For the kids video section of youtube there should be an approval process for each video uploaded, it's as simple as that. For general youtube, who gives a shit, but for a section of youtube that functions as a zone for children, it needs higher scrutiny than an algorithm can provide. Also comments should be off by default, and a parent can turn it on if they so desire, in general i think youtube needs better parental control options.
Dreamliss Sorry, but an algorithm is really the only thing they can do. Even if they hired the entire population of the world, they wouldn't have enough employees to scrutinize over 3 years worth of video every hour (that was the number a few years ago, and likely much lower than it is now). The main problem is making the algorithm, testing it, and training the AI behind it. It takes a long time to do that, much longer than advertisers are willing to give them anyway, and so the ones that they use are very unfinished and inaccurate. The only real way to have people moderate what children see is for the parents to pay attention to what their child watches, and flag anything they deem as inappropriate. They could also add an easy, simple to use report button to the kids app to simplify that, but that's about it.

I had the same thought. My mom has Sjogren’s syndrome. I have a neurological disorder. It does not matter if we take perfect care of our bodies, and believe me we tried curing ourselves through all sorts of lifestyle changes. Eating healthy and exercising are great, don’t get me wrong; they can help treat all sorts of conditions and/or their symptoms, even if only partially, and obviously it’s important for everyone regardless of health and wellness to take care of themselves (duh.) But good nutrition and exercise can only go so far for certain conditions. I know in my case nearly any exertion on my body actually makes my condition worse, and nutrition has absolutely zero impact on treating my symptoms. Yet when someone sees how debilitating my condition is, their (unsolicited) advise always starts with, “proper diet and exercise.” Then they usually bring up some special tea or herb or some weird alternative medicine/therapy/treatment. I’ve learned that stating that “I’m working with a team of doctors and have to follow their advise/treatment plans because I can easily get worse with treatments that ‘regular”’people can do, such as exercise,” usually shuts people up. I don’t even have to explain that I’ve already tried everything they and every other well-meaning person have suggested, and that also blocks most future attempts at them telling me about some new supplement they’ve heard about that they think will cure me. Smh, sometimes people are well-intentioned but have the most ignorant views on sickness and disability, especially when they’ve never personally experienced those things.

I'm glad that YT's taking exploitation seriously now. However, I've shared it before, but I'm an child exploitation survivor (and also a gymnastics fan). The interest in gymnastics has autoplayed me to tonssss of horrid accounts that are cesspools of exploitation. I began reporting these channels, and then dug much deeper in the trafficking issue and production of child pornography -- videos which were 'okay' enough, but then had links to "the uncut version" in the description. Again, as a survivor of this stuff, I knew what to look for, know what coded language is often used and can sometimes tell what scale operation this probably is. I'd written long emails, documented sometimes 30-50 accounts at one time, explained the background and the problem in the reports and even had a few exchanges with YT about them. The bulk of all these conversations went nowhere and I sometimes even got emails back saying they didn't see anything. "Its just a video of a child standing there, turning in a circle; it doesn't break our policy" -- despite giving them all the context of what was happening there. But even for videos that were more explicit, sometimes they still left it up. A few times individual videos were deleted, but the accounts were still left up. I would've had to dedicate my entire life to link EVERY video in their archive, and linking the channel as a whole wasn't deemed damaging enough. Bottom line is that this just sounds like reactionary YT. And while 150,000 videos and such sounds like a lot, it's barely scratching the surface on this problem. Some of the channels I came across had over a thousand videos in just one channel. I'm glad they're taking it more seriously, but they don't seem interested in learning, protecting, or really doing their due diligence when it comes to things like child abuse, exploitation, pornography or human trafficking. IG and FB are just as bad, but YT seems even less regulated about this. It's been a bigger issue on YT than the other two for awhile. Video is a preferred format for a lot of this. But they didn't seem to care until now and I can't tell if they ACTUALLY do, or are just putting out impressive numbers to get people to THINK they're doing good, and hoping everyone will forget about it soon after the temporary comfort of impressive figures. Ugh. It all just makes me so so so upset.
I think the FBI might have more success in persuading YT. I don't really know where to begin if you wanted to communicate with them, maybe a gov website, or your local PD can advise you on reporting to the FBI.

