      Lex,
That's an extraordinary tribute to a woman who had a monumental impact on the world. The character you display and your eloquent speech and manners are a testament to the greatness she instilled in you.
You needn't worry if you've achieved success...your strength, wisdom and love of life are very evident.
She is proud of you, I am proud of you. You deserve to be proud of yourself....therefore, never speak down of your past, present or future.
May she rest in peace and may you find solace in her passing in that she resides in you.
      Godspeed

I have always loved how much you focus on words in your podcasts. You seem to understand, on a deep level, how much words really matter. From one "words person" to another, I really wish words could actually be more comfort... even if from a stranger on the internet. At any rate, your grandmother obviously means a great deal to you. Now, you've just brought that woman's life to the consciousness of over half a million people across the world. You are a good man Lex... and an incredible grandson. I am sorry for your loss.

Your grandmother was a fighter. She survived during the most difficult times in recent history a human could face yet she did not see herself as a victim. Like many from that part of the world and going through that time, you had to fight to survive or you just died. Americans definitely need to hear this story, Lex. Today in America, our culture has been turned upside down by groups competing against each other trying to establish who is the biggest victim.

Sometimes, when I watch your videos, I imagine you are the smart, trustful and cheerful friend I never had. I'm happy you are so young, you have so much energy, plans, method, knowledge... you'll get very far, I know. You must know for sure that you honor your grandmother's memory by being the way you are, and by helping and inspiring others (like me) to get over their mind limitations every day. Thank you. I love that you pubically honored your grandmother. Grandmothers don't often have much power in the wider world but wield tremendous power in the minds and imaginations of their grandchildren throughout their lives. The depth of your loss shows in this video, but so too does the enormity of strength and wisdom you have been gifted.
Here is a poem I wrote after my grandma died. It always comforts me and makes me cry. I am the mother of 4 grown children and hope to be a grandmother soon. I am certain not a single accomplishment you accrue going forward will come as close to making your grandmother as proud of you as the kind of person you already are. Your integrity, kindness, and work ethic are a beautiful testament to the kind of woman your grandmother was.
    Grandma Vonnie...
    I stop
    Picture her at day’s end
    With her tea.
I wanted to be just like her.
    But she would never
    Stop
    To dawdle,
    To write,
    To daydream
    The way I do.
    I write poetry.
    She was a poem.
    She never
    Stopped
Til we were all thoroughly fed,
    Babies happy,
    House clean,
    Laundry done.
Her poetry was the grace of her movements
As she worked from morn til night.
    Her poetry was
How loved she made us feel.
    Her poetry was her kitchen
    Where anybody could
    Stop
    Anytime
And be fed the dishes she woke well before sunrise to prepare.
Her home was a sacred place to us,
    Her enormous kitchen a sanctuary.
    After she died
I was stunned to realize how
    Tiny her kitchen really was,
And that it could exist at all
    Without her in it.
I will always strive to be like her.
And will make the dinner soon, but for now
    I
    Stop
    And watch
    As the tears
    Fall
    On my poem
    For her.

Lex, this really hit home for me personally. A few weeks ago, my grandmother (Ruzica) passed away. Like Ann, she grew up and lived through WWII. She was of Serbian descent, and grew up in Austria/Germany through the 30’s and 40’s, eventually fleeing to the United States with her husband to pursue a better life for her future generations. Lex called Ann Baban, I would call Ruzica Baba. Baba was tough. But not like the kind of tough I’m used to growing up in California… She was the kind of tough where if she had a tree fall on her and break her arm, she’d be up the next day trying to walk because “my arm is the thing that’s broken, not my legs”.
The first day she came to America (in Chicago, bc ofc that’s were all the Serbs went back in the day), she got a bucket and some sponges and walked door to door asking each neighbor if there was anything they needed cleaned, or if there was any kind of work she could help them with.
She inevitably got a job at a manufacturing plant in Chicago, working long 12-hour shifts, every weekday for 3 decades…famously never being late a single day. Although her husband was a doctor by training, he was too ill to find work, so she rose to the occasion and became the bread-winner of the household, as well as the mother that her children needed. She was the closest thing I could ever compare to a superhero. She’d commonly joke “Well, I always wanted to marry a pilot, but I had to settle for a doctor”… Like Ann, she never complained about the work she needed to do - she was just did it out of the love for her family.
Her husband passed away in his 50’s or 60’s, and she never remarried. She outlived every one of her friends, and her generational family. She lived out the last 7 or so years with my mom and I, when she moved with us she was like, 84 or 85. And man when she moved in with us, this lady was SHARP - at all her checkups, doctors talked about how strong and sharp she was for her age and how she’ll make it to 150 years old - she was extraordinary. Around the last year two years of her life her mental decline happened pretty fast. She was never aggressive or anything, but she kinda got on my nerves. She would repeat the same questions, day in, day out - she had like 5 stories she would cycle between. She would switch between English and Serbski when she talked (and unfortunately for me, I only speak English), so I couldn’t really understand or communicate with her very well anymore….
And this kinda frustrated me. Like it kinda got on my nerves, my patience grew thinner than it every should have. At first I’d be entertaining the conversations and I thought the redundancy was kinda endearing… but after about 6 months of this I started not really giving her my full attention each time I spoke with her. Sometimes I would just feel like I needed to get through the conversation and that was the goal - not to engage a conversation, but rather, to ‘survive’ it without losing my patience. Sometimes I would finish her sentences for her (because I knew every word to the stories she told at this point), and when I would try to talk to her, I would usually try to make the conversation as brief as possible. It would just be to ask her if she needed anything (like food or water or to change her position in her bed, etc.), and try to keep it as simple as possible.
Like I always told her I loved her, and I’d always do something for her if she needed me to, but there was this feeling of kinda dreading the moments I have to talk with her for extended times. I think part of this came from thinking she was going to be around forever - like she was so healthy for her age at 85, I thought this situation was going to last for the next 10, 15 years.
And she died a few weeks ago, at age 91.
I feel so guilty for the impatience that I had. She was such a tough lady, who did everything for her kids, did everything she needed to do and beyond… and look at the product of that… impatience and frustration at the inevitable cognitive decline that most people will have to face in their lifetime. I wish I could take back the times I finished her sentences, and even though I think I fulfilled my duties to her in an acceptable way…she didn’t deserve acceptable. She deserved much more than that. I can at least look to my mom, who really gave Baba the full attention she deserved. Any time Baba would start a story “Did I every tell you about the time me and Sasha went to Florida….” my mom would say “ Ohhh Baba I don’t think I’ve heard that one yet”, even though she’s heard it hundreds of times at this point. I hope when my mom gets to be Baba’s age, I can give her the same patience she gave to Baba.
So I know that Lex’s story and mine have some similarities at the surface, we likely had very different experiences, and different lessons could be learned from them. I’d say to anyone who reads this - be patient with people - especially old people. If you are going through periods of time when you need to grind through discomfort, find a way to link it back to your life goals. Try to find a way to link any kind of grinding action to a long-term goal, and it quickly transforms it from a demoralizing task to an enjoyable one. I have a really long way to go to master that skill.
Lex, I think Baban is super proud of you, for all you’ve accomplished in your life already, and she knew you’re gonna be accomplishing much more in the future. I think you’re super strong for holding it together and not shedding a single tear during this conversation, because I know I would be if I were in your shoes. I’ll be speaking at a parastos service on behalf of Baba this weekend, and this video really showed me how a brave role model speaks on behalf of their loved ones.

