      +Magic mushroom I was thinking just that, and what versions of Windows will it run on, and how are the drivers for the device itself, and the drivers for the video card, and then disabling the internal GPU, and getting the laptops internal display to still run with the external GPU. Plus the wild mess of cables it leaves on your desk, and having to jumper a spare PSU which if you don't own one can add to the cost for a quality 450 watt 80+ Plus Bronze PSU costing an extra $40 US, or more, as I personally would not use anything less to be safe, then lets not forget having to take a laptop apart which for some models is no easy thing to do, and might need modding for that cable to have a spot to come out of which then means getting a Dremel tool, and cutting a hole for the cable to fit into.

      I never managed to set it up my self and I'm no stranger to computers,
      Had encountered many errors and it was like a maze solve one error to get the other. It all came down to windows bsod which had no fix error 0x00000001 when booting windows, hotpluging it will allow it the gpu to recognised and labeled as "working properly" and it was picked up by gpuz as a gpu in the computer however it was not being used and no valid information was shown besides the name and more generic info on the gpu. It was pretty useless as I couldn't switch to It, nvidea control panel recognised the gpu as being there but refused to open as "gpu was not being used" and I couldn't find any way to make my laptop use it so I gave up and sold it for a loss of 10$, going to buy a motherboard and gpu to complete my pc and just use that. I'm also in Canada so everything is just more expensive and it was 60$ for it :/

  • @neocaron87
    @neocaron87 7 лет назад +60

    I went all out and tested this with a 1070 gtx. On my Asus Rog G750 780m, I basically got a 4x increase in performance, but compare to a regular 1070 benchmark I'm only achieving between 70 and 80% of what is expected from this card. Still it's an amazing improvement that will let me push back my laptop upgrade of at least 2 years. This little piece of plastic is absolutely amazing for the price!

  • @JellyDrive
    @JellyDrive 7 лет назад +55

    just a reminder though, with this adapter your using only a PCIE-x1 connection, and depending on how old or new it is, it can be either 3.0 or 2.0, which means if your only getting PCIE 2.0 at x1 itll be 32 times less bandwith then a full PCIE 3.0 x16, including it might be going through the North Bridge instead of the CPU's lanes which means its slower and USB, Hard Drives, and DVD Drives can slow it down even more
    although either way, it'll be better then IGPU's

      Laptops with Intel Sandy bridge and later should be able to run at pci-e 2.0 which is the reason I wouldn't recommend older systems.
      Skylake and later are able to run at Pci-e 3.0 and these systems usually also have a M.2 port allowing Pci-express X4 eGPUs with the EXP GDC 9.0/PE4C 4.0

    I know you mentioned that older laptops have Expresscard, but this is actually a blessing for some as it is easier to insert and remove the expresscard versus taking your wifi card out. Also, you don't have to use an ATX power supply. If the card has low enough power draw you can use an external power brick with many of these.
    I plan to do this soon with my laptop. I have a Dell XPS M1330 that I've pretty much upgraded as far as possible. Upgrades I have made are a 120 GB SSD, 8 GB of RAM (those DDR2 SO-DIMMs are not cheap), Windows 10 Pro, and a Core 2 Duo T8300 (400 MHz bump from the original CPU). I would consider removing the optical drive to replace with a storage drive, but it is slot loading and I'm not sure if it is possible. I also purchased a new battery for it recently.
    My understanding is that the Expresscard slot is equivalent to PCIe 2.0 x1. Certainly won't be a gaming beast, but any improvement is welcome. I plan to buy one and pair it with a low power graphics card like a GT 710 that should provide a boost from the Geforce 8400m that shipped with it.

    *Before buying this*
    This device is extremely unstable and requires a combination of compatible hardware and luck, if you have amd cpu - u can't use It, Intel dual core cpu - performance is trash, old gpu - performance is trash, powerful gpu - performance hit and most likely won't work (gtx 980ti/titan), Amd gpu's require annoying set up and may not work, nvidea gpu's have higher chance at working, most likely you are going to run into errors when just getting It, you will need to do a dsdt overwrite if you use a 2gb+ video card, your computer may not even work with something else in the mpcie slot besides Wi-Fi card, power outage in your house will damage your computer And gpu with this working, you cannot use any new nvidea video cards 10xx or titan/Quadra based on Pascal (if you try an succed 1060 maybe the highest you use since higher will degrade performance because bandwith limitation). Understand all That? Well here are some more errors you can run into
    Windows error 0x00000001
    Blue screen of death
    Black screen of death
    Error 42
    Error 43
    Error 12
    Won't work if you have non integrated gpu in your laptop
    Gpu not detected
    Randomly stops working
    Gpu performing slow
    Not enough resources on the bus
    There are some of the problems you will expect when setting up, you will experience at least one or 2 of the above when using edpu dock and some of them can't be fixed.
    You can have a chance at fixing it with setup 1.3x but that cost extra 20$
    I have purchased this gpu and besides the 1 full month shipping fee was not able to get it working and ended up selli g it 3rd party for less than I bought it for, my view is not worth It, save up for a pc, you can buy a fx6300 and a motherboard as well as 16gb ram for it for cheap and pair it with a 1050 and that's 400$ but guaranteed to work

    nice video dude, just a recomendation, since you are talking about the external GPU, I think, that it would be nice not only talk about the frame rate improve in the games, but also about things like if the processor get bottleneck or not with this graphic card, or show how much workload the processor and the graphics card have while you are playing. I think that this could be really helpful for the people with similar laptops to have and idea about how much they can push their own pc's.