Thank you all for your feedback! Just wanted to give a little more info. I have been in contact with FBI a few times in my life about these cases and have since directed others in my life/whom I trust to take care of what I find on YT bc the FBI has shown me time and again they aren't on my side. So I try to outsource to others who are just as passionate about this as me and see if they have better luck with them. The FBI/agencies/governments are tricky. They care about some cases, blatantly enable others. And the bigger issue when it comes to YT is how many of them are overseas or it's hard to tell. And, the moment law enforcement has an out to say "not my job" or "out of my range", they drop it. But, worry not, this is something I'll never let go and will always be advocating against, educating others about, and doing my part to make a small dent in stopping it. For now though, I focus more from a charity position of helping the survivors of these crimes get the compassion, therapy and resources they deserve, and put other people on the active cases. Even if the entire thing will NEVER be brought down, or even sorta paused for a bit, even if a few kid get home safely or no longer being exploited is a win in my book. So, I'll always be doing what I can! Thanks for you supportive and understanding feedback!

I guess the reason Bergman has taught anatomy in medical school for years is that he is so ignorant about it. That makes sense, right? Anyway... talk about a straw man; They learn more about _human anatomy and physiology_ - and particularly the synergistic interplay between the various bodily systems, like the immune system, nervous system and gut microbiome, where medical doctors are all taught that the systems they specialize in are self-contained and their function and maintenance is mostly independent from all the other systems - except of course when their drug treatments are affecting the rest of the body. I'm sure your medical doctor knows more about pharmacology, though. Luckily, she didn't go down the rabbit hole and sticks to the same general videos. But this has me keeping a better eye on the content she does watch. Thanks for informing us!

As much as I try and be in the room with her when she's on her tablet (and mostly she just watches nursery rhymes, playdough videos, or toy opening videos), I will admit to using it to distract her when I've needed a shower or to cook a meal, and it made me nervous that maybe she had seen something when I'd been out of the room. I've stopped it now until RUclips clears it all up.
Small RUclipsrs were screaming about it for some time, but they were silenced by calling 'conspiracy theorist'. Gradually it is catching up with bigger platforms. H3H3, Tim Pool etc did sometime ago.
A comment not about a news story, but about PDS in general. I suffer from Major Depressive Disorder and it has reared it's ugly head and I'm doing my little battle with it. During this time I look forward to PDS and the vlogs because they make me feel normal (I know that sounds bad lol). My only guess is that it is the only thing that I still like to do or watch when I'm depressed that I do or watch when I'm not. Feeling normal or "ok" even for a few minutes while you spend the rest of your day and night being beyond miserable and not living, but just existing, is something that I am beyond thankful for. Plus, even when I don't care about almost anything, the vlogs are still funny and entertaining.

I kind of love/hate the Internet. I'm currently homeless and employed. I love the Internet because I can make videos about my situation and start a gofundme to try and get out of my situation. I hate the Internet because people see that I'm online with my phone and assume I'm lying. I bought my phone over a year ago. And as I said, I'm employed. My phone bill is $35 a month flat. It's very much a love hate relationship.
Pertaining to the whole "If you give your kids a phone or tablet..." I just have to say this: technology shouldn't be considered a parental unit. You can use technology to help you care for your child (something to entertain them, or to educate them in certain fields the schools fall short on), but it shouldn't be THE way you raise your children. You should always be checking in on what they're doing no matter what.
iggyking6 Of cause a tablet is no replacement for a parent. But it can be a good toy if configured to only run child safe apps. The recent outrage was that the special "RUclips Kids" app was so badly done it would automatically switch from playing innocent Disney-like content to adult shitty videos that should have been blocked even if the child deliberately sought it out. In their usual incompetence RUclips banned a huge number of vaguely similar videos from being viewed even by adults, with no individual consideration or appeals process, when they should just have excluded them from the Kids section pending review.
Yeah, I know all that. I'm just saying that for the "dismissive"(so to speak) parents, who think technology can safely replace them temporarily (parents who sit their kid in front of the tv and use it as their babysitter, etc.) should probably reconsider their perception pertaining to the usage of technology. It doesn't just pertain to tablets, some parents do the same thing with video games, television, movies, etc.

I watch maybe 2-3 videos a day and have seen these videos pop up all the time. This was just them trying to make as much money as possible, and now them trying to save as much money as possible. Benjamin E. I personally reported many channels for child exploits and even talked to a rep that pretty much told me "It's a known issue and we are looking into it" that was over a year ago and none of the channel got removed until recently after they started to take hits from big companies.

