In 2005 in Birmingham UK I requested this song during the concert. Daryl said they couldn’t play it because there were new musicians in the band. Next day we spoke to Daryl again and he said he was sorry that they couldn’t play So close. Two days later we were at their concert in Manchester and at a certain moment Daryl said that they got a request the other day and that they had been practising. At that moment John pointed his finger at me and I asked So Close and he said Yes. They gave us a perfect performance of So close and Daryl threw me his guitar pick/plectrum. One of the best moments in my life ❤
1990 I was 26 years of age. Attending college in Aberdeen SD. Wow does this song bring back days of hot summer nights, and cruising main street. They will never make anything this good or even come close as the 70's 80's and 90's music brought us.
Always loved Daryl Hall & John Oates and grew up with their music, but I feel like as I near 50 years-old, I'm really growing into them. Their music resonates more than ever. Truly the greatest Duo in music history.
This song is so soulful and expressive! They not only sing the lyrics - they embody them. And "The dream that brings us together...is the dream that's gonna tear us apart."-Isn't that the truth between Daryl and John and their current situation...
Winter 1990-91. I am driving home from a course I am taking that is related to my new Government job. I have a girlfriend (who I don't love any more) and a 2 year old daughter (that i love with all my heart). This song comes on the radio, and I start balling my eyes out thinking of the girl that got away. Years later, hearing this song still transports me to that late winter afternoon and brings back those same emotions.
I just woke up singing this song from out of the blue. It's just as great as it ever was. So close. This song has crept into my mind on so many fitting occasions over the past 30yrs. This song is a hit on every level

Great rock and roll song from the dying days of Rock in the early 90's. Danger Danger, Heart, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, Boston, Bryan Adams...all had some very underappreciated songs during that time.
Go view the video of Jason Mzaz and Daryl Hall doing it at Daryl's House (Live From Daryl's House - So Close -). It is a freaking truly amazing rendition. They need to release it again under this rendition.
I remember when I was a teenager I went to a high school dance and danced with a boy but after I slipped out the door this song reminds me of that I love it
LYRICS They met on the dance floor in the old high school gym He fell like a rock, she kinda liked him And his heart beat like thunder as they moved cross the floor When the music was over she slipped out of his arms And out of the door, yes you did Yeah a man loves a woman but he can't understand Why she's sad when she stares at the ring on her hand Or she sits in some club where the long shadows fall Drop a coin in the jukebox not the phone on the wall So close, yet so far away So close, yet so far away We believe in tomorrow maybe more than today We're so close, so close, yet so far away Some people think if you really believe That's what you need to solve all the mysteries Yeah I know someone who just heads for the sun (She says) "I don't wanna be wise, I just wanna stay young" So close, yet so far away So close, yet so far away We believe in tomorrow, but we stuck in today Baby we're so close, so close, so far away There's a restless look in your eye tonight There's a secret hurt in my heart (So close) And the dream that pulls us together girl Is a dream that's gonna tear us, tear us apart There's a restless look in your eye tonight Are you looking for somewhere, end up here (I see you looking in my eye) We gotta fight, to keep it together girl For the dreams that keeps us So close, yet so far away So close, yet so far away The who would've thought girl that we end up this way Given so close, so close, so far away We're livin' in a dream world (So close, so far away) But we live in today, girl (So close, so far away) Just you and me baby (So close, so far away) Baby side by, side by, side by Side by, side by, side by, side (So close, so far away) (So close, so far away) So close, so far away So close ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥

What a really great version of this song!! It feels a lot like yesterday. This is the ultimate album version, as opposed to the acoustic "only" version. It's much better this way, and it's so much fun hearing this great song like this, because it really jams away with guitar, bass and drums!! The keyboard accompaniment sounds like heaven as well!! A legendary band Hall, and Oates were. Having originated in Philly, they set the example of real music: the way it's supposed to be played. Now that's what I call real music!!!!
This reminds me of my ex boyfriend. The pain it would bring me I would cry. To this day it still does. That's what love does to a person. He still has my heart 💓. He doesn't even know it. Thank you Hall and Oates. God Bless you.
Wow...I hope that this post doesn't come across as self-indulgent or boring, but this song actually happened to me once at a concert by a rising young Millennial recording artist named Diane Birch who actually was featured on Daryl Hall's own webcast "Live from Daryl's House" back in 2009. We locked eyes at the autograph signing booth at one of her concerts in Chicago back in October of 2013 and I just gushed over her and her beautiful, wonderful talent...then, unfortunately, security guards pushed me away. :( Oh, well, I am as sure that I can possibly be that our paths will cross again..."if you love something, set it free, and if it comes back to you, then it's yours"...go Daryl, John and Diane!!! DianeBirchVEVO
Such a beautiful song and Daryl & John's voices blend beautifully with this fantastic song. They are truly one rich sounding duo that have lasted 40 decades of wonderful music. Duos have come and gone, but these two will forever play a central part of one of the best in history. For me, I'm happy to have seen them in concert back in the 80s and forever a fan since then.
Have not heard this in years. Takes me back to seventh grade, fall of 1990, especially the line "just heads for the sun." It was not a good time for me, but I liked the song. It seemed we knew at the time that Hall & Oates had already run their course, and that this was a last gasp, at least on the pop charts.
Saw these guys at a free summer concert in Coney Island with my best mate a decade ago. I was so close yet so far away (in the crowd, haha). Good times. :)
Once you've heard this H & O classic...like most of their music...you're saying the lyrics as you hear the track. 'They met on the dance floor at the old high school gym...felt like a rock...she kinda liked him...and his heartbeat like thunder...etc.' The best tracks are those you sing with, identify with, and that provide an emotional attachment. Hall and Oates have that part of music down combined with superior beat. The theme keeps returning...'So Close...yet so far away!" Great stuff!
Co written by John Bonjovi. I got to hear them in concert 1978 outside a NYC club.It was like 0 outside but man they rocked! We saw them in NJ 2017 still sound great!
They are amazing live. I saw them twice. First times was at Live Aid in Philly. I also saw them in 1990 when they toured to support the So Close album.

