  • 98 vs 95 vs 92 octane gasoline performance test on a stock turbo car Opel astra j 1.6 180 hp.
The test was done on the same sections of the road, same (+-2 degrees) out temperature and with the same weight (apart from a small difference due to the amount of fuel in the tank).
Recommended gasoline octane for this car is 95. Max: 98. Min: 92.
    Acceleration test results:
    0-100 km/h:
    98: 7,7 s.
    95: 7,95 s.
    92: 8,08 s.
    0-160 km/h:
    98: 19,55 s.
    95: 20,2 s.
    92: 21,95 s.
50-150 km/h 4th gear run from low RPMs:
    98: 17,45 s.
    95: 18,3 s.
    92: 19,85 s.
    Conclusion:
92 octane produces much less power over the entire engine RPM range ( especially at low).
95 octane almost as efficient as 98 at low RPMs and not as powerful at high.
    Your opinion?

How did you Retune the engine fuel and timing requirement between each fuel test and then let the car drive 50-500km to relearn the new map and adjust accordingly.
If you didnt then the test is pointless.

It's about as much as you can expect from different grades of fuel. We're not swapping engines for the bump in acceleration you're pbly imagining...

  • @MarcGismondi

Octane does not make your car faster, what the car is doing is increasing ignition timing because higher octane has a higher knock threshold. Are you gaining +10 hp? yes you are but the car will mostly take advantage of this when it is just coasing and increases timing until it pulls its own timing for fuel efficency.

    • @Ren_1106

You don't get extra HP by filling 98 Oktane. You only cleansing your engine and for better response.

the fuel is a mix of carbohydrades and acts as 95% or 98% of pure octane. However, the engine I drive is designed for 95, but still runs better on 98 why? because 95 fuel contains upto 10% bioethanol and 98 only upto 5%. This makes a difference

I own a mazda 3 2019, when i run 95 for a long period it gets sluggish and some weird knocking noises, it tells me when to put in 98 somehow, after i drove it a few km's it begins to run smoother, its ok if you fuel it up with 98 once in a while :) i wouldnt do it with each refill since the price differs with 30 cents per litre

  • @Weather_Chasers

So methodically speaking unless you completely drained the fuel system between octane fills, modern car ecu's will adjust to quite honestly whatever you throw down its throat, thus rendering optane immeasurable and false. The truth actually is that most modern cars will run perfectly well on good old 89 upto 98 ron with absolutely no noticable difference due to live adjustments made by the car's ecu. Some hight power motors will say 91-98 Ron but truth be told, because of ecu retard and advance, those motors will act exactly the same. Old iron age motors that rely on leaded fuels however, thats a different leg for a spider to climb up!

The 98 fuel doesn't get your car any extra horse power units which doesn't make engine stronger. 98 is like sugar affecting your heart, better performance by response timing.
