    Eric, you did an absolutely incredible job with this video. Having gotten into the scene around the time rolling was invented, I remember the absolute rollercoaster that was 2021-2022, where every single game played by you and other top players felt like it had the potential to suddenly shoot off into being WR. Thanks for allowing me to relive that, as well as documenting the early score WR history so well.

    Its kind of amazing how Tetris high scores completely changed from a game of pure efficiency (the need to maximize points before the Level 29 kill screen) to one of primarily endurance (with the ability to suatain play at max speed, the only limit is how long can a person be near perfect for)

    • @liolio1230
      @liolio1230 9 месяцев назад

      In my opinion players are currently working on optimizing their level 29 speed scoring efficiency, rather than going for increasingly higher scores. At the moment scoring efficiency is more highly regarded, as the competitive scene has introduced a line cap which limits how long players can play - ending every game no sooner than level 40 (level 39 is now the double killscreen).
      This line cap forms a firm boundary for how long players can score. That in turn increases the value of a rollover for example (1.6 million), as confining your runway for achieving that score to only level 39 means that your efficiency must not devolve into singling and doubling (lining out). As a result players begin to score for tetrises on level 29 speed, which is incredibly difficult, highly rewarded and shows much greater skill, speed, awareness and resilience than playing for singles and doubles would.
      In conclusion, going for scores above the current WR solely depends on long games, since you can't possibly score that by level 39. Going for such a score wouldn't help players increase their skill in the current state of the competitive game, therefore it doesn't make sense for them to grind for that, as it would serve no purpose past holding the score WR.

    • @aGameScout
      @aGameScout 9 месяцев назад +3

      Yeah, the line cap being added to most major events discouraged top rollers from practicing lineout strats. Even if that hadn’t happened though, Eric’s game kinda killed the category. Once the world record became more of an endurance test that a pure skill one, people lost interest in trying to break it. The fun of going for score WRs back in the day was trying to achieve that magical run with perfect efficiency, and it just isn’t the same as lining out for 1500+ lines.

    • @EricICX
      @EricICX  9 месяцев назад +2

      for me, it's just that there is seemingly no reason to grind lineout when everyone else is practicing efficiency, just like gamescout said

    Absolutely amazing video, great job! One aspect I missed and expected at the end though is the double kill screen, which some tournament now use to make sure games don’t go on forever. Seeing how multiple record were set during competitions, this new rule makes it so a lot of promising games will never be able to get close to the world record through no fault of the player.
    All in all I’m a proponent of the double kill screen, but for the world record progression it sucks.

    It’s truly amazing how the scores evolved in such a short time! When will we ever reach the zenith?
    There’s actually one more big endurance milestone in between that we’re forgetting to talk about. And it’s beating level 219 hiding in the glitched colors that requires 810 total lines to be cleared before the next one after! It’s a gap from L90 lines to U00 lines just from level 219 to 220 alone.
    We apparently all need some practice to adapt on working with seemingly invisible colors! There’s probably a ROM hack somewhere and I do know of a very challenging boss fight in the game Tetris Effect: Connected somewhere that REALLY tests your adaptability in situations thrown against your will!
    If you don’t know who I am, I’m a scientist of searching for the hardest gaming accomplishments out there like the glitched colors! That’s why I’m spilling out all this valuable uncharted territory information to you all!
    Also at 1:06:33, what are the odds of seeing a score that’s EXACTLY 777,777 points!?

      from having watched that game (live I think? I don't totally remember if I saw it live or not), cheez literally noticed that he was going to get a score very close to 777777 and pushed down to make it exact lollll

      level 219 is wild, a level that's so broken and hidden so far into the game past a point it was supposed to be impossible. It's an interesting level but an annoyance to TAS because it just goes on and on and all you see is the same grey and green palette for 810 lines.
      I hope one day, someone does reach it, and one day, someone beats it.

      well when it comes to the 800-line level, once we've passed that point we're super close to getting level 255 anyway. Makes sense to group them both into one, especially since it's "only" another 400-ish lines

    Hey Eric, no idea if you’ll see this, but just wanted to say you did an absolutely amazing job on this video. I’ve been following (and a fan of) classic tetris for quite a few years and thought it would be really sick to see a comprehensive Summoning Salt-style world record progression on the game after I saw your 6.4 when it happened. After my community and I got our summoning salt video last december, I actually asked if he would ever consider making a classic tetris WR progression as one of his next videos. I’m glad you got to do that concept justice and I can tell how much work went into this. Good job man :]

    I love how these videos of World Record Progression keep popping up. Keep them coming! And I especially enjoy how they practically all use ma favorite music genre ChillSynth as default. Of course it is thanks to Summoning Salt. Nice job, good luck with another piece. By the way, I was part of the Tetris Friends community and managed to get to Platinum league, rank 16 to be exact. But I eventually fall back to gold league, I wasn't able to learn to do T-Spins double on demand. Maybe you should do review of Grand Finals of Tetris friends. It is just a suggestion...

    1:04:45 Love your video thank you! I do have a small suggestion to make it even more enjoyable. When you tell us what is happening, do this a few seconds before it happens instead of exactly when it happens. See the tetris @ level 56 at the timestamp. Then we already know what to look for. This is especially useful when someone is listening while doing something else. We then know we have to look at the screen😊😘
