder than the following games to take down opponents. Burnout Revenge introduces traffic checking and offers shortcuts and insane take down opportunities, and I think I prefer the soundtrack to Revenge over 3. Burnout Dominator felt like a step back and does feel like a weaker entry, but it removed traffic checking and made the game feel closer to Burnout 3 than Revenge. Finally, Burnout Parade is just whole different experience with the open-world and even implementing three different boost types, and the online was a blast, too. I've even played BLACK for the first time recently and it's an insane game. A really fun FPS game where every weapon feels powerful. I don't care much for Criterion's Need for Speed games, but I absolutely loved Criterion across the PS2 generation.

Great retrospective! This was so we'll put together. Another story about a small developer being pumped full of air as the industry forced growth in those boom years. Imagine a world where these teams kept the same scope and scale throughout the 2000s and 2010s. What would that look like now?!

what a great video. That old Sony logo was nostalgic. i hope you make more like this. edit: (shoulda waited) BLACK was my favorite game at, idk 11 or 12 i guess. hated that there was no multiplayer. So good for its time anyway. I remember rumors of the xbox 360 version but as stated, never happened. Crazy.
I keep replaying Burnout 3 Takedown and Revenge since I got them in the 2000s. They're a very unique racing experience that seems all but forgotten these days. It's a shame, really, because the Burnout series does feel like driving while on a heavy dose of energy drink. I appreciate the efforts of 3FE in recapturing that racing game essence with its vehicular combat, but the much smaller budget definitely shows, sometimes not in the best of ways, but that could just be me heavily biased by my innumerable sessions with their high budget counterpart. As much as I'd like to see Burnout resurface, the current gaming landscape doesn't make it worth the risk due to business practices.
Criterion made NFS Unbound. There have been two trailers and i can already see the most wanted 2012 references. Risk and reward trailer's docks map. The 'drift every corner' gaming, the 'wings' emote vaguely representing what we would get when taking the lead and a speedcamera popup showing up on either side. The jumps and the element of fun. Ford f-150 and Dodge cops.
I might be setting myself up for a major let down because I started getting hype AF when that trailer dropped. All those roots to what made them hands down the best racing game developers of all time, just on full display? Visual flare and spectacle ripped right out of Rocket League? And Rocky's doing the soundtrack? BRUH! This game better not suck...
I've been playing some Need for Speed games these last few months + Burnout Paradise. And I have to say, I kinda fell in love with Criterion's Need for Speed. And even if I have great respect for the classic games developed by BlackBox, I just liked Criterion's approach more. With it's "Burnout like" gameplay, and no visual customization. Yeah, I also know that a lot of people like customizing their cars but, I'm one of those few exceptions. Especially when I played OG Most Wanted and saw my rivals with awful aero kits and wings and I was like: "no! You cannot do that to a poor Golf GTI" Their games, even if they had a lot of similarities, they somehow were different at the same time. And were just fun, looked nice, sounded nice, and played really well. It's something that I miss about not only modern racing games, but modern gaming in general. Fairly polished, and fun games.
Revenge was very similar in terms of feel and visuals, except browner overall, but it really fundamentally changed the gameplay by having you check traffic. I still prefer Takedown as it's the best in the series, but Revenge has a spot in its own right as a different beast entirely. It's a game changing mod to arguably the best racing game ever.
