Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Foam Cosplay Sword!
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- Let's flash back to a build that was part of Adam's preparation for this year's Comic-Con! For his King Arthur armor cosplay, Adam needed a foam sword that would be suitable for the convention floor. He turned to the LARP community to find a prop, and today's build is making that sword look better with different techniques for metallic finishing. To the airbrush!

Gold Leaf... Use a soft brush with water! The water clings to the Gold and ta da!
who else thought Adam was going to actually going to make a foam sword?
amateur cosplayer wanted to learn to do a foam sword from scratch. planning on cosplaying grimmjow
How to make a foam sword:
Step 1: Buy a foam sword!
Me and I'm very dissapointed
@@SirAngusSteele People love making things themselves sometimes.
@@nodeloliver6201 Yeah, that's what I thought. Apparently Adam doesn't, though.
How to build a foam sword
Step 1: buy a foam sword
Me: wait, what?
That's not the title
Am I the only one who loves the shots of just Adam working without talking just hearing the foley of his tools etc
Crow ASMR
It's like proper ASMR not all that cringey shit with eating and whispering and tapping shitty false nails on weird shit. shit. erghgh
it's like the rare quiet moments in Bob Ross' show ;)
If you enjoy watching craftsman's hands working I can recommend the anvil series of C&Rsenal ruclips.net/video/NVjhlDu1t5c/видео.html
I love it to watch people with decades of experience showing to the world what only an apprentice got to see. Imagine all the information of the masters that went lost in history.
Crow I think those moments are wonderful. Witnessing a true mindful moment is satisfying.
I would absolutely watch an extended uncut video of Adam just building something without talking. And I mean full attention, not in the background. Watching him work is amazing. Although I do appreciate the explanations he gives, and how excited he gets about things.
"I guess you could hurt someone, but you would have to really work at it."
I can attest to this, having been struck with that exact make and model. Repeatedly.
I learned that typically I spend more time cleaning airbrushes than using them, haha. I appreciate the silent problem-solving moments. Great video, Adam :)
Wait, wait wait... You mean to tell me that you have every possible tool on the planet in your shop except for a pipe cleaner! lol Oh Adam.
He probably just ran out and ordered a case of them after this.
I... I never realized that pipe cleaners are literally for pushing down pipes to clean them.
Did you know there is a guy on youtube that is watching paint to dry.
LOL. Just wondering how you thought they got their name?
Watching paint dry - Sixty Symbols
ruclips.net/video/OW5wB8rJ8Zc/видео.html
Nothing boring about it dude !..
Love how he just fully drills into the work bench with no second thought to make a holder for his tool.
"Well, I guess you could hurt someone, but you'd have to really work at it."
Just picturing Adam spending half an hour following someone around, trying to kill them with a foam sword.
I could watch Adam Savage build things I desperately want with tools I don't have all day.
The gold leaf turned out great, I was sceptic when you started lol
Golf leaf seems to go from crap to magic in seconds.
It's just like that aluminum tape. I'm always really skeptical, and then it turns out awesome.
At the end of the video the closeups show the leaf peeling off though. A lot of black spots in there
Tito Oliveira did not see that 😯
It would look even better if he burnished it.
"peal it right the f up." One of the many many reasons why I love Adam Savage and tested. After Mythbusters ended (no the new series with a new cast isn't cannon in my mind) Tested brought Adam back into my life! I mean I wouldn't call it a man crush, but...
Every time I see Adam working the dryer, I imagine him being a hairdresser...
ElmerVSworld With his French accent from Mythbusters!
that chrome paint is magic
I wonder how durable it is? Rattle can chrome loses its shine kinda easily
I'm a Molotow sponsored artist and it retains it's shine really well and is durable as the company is a graffiti based art supplier which is known for their high quality, long lasting paint and inks. The only drawback to it is it has a very long drying time compared to spraycan chrome.