I had a partner for many years who was and still is a die-hard fan of Hall & Oates. When I hear fantastic songs like this, I'm reminded of times ago but especially of amazing music. I've been a die hard fan too foe decades now, and I still rock out to them and always will.♥️♥️♥️👏👏👏😊
Such a great song sung with so much passion! Daryl, with your unbelievable voice you have a romantic way about you! Best duo ever, so much talent in songwriting and singing and there will never be another duo like you two! Your music makes hearts melt and bring endless smiles and joy!! 😊❤️
Probably the most underrated Hall & Oates tune.
In 2005 in Birmingham UK I requested this song during the concert. Daryl said they couldn’t play it because there were new musicians in the band. Wow
Wow!! That’s awesome!
Qué amor Daryl! ❤ La humildad de los grandes.
"I don't wanna be wise; I just want to stay young". One of the most insightful (yet never appreciated) lyrics in music history
Very true.
Middle age is gonna hit the millennials hard, just like it did the boomers👍
Yeah because when you're old you are wise. But don't you know youth is wasted on the young and wisdom is wasted on the old?
Being young or wise is still so cliche
Obviously everyone here appreciates the lyrics.

Agree but Heart is right there
Daryl Hall is perfection.
Always & Forever!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💕
Agreed. Beautiful .
One of the best Hall and Oates songs!
That Jon Bon Jovi wrote
Greatest Duo
I was in Junior High when this song came out. I would give up everything to go back in time and live in the 90's and never leave that era. Ever.
They scored top twenty hits for 15 years - almost unheard of longevity. This was their last one , peaked at #11 in 1990
Lyrics to live by...🎵❤️
I can still feel, and smell that summer when this song plays. I don't know why. That is all.
Me too.1989 and 1990 were pivotal years in my life.
I get it…
I know exactly what you mean. Junior year at college for me. Some of the best times of my life.
Hey🎉me too memories from a smell and music🎶❤❤❤❤

One of the baddest jams

It’s a shame . They made beautiful music.
I agree! I used to listen this song in early 1990!!

Ah, how good is that!
Daryl Hall is so passionate.
Wonder if he is passionate in real life.

Fantastic song. These guys are timeless.
Yep... Hall of Fame-👍🏻😁👍🏻
I miss good songs with nice, understandable lyrics. I can listen to the sweet sounds of Hall n Oates all day!
A very underrated album by Hall and Oates. Unfortunately once 1985 passed, the music industry stopped marketing them as a top act anymore. Happens to everyone except for a few music artists. This album was a byproduct of the unplugged craze going on in 1990.
Why?
They will always be #1
Don't care what anyone says ❤
Hall and Oates signed with Arista Records in 1986. This album, Change of Season, was the 2nd and final album for the act on Arista Records.
such an underrated song
mikefredrck1
Absolutely
totally agree
If I am not mistaken, Jon Bon Jovi wrote the song
Just checked.... he produced it
My favourite by them 🤘🏼
Daryl Hall and John Oates, you are unforgetable.

Search Retrowave and other types of Retro Music. Yes they do. Just not for the radio?
I had my first kiss to this song 🙈
I remember when I was a teenager I went to a high school dance and danced with a boy but after I slipped out the door this song reminds me of that I love it
It’s melodies like these that pulls you more into the aura of Hall & Oates! ✨
Pretty sure Daryl Hall is an Earth Angel 🥰
LYRICS

He fell like a rock, she kinda liked him

So close, yet so far away
We believe in tomorrow maybe more than today
We're so close, so close, yet so far away
Some people think if you really believe
That's what you need to solve all the mysteries
Yeah I know someone who just heads for the sun
(She says)
"I don't wanna be wise, I just wanna stay young"
So close, yet so far away
So close, yet so far away
We believe in tomorrow, but we stuck in today
Baby we're so close, so close, so far away
There's a restless look in your eye tonight
There's a secret hurt in my heart
(So close)
And the dream that pulls us together girl
Is a dream that's gonna tear us, tear us apart
There's a restless look in your eye tonight
Are you looking for somewhere, end up here
(I see you looking in my eye)
We gotta fight, to keep it together girl
For the dreams that keeps us
So close, yet so far away
So close, yet so far away
The who would've thought girl that we end up this way
Given so close, so close, so far away
We're livin' in a dream world
(So close, so far away)
But we live in today, girl
(So close, so far away)
Just you and me baby
(So close, so far away)
Baby side by, side by, side by
Side by, side by, side by, side (So close, so far away)
(So close, so far away)
So close, so far away
So close

By far their most underrated song.

Great musician, handsome, gorgeous man... just pure perfection!