Burnout 3 Takedown has had such a significant impact on me. It still remains the game that has given me the most Joy. It's the only game I never go bored of (and I had played it for just over 10 Years, before the Disk and my PS2 gave up on life). It had a huge impact on the the Music I would choose to grow up listening to especially as a teenager. Every cell of my body fell in love with Pop-punk. Even tho I liked Revenge too, there's just something about Takedown. Maybe it's the more detailed Car Crashes, or the superior soundtrack. I feel it's definitely the unshakable "Feel good vibe". Revenge felt a bit too gritty. Maybe unnecessarily so. I had a friend who used to play the demo version of the game on his Underground 2 disk more than he played the OG game! What was really addicting was definite the sense of speed. It was soooo fast, there's no game like it even after almost 2 decades. There's a reason why IGN still regards it the best Arcade racing game of all time! As well as the employees regularly partake in competitions within their offices every week. Gaming just isn't the same anymore. From the past 12 years, it's been all about Graphics and Immersion, but where's the fun stuff? It's crazy tho, the more gaming hardware improves, the less fun they become. People in the 70s were having an absolute blast by using a line to hit a dot across the screen. Anyway, I was wondering if you would be up for recommendations? If you are able to, then I would highly recommend you to check out these 2 games- War of The Monsters, Def Jam: Fight For NY. You may have heard of the latter. WoTM is such an underrated gem! For a game released in 2003, I think it was one of the best ones. FFNY still remains the most in depth combat in a fighting game ever. The sheer amount of moves you can utilise, it's absolute madness! I still can't comprehend how Fighting games haven't picked up on it. I'm pretty sure because they've always been made with Competitiveness as the main priority, than fun. Hopefully you'll check them out. I've subbed because your content is pretty good 🙌
I'm glad to find out that BLACK is actually a very popular fps title. I would literally ask my friends if they'd ever heard of such title, let alone play it, and nope.... no one knew about it. I was like how tf could a awesome and innovative fps title like that in the early 2000s not get the recognition it deserved! Even in the later years, I would ask if anyone had played it, and they would ask "you mean Black Ops?" But after watching this video, I'm glad it's being showed. BLACK was literally the best game for me in my childhood, I have put hundreds of hours into that game, and sure it's just the same 8 missions, with the same enemies, in the same spots, and sure it's got a very short and lackluster campaign. But it's not really about all that. It's gun pr0n at its finest. If you like going "boom boom, bang, bang brrrrrttttttt" the BLACK is the game for you. Straight shooting gallery and it does it in such a beautiful manner that no other game has ever been able to accomplish
it is actually backwards compatible on Series X and S too. The lighting is phenomenal for such an old console game. To me it has that single player fun factor of playing something like Call of Duty Black Ops single player campaigns. I miss that those don't get made anymore.
i still think Burnout 2 easily had the best overall tracks and was my favourite on original Xbox by far. Great video all the same. I really enjoyed it. I never really got into the more over the top party mode style takedowns of later games even though i finished them all. I just preferred the actual racing and tried to make it through the main game without crashing. I loved the junctions in Burnout 2 though.
Yeah i hope Three Fields ditched Unreal Engine 4 as it caused nothing but issues with slowdown and glitching in tunnels in previous title on Xbox one X. i actually wrote to the devs at the time and got a nice email back explaining the complications they had with Unreal Engine with their title and they would be releasing updates to hopefully fix it. They did manage to minimise it but it was never completely fixed. I did appreciate the explanation and time they took to respond to me though. They thanked me for taking the time to reach out too. i was impressed at their work ethics in general and that they were always trying to better themselves. Some of the team are actually original Criterion members that started the studio too.
i adore burnout paradise, its by far my favourite in the series and i have no complaints about it except from the crash and drive away cams sometimes being too long
Long time caller, first time listner here. I love Criterion, their ability to preserve old films is astounding. BIg fan. Haven't seen the video yet, but it's in the queue. Keep up the good work
For me their Burnout 3 to Paradise period was their golden era. Although NFS HP was well received and is quite fun(online at least) it didn't meet the quality standards sez by Burnout Paradise and it's predecessors for me. Also MW2012 was probably never intended to be a NFS game. I'm still convinced it's a Burnout Paradise successor in it's early development stage quickly mended together to fit into the NFS annual release schedule.
In truth, MW2012 was meant to be an NFS game from the start. Actually, it REALLY was, because it started development as need for speed most wanted 2. It was meant to have way more in common with the original most wanted: cool-downs, speed breaker, money instead of speed points, customization and an actual story. Unfortunately EA made it clear that the game had to release in 2012, and criterion didn't have the time to flash out most of their ideas in time. So... Yeah, we eventually got is barely what it was meant to be
@@playbossthebest936 To add to this, Josie Maran wasn’t available at that time which didn’t help with what they wanted to make; MW2. A lot of factors didn’t help in general with this game’s development. I recommend checking out SpeedyHeart’s videos on all the Most Wanted 2012 beta materials. Gives a lot of insight to what the game was supposed to be.
I love NFS HP 2010. Haven't played any NFS games in a while, but that was always my favorite. It took me 8 years until someone came over and played it with me and they showed you could go into free roam. Like I spent all that time just doing races?
When I received my review copy for Takedown back in the day, it came with a promo gift, boxers that had a tire track printed on them and a message too, something along the lines (but not accurate) "don't shit your pants" Maybe they should've given a bag of cocaine instead.