HarleyEos been working on a bruised titanium look, (paint testing) but I think I'll grab that if it's not too expensive 🤔
the pens are pretty cheap (under £5) and get them or the refills from a graffiti shop/supplier and not an art supplier as you'll pay an extra 50% or more for it.
Ralph Replete Great thanks 🙂
he even tapes things better then i do, i am not worthy
practice more and get better
also, quality tools often really make a huge difference! for example cheap tape doesn't stick well, rips more unevenly or needs more strength to be ripped etc.
adam is such a chill, childlike person, he cant imagine anyone being angry enough to use a soft/lightweight item to hurt someone else but as someone who has broken another persons nose with an empty 2 liter bottle, when youre angry enough, anything is possible
I love watching Adams brain think... You can see it in his eyes, just ticking like clockwork
watching Adam clean an airbrush nozzle... still a better show than Twilight!
I would love to see your techniques on making a sheath for your aluminum sword
That little "nubbin" you cut off was the end of the tang which is hammered in to keep the handle and pummel on the sword rivet-esque.
Hey, I noticed a buzz or bloop in the audio that continued to play in the background for some of your one day build videos... just wanted to point that out, anyway i love these very much and greetings to the whole team :)
I just looked at it with premier. It seems to be 361-365 Hz and is audible for most of the video.
Cédric Mines the buzz is probably his air compressor (or air conditioning unit) that can be heard when they switch to the overhead mic
i think it is the fluorescent tube
Yeah, for a while I was thinking that my tinnitus had picked up a new tone, but stopping the video stopped that sound... I too am leaning on the explanation being some kind of air moving device.
Oh, good, so it's not just me.
Also, darn, there's a hum in the video.
I love it when he goes "Ehmmmmm...." And then just starts doing something, completely forgetting to comment on it :D
Man, I would pay to attend a workshop or class where Adam just teaches how to spray stuff. Like how evenly he applies that adhesive. And spray paint. There isn't anyone better. I would love to learn that.
My dad is the airbrush master! Honestly one of the best artists I've ever seen. Sad that he has gotten so sick at only 53yo that all of his talent is just going to waste...
So Adam didn't build a foam sword, he decorated a foam sword.
mostly it was air-brush cleaning...
It was a cool video but yeah I was hoping to see some foamsmithing.
If you want foamsmithing, checkout Punished Props on Yt.
i wanted to see how he made the sword too :( we need a part 1
...He didn't. He bought the sword and made it look more Arthurian
That paint is awesome for filling in all the dings in the plastic chrome on all these new cars as well
Adams lungs are now chrome plated :D
I like listening to him talk while he works.
"Pretty fricking chromy" -Adam Savage
Doesn't anyone else think that is so satisfying watching this man make cool shit?
I love watching a milionair building crazy stuff in spare time
WJT SHANE he's a millionaire that definitely deserve his money
Actually, I doubt he's a millionaire. I think it's more like hundred-thousand-naire, if that is a word. His net worth is stated to be $8 Million though.
If his net worth is $8 million, he's a millionaire...
Net worth is not the money they have in a bank account, it's the value of the person's assets (like houses, cars, etc)
Escalator his shop is likely a large portion of that net worth as well.
WE NEED MORE ONE DAY BUILDS.... PLEEEEEASE!!!
I am a simple woman..I see Adams one day builds, I click!
FWIW, I find that an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner type thing works really well for cleaning airbrush parts. Depending on the solvent you need for the paint you've used, it might not be too kind on the O-rings, but it generally makes a really good job of cleaning the fiddly bits.
"Molotow Liquid Chrome" - Quality made in Germany :)
Sintoxic molotow and montana are the best for buffing 👌
At 10:00 I was fully expecting Adam to say "I have some here that's not perfect, but it's okay. It doesn't have to be perfect, and there are no mistakes when gold leafing, only happy little accidents. And then comes my favorite part, we beat the devil out of the brush. Just give it a good shake to get rid of all the glue..."