On the RUclips kids thing, maybe I'm crazy but...why doesnt RUclips screen that content before allowing it on there? I mean think of it like a TV channel like PBS kids or what have you. Anything directed towards children and only children should be approvedd first right? Of course the parents still should monitor what their kids watch but if youre going to have an app tailored to children then the content should be screened before being allowing on said app

Kairex the thing is, though, there’s thousands of videos on RUclips Kids. Phil brought up in a previous video that some of them look fine at the start, but have disturbing things partway through (like that kids video with the bears in the plane crash). RUclips would have to have a huge team of people to watch every video. But I 100% agree that they need to do a better job at monitoring. For the kids video section of youtube there should be an approval process for each video uploaded, it's as simple as that. For general youtube, who gives a shit, but for a section of youtube that functions as a zone for children, it needs higher scrutiny than an algorithm can provide. Also comments should be off by default, and a parent can turn it on if they so desire, in general i think youtube needs better parental control options.
We don't need algorithms, we need jobs. Good people with psych evals to flag this stuff.
Dreamliss Sorry, but an algorithm is really the only thing they can do. Even if they hired the entire population of the world, they wouldn't have enough employees to scrutinize over 3 years worth of video every hour (that was the number a few years ago, and likely much lower than it is now).
The main problem is making the algorithm, testing it, and training the AI behind it. It takes a long time to do that, much longer than advertisers are willing to give them anyway, and so the ones that they use are very unfinished and inaccurate.
The only real way to have people moderate what children see is for the parents to pay attention to what their child watches, and flag anything they deem as inappropriate. They could also add an easy, simple to use report button to the kids app to simplify that, but that's about it.

I had the same thought. My mom has Sjogren’s syndrome. I have a neurological disorder. It does not matter if we take perfect care of our bodies, and believe me we tried curing ourselves through all sorts of lifestyle changes. Eating healthy and exercising are great, don’t get me wrong; they can help treat all sorts of conditions and/or their symptoms, even if only partially, and obviously it’s important for everyone regardless of health and wellness to take care of themselves (duh.) But good nutrition and exercise can only go so far for certain conditions. I know in my case nearly any exertion on my body actually makes my condition worse, and nutrition has absolutely zero impact on treating my symptoms. Yet when someone sees how debilitating my condition is, their (unsolicited) advise always starts with, “proper diet and exercise.” Then they usually bring up some special tea or herb or some weird alternative medicine/therapy/treatment. I’ve learned that stating that “I’m working with a team of doctors and have to follow their advise/treatment plans because I can easily get worse with treatments that ‘regular”’people can do, such as exercise,” usually shuts people up. I don’t even have to explain that I’ve already tried everything they and every other well-meaning person have suggested, and that also blocks most future attempts at them telling me about some new supplement they’ve heard about that they think will cure me. Smh, sometimes people are well-intentioned but have the most ignorant views on sickness and disability, especially when they’ve never personally experienced those things.

I'm glad that YT's taking exploitation seriously now. However, I've shared it before, but I'm an child exploitation survivor (and also a gymnastics fan). The interest in gymnastics has autoplayed me to tonssss of horrid accounts that are cesspools of exploitation. I began reporting these channels, and then dug much deeper in the trafficking issue and production of child pornography -- videos which were 'okay' enough, but then had links to "the uncut version" in the description. Again, as a survivor of this stuff, I knew what to look for, know what coded language is often used and can sometimes tell what scale operation this probably is. I'd written long emails, documented sometimes 30-50 accounts at one time, explained the background and the problem in the reports and even had a few exchanges with YT about them. The bulk of all these conversations went nowhere and I sometimes even got emails back saying they didn't see anything. "Its just a video of a child standing there, turning in a circle; it doesn't break our policy" -- despite giving them all the context of what was happening there. But even for videos that were more explicit, sometimes they still left it up. A few times individual videos were deleted, but the accounts were still left up. I would've had to dedicate my entire life to link EVERY video in their archive, and linking the channel as a whole wasn't deemed damaging enough.
Bottom line is that this just sounds like reactionary YT. And while 150,000 videos and such sounds like a lot, it's barely scratching the surface on this problem. Some of the channels I came across had over a thousand videos in just one channel. I'm glad they're taking it more seriously, but they don't seem interested in learning, protecting, or really doing their due diligence when it comes to things like child abuse, exploitation, pornography or human trafficking. IG and FB are just as bad, but YT seems even less regulated about this. It's been a bigger issue on YT than the other two for awhile. Video is a preferred format for a lot of this. But they didn't seem to care until now and I can't tell if they ACTUALLY do, or are just putting out impressive numbers to get people to THINK they're doing good, and hoping everyone will forget about it soon after the temporary comfort of impressive figures. Ugh. It all just makes me so so so upset.