Burnout 2 was my first ever game, and I'm absolutely biased towards it. It is the best burnout game, the best game in general, for my eyes. I've not played every burnout, only the most popular ones. Takedown was okay for me, I wasn't a huge fan on the licensed music, mostly from me being so used to the extremely fun original music of burnout 2, then paradise was certainly fun, but progression was sorta a mixed bag for me, even now I can't tell if I enjoyed or didn't like the game. Being able to toggle which songs play where was great though, soundtrack is always big for games like that. Burnout 2 will, however, always keep a high rank in my favorite games, the tracks were great to race on, the music never gets old, the pursuit levels were amazing fun, the progression worked well, and even with how much I've played, and how much I've gotten a gold medal on every race, and even unlocked the secret drivers ed car for getting a gold in every drivers ed mission, it's still a game I haven't yet beaten.. that damn custom muscle pursuit, it's so hard I've never beaten it. Only gotten close once, with him at 1hp bar left, 20 feet before the finish. Someday, I'll 100% that game, but I don't know when, especially with my PS2 not being the best quality anymore after the decades of use.
From what we've seen in their new title NFS Unbound, it is looking like an actual video game. Still have to wait for release to see if it can compete against other titles, even after disapproval of their art style.
Yeah well, Criterion has moved on now. They're making a new NFS game called NFS Unbound, and I honestly liked the artistic style of the game. It gave NFS a new feeling. Let us hope that this game will be better.
Thank you for this. Criterion is one of my favorite game studios. I love HP 2010 and MW 2012 was such an underrated game both with criterions unique charm to them. I also need to play the Burnout series. I hope to see criterion back in action with nfs unbound
Yeah i love burnout 2 on Xbox . I have all of the burnout games but 2 is my favourite. I preferred the junctions when you had to me much smarter about it like in 2 because you didn't have all the fancy extras . You really had to watch where you placed the car at a junction to cause damage.
Burnout Paradise - I really want this game. Where do I buy a physical copy that I can own forever, with all the patches and DLC included? Oh right, I can't buy a complete copy on physical media because gaming today is completely tied to remote servers. Either you have to download the game itself and have it forever locked to the system that downloaded it, the game needs to be activated, the game needs to be online as a form of DRM, or letting the game itself go online and connect to the company's servers is the only way to get patches and DLC, none of which can be properly backed up. Gone are the days of actually owning a copy of a game. Now you just rent it on a semi-permanent basis. :(
I came here because I was watching a video from Need For Speed Most Wanted 2012 and it really feels like burnout Paradise, the last Need for speed that I played was ProStreet, I really didn't noticed that criterion games was making Need For Speed, but the thruth is that I loved Burnout Paradise, and I still play it, great game, really love your video, awesome history and so much details, keep it coming, great job. btw, does flatout belongs to Criterion too??
I strongly disagree with your takes on MW2012 and Burnouts 3/4. Both upgrade system and progression suck in MW2012 and feel as an afterthought. Even though I've had plenty of fun with this game when it released, it is significantly worse than HP2010 and original MW. Driving model with weird input lag/unresponsiveness doesn't suit city sections at all blacklist campaign bosses are there as an excuse to reuse MW name without any proper reason. It ain't bad game but it falls short in almost every way compared to original. Where HP2010 offered new take on original's idea with a lot of charm and identity, MW2012 was downgraded Burnout with beloved name slapped on top. Takedown is much better than revenge. Period. Traffic is important part of Burnout as it makes racing more exciting. "Pinballing" it out of the way can be fun, but in small doses or in "curated experiences". Revenge tries to do more than 3 but fails to provide value behind moving all "sliders" up a notch.

edit: (shoulda waited) BLACK was my favorite game at, idk 11 or 12 i guess. hated that there was no multiplayer.
Great video man! The Best racing franchise of all time
Bro out here making dope ass Documentaries with no Subs. 💀
You got one tho.
You cannot do that to a poor Golf GTI"
Their games, even if they had a lot of similarities, they somehow were different at the same time. And were just fun, looked nice, sounded nice, and played really well.
It's something that I miss about not only modern racing games, but modern gaming in general.
Fairly polished, and fun games.
im surprised that this video only got 3.5k views, least i could do is give u a sub and a like bro.
top tier content
was a big fan of burnout when i first played legends on the PSP. sad we cant have those simpler days back
"Burnout Paradise", more like "Burnout AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I'M SO TIRED"
Even in the later years, I would ask if anyone had played it, and they would ask "you mean Black Ops?"
But after watching this video, I'm glad it's being showed.
Three Fields Entertainment also making Wreckreation in 2023
With THQ Nordic, no doubt they'd make a sandbox racing game that can change the way people make sandbox racing forever
Some of the team are actually original Criterion members that started the studio too.
another channel that makes superb videos but has less then 1000 subs. really really great work.
real shame you didn't talk about burnout dominator, their one last hurrah of old good burnout before becoming NFS
A little sad that dominator is the least loved
Back in the day when EA and Criterion was two of my fav developers of games.
i adore burnout paradise, its by far my favourite in the series and i have no complaints about it except from the crash and drive away cams sometimes being too long
Long time caller, first time listner here. I love Criterion, their ability to preserve old films is astounding. BIg fan.
