These hyenas are huge, some of them are just too big for the average hyena, they're healthy, this many hyenas would easily jump & kill 3 lionesses, but a male not a full adult yet keeps them at guard, it's just amazing how much power a male lion has.
Well, it's also the other two Lions in the shade. If he was alone, they would have rushed him. Ratio max is usually 1 male Lion to 20 Hyenas. They got 30 here but 2 other male Lions in reserve. They know if shit goes down those two Lions will get activated faster than they can deal with the vanguard.
Males kill a lot, and I mean a lot of hyenas. Most of these probably have memory scars which hinders their confidence. In an actual fight the lion would have to back off even with the backup. Lionesses simply lack that psychological edge, cos they're less likely to violently kill hyenas
