Remember he was fired by BET a long time ago and I think that the Jonhnson family that owned BET saw something about his character they didnt like. Resistance to his persistent pressure and coercion led him to retaliate by giving poor job evaluations and ultimately firing one of them. But the two cases involving sexual impropriety were settled out of court and were past the statute of limitations, so should not have been relevant in this case. Testimony was only allowed in the PBS lawsuit because it happened while Tavis' company was under contract with PBS. Now I get why Bloomberg used those NDAs when settling lawsuits with disgruntled and aggrieved employees... to reduce the chance of continued attacks re-occuring in a future case. It's just a shame that mistakes that were made and paid for in the past were dredged up in this case and that such a superlative talent and intellect had to be brought down in such a publicly humiliating way, that'a all.

At my job, I encourage fellow blacks to keep their noses clean.
I tell them that since we are held to a higher standard, things that others can get away with, will get us fired.
I also kept my nose clean, so when I ended up in a difficult situation, there was nothing that my boss could find to use against me.
The good reputation that I had established over the years ended up protecting me and my job.
I believe that having high standards is a good thing, since it builds good character and can also be of benefit to us.

I don't understand how anymore can fairly assess the verdict when a jury rendered a decision after hearing all the evidence. Given all the baggage, I dont understand any lawyer filing suit and going all the way to trial. There is no doubt PBS is seeking sanctions in the amount of their attorney fees against Smiley and his attorneys for filing a frivolous lawsuit.
It's very disappointing that Tavis Smiley was arrogant and foolish enough to sleep with his subordinates who's jobs were completely under his control. I knew him quite well before he became famous. Threw parties to help launch his career back in 1990. But I think he had a streak in him that troubled me and others early on. Remember he was fired by BET a long time ago and I think that the Jonhnson family that owned BET saw something about his character they didnt like.
I cannot understand why he brought the lawsuit and made his defence that sleeping with employees is ok. To suggest that he was too busy and therefore the workplace was a great place to date was a very damaging statement.

Tavis got investigated and caught by PBS, he sued PBS when he should have just quit his relationship with PBS but he didn't because of his sheer arrogance and confidence that he's always right and now its going to cost him whatever he now has left after losing the faith, trust and, credibility and confidence of the African American community.

Roland gave Michael Jackson as an example of how that sort of accusation can follow you to your grave. Tavis would have always had to answer questions about this. He sued in an attempt to clear his name and his reputation.
Tavis has maintained all along that dating someone in the workplace isn't immoral. It's the accusations of harassment that got him but like the panel said there was no proof or evidence (emails, texts, etc) presented to validate those accusations.

If you've ever listened to Tavis speak on the issue he has made it clear that his stance is about protecting his name and his reputation because he doesn't feel like he did anything inappropriate or illegal.

Tavis paid a huge price for pride that didn't allow him to take an L for his indiscretions. On the flip side I totally get how mutual lust and being in close proximity to sexual fulfillment could entice him to ignore pesky moral codes. Especially since in the heat of the moment he never expected to be betrayed. Not only by these women but also in the court of public opinion. Lesson learned.

Resistance to his persistent pressure and coercion led him to retaliate by giving poor job evaluations and ultimately firing one of them. But the two cases involving sexual impropriety were settled out of court and were past the statute of limitations, so should not have been relevant in this case. Testimony was only allowed in the PBS lawsuit because it happened while Tavis' company was under contract with PBS. Now I get why Bloomberg used those NDAs when settling lawsuits with disgruntled and aggrieved employees... to reduce the chance of continued attacks re-occuring in a future case. It's just a shame that mistakes that were made and paid for in the past were dredged up in this case and that such a superlative talent and intellect had to be brought down in such a publicly humiliating way, that'a all.