  • @kayvahn2141
    @kayvahn2141 7 лет назад +3

    You should try this on a better specced laptop just to see what would happen. There are plenty of laptops with good CPUs available (i3, i5, i7 even) but the graphics cards hold them back. Would be interesting to try it on one of those, using a better GPU as well. Would also be interesting to try this out on an older gaming laptop that's still mildly capable, but held back by the dated GPU.

    Nice videos man. Love your channel and use it often to show people they can get into PC gaming without spending loads of money. I'm planning on making a video like this myself with my Toshiba Satellite l755-s5153. It currently has a Pentium B960 in it. I'm gonna upgrade it to an i7-2670qm (can be done as I've read it on a few forums). Then pair this with a 750 Ti or a 1030 so my GPU is super bottlenecked by the CPU and more on par with each other.
    Again love your channel man, wish I had the time to do videos like these as well :)

    I have been using an external GPU dock for over an year now for my laptop (i7 3632QM) and I'm very happy with it. Initially I also bought the GDC Beast but as I found out it has issues sometimes. What I mean by issues is the cable that is not soldered to the unit and my GPU drivers would pop errors from time to time and that resulted in the game crashing. After a couple of months I bought the PE4C V3.0 and this runs with no issues since the cable is soldered to the unit. It's more expensive but it is alot cheaper than any of those 200$+ docks out there. Plus I haven't seen any of those docks with mPCIE connector that I need. Sure the connection does bottleneck my GPU (GTX 1070) but it enabled me to play all the games that I want at 60FPS (with lower details but still).
    As a reminder for anyone wanting to get one of these you should use an external monitor as well since the performance is about 20% lower when using the built in monitor (it only works with nvidia cards on internal monitors anyway if I'm not mistaken) . Adding this performance loss to the already existing loss of performance from the connection is alot. Also you don't really need a PC power supply. I bought a DELL DA-2 Series D220P-01 (216W) power supply adapter for 15-20$ that is alot smaller and less cables to worry about.
    One final thing is to stay away from GTX 1050 and GTX 1050Ti. Last time I checked those had issues since nvidia did something to their newer drivers to break eGPU docks. Any other nvidia model works nice since you can install older drivers and update to latest after that. Since the GTX 1050/1050Ti were last to come out those older drivers don't support those cards. I don't know if anyone found a solution to this I haven't been researching lately. A usefull forum for any eGPU stuff is www.techinferno.com

      Honestly it is, but I like to think of it like this - its not about the destination, its about the journey. Like it might be so much of a hassle to do this, but its worth it to learn what it takes to make this work and the fact you can modify a laptop to game.

It is the "ExpressCard" one and the whole setup works well with a "HD 5750". I will put a link here so that you can click on it and see it some time later.

    How does the laptops monitor receive all the data from gpu? Is there anything connected to the back of gpu? I dont get it. The gpu receives data from that express port on motherboard, but how the laptop gets it back? We all know that you have to connect the monitor to the gpu for it to work

      "The gpu receives data from that express port on motherboard, but how the laptop gets it back?"
      PCIe goes both ways, what's to wonder about here? It's a full-duplex connection, so signals can go in both directions at the same time. Not that I'm any kind of expert, I'm probably getting it wrong, but I don't see why the GPU wouldn't just send the result back the same way.

    Hey there I wanted to add this as cheaper and cleaner way to power the GDC EXP you can use a Dell D220P-01 N112H DA-2 Series power adapter they are around $9~$15 on ebay and all they are is a laptop like adapter that carries 12v 220w power and has a 8-Pin plug. they were made for USFF Optiplex systems back in the early to mid 2000s or you can use a 150w Gaming Laptop PS as well (as long as it's a 12v version).

    • @ninorpronin
      @ninorpronin 7 лет назад +2

      Yeah, basically just the needed power of the Graphics Card, which normally wont get directly named, just the TDP, which is, especially nowadays, pretty useless, but I would still recommend buying a PSU with about 1.5 times the TDP in watts.