Thank you for sharing your story. You was a good granddaughter! Lex said nice words about his Babanja, but words are futile. Babanja died alone in another country. Real care from Lex she hasn't got. Real deads seem not so spectacular. I wish I could live the end of my life with my family who knows and loves me. Even if they haven't angel patience all the time with me.
      Condolences!

Lex you are such a great inspiration and role model for many of us. Through your podcasts you have ignited the flame of curiosity for science and innovation which is necessary to recruit young minds that will make the difference in this world. Your lessons are watched by your Mexican student (myself) whom you have never known. It is not only the work you have done but also the positive influence it has on others. Thank you for being Lex Fridman, and continue with the Legacy

My family is from Russia (in Canada now), and my Babushka was actually originally from Kharkiv aswell, and listening to you speak of her truly brought me to tears. When you spoke about her watching over the world silently, and speaking only when she had wisdom to impart, and teaching you that the emotional ups and downs of everyday will always come, but to stay steady, if was as if you were speaking about my Grandmother. She taught me the importance of words, and how to use them, and to always be wary of the power that they hold, and to wield that power wisely. She taught me that I can do anything, and to never forget the strength that lies within me. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for sharing these beautiful memories and lessons. Любовь побеждает. Респект вам из Канады. (Forgive my Russian, I don't ever get to use it)

Lex I don't know if you will read this, but this is so beautiful and vulnerable. I don't have the words to say how I felt looking at this. I was deeply inspired, deeply saddened by your story of your lovely nan, inspired and strengthened by her through this, and ultimately, I felt deep hope. Every time I watch one of your videos I breathe a sigh of relief, you are a breath of fresh air to me. Your ethics and values that drive you, resonate with me, and back me up. I don't know anyone like you, and it brings me deep relief and hope and comfort listening to someone I can deeply relate to. Thank you for taking all the risks you do, and or being who you are. It has changed my life, in listening to you. Strengthened me, guided me, and brought me home to myself. Resonating with you, has been profound. Thanks.

Thank you for sharing with us man. She sounds like an amazing person. You have done her a great honor with this video. But you have done her an even greater honor with your spirit.
I lost my Grandpa seven years ago. I know it was exactly seven years ago, because it was right when I began dating my girlfriend at the time, who is now my wife. He never got to meet her. It has been seven years, and I don't know that I've went a single day without thinking about him, or something he has taught me. Like your Grandma; he taught me what it is to be a man, to be a good person, and to fight for what I believed in.
I know you will never forget what you learned from her. You will continue to make her proud, and you will help make the world a better place because of it. Just like she did.
    Cheers.

My Grandmother was an indentured servant from the the age of 8 to 28. To escape, she married a man who turned out to be an abusive alcoholic. From this she raised two daughters. When family and friends told her to leave him she would not. She believed life in such a house (abusive, an outdoor toilet, a wood stove, and freezing in winter) was preferable to living in a housing project. A place where corrupting influences would dominate her daughters, their virtue would be taken, and their life paths would be little different from hers. Forty-five years did she live that life. She did this so her daughters, one of which is my Mother, would have a better life.
Likewise, my Mother stayed with my Father for her children. Outgoing, educated, and most of all virtuous-I never saw my Mother drink alcohol, she did not curse, she made home cooked meals, she forced us to study, and she made a home I miss. Most of all she taught me how to treat a woman and what to look for in a woman. There is a lot of negativity she could have passed onto me from her upbringing. I saw none of it. The curses of alcoholism, abuse, and the unthinking mind died with the tormented man that was my Grandfather.
My Grandmother and my Mother are the most important people in my life. Though, half of me is of my Father, I could not have changed the path of my life from that of my ancestors without these two women. And 4th Generation Feminists say "Well behaved women don't make history". Whatever. Such women make people to continue and advance our civilization.
So, Lex, to our Mothers and our Grandmothers.
Que descansen en su merecida paz
