I know he insisted on playing scrumhalf instead of wing, I guess it was his own insecurities he had about playing wing instead of playing scrumhalf that hold him back as a player. Although several coaches said he would make it on the wing, he believed that he was a better scrumhalf, so it was his own fault that he got overlooked as a player and never reached his full potential. IMO he was a better wing than scrumhalf.

Irishbrah hougaard is a brilliant wing, but his passing and kicking game was far too poor for springbok scrumhalf. Very unreliable.
