    THE REVIEW
I watch each episode with my own commentary, often pausing the scenes to get my words out without having to talk over the episode, and also to point out and analyze the show's art and animation. I have seen each episode already growing up, so these reviews are to compare and contrast the five categories listed below.
PLOT (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
The foundation of the episode. Uniqueness and overused tropes are taken into account, but it is also judged on how well it tells the story of the episode. An episode can score a 5 even with a basic/ cliche plotline as long as it has good pacing, worthy use of its tropes, and feels well-polished. An episode can lose points due to plotholes, uneven storytelling, and relying too heavily on cliches to do the work for it.
CHARACTERIZATION (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
How well the characters are written. Do they feel like themselves compared to the grand narrative of the franchise? Are the supporting or one-off characters interesting, or pure plot devices? Did the humor land? Did the actions and character motivations make sense?
VISUALS (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
Basically, everything that happens on-screen. Character Design. Animation. Backgrounds. Creative mechanics and solutions. If there is CGI or digital effects added, how well do they blend into the show, and were they used as an enhancement, or a crutch?
IMPORTANCE (Scaled from 1 to 5 Points)
This includes, but is not strictly based on, how important the episodes are to the current story arc (if there is one) or the general narrative of the Ben 10 Franchise. Points can also be awarded for how impactful the episode was, or how favored/ important it is to the general Ben 10 fanbase. I ask myself, "If I skipped this, would I be missing out on the 'Ben 10 Experience?' "
ENTERTAINMENT (Scaled from 1 to 5)
Pretty much the most important part of developing a tv show. You can be perfect in all four of the previous categories, but the episode can still be boring. On the flip side, the episode can be absolute garbage, but still an enjoyable watch. How likely would you be to put this episode on if you were in the mood to watch Ben 10?

Personally I always loved the idea that the Omnitrix was created to help everyone understand one another and be in peace. I figure Azmuth initially intended to make more of them for everyone, but then saw the weapon potential and abandoned the idea.
I agree that Tetrax Myaxx and Gluto got wasted. So many great characters. Kinda would have been nice if they at least showed Myaxx on regular basis working with Azmuth even just as cameos. Heck, I would have loved to see a dynamic between her, Azmuth and Albedo!

Lets take a moment and appreciate the relationship between Ben and Gwen. In the Classic Series they are mostly found fighting with each other , but in Secret of The Omnitrix , when Ben loses (or he thinks he did) Gwen , he is genuinely sad and can't stop blaming himself. But when he found out that she's alive , he has tears in his eyes and runs towards her and hugs her , with Gwen having a smile on her face. This shows that they really care about each other. I think both fighting throughout the Classic Series helps building this moment in Secret of the Omnitrix. They both grow and care about each other. Ben as well genuinely grows in Season 4 , like how he gave his 'earned' money to the needy in Ready to Rumble ,and actually working with his team in Ben 10 vs Negative 10. In the episode The Ultimate Sacrifice , Ben kisses Gwen before sacrificing himself , which you can't even imagine the Classic Ben doing. In Omniverse when the Alien Force Trio gets seperated , both Ben and Gwen try not to make it a big deal of it , and say goodbye to each other remembering the time of their roadtrip. This is why Ben and Gwen are one of the best 'cousin' duos of all time in cartoons.

Concerning Azmuth's explanation given here; is there any reason to assume he never intended to make more? Since I assumed he was telling the truth as a kid, my assumption was that Ben's Omnitrix was sort of a prototype that reached completion or close enough to it, and that Azmuth intended to mass produce the device once he was happy with it - but before he could word got out about the device and attracted all the wrong attention, leaving Azmuth to be disappointed in everyone seeing a weapon in his masterpiece, and so he didn't create more.

Azmuth is... probably my second-favorite character in the Ben 10 franchise. He's one of those characters that, yes, he's smarter that basically everybody, but he doesn't flaunt it. He prefers to keep to himself, and doesn't look down on people for being lesser, only really judging them when they REALLY fuck up. And when the stakes are big, he DOES help out. Sure, in this movie he does have to grow into it, but he stays that way for the rest of the continuity.

I’d like to think the Omnitrix is sentient enough to help Ben learn how to use different aliens for different scenarios. It would go a long way for Azmuth’s intellect to create an AI so advanced, it analyzes the situation as Ben is seeing it, which isn’t a common thing for unenhanced humans.

    • @HSuper_Lee
      @HSuper_Lee 3 года назад +48

Interestingly, you can make everything kind of work if Azmuth's perspective changed over time. So at first he's building the omnitrix as a Noah's Ark for DNA, thus the unitrix, which doesn't really have a proper transform function, then he realizes it's potential as a tool for diplomacy, and develops the prototype omnitrix. But then, rumors begin to spread about his invention, and people like Vilgax realize it's potential as a weapon, and in disgust he discards it and falls into nihilism, seeing himself as a failure who is incapable of making anything that isn't a weapon, and becoming the Azmuth we see in the movie.

Way Big was a tribute to Japanese tokusatsu franchise, primarily Ultraman. And ever since UAF, he’s becoming more and more similar to Ultraman esp. on the looks.