Haven't seen the video yet, but it's in the queue. Keep up the good work
??? Films?
Wonderful video❤️
Now they're back for need for speed!
Okay... I'm gonna ask one thng. How in the hell this channel have 400 subs with such good quality videos?
For me their Burnout 3 to Paradise period was their golden era.
Although NFS HP was well received and is quite fun(online at least) it didn't meet the quality standards sez by Burnout Paradise and it's predecessors for me.
Also MW2012 was probably never intended to be a NFS game. I'm still convinced it's a Burnout Paradise successor in it's early development stage quickly mended together to fit into the NFS annual release schedule.
I would definitely believe it. It's much more of a burnout game
@@TheeMentorDex I watched them. The history behind MW12 is just as fascinating as depressing
Still a good game tho
I love NFS HP 2010. Haven't played any NFS games in a while, but that was always my favorite. It took me 8 years until someone came over and played it with me and they showed you could go into free roam. Like I spent all that time just doing races?
Great vid!
When I received my review copy for Takedown back in the day, it came with a promo gift, boxers that had a tire track printed on them and a message too, something along the lines (but not accurate) "don't shit your pants" Maybe they should've given a bag of cocaine instead.
That's a *very good* marketing bit though. I'm very jealous
Most Wanted 2012 is my favourite racing game ever
From what we've seen in their new title NFS Unbound, it is looking like an actual video game. Still have to wait for release to see if it can compete against other titles, even after disapproval of their art style.
You can at least turn off all the fancy extra effects so they realised not everyone wanted that which is cool.
Yeah well, Criterion has moved on now. They're making a new NFS game called NFS Unbound, and I honestly liked the artistic style of the game. It gave NFS a new feeling. Let us hope that this game will be better.
Great Video!
Always loved Criterion, their games are made with passion and always a step in innovation. Hope they get Unbound right
İmpressive, very nice video. has raycevick, whitelight vibes. This goes into my favorite playlist. Cheers
Nice video !
awesome vid
burnout 3 takedown is the only car racing game i have seen non-car people to enjoy without boredom (i´m not including mario kart)
I played burnout revenge with my grandpa way back and played burnout paradise and had a lot of fun in both
Thank you for this. Criterion is one of my favorite game studios. I love HP 2010 and MW 2012 was such an underrated game both with criterions unique charm to them. I also need to play the Burnout series. I hope to see criterion back in action with nfs unbound
They should have fixed the loading bugs and added free burn challenges in most wanted 2012. That would've lengthen its online life and replayability.
Picked up Burnout 2 again the other week, STILL holds up! They really did lose something after Burnout3.
Yeah i love burnout 2 on Xbox . I have all of the burnout games but 2 is my favourite. I preferred the junctions when you had to me much smarter about it like in 2 because you didn't have all the fancy extras . You really had to watch where you placed the car at a junction to cause damage.
I think it got worse after burnout revenge
*Criterion with that dog logo man, good times in Burnout 3*
BOY DO I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU. Criterion is lead developer for the new nfs title
It shows already as it appears to bring back fun which is missing from so many games today.
Need for speed most wanted 2012 remains the best car game I’ve ever played. Prove me wrong
I played nfs since the OG UG1, and all i can say is :
Hot pursuit 2010 and most wanted 2012 is the most enjoyable nfs ever.
I love most wanted 2012 with all my heart and soul I don't care what people think.
Looks like a rise could happen again
I came here because I was watching a video from Need For Speed Most Wanted 2012 and it really feels like burnout Paradise, the last Need for speed that I played was ProStreet, I really didn't noticed that criterion games was making Need For Speed, but the thruth is that I loved Burnout Paradise, and I still play it, great game, really love your video, awesome history and so much details, keep it coming, great job. btw, does flatout belongs to Criterion too??
Let's Gooooooooooo
I've never played any of these games, but it's still pog
Sadly there is not manual transmission option in mw12
Everything EA touches, kills it.
Codemasters could be killed at this point. But they must NOT kill CM.
No? FIFA still alive
@@TheDude-xp4vb FIFA its like the beast that feeds from dead developers killed by EA.
my mom really loves playing burnout revenge and wish she can slam cars like in the game irl
Does EA know anything about Video Games or is just only one guy standing in the Dev Studios of all the sub companies and saying time is running?