    • @Magicmushroomboi
      @Magicmushroomboi 7 лет назад

      Hardream it does not matter what psu you use, any psu on the market will do the job

    • @biscuitdingus
      @biscuitdingus 7 лет назад +1

      Hardream if it has a 24 pin thats all you need, especially for a pci power only gpu. I have a very unconventional setup with one of these docks, mini pcie to mini pci with a radeon hd 3450, powered by a 100w pico power supply

    • @Magicmushroomboi
      @Magicmushroomboi 7 лет назад

      midly mad skunk you don't need the 24 pin connector for this, all you need is the 4pin *cpu* connector, the motherboard 20+4 pin connector is only for telling psu to power on (green wire on the 20pin connector Is the power on/off wire, the extra 4pin motherboard connecotr you pull away and don't use, if you even try to use it it won't fit and if u force it nothing will happen since it does not carry enough power.)

    • @filipb.8698
      @filipb.8698 7 лет назад +1

      you can use 12v dc power adapter like laptop one,no need for psu
      Power support:

      DC interface: 150W max.
      Note: the power limit without ATX cable.

    Cool idea, especially now that cd-roms are almost obsolete (or you can get a cheap external usb cd-rom).
    I have an extra ATX PS, and Desktop GPU. But not the space for this Dr. Frankenstein project.
    Cool review, next time try to show the finished project.
    Also there are various PCI-e slots which I found out when I bought a newer PCI-e SSD storage. The newer device needed more power than my pci-e supplied. But someone ws nice enough to make a 2.5" drive bay mod that worked. At the cost of having the old hard drives storage space. (Converted to a external usb back-up drive)
    Not as portable, again not a lot of desk space.
    It would be nice if manufacturers gave users more options for upgrades instead of less.
    Imagine if laptops had a special micro pci-e slot similar to a SD card slot. You could slide in an adapter like this without losing wifi or a cd-rom.
    With intel making better and better built-in GPUs on their chips, it has motivated AMD/Nvidia to make laptop GPUs more like the desktop counterparts.
    Maybe replacing a GPU in the future will be as simple as replacing your laptops wifi or RAM.

    The ExpressCard one sounds more convenient. Sad it's been done away with, but expansion on laptops isn't what it used to be. My old ThinkPad has an ExpressCard 34 port, so I may try this out sometime.

  • @lub40951
    @lub40951 7 лет назад

    I have this dock hooked up to a Lenovo T540p through Expresscard slot with a GTX 960 and it's great value for the price, you'd get around 60% of the performance of the card. You may run into a lot of issues though for example electromagnetic interference crashing GPU signal due to the cheap HDMI to Expresscard cable forcing you to switch down to gen 1 speeds for better signalling. Another issue is bios freaking out if GPU is connected and powered so the only way to hook it up is to make the laptop sleep and wake it up while GPU is connected. But first and foremost is driver issues, I had to do a DSDT override for windows to even get it working, Nvidia has even locked the new 10 series GPUs after a certain driver update so they can't be used externally. You get what you pay for basically.

    Version 8.0 of this GPU Adapter is NOT guaranteed work with GTX 1050 or 1050 Ti's. I'm hoping version 9.0 (If ever released) will fix this issue, but as of right now, GTX 10 Series of Cards are not 100% Guaranteed to work.
    Also, If you use an AMD card with this, you WILL need an External Monitor to get this to work. NVIDIA Cards are the ONLY GPUs that will work with the Laptop Display.

    i have a tip to make a budget gaming pc way more powerful than that. bindive for pc parts behind pc shops. i spent months building one and every part is bindived. the specs:
    avp wolverine case (red)
    intel core 2 duo e8400 3.00ghz oc to 3.29ghz ( with an aftermarket tower cooler the local pc shops gave me for free as mit was just sitting there for ages apparently. socket 775 for ya)
    4gb ddr2 800mhz ram
    nvidea gts 450 x2 in sli
    asus p5kpl mobo (bearing in mind i used sli hack to enable sli as the mobo is crossfire ready)
    2tb seagate hdd (very rare to find i was lucky. i found it in a cyclone primus media player. was expecting a 500gb but hey ho 2tb is better)
    160gb western digital hdd (from a pc i salvaged from the back of currys pc world)
    kolink 600w psu 80+ bronze
    also got a couple of prehpirals too. a cougar x200 keyboard was £30
    aqprox gaming mouse £15
    saitek cyborg evo (for no mans sky and elite dangerous) £15
    corsair fan blu (free from my local pc shop they had spare)
    al in all, if you look carefully and have the patience you can make a decent low end gaming rig and i know some will say *upgrade to 8gb ram* well the mobo only supports max of 4gb coz its got a intel g31 chipset. planning to actually buy a core 2 quad q6600 in the system so i can play doom and fallout 4 soon.
    if you dont count the usb prehpirals then yeah didnt spend a dime on this thing. ill plan to make a vid about it on my channe soon if ur interested (sorry of it sounds like self advertising but i didnt know how else to say it lol if you dont believe me)