"This time, on Adams two day sword decoration" 😂
I could watch an actual one day build live stream of adam making anything
If it cured overnight.... why is Adam covered in gold-leaf?
AimlessMoto he didn't say he went to sleep
AimlessMoto maybe he stayed overnight working on other projects 🤷🏻♂️ wouldn't the the first time
Working clothces I pressume, he takes them off at the end of day and puts them on again the next day.
Dude gold leaf is like glitter that shit sticks
Also like someone else said it might be shop clothes. Usually you'll wear the same clothes until it's really messed up.
The Molotow gold and silver chrome rattle cans will give you the same amazing results. By far the best metallic paints ever!!!
Molotov and Montana paints are soo durable bc they were designed to last in the streets for years lol. grade A graffiti supplier
I was going to comment the exact same thing! I've been using these brands for years and I would swear by them any day. The only time I've had any sort of issue with a Montana or Molotow product was when I painted parts of the grille on my car with some cheapo plastic paint and then coated it with a Montana matte clear coat - it didn't quite hold up to the abuse on Swedish backroads. Then again that's very much not what it's made for so it doesn't really matter. Great stuff!
Didn't clean out his air brush the last time he used it... What a Savage!
For the few that read this I hope you have an amazing day
my day sucks. it's raining and no work today -_-
Try not to let the things we cannot control (like the weather) bother you, pro life tip.
Raining here, too. I like the rain. But I have a cold. :(
Just call them up whenever you have a rainy day? No I'm talking practical here.
thanks Zion.. you too
It’s all beautiful but I’m stunned at how great the pseudo wire wrap effect worked - wow. That’s going on the next kids Halloween costume I do! :)
Is Adam sad at all that he didn't get to walk with it? I know he didn't have time to go through the weapon check so he left it.
love the cleaning out the airbrush part, seriously
I just use air brushes for cakes, but I know how much the food color gets into my nose, for love of fuck weare respirator when you work with this shit.... unless you want chrome lungs
Angi Tig No mask, and doesn't clean his airbrush after each use, tsk tsk tsk
Whoa! He said gold leaf at the same time I read it on the workbench in the background!
mannnn, its 12am and i have class tomorrow
Then tested comes along and uploads a 25 min video
damn, looks like imma be tired
Literally in the exact same position right now
Music these Days feelsbad. Bahaha
Hutcho Hutcho I'm going back to school tonight 😩😩
Hutcho Hutcho especially after the worst day of my life
Well, one of them
The kind of video you like before even watching it
Immediately reminded me of the Mythbusters episode about the chinese rocket chair. I think they also used gold leaf to ornament the chair.
I want to see Adam build the upcoming LEGO UCS Millenium Falcon as he is a Star Wars fan and has build some other things.
Watch him sort 7541 pieces in diffrent cups (As he loves to see all parts all at one for easy building), a big timelapse of what would be ~20 hours of building.
Adam savage you are my hero
21:53 "Holy crapballs, that is ludicrously shiny!" - Adam Savage 2017
You can tell Qdam was really eager to use the gold leaf, would have really made sense to paint first!!
I love his "That step done now..." Searching/thinking mannerisms. It just shows the how far down the fun of his passion is in him
I always needed a double action painting air force jet models with the old school tri color vietnam paint pattern.
What, no weathering?
If you saw the movie all the anachronistic weapons and armor were super polished to a mirror finish. I think most of the goofs for this movie was how many times a crew member got caught in a reflection.
its supposed to be a splendid thing
Awesome as usual Adam! You’ve inspired me to make a wooden sword with a resin cast to bee in the helt and posted it on my RUclips channel
BUT IT'S NOT FULL TANG DAMASCUS STEEL AND BATTLE READY WAAAAAAAAAAA
I've been a professional blacksmith for 20 years and my arsehole is bleeding my intestines out of the trigger this causes on me. (I'm actually just a sad basement nerd on an internet-hate-thirst looking for attention).