Thank you all for your feedback! Just wanted to give a little more info. I have been in contact with FBI a few times in my life about these cases and have since directed others in my life/whom I trust to take care of what I find on YT bc the FBI has shown me time and again they aren't on my side. So I try to outsource to others who are just as passionate about this as me and see if they have better luck with them. The FBI/agencies/governments are tricky. They care about some cases, blatantly enable others. And the bigger issue when it comes to YT is how many of them are overseas or it's hard to tell. And, the moment law enforcement has an out to say "not my job" or "out of my range", they drop it.
But, worry not, this is something I'll never let go and will always be advocating against, educating others about, and doing my part to make a small dent in stopping it. For now though, I focus more from a charity position of helping the survivors of these crimes get the compassion, therapy and resources they deserve, and put other people on the active cases. Even if the entire thing will NEVER be brought down, or even sorta paused for a bit, even if a few kid get home safely or no longer being exploited is a win in my book. So, I'll always be doing what I can! Thanks for you supportive and understanding feedback!

I guess the reason Bergman has taught anatomy in medical school for years is that he is so ignorant about it. That makes sense, right? Anyway... talk about a straw man; They learn more about _human anatomy and physiology_ - and particularly the synergistic interplay between the various bodily systems, like the immune system, nervous system and gut microbiome, where medical doctors are all taught that the systems they specialize in are self-contained and their function and maintenance is mostly independent from all the other systems - except of course when their drug treatments are affecting the rest of the body. I'm sure your medical doctor knows more about pharmacology, though.
But yeah, all the "good" chiropractors who qualify for insurance plans and get referrals from MDs ignore all of that and pretend their only function is cracking joints at the site of pain, and anyone who doesn't use drugs to heal people is definitely a quack, regardless of their decades of clinical results - even though you begrudgingly admit they are correct in challenging the orthodox medical dogma. Given that you apparently agree with Bergman concerning arthritis, could you describe how you reconcile these facts with the idea that joints are just naturally "degenerative" and not dynamically changing in response to their environment like all other living things? This is the first place I heard about the inappropriate content on RUclips kids. Thank goodness because my daughter loves watching it. Luckily, she didn't go down the rabbit hole and sticks to the same general videos. But this has me keeping a better eye on the content she does watch. Thanks for informing us!

As much as I try and be in the room with her when she's on her tablet (and mostly she just watches nursery rhymes, playdough videos, or toy opening videos), I will admit to using it to distract her when I've needed a shower or to cook a meal, and it made me nervous that maybe she had seen something when I'd been out of the room. I've stopped it now until RUclips clears it all up.

During this time I look forward to PDS and the vlogs because they make me feel normal (I know that sounds bad lol). Feeling normal or "ok" even for a few minutes while you spend the rest of your day and night being beyond miserable and not living, but just existing, is something that I am beyond thankful for. Pertaining to the whole "If you give your kids a phone or tablet..." I just have to say this: technology shouldn't be considered a parental unit. You can use technology to help you care for your child (something to entertain them, or to educate them in certain fields the schools fall short on), but it shouldn't be THE way you raise your children. You should always be checking in on what they're doing no matter what.
iggyking6 Of cause a tablet is no replacement for a parent. But it can be a good toy if configured to only run child safe apps. The recent outrage was that the special "RUclips Kids" app was so badly done it would automatically switch from playing innocent Disney-like content to adult shitty videos that should have been blocked even if the child deliberately sought it out. In their usual incompetence RUclips banned a huge number of vaguely similar videos from being viewed even by adults, with no individual consideration or appeals process, when they should just have excluded them from the Kids section pending review.
Yeah, I know all that. I'm just saying that for the "dismissive"(so to speak) parents, who think technology can safely replace them temporarily (parents who sit their kid in front of the tv and use it as their babysitter, etc.) should probably reconsider their perception pertaining to the usage of technology. It doesn't just pertain to tablets, some parents do the same thing with video games, television, movies, etc.

On the RUclips kids thing, maybe I'm crazy but...why doesnt RUclips screen that content before allowing it on there? I mean think of it like a TV channel like PBS kids or what have you. Anything directed towards children and only children should be approvedd first right? Of course the parents still should monitor what their kids watch but if youre going to have an app tailored to children then the content should be screened before being allowing on said app
Because PBS has to follow FCC regulations. The internet falls outside of those regulations, mostly. Basically, RUclips doesn't do this because they don't have to.

Kairex the thing is, though, there’s thousands of videos on RUclips Kids. Phil brought up in a previous video that some of them look fine at the start, but have disturbing things partway through (like that kids video with the bears in the plane crash). RUclips would have to have a huge team of people to watch every video.
But I 100% agree that they need to do a better job at monitoring. It would be worth their time to sit through 50 ‘safe’ videos if they find another 50 videos that could be traumatizing to children. (Idk about you, but if I was a little kid and saw my favourite cartoon character dying in a car crash I would be pretty upset.)