Using the omnitrix after it was hit by Animo's machine is what confirmed the self-destruct. Gwen and Max tell him to wait before he uses it, but he does so anyway. Only thing that would happen if he didn't was Animo escaping, which while bad, wouldn't be comparable to not stopping the machine. It fits his arc with Tetrax questioning if he just likes to play hero or actually does what's right for the sake of it, and continues the idea of him having to stop and think before acting. Then Gwen's death makes Ben really consider the consequences of his actions and his selfishness on a much larger scale than ever before, unlike the Kevin scene which is more specifically about not acting like a dick and considering the feelings of those around him. Then it's all tied together with Ben experiencing Asmuth's apathy and choosing to fight in his human form, just because it's the right thing to do and not because it's cool or fun; in contrast to the spaceship piloting scene earlier.
The lessons learnt in this movie builds upon the show while taking it all just that tiny step further and really maturing Ben. It's also entirely understandable how the things he learn here would eventually lead to his Ben 10K personality.
The joke lines "wouldn't you like to figure it out on your own? Like a true hero?" "Not really" could arguably also tie into how Ben is less concerned with the idea of being a hero as opposed to actually just being one at this point (contrast this attitude with how he acts with the Galactic Enforcers).
Then Asmuth laughing and saying "I like that kid" is also pretty powerful because it speaks to his acknowledgement of Ben's worthiness to wield the Omnitrix.
As we see on full display in Ben 10.000 and Ken 10, his character arc from then on becomes finding the proper balance between responsibility and fun (something the young Ben in that first story doesn't actually comprehend at all)
The later shows do an.... okay job of following up on these ideas, but they definitely recycle a lot of them while presenting them in far less subtle ways, which is probably why they don't hit as hard in hindsight when watching this movie
    Man, this film is neat.

I assumed the "I saw that the watch was acting weird at the reactor, but I used it anyway!" referred to AFTER stopping the DNA bomb, so Ben is (somewhat randomly) assuming that the DNA Bomb damaged the Omnitrix, but Ben using it again anyway (becoming Greymatter at the reactor) is what started the Self Destruct.

I think that the Omnitrix motive for it's creation, with all the functions that it has, it would never fit for peace on the original continuity. I feel bad for Way Big. He's got a cool design, simple but effective name, nice reference, great voice actor, the factor of intimidation and many more. But most of the time he's either used as a plot device, for a joke or is getting destroyed, despite being one of the most powerful aliens Ben's got.
In his first appearance, his entire purpose was to defeat Vilgax by being very big.
In Destroy All Aliens he was used to create a mirror fight.
In the end of the second season of Alien Force he was unlocked to destroy the Hyperspace Jump Gate and failed to do it.
He left the Omnitrix and didn't appear until the very end, where he immediately got sucked back in and then Ben mistransformed into Chromastone.
Ben tried to transform into him multiple times in the 3rd season but always failed.
He accidentally destroyed the statue of Zabin because ha-ha, big guy is clumsy.
On Primus (And in the reboot) he was used to defeat the giant Vilgax
In the episode with Incredibles' robot he was used to threaten Will Harangue even though he could be the one to destroy the robot. But nanomech got his time to shine, so that's okay. That little guy really got the short end of the stick.
He got temporally destroyed by Eon after failing to destroy the Hands of Armageddon.
He failed to fight the Ultimate Aliens.
His ultimate is literally him but bigger, with minor tweaks and a blue colour.
Even after going ultimate he failed to fight Dagon and got destroyed.
    His size is incredibly incosistent.
In Omniverse he failed to defeat the giant Trombipulor.
    He got absorbed by Malware.
He knocked over some sign because ha-ha, big guy is clumsy
He got his ass kicked by Way Bads.
His best feat from Omniverse is defeating the freaking regular Trombipulor in a flashback that continues for a few seconds. And he did it by STEPPING on him.
I didn't list all of Way Big's feats because most of his fights are just "Giant Alien Vs Giant monster". That's literally his entire purpose. Feels bad. I wish he would be used more in unusual ways. Like, for example, pulling up the sinking ship full of people, or using his rays to carve some beautiful sculpture out of the small mountain to win some contest or just for fun, or blowing so hard that he would become Terraspin 2.0 with the force of the wind he creates. I don't want Way Big to be remembered only as "The big guy". Also, remember that one time he ran really fast in the WATER to the point of creating an enormous cyclone to defeat a giant trash bag? That came out of nowhere and was never brought up again. He did something only XLR8 was shown to be able to do and he did it, while being in water. Derrick J. Wyatt said that the in-universe explanation for that would be ultimatrix glitches but even if that was the case, why wasn't and why wouldn't it be ever used again? It looked like the gang already knew about Way Big having enhanced speed, which means he was able to do it for some time, but there was zero foreshadowing. Imagine the final battle but instead of shooting some rays while Dagon is down, the Ultimate Way Big enters super sonic mode and tackles him like a football player and the octopus just flies away over the horizon due to the force of impact.

I agree with mostly everything you said, but in all fairness him being defeated by the Way Bads makes sense because they're enhanced mutants of his species and it's a bunch of them vs one. And his greatest feat in Omniverse is actually overpowering the Incursean Conquest Ray, which destroyed Pluto and was hinted to be able to reduce Earth to even tinier pieces, basically the same as the Death Star's beam