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I have no stake in this discussion, I just really wanna WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Finally.. a new ODB!!!
good to hear he's protecting his parts with tape.
"It matters to me," is the ONLY thing that matters.
I'm sponsored by Molotow and the liquid chrome is amazing. One of my favourites in all their ranges, it's so reflective, like almost a mirror finish.
just how durable is it? Looks like it should be very durable from this video considering its on a foam that can flex a bit, but on the overnight cure Adam said he could still finger print it. How long is the cure time for a really durable finish? Can it be clear coated for extra durability without losing its luster like so many other metallic paints?
Thanks!
it's got some scratch resistance, and resists abrasion and good uv proof. I know it takes at least a day to full cure but I'm using it to create art with, not as a coating so that would really depend on the surface, and thickness of layers. Adam used a lot in one go, so probably best to layer it up. Also it's near mirror reflective so a finger would leave a grease mark on it. Not used a clear coat with it so that's something you'd have to test. In theory you should be able to do it but would require a bit of experimenting to find the best one that doesn't react with the paint. It's an alcohol based paint btw.
Thanks so much for the info!
Definitely looking to try this stuff out soon.
Replete Replete I wish I was sponsored by them back in my graffiti days. Always loved the brand, great quality, but, very expensive.
I like your name! It fits in to one of metallicas songs perfectly! Its called “Am I savage?” So the lyrics could also be “ADAM SAVAGE!!!! Scratching at the door...” lol :)
Why not do the silver first?
I think maybe because he have to mask it (the airbrushed blade) so not get sprayed with glue and the masking tape can ruin the silver paint, just a guess
Adam said his airbrush is a Badger. I have that same airbrush and mine is a Paasche. It's a great airbrush I use mine for painting model trains and cars mostly. I don't think i could get the hang of a dual action.
Should have masked the cross guard and the pommel and painted the blade and then applied the gold leaf last!
that is what i tought too. Its probably because its not a high quality build where it really matters. It came out fine in the end anyway. Oh maybe was to avoid the gold leaf to stick to the still sticky chrome paint while it cures.
Remember how he said "the gold leaf will stick to anything sticky" (or words to that effect..) The chrome paint can take up to 72 hours to cure and even then still has a little bit of 'tack' to it.
His sequence of operations allowed for that and the fact he was doing this, as it traditional, in the last hours before heading off to the Con.
Just thinking...unwrapping that sword after the journey might be a bit interesting. Hope he packed a touch up kit..
I was thinking, if metallic gold paper is just silver with some yellow cellophane or something similar on top, what if he painted the crossguard/pommel with that same Molotow chrome and then overlayed it with a transparent yellow paint?
Sure that would need to be tested separately first...
The needle is what makes airbrushing possible
#PUPPYMONKEYBABY
That looks like it could be a stunt prop with that chrome spray.
The stupid thing about this sword is that it's a longsword. Arthur's story is supposed to be set in the 5th or 6th century and longswords weren't a thing until the late 13th century. But that's typical of tv and movies I guess...
Great work though Adam. ;)
He also shouldn't be wearing full plate armor. Thats a major goof of the movie.
I'm not sure I'd call this particular one a longsword. It seems to be on the larger end of arming swords, but a longsword is a two-handed weapon. Fiction like Dungeons and Dragons have confused them with arming swords, if we're going to nitpick historical accuracy. Arming swords certainly did exist by the 5th or 6th century. As far as King Arthur's tale, it has rarely been depicted with period-authentic anything, no matter what time they writers decide upon. Even fiction from millenia ago struggled to place their characters in the correct gear.
Vara Diio it's a not that trivial subject. The german Wikipedia actually has two articles about longswords one called *Langes Schwert* which talks about the two handed sword from the 13th century and than there is the article *Langschwert* which describes a larger variety of types of swords which are about a meter+ long. This page also includes a aword type called *Spatha* which was used by romans from 1st b.c. -6th century and is probably the class of sword which excalibur belongs to.
Also I doubt the real sword would be as Adam says that chromey. Maybe something closer to gun metal gray. But since he cos playing a film character in a film that I recall were all the armor and swords were super chromey it works.
I think a pattern forged saxon sword with short handguard would stand out a lot more on screen compared to the swords the other actors would be using.
It's the legend of Excalibur for fuck sake, stick some dark age mysticism in there
I wonder if Jamie Hyneman ever watches Adams Savages videos on tested. Adam is working on the one-day videos I wonder if Jamie thinks of ways he could do things better. It would be a really good idea if they could do a head to have battle on one day builds. Jamie Hyneman versus Adam Savage on who can make the best one day build between both of them. It's a long shot but I think that'll make for great video content.
That audio hum is seriously distracting...
I just looked at it with premier. It seems to be 361-365 Hz and is audible for most of the video.
Volrath never even noticed it until it was mentioned in the comments...
Feel like it’s to be expected in a workshop somehow so it doesn’t bother me
While I would normally agree, it hasn't appeared in any other Tested videos, making me think it's more they recorded the video then found the audio glitch in post and decided to release the video anyway
It's not a glitch, its the ambient sounds in the shop. It's to be expected
Glad you enjoyed my home county of Cornwall
0:36 just came in his pants...
REPLY
dead
kinda surprised we're not using aluminum tape for this one ...
but, diversity of techniques is cool too. :)
You weren't lying. You really don't know how to gold leaf.
InformantNet lol
InformantNet It all worked out in the end though
Lünk I suppose. Still, paint on the pommel and cross guard would have been better. I'm guessing virtually all of the leaf rubbed off on his walk.
All that and he didn't even have the sword on him at Comic Con when he walked around as King Arthur. I'm guessing they wouldn't let him bring it with him onto the floor, even though it's just a foam sword.
You usually put a red base underneath the gold for a better colour...
nevermind, he just said that
*delete button*
Haha! Nice.
If you watch the video he mentions that at 9:10
Oh interesting, I had no idea. I hadn't gotten to the part where he mentions it yet so thank you for the information, friend.
There is a spray paint called mirror effect that seems to work very well
First like
Adam talks about chrome paint for 25 minutes: one day build edition
Man I want to try that chrome on some action figures...
I hope one day i can run into Adam at a con
this is how they did manuscript illumination with real gold and silver in the medieval times
Would love to see the wear and tear of that chrome paint after comiccon, if it wears good... then it must have been made by aliens
He never actually brought it into the show floor. The weapon check-in line was too long.
The Molotow paint has everyone excited. Even us model makers. It's always sold out.
21:46 MOTHERFKN StEinS GaTe REfference, Holy cOw, so i said we should come sooooon.............ShAmän Gril
As someone who wants to make foam weapons, I'm a little bummed he didn't actually make one. Should have been titled: "Adam mods a commercially available foam sword"...
I know this video is three years old and the likely hood of anyone seeing this message is unlikely but if you are interested in some amazing metallic paints in rattle cans your should look into Montana Cans gold edition metallic spray paint. I used the gold on an art projects and it's really amazing.
Adam could build the lock out of amazing spiderman 2
If anyone in UK use to watch Art Attack...this is the adult version
Does the Maltow finish dull if you clearcoat it?
Something else I want to try is that new powdered chrome they have for nail salons. It requires a super glossy black basecoat, and I'm not sure if you can clearcoat it either. Still, imagine dusting a silicone mold in that stuff when you're doing a resin casting! I saw someone use it in a DIY slime recipe, and the stuff looked like mercury!
While your sword finish looks great there is "rattle can" spray paint with an actual mirror finish that could then be steel wooled down to a slightly duller finish that might look more like a polished sword.
Nobody had ever put a foam sword in a road case before..😂
Model Master does a pretty good chrome too.
Maybe use some Montana Black Silver crome for the same finish but a rattlecan
Chrome you say? WITNESS ME!!
